Covid-19 Update: Retro Metro is ONLINE baby *Said in an Austin Powers Accent.* Cause there's nothing cooler than saying things in an Austin Powers Accent... in 1998. So yeah, I discovered that Retro Metro, one of my favorite little gift shops, in Frederick had moved like almost everything now-a-days online. So I went onto their website and literally within seconds... bought something. I like literally have never been so triggered. I was like- OH MAN, that's cute I'm gonna buy that for my friend %^&*. So the the thing is, I can't tell you what I got cause it's being shipped right now, and I don't want to ruin the surprise for that person. But it's this super cute thing that I know my friend will love. There are very few times I've walked into Retro Metro and haven't walked out with something adorable. And I feel that you get that same experience online. They just have the most unique, cute, fun gifts. ALSO, they have a NICE SIZE Maryland pride section with so much Maryland Flag Swag. Definitely worth browsing around. Perfect place for gifts for pretty much any occasion I can think of off the top of my head. read more

From the entrance and throughout the entire store, you are greeted by funny sayings and little quips! It is so entertaining and there are so many small or even large gifts you can pick-up! I highly recommend going here if you want anything unique or "old school." You are greeted by the staff upon entering and nothing is very expensive! read more

Omg, this store is the BEST- truly a quintessential kitschy souvenir shop. You can definitely kill some time here reading all of the funny and witty quotes on the items-- everything from socks, dish towels, post cards, books, mugs, wall decor, and much more! I bought Obamacare Mints here years ago and people would crack up laughing when I offered them a mint. Today, I purchased some RBG Judgemints-- can't wait to pass them out and judge awayyyyy! read more

This funky, gift shop meets treasure trove is worth a stop. The unique gift ideas, funky tchotchkes, and laughable shirts/socks/hats make for a fun afternoon of exploring in downtown Fredrick. My personal favorite was the assortment of fruit and vegetable themed items, my boyfriend really liked the Star Wars collection. The employees engaged in friendly and quirky conversation, fitting the store vibe perfectly. The items were a bit expensive but they do provide a coupon after your first purchase. Given the uniqueness of their items, they seem worth the cost. We have already thought about driving over for another visit. read more

This store was so cute! Lots of adorable little items, a great place to shop for unique gifts for people. Lots of niche items for all your interests. read more

What do contemporary stylish furniture, artisan candles, and bathroom reader books have in common? They can all be found at Retro-Metro. That's not all. How about ice cube trays in the shape of Space Invaders monsters (yeah, you remember that ancient arcade game?), random jewelry pieces, and an extensive gift selection offering something cute, or something classy, for even people who have everything? To top it all off, the staff is super helpful. Case in point: I came in looking for a very specific item on behalf of a friend, and couldn't locate it. The lady at the register went out of her way to call the other shop to see if it was in stock, then offered to take down my address and phone number so that they could ship it to me when it was back in stock. Later, just after we left, upon discovering that it there was one last item sitting on the counter behind her, she ran after us to tell me she'd found it. -That-, my friends, is taking care of your customers. read more

Cute shop with fun merchandise. However the woman who waited on my son was extremely condescending and rude. I'm all for supporting small businesses. However, basic manners need to be part of the transaction. read more

This is a great gift shop. That label isn't even the perfect one. It's full of so many fun things that help us all feel young. Very well done! read more

Also one of the better stores for gifts in Frederick. I think what sets this one apart is that it sells furniture. Purses Cutting Boards Mugs Magnets Jewelry Coasters Napkins Wall art Stationary Greeting cards Plenty of fun stuff. read more

Fun place for unique gifts. Staff was friendly and cute little place to reminisce about my childhood!! Loved it! Great place to stop by if ur visiting like me! read more

When I calmly expressed disappointment at the VIP program and that I would rethink future purchases-- without calling the person names or raising my voice--I was called a bully. Her statement, sadly, is bullying and was clearly meant to shut me up. So much for supporting a local business: I found the two same exact things on Amazon Prime, at a better price, free shipping. Frederick is such a wonderful downtown with many wonderful, friendly businesses. This isn't one of them. I'm adding this later. I don't appreciate how I was treated, obviously, but I do wish the owner peace and happiness and perhaps to figure out a way to better deal with disappointment from customers. That doesn't mean acquiescing to their demands, but perhaps a more constructive way to get a point across. read more

This is a really cool eclectic store with some chic items you would have to go to many different stores to find. Great place to find a unique gift. They have a lot of stuff packed in here as well. read more

Adorable shop just across the street from Volt Restaurant. A few yelpers and I stopped in after lunch to check it out. It's a great store to find gifts for others - shot glasses, martini glasses, wine/cheese accessories, coasters, kids items, etc. I was able to find a cute birthday gift for my roommate - will post what it is after her birthday because she reads my yelp reviews sometimes. read more

As the name indicates, this place is both Retropolitan and Metropolitan. There is inconceivable amounts of nicks AND nacks from wall to wall. Fred merchandise galore and even art grace these wonderful pillars of hope for a generation of quirky consumers. There are kids toys and adult toys alike. And by adult toys I don't mean dildos. I mean a plastic pickle you can use to cork your wine bottle! Okay, that still sounds like a dildo. But for real you'll love the creative merch in this joint. It's true that you could spend a half hour in here and love everything so much yet not buy one product, but it's a great place to peruse. I'd write more but my friend wants to watch Breaking Bad now. Go here and buy mustache erasers! read more

Super cute contemporary hipster faddy goods that appeal to the uber trendster within me. Bacon toothpaste, mustache candy, UFO ice cube trays...if it's a trend, you can find it here. And yes, while I hate all things so blatantly hipster...I can not deny...this store sucks me in EVERY TIME. Dammit. Just super cute stuff that I am not strong enough to say "no" to. However, if any weeboos should shop here and if I hear a single "KAWAIIIIII" shouted out by any non-Japanese...I will slap you so hard on your head that your brain will fall out. Just giving everyone fair warning. read more

Fun shop with quirky things you won't find anywhere else in town. Love to stop in everytime I go downtown. Really, do not pass this by. Make the trip up the street to find it and go in. It is so much fun! read more

This is the place where they kindly kick my friend and I out because we didn't realize they were closing after we made our purchases and got sucked in to more fun stuff we missed on one wall... Here's the spot. read more

Lots of cool stuff to look at, but there was only one person on duty when I wanted to buy something. I had to wait in line, and so did several other people, for a few minutes before anyone even showed up at the counter. Otherwise, great. read more

Second time I've been in this store recently, and the girl behind the counter (assume the owner) didn't greet us or acknowledge our presence. She didn't last time either, so I made sure to give eye contact and say hello to her, she didn't even reply. We had something to purchase, but put it back and left, not going back. You cant pick and choose your clientele that walks in and if you don't treat all people equally, you'll be out of business in no time. Everything in that shop is available in amazon, cheaper and with free shipping and no tax. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. read more

Fun place, just what you expect to find on "historic" Main Street USA. Offers a bit of everything --- retro/contemporary style furniture, bead jewelry, fridge magnets, quirky gift items, handbags, kids toys & Webkinz.... Really, it's just a fun place to spend some time browsing and laughing after lunch at Laurienzo's (next door) or the Vintage Coffee House a few doors down. There is bound to be something you just can't resist! read more

I could spend all day in this store! So many awesome gifts for everyone. I actually did spend half of my afternoon just reading the hilarious magnets and signs. Brick and mortar store for all the cool Etsy stuff you'd find online. Snagged a floor sample table discounted to $99. My favorite place to find gifts for people that I have no idea what to get them! Great variety & selection. Stuff for adults & kids. I can't make a trip to downtown Frederick without stopping in to see what's new! Prices are reasonable & location is perfect. read more

I left my review months after going to the store. Then they replied to the review talking about my emotional state and my brother? I don't even have a freaking brother. I was in the store alone when I went. These people are clueless. read more

Do you need joint shaped birthday candles? What about a miniature flask keychain? Beaded jewelry? Contemporary furniture? Jewel-shaped ice cubes? Recycled bags/purses? Super cute kid gifts including a child's book about a farting dog? If so, Retro-Metro is the right place. I spent at least 20 minutes looking through this super cute store and ended up buying a fair amount of stuff. This is somewhere I'd definitely shop again. There's also another location in Mt. Airy. read more

Retro metro is a funky store in DTF that is good for quirky gifts and exploring odd, somewhat trendy curiosities, much like Urban Outfitters gift/furniture selection. Their glassware and apartment style living gear constitutes an interesting collection of what is available in the modern eclectic aesthetic. I appreciate that they carry a number of well-known quirky, joke product lines that would not otherwise be available for purchase in the area anymore (Uglydolls, Blue Q, Fred and Friends, etc.). It takes a fair amount for me to change my opinion of a place, but they really are Ok and a fun place to stop when window shopping downtown. read more

socks with swear words. quirky home décor. bacon.everything. if you're in downtown Fredrick, this place is absolutely worth a visit. it's bigger on the inside than it looks from outside and if you don't find thing that make you laugh, you're probably in a bad mood. it's one of those stores that, if you are in the market for that unique gift for that friend or relative who can be tough to shop for, this is place to check out. a lot of the items fit in the motif of the name. pseudo-1950s styled items with a modern flair. it's kitschy. it's fun. and you will want to take things home with you. read more

A really cool little store with prices that are a little too high for me. This is a hipster type place where I see things that I think I should be able to make for a lot cheaper but don't. I like this store, I just think the prices are a little high for some of the items. It is a cool place to stop in and check out. read more

An amazing local business in downtown Frederick that sells something small for everyone. It's hard to find something you don't like. So many funny and humorous drink coasters, socks for men and women, and small magnets. They even have Frederick post cards where you can't find at any other store in downtown, which I bought 4 of them for my family in Colorado that used to live here in Frederick. If you need a gift for someone and you don't know what they like, I promise you will find something in this store. read more

Very cute store. Lots of fun, funny gifts and novelties. I got some clever, relatable gifts for my bffs upcoming birthday.

I love visiting this shop. I have purchased many items for myself and as gifts. They have funny items as well as some Maryland themed items. The staff is welcoming, friendly, and knowledgable. The only downside is that I spend too much money when I come here because I buy so many things XD Highly recommend read more

A little bit of everything you want... but nothing you really need? yep, this store has it. This place is really cute. They have wonderful gifts. I usually stop in here when I am looking for a unique gift. They also have nice furniture and picture frames. Cut stuff. A bit pricey but not enough people working there so I had to leave with no purchase. Line was crazy long and I had no patience for the annoying kids in the store. Please hire more people so your customers don't have to stand in line for 30 minutes to make a $5 purchase... read more

This is the perfect place for small gifts or large. There's plenty of home decor if you're looking for a house-warming gift and a lot of smaller things if you're just there to find something that says "this reminded me of you."
