I needed a quick repair to my work laptop and reached out to The Eldest Geek (plus a few others) for a quote. These guys were one of the fastest and most comprehensive to reply, which is why I chose them. I ended up delayed, and arrived after 6pm (their closing time) on a weekday. However, Derek waited for me and still did the repair, which was super nice! (Unfortunately, their phone goes straight to voicemail after 6pm, and the store is on the second floor with a locked stairwell door, so I was standing in the parking lot, frantic, for about ten minutes before I got SUPER lucky and found a guy who used to work security for the building and had Derek's cell phone number. He just happened to be in one of the other stores. Without his help, I would've had no way to reach Derek, even though he was expecting me. Not ideal; I wish Derek had been watching for me out the window, or even called me to check on me.) Anyway--once I finally made it upstairs, the repair was quick and affordable, and Derek answered all my questions as he worked. Craig was outstanding! He identified that my WD Mybook Live had a virus and wiped my ability to log in. As a result, it rendered it unusable with a possibility of 2TB of archived storage from a decade of archiving gone. Craig, through he obvious talents, was able to access the data and I am now the proud owner of ~12TB array using QNAP. He setup everything and integrating it along with mapping the drive with my main system was relatively easy. I went in recently to get the screen replaced on my 2017 Macbook Pro and had a good experience with Craig. He's a very welcoming and friendly man that provides quality service at a reasonable price, and my screen replacement went well! My only complaint was that I didn't receive any updates regarding the status of my service nor any estimate of when to expect it to be done, and I constantly had to call to ask for any updates or an estimate. I arrived at TopTech/The Eldest Geek yesterday afternoon with a completely non-functional computer. The previous night, my boyfriend and I had tried to replace the battery in my computer, but there was a screw that wouldn't come out. When I tried to turn the computer back on, it wouldn't work at all. I took it to our IT guy at work and he wasn't able to get the screw out either, and couldn't get the computer to turn back on. Craig looked at my computer and said he would be able to get the screw out and replace the battery (which I had bought myself) in three days. I resigned myself to using my crappy work-issued computer for the next few days. I got a call later that afternoon that my computer had already been fixed. I wanted to replace the graphics card in an HP EliteBook 8540w laptop. I requested estimates for doing the work. Given those who responded, Craig 's estimate for cost and time required to perform the work was the most attractive. As for the time required to perform the work, around lunchtime on 6 February 2020, I handed it to him and around lunchtime of the next day, I got it from him. As for the cost, the actual cost was less than the estimated cost. I inspected and tested the product (my laptop), it looked good and passed my tests. I will never take my computer to another repair shop. I had a laptop that had a lot of water spilled on it and it would not turn on. I took it to Apple and they said it would be $1000 and that I would lose all my data. It would probably also take a month to repair. I then brought the laptop to a data recovery center and they told me it was lost. I then found Craig and TopTech/Eldest Geek on Yelp. The Eldest Geek Guys are honest, reliable computer experts with excellent customer service that fixed both an HP laptop and an iPod Touch for me. Located on the 2nd floor of Mt Vernon Antique Center might sound unusual, but once you see their simple yet efficient set-up and get quoted an extremely reasonable price for service, you'll understand the value of low overhead costs. For someone that has thrown money at cars and boats that were well past their prime, it was refreshing to get an honest and clear assessment of future use/value of my electronic devices from these guys and then decide whether I wanted them serviced. They answered all my questions and were very straightforward and honest about what options I was looking at with my devices. Both the HP laptop and the iPod Touch still had good use/viability and these guys put them both back to prime working order in less than 24 hours. I wholeheartedly recommend these guys and will only use them in the future to fix my computers/phones/etc. FYI: closed Tuesdays but open every other day including Saturdays and Sundays. Parking is ample on either side of the building and there is a convenient street behind the building to re-enter traffic safely so you don't have to try to make a left turn out onto the highway. read more

Somehow I completely messed up my Windows 7 operating system on my old Lenovo T430 Thinkpad. Even though I have many years of experience as a web developer, I had no clue how to fix this. I researched as much as I could, but clearly fixing operating systems on laptops is not my forte. Ihad actually bought a laptop from Craig back in October, which is lightning fast, and it was backed by Craig, so Iknew I was getting the real deal. Unfortunately, I haven't had a lot of time to play with, as I couldn't bring it with me to Mexico. I had a messed up keyboard so I took it to Top Tech. After 6 phone calls and visiting their office 5 times I finally got my laptop back. AFTER TEN MONTHS!!!!! And it was still not working properly and was damaged by the shop. They offered to repair the damage but it was too late for me. Excuses I was given: COVID-19, slow shipping on part from China, they forgot about my computer, and lastly they forgot about my computer again. This almost went to civil court. I went in there last week because the top lid of my laptop became unattached. This quickly became a problem because I could no longer close the lid safely, without breaking it. Alex was able to quickly identify the problem with one of the hinges, and indicated that this issue was pretty typical for Thinkpads. He was able to remove the hinge temporarily so that I could at least close and open the lid, without causing further damage. He diagnosed the problem in that the actual hinge is fused into the laptop lid itself, so there was no way to just replace the hinge. The entire laptop lid with screen needed to be replaced. Although their store has tons of parts for any type of system you could think of, they didn't have the screen that was specific for my laptop. The T430 has a very specific type of configuration, so simply swapping the screen with a similar Thinkpad screen would not have worked. He offered to drive himself to their parts warehouse which was 25 miles away, to look for an affordable used screen that could be used to replace my broken one. The other alternative was to order the part online, which we decided to do because I wasn't going to have this guy drive all the way to the parts store. Anyway, a couple of days later, the laptop top screen arrived, which appears to be brand new, and he installed it within 30 minutes. Great job! read more

My Windows 10 computer hadn't been updated for four years because it became blocked at 80% of the download. Another computer tech said it could not be updated so it would stay as it was or I could purchase a new 10 or 11 necessitating reinstalling and paying for all of the apps on a new computer including Quicken which is complex and now requires monthly fees. With the existing computer I couldn't scan which is very important for my work. I advised Craig of the problem of scanning and instead he saw the update problem with Windows which he thought should be fixed first. I told him I didn't think that could be done but he disagreed. After many hours including two all night updates Craig was able to update the existing Windows 10! He then was able to get the scan app to work. He also transferred emails from "Live Mail" to AOL. I emailed Craig that he was a "miracle man" to get done what he did and for the time and effort involved he quoted a very reasonable fee. Craig is excellent. read more
