This funky, gift shop meets treasure trove is worth a stop. The unique gift ideas, funky tchotchkes, and laughable shirts/socks/hats make for a fun afternoon of exploring in downtown Fredrick. My personal favorite was the assortment of fruit and vegetable themed items, my boyfriend really liked the Star Wars collection. The employees engaged in friendly and quirky conversation, fitting the store vibe perfectly. The items were a bit expensive but they do provide a coupon after your first purchase. Given the uniqueness of their items, they seem worth the cost. We have already thought about driving over for another visit. read more

Omg, this store is the BEST- truly a quintessential kitschy souvenir shop. You can definitely kill some time here reading all of the funny and witty quotes on the items-- everything from socks, dish towels, post cards, books, mugs, wall decor, and much more! Covid-19 Update: Retro Metro is ONLINE baby *Said in an Austin Powers Accent.* Cause there's nothing cooler than saying things in an Austin Powers Accent... in 1998. So yeah, I discovered that Retro Metro, one of my favorite little gift shops, in Frederick had moved like almost everything now-a-days online. So I went onto their website and literally within seconds... bought something. I like literally have never been so triggered. I was like- OH MAN, that's cute I'm gonna buy that for my friend %^&*. So the the thing is, I can't tell you what I got cause it's being shipped right now, and I don't want to ruin the surprise for that person. But it's this super cute thing that I know my friend will love. There are very few times I've walked into Retro Metro and haven't walked out with something adorable. And I feel that you get that same experience online. They just have the most unique, cute, fun gifts. ALSO, they have a NICE SIZE Maryland pride section with so much Maryland Flag Swag. How about ice cube trays in the shape of Space Invaders monsters (yeah, you remember that ancient arcade game?), random jewelry pieces, and an extensive gift selection offering something cute, or something classy, for even people who have everything? To top it all off, the staff is super helpful. Case in point: I came in looking for a very specific item on behalf of a friend, and couldn't locate it. The lady at the register went out of her way to call the other shop to see if it was in stock, then offered to take down my address and phone number so that they could ship it to me when it was back in stock. When I calmly expressed disappointment at the VIP program and that I would rethink future purchases-- without calling the person names or raising my voice--I was called a bully. Her statement, sadly, is bullying and was clearly meant to shut me up. So much for supporting a local business: I found the two same exact things on Amazon Prime, at a better price, free shipping. Frederick is such a wonderful downtown with many wonderful, friendly businesses. This isn't one of them. I'm adding this later. I don't appreciate how I was treated, obviously, but I do wish the owner peace and happiness and perhaps to figure out a way to better deal with disappointment from customers. Adorable shop just across the street from Volt Restaurant. A few yelpers and I stopped in after lunch to check it out. As the name indicates, this place is both Retropolitan and Metropolitan. There is inconceivable amounts of nicks AND nacks from wall to wall. Fred merchandise galore and even art grace these wonderful pillars of hope for a generation of quirky consumers. There are kids toys and adult toys alike. And by adult toys I don't mean dildos. I mean a plastic pickle you can use to cork your wine bottle! Okay, that still sounds like a dildo. But for real you'll love the creative merch in this joint. Second time I've been in this store recently, and the girl behind the counter (assume the owner) didn't greet us or acknowledge our presence. She didn't last time either, so I made sure to give eye contact and say hello to her, she didn't even reply. We had something to purchase, but put it back and left, not going back. You cant pick and choose your clientele that walks in and if you don't treat all people equally, you'll be out of business in no time. Such a great little store! Great birthday gifts- always my go-to place when looking for a fun little gift for friends or family. I love their furniture too, but it's very expensive... but they do have a lot of sales and I've seen some great pieces in there for a great prices. An amazing local business in downtown Frederick that sells something small for everyone. It's hard to find something you don't like. So many funny and humorous drink coasters, socks for men and women, and small magnets. They even have Frederick post cards where you can't find at any other store in downtown, which I bought 4 of them for my family in Colorado that used to live here in Frederick. Retro metro is a funky store in DTF that is good for quirky gifts and exploring odd, somewhat trendy curiosities, much like Urban Outfitters gift/furniture selection. Their glassware and apartment style living gear constitutes an interesting collection of what is available in the modern eclectic aesthetic. I appreciate that they carry a number of well-known quirky, joke product lines that would not otherwise be available for purchase in the area anymore (Uglydolls, Blue Q, Fred and Friends, etc.). It takes a fair amount for me to change my opinion of a place, but they really are Ok and a fun place to stop when window shopping downtown. read more
