When you walk into Platinum Micro Electronics, you'll find a few PCs set up in a corner, a counter, and mostly boxes and boxes of equipment that crowd you out. That's the front. Then there's the back which is comprised of workbenches and lots of PCs in the process of being built or repaired. They clearly spend their time working on computers and not on decorating. :) It's not much to look at but that's not why you go there. You go there to get a good quality, reliable computer for a reasonable price. I am a repeat Platinum Micro Electronics customer, dating back to at least 2000. I learned about them when my husband's employer purchased a lab full of equipment from them. I have lost count of the number of PCs I've bought from them. I recommended them to two different employers who subsequently bought several racks of Supermicro servers from them, and in all that time, we had one and only one problem the equipment. When it came time to get a laptop for my son, they helped us out with that too. Why do I keep coming back to Platinum Micro Electronics? Here's a summary; 1) They're cost effective. From the get-go, they provided me with quality, personalized service for a very fair and reasonable price. 2) They're flexible. In addition to being a computer scientist, I am a photographer and dabble in video, I need good processing power, lots of physical memory, high quality graphics, and TONS of hard disk space that can be stored offline, so I have somewhat unique needs for my PC. AWESOME! These guys work with a quiet brilliance that will become Glaringly apparent to anyone in the Business. I worked as an IT guy with them for 3 years and they saved me and mine from disaster after disaster calmly and professionally. I once watched them restore a server for a body shop so covered with dust we could not tell what color it was...they detected BY SIGHT a failed capacitor...rebooted the server, recovered the RAID drive data and backed it up and returned it to the customer WITHIN 12 hours! I've seen them quickly recover drives, restore RAIDs of ALL LEVELS. I've seen them joke and laugh while restoring a NAS that lost its operating system..AFTER the drive controller reported ALL DATA LOST! They patiently and completely explain problems as they work to resolve them under less than IDEAL circumstances. My boss once threatened to fire me if I did not return to the office with a restored hard drive...and they DELIVERED! You got special needs? You got requirements? I use my PC for digital audio recording, and off-the-shelf computers are not an option. I put together my last 2 from barebones kits, but this time I was overwhelmed by motherboard choices, microprocessor choices and other things. So I called Matt. He patiently listened to my requirements, what I was using it for, and made a recommendation shortly. Within a few days a carefully packed brand new computer arrived, and after testing it with my programs, I found it fit my needs perfectly. I have learned over the years that it's a better use of my time to let experts do something that I do only slightly well. While they are extremely friendly when they sell you a product, that attitude changes in the event you come back for assistance with it. This is somewhat surprising, given the primitive, desktop boat anchors they sell are rapidly becoming obsolete with the rise of tablets. Used to make great computers that I used for me personally and my whole company. Now pass off the next generation of "great gaming computers" that can't handle even the simplest of games with specs that should easily allow it. If calling they blame it on too many programs running in the background or whatever else they can think of though they have been known to have been messing up over and over again lately. Will not admit to a mistake and has messed up the last 3 PC's bought from there and charges for fixing their own mistakes, treats customers with problems like idiots irregardless of your computer knowledge and their service is slow as they do not seem to care about the problems that they believe the consumer is always responsible for. Pass it up for pretty much ANY other small computer store or even buy directly from a manufacturer, these people have stopped caring about their field. read more
