I enjoyed shopping at Plato's Closet. I walked in to check what they had in stock and ended up buying a whole bunch of clothes. Everything is so well organized from type of clothing (athletic, dresses, sweaters, etc.) to size and even color. They also have some accessories like handbags (including brand names), jewelry, and IPhone cases. They have fitting rooms as well. Everything is so affordable and in good condition. The service is also great. I was asked if I needed help and they did explain the whole selling process to me as well. I noticed most of the reviews were on the selling portion of Plato's Closet. I have yet to try that, but I was told by an employee to keep an eye out on their Instagram page where they tell you what kind of clothing they are in need for. read more

I honestly don't even know why I gave this place a second chance. If I could give this place negative stars I would. I'm deaf, and they already know that. They've texted me before, so there is absolutely no excuse for the complete lack of communication this time. I brought in a full bag of clean, valuable, well-kept clothing, left my number, and waited.... nothing. Not a single text, call, or update. After FOUR hours, I had to come back in myself just to find out what was going on. And the result? They handed me back the entire bag and offered me a pathetic $9. $9 for a whole bag of good clothing, and zero respect or consideration for basic accessibility. It feels dismissive and honestly disrespectful. If you value your time, your items, or just basic communication...especially if you're deaf please don't expect it here. I wish I could give zero stars! Before I went in I check to see what they accept and they have a list so I followed the list. All the clothes I brought in was from forever 21 and express. I believe about 15 items. One or 2 items without a tag so brand new. I waited 2 and half hours for them to tell me that my clothes were too business casual and that they catered to high schoolers. Also asked to used their bag to take the clothes to my car she said no because people were stealing the bags. They're super unfriendly. Oh the 2 item that they wanted to keep they wanted to give me $8. To give to them I'll donate! Never again! I read the reviews and tried overlook cause we all can have different experiences but for you reading the comments don't waste your time going there to sell anything. We made a call before entering and they said okay, it'll be an hour wait. Upon arrival, we had a box of brand name clothes, some with tags, Jordan shoes and Nike athletic wear. We waited 3 hours just for them to grab two lousy shirts and give us 38$ for them. We returned home with almost everything we came in with. Don't waste your time, donate to those in need. read more

So, I decided to make a trip to Plato's today. In the past I had a great experience at this Plato's, but today not at all. I called ahead to ask specifically what they were looking for. They advised they were looking for plus size clothes. I had some from family members. (All of which had tags) I get there and the girl who checked me was super friendly and informative. Nonetheless she told me to check in and it would be 20-30 mins. So I headed to the mall. As soon as I get to the mall, 10 minutes later I get a text my buy is ready. There is no way that my 2 bags could've been gone through in 10 minutes. They also make up their own rules, a girl after me was told she could only bring one bag. This place just is not it. They took almost nothing from my bags even though they said they wanted plus size. Will not be returning. read more

The customer service provided by all was excellent! The store is clean and very organized.

I went to drop off a full bag of clothes and shoes including brand new name brand with tags never worn. I was told it would take an hour for them to go through my bag and it took about 40 minutes. When coming to pick up, I was offered $9 for a pair of Nikes only worn twice and basically brand new and another name brand shirt. They took nothing else in my bag and I know I could get more selling online. Don't waste your time coming here. Instead, sell online with Poshmark. At least you get fair offers. read more

We called this place and asked about selling our clothes. They said they were accepting clothes and told us the season and the categories of items they were accepting. We arrived 30 minutes later with our clothes. We were told that they had reached their budget maximum and were unable to accept clothes. Even after explaining that we just got off the phone with them 30 minutes ago they refused to honor what they told us on the phone. So on Saturday today I went into Plato's closet and I had some really nice clothes that I thought I might have gotten like $45 for because I had a very nice sports bra in there and they didn't take it and they did take a hand-me-down flannel and I only got eight dollars. my experience was not the best I hope this review helped. read more

This store likes to make up rules the day of...now it's only one drop off per day...never had that issue before. The girl said we have to enforce it...ENFORCE WHAT? It's NOT WRITTEN ANYWHERE!!! Then after I made that point, she said she would suggest they do that!! If I'd known that, I would not have returned the same day. Why does that even MATTER??? They are just looking through a bag of clothing! It's not like I'm jumping a turn or anything, nor did I come at a time close to closing. If you don't want to go through another bag of clothing 3 HOURS before closing, then just say that instead of trying to gaslight me into thinking I'm breaking some non-existent rule. read more

Super nice people but definitely do not pay customers enough for their clothes, shoes, accessories etc. I brought in a $500 Tory Burch bag and they offered me $15! :/ I'm also a little confused why they require customers to stay in store when selling or waiting to sell. I did just want to update this and say I was very disappointed in my most recent visit to Plato's closet. I have been selling here for almost a year now and have always gotten fair prices, I cannot say the same as of now. I brought in a brand new pair of exclusive/limited edition shoes worth $175. (Very easy to search the brand/value) I was paid less than $8 and yes, I will go back in to check why they are selling them for. I don't know why I would continue to bring them great quality merchandise when I could've sold them for much more online. The selection was also very disappointing. Everything seemed to be size small or medium and only a few items in anything larger. I came here because they catered to all clientele but maybe not anymore?? I will give them one more chance to see if it's worth continuing to give them my business. read more

I brought in clothes to sell and they made me wait 30 minutes in store just to check-in. Then they gave me no estimated wait time, so I assumed it was quick since I didn't see many bags behind the counter. It took 2.5 hours to go through my 2 small bags. I had brand new items that I had ordered less than a month ago still with tags that they didn't take. They only offered me $10 for 5 items. I love Plato's Closet, I shop at several of them. BUT the Frederick location is hands down the best! The customer service, friendliness and the staffs willingness to go ABOVE and BEYOND for each and every shopper is unmatched! During the COVID shut down I experienced stellar service, even was able to have staff personally shop for me and deliver! This is something I will never forget. Went to sell clothes yesterday and had a attitude filled employee who was bluntly rude. Ive had several different experiences when selling and this was by far the worst. If you decide not to buy something from me you should fold it back up not throw it back in the basket in a ball. I would not recommend selling to this location. out of all the girls that work there, i've noticed they each buy based off their own particular style. I thought my prices for my items were fair. They take newer styles and name brand stuff. I had mostly American eagle, some urban outfitters, Abercrombie, etc. Surprisingly, they take a lot of VS pink hoodies and such if they're in good shape. The girl who went through my clothes was short with me and not very friendly. I did have to wait about an hour for my clothes (they told me about 30-40) and they don't text or call when it's ready. Plato's Closet, Nope!!! I had gone there a few years ago. So, I though Plato's would be a good place to sell clothes, accessories etc. at. They look through my items and they just "picked out what the wanted" to sell in stead of taking them all as I was told. Which they were pretty rude and acting like she did not want to help me at all and I was just wasting her time because I walked in as a customer to sell my clothes!!! I had a few bags to sell (2). While they when through my bags she acted like my items where 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH' to sell in the shop. I had washed my clothes prior to bring them in. They Absolutely had NO stains, holes, tears, or anything like that at all. I though I would be offered more money then what she had given me. I had top of the line clothes, shoes, accessories, etc. So, when it came to pay out, I was told they would call me as well as text me to inform me that I had money on my account for the items that sold. Well, need less to say they DID NOT do either of this to inform me that I had money on my account. Until I went back in to check. You bring your item's that are worth $300.00 to only get $20.00 dollars back. That's a rip off!!!! Especially, when you know that you have good quality and brand name clothes that are NOT in bad shape at all!! They should be offering more money, consider the price that they sell items at!! They sad thing is that they were items that teens would have paid for considering they where all teen clothes and shoes!!!! So, until Plato's Closet makes new changes for fair price to the customer who are selling then and inform the customer regarding there accounts, they will get a one star from me!!! read more

They are so snooty. One would think it's a friendly place since it is at a nice location and caters to a younger crowd.

The theory of the store is great. Gently used clothing, great prices, trendy. This is the problem. After stopping in couple times to sell items I have found myself looking through the shelves. It is more then a stretch to say that these items are gently used, or in good condition. I have found items with holes in them, pilled, inside tags ripped off. The prices are also slightly baffling, a forever 21 sweater that is pilled not new with a tag for $15? Probably retails for $20-$30 new....not quite getting it. Selling, you will get little back but for second hand you probably wouldn't expect much more. Would be nice if there was more incentive to sell. Save yourself the trip, go downtown there are much nicer, higher end resale shops with nicer items that are truly gently worn and fair pricing. Or if you can get to Bethesda Reddz is great and if you plan on selling they offer a higher percentage if you choose a gift card and get more money on your clothes or take the cash. Which is a nice incentive to buy there. read more

I have been to Plato's Closet in Frederick a dozen or more times... and always find something really nice for a great price. I'm wondering if some of these reviews are talking about the same place? I, too, have tried to sell some things and have gotten rejected, boohoo. I just figured that they really are kind of picky. That seems like a good thing to me. (It just seems like bad form to give a bad review because your clothes got rejected by a Plato's buyer.) I also have friends who are a bit more trendy than I am, and they have more success selling their "gently used clothing" to Plato's. I have another friend who buys shoes from Plato's like there's no tomorrow! I usually find jewelry and blouses that I like. They make it clear that they are catering to teens and young women, so if that's not your style, you'll want to find another store. read more

I have taken my teen daughters shopping at Plato's Closet on numerous occasions. They always find plenty of fabulous clothes for reasonable prices: all the stuff that teens and tweens are wearing these days. Seems a lot of the negative reviews for this business are from people who are trying to sell their clothes and are disappointed that Plato's is not interested. My impression of what they tak in is that they're looking for just teen styles and if you bring things that are outdated or for an older crowd, they're not going to be interested. No need to get offended and write a snarky false review. Try a store that takes older clothes. My girls shop here because they want the latest styles. If the store accepted a bunch of 30-something clothes or styles from five years ago, they wouldn't be a great place for younger folks to shop. My teens love it precisely because they are selective about what they take in. If you're looking for good prices on current styles for teens, this is the place. read more

So, don't get your hopes up. It's just like any other consignment shop: some cool finds, a bunch of junk, and very picky buyers. I wasn't expecting much, but after bringing in 100+ items (I had 9 bags of clothes), they only bought 9 items. I understand, I have a lot of stuff that is older, but still in style. I have way too many clothes and am trying to move across the country, so I am getting rid of things I don't wear. I was expecting at least 100$, but only got 40$ and found cute items as I'm waiting for them to look through all my stuff...counterintuitive, I know. But they have things here that they must buy from TJ Maxx, Ross, Target..stuff with the tags still on. I found a Free People shirt with tag on it (98$ originally, down to 14$) and a Lilly Pulitizer dress. But that was after I sorted through the aeropostale, charlotte russe, american eagle, forever 21 trash. I just was thinking to myself, you bought this shirt that was probably 10$ to begin with, and you're not buying my juicy velour hoodie + sweatpant set? I probably wore it 10 times before I realized it sucked, but I'm sure some teeny bopper would love to wear it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO SELL TO THEM. they won't take anything. i brought in mall brand clothes (forever 21, santa cruz, champion, etc..) and they took NONE of it because it was "too worn" or "not in style". both of those things were bs cause id only wore the clothes i brought in a handful of times and THEYRE MALL BRAND ITS LITERALLY WHAT YOU ASK FOR HOW IS IT OUT OF STYLE? just don't waste your time with them you're gonna be disappointed. read more

Not a great place to buy or sell anymore I sold to them a couple of years ago and never walked out with less than $40-$50 This time (mind you I shop at all the same places my style hasn't changed) they took about 4 items and I walked out with $11 I had good Nike sneakers, high brand shirts, good things and they said that they just don't sell that style there. We have visited many consignment shops from Baltimore to Bel Air to Frederick to DC as we have sold a lot of clothes. THis Plato's gave us fair prices on what we brought in and the employees were all friendly and helpful. Seems to have a good selection and good prices. Called before driving 45 min to sell and they said it was fine as long as i got there by a certain time. I arrived an hour and a half before that time and got turned away, and they said all the slots for selling for the day were done. This makes no sense as no one else was in there and none of the employees were doing anything. Selection isn't the best either, always the same items and lack of sizes. read more

This place is great for shopping! Prices can be as low as Goodwill but they're actually in style and the service is great. The employee saw I had kids and showed him where he could play legos. This was before I even realized he was getting bored. Everyone there was friendly. They stay busy and lines cue up quickly, but it's not a big deal. read more
