I've only purchased mat boards here, so I've honestly never made it very far into the store, but this is my go-to place for DIY framing supplies. Pretty good prices, a decent variety of colors (not a lot of specialty colors, metallics, or textures, but plenty for basic framing jobs), and a selection of corners at a desk near the front doors so you can match up mats to your prints in clean light. Take your corner selection to the checkout desk and they'll retrieve your board for you. They also have protective plastic bags big enough to cover the sheet. They offer a teacher discount, which I always forget about, so I'm grateful that the staff asks every time! Several parking spaces in the shared lot out front and I've never found it full. This is pretty much the only art supply store left on the island and while somethings are more expensive I choose to buy when I can from here to support local businesses. I give it 3 stars because it just can't compare with the brick and mortar experience of dickblick in New York City where there is just a wide selection. This store helps teachers' supply lists so that is why certain brands are on hand and others are missing from the shelves. The staff are always friendly and helpful but it gets tiring when I want to restock on a fave medium or browse and find something new. read more

I've lived in Honolulu since 2013, and been painting since 1994. Hawaiian Graphics was the first art supply store I discovered and the best one over all the years. The staff is mostly made up of artists, and they are helpful not just in finding items. They are happy to answer art-related questions, too. In fact, I feel like I'm visiting friends each time I go there. The store is well-stocked with almost anything I need, from canvases to paint brands and brushes. They also have a "club" that offers generous discounts on everything I buy. Finally, I truly enjoy my experience there, every time I visit. I drove all the way out to town for the mini. She did an internet search for Copic markers and it lead her here. She's been watching YouTube videos, mostly anime and artists in Japan... And I guess Copic is the thing. We went to other art supply stores and they didn't have the brand. This was the first store on island that we've seen them! As soon as she turned the corner, her body floated right to the Copic wall. She was in heaven, until she saw the price... A pack of 12 markers is just about $90! Each pen was just about $7.50. I expected them to be pricey, and that's double what I thought lol. She brought her own money and was prepared to eat the cost herself. I was just a chauffeur so what could I say? After browsing the entire store thoroughly, she reluctantly handed over her dollars and coins to purchase her very first Copic marker, just as she had dreamed for so many weeks. The employees were helpful. No complaints. Asked if we had any student, teacher, or military ID to receive a discount. I didn't check how much it was though. The store layout is fine. Its not tiny and over crowded. First floor is all the art supplies like paints, markers, pens, pencils, etc.. Upstairs there were more papers and easels. Parking lot is small. I drove slow coming up to the lot and still ended up next door. I can't imagine this shot getting swamped, but in town, you never know! Awesome local art store that looks tiny on the outside but is packed to the gills with all you need art-wise. I was in dire need of some more watercolor paints and they were recommended by a local artist whom I recently met. Yes they're a bit expensive, as most art stores are, but you get what you pay for. For about $120, I walked away with 2 watercolor paper pads, 2 sketchbooks, a 40 piece watercolor set, 2 super mini easels, some new paint brushes and a couple of gel pens. Sure, I could have ordered for cheaper through amazon but then I wouldn't have supported a great local business that is chalk full of super friendly staff and I would have had to wait several days, for items I needed immediately. The other day, we wandered into Hawaiian Graphics focused on getting a couple of 3/8" slant-tip paint brushes that we plan to use to complete a home improvement project. As soon as we stepped through the door, we both had flashbacks to our University of Hawaii student days. I often accompanied my husband into this shop when he needed art supplies for constructing some of his projects. He meandered down the aisles like he was in a hardware store or reminiscing his school days while I went straight to the brushes, made the selections based upon our need and waited patiently at the cashier's counter. The cashier was very friendly and helpful as he inquired if we had any promotional discounts to redeem. He KINDLY mentioned student and Military then, senior discounts. We found that we qualified for discounts! The prices might be "steep" for students but, discounts help! Even with seemingly high prices, this store has "everything" for the amateur or professional artist. The only thing I haven't loved is that I bought a Westcott Acrylic 18" ruler here that ended up not having a straight edge and messed up my drafting. I didn't have my receipt and so they didn't even let me exchange it :( They are frequently out of stock with some things, especially during back to school season. If you're looking for some art supplies and you need them right away because you can't wait for Amazon and all of the cheap places like Fisher are out of stock as usual, this is the place you head to. The store has a wide variety of art supplies and even offers art classes. It's really quite gratifying going to an actual brick and mortar store and being able to examine and sometimes even test out the products before making purchases. As far as I know, this is the only place around where you can purchase Copic markers as well as their refill inks, so that makes it worth the trip. STUDENT DISCOUNT! Well, a 10% student discount!! Whatever helps a poor college kid out, works for me! Hawaiian Graphics is pretty much the only art supplies store aside from Ben Franklin. Even Ben Franklin can't be compared to Hawaiian Graphics because BF specializes in more crafty things while HG focuses on art supplies like pens, brushes, paints, inks, etc. Art supplies are pretty expensive regardless of where you buy them, but I think HG tries to keep things priced reasonably, and they have sales every now and then too. The service is pretty hit or miss; one girl who helped me made me feel like I was asking for the moon when I asked for some help. On the other hand, the older man at the cash register was really nice. The store front is pretty easy to miss on beretania, but try your hardest to spot a blue sign across from Champions malasadas. Stayed here for 20 hours for a Copics certification class. Owner Flo is super nice and helpful. She's very knowledgeable and I had the pleasure of working with an airbrush system with her in class. This class was put on by Copic so hopefully when they have classes in the islands again, they'll use Hawaiian Graphics as a venue. There are TONS of material and supplies in this store, and they don't waste time and space on the cheap stuff. My mediums: Copic markers (they carry Ciaos and wides too, which I haven't seen in person until this day!), manga paper, dyes and inks. There was also helpful books that I bought too. I saw customers coming in to buy paints, so if you're into that, it might be a good place to look. And they've got ATG refills! Score! They aren't open on Sundays, so keep that in mind if you work a regular 9-5. read more

Art supply stores like this are few and far between. We traveled all the way from Ewa to this little place to find something specific my husband was looking for. Because of its niche in todays world of technology, Amazon, and just being in Hawaii in general, the prices here were a little higher than expected. What we ended up doing is browsing and finding things we wanted and then finding them on Amazon for $5 less. Sorry. We did find a few things that were the same price or unavailable on Amazon so we got it there though. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. They were able to help up located the pen we came here to find. And even though the restrooms are not for the public, when they heard my toddler ask to go potty they let us use their restroom. Although a little pricey, I think we will be back in the future. Art supplies, I think, are things that need to be seen and touched to know that it is a good fit for you. I love this art supply shop. The staff is always helpful and friendly when I'm looking for a particular product. Sure it's not the largest section of art stock compared to mainland, however this is Hawaii, and I do take into account there is less of a demand for certain materials when dealing with less population, so I take that into consideration. I would love to see larger canvas boards in stock, maybe that is something graphics could consider, i.e 36x40, but they do have some available and plenty of oils and brushes to choose from so it works, plus bonus is there typically run specials that help out the bank account. Overall my 5 star rating is for the vibe and tone of the shop..welcoming and fun. Thank you staff for always helping out your customers and listening to us if he have a suggestion. It has been a while since I have bought paint... and the few times I have since I moved to Hawaii I ordered off of eBay or reluctantly purchased from my neighborhood Ben Franklin's Crafts... As a Hanukkah gift for my sister I decided to make her a painting for her new home. I couldn't come to terms with spending close to double for a tube of paint. So I took to the internet and Yelp and looked for another local store. Hawaiian Graphics popped up and seemed to be just what I was looking for. Easy to get to - Heading N on McCully turn left on S. Beretania (at the KFC) and its the second parking lot on the left. Look for blue! I didn't have a lot of time to look around, but the first thing I saw when I walked in the door was 12x12 gallery wrapped canvases, in a 2 pack, at 75% off! WOOOOWEEEE! I had bought 10x10 single canvases at Ben Franklins the week before for $12 a pop and these were 2" bigger and $7.75 for TWO! SOLD! I bought 10 canvases and went for paint! The first floor is all paint materials... canvases, sketchbooks, acrylics, oils, watercolors.... There are a few other floors - with framining materials, and other goodies, but I didn't make it up there. I picked up the matierlas I needed and headed to the checkout. They offered me a membership - with 20% every purchase over $15 - good for FIVE years (Ben Franklins member ship is good for one year and I think it is only 10-15% off). I am in love. read more

Every time I call I say a little silent prayer that someone competent and coherent will answer the phone. I enjoy frequenting this store. If you're just starting out or have even a slight interest, it's not impossible to find what you're looking for here because they have a wide variety of supplies for the common artist. Now if you were going off the wall to find some really unique items, you might wanna try the industrial park. Within walking distance from the Local University, it's easily accessible to art students. If you show a valid school ID from the university or community college, you get a reasonable discount (10%). Even better, when you sign up for a 5-year membership (free of charge), you get a 20% discount. I believe the only requirement is that you must purchase, or have a total sales purchase of $20. Still a great deal! The store occupies two floors. The top floor carries some unique paper types, while the bottom had more of the general art supplies. Staff usually come in pairs (because you don't normally see a bunch of people there at one time), but they're really helpful and can answer any question you have. If there's any criticism, it would be that the supplies are pretty pricey. THAT's not to say they're not worth the purchase, because they are! I guess you could say they provide quality product (which completely negates my critique). Rightfully so that I can't find any negatives with the store. One Word: Awesome-sauce! They're a bit expensive, but everything seems to be expensive here in Hawaii. Too bad the sales staff are some of the rudest, most unhelpful bunch of people I've had to interact with in a long time. Calling ahead of time to ask if they had a specific item and getting a yes over the phone, followed by getting there and having one of their employees say that they didn't have said item and then continue to be very condescending was really unenjoyable. I can't say that I am regular at Hawaiian Graphics, but every time I have gone has been a great experience! The store is large and has everything you would want to find in an art store. I always go to grab a few paint pens here and there. I like to paint my surfboards or the occasional canvas. They always have a full stock of pens on display for me to browse and find exactly what I am looking for. The staff is very welcoming and friendly.
