I had a really terrible experience here. My wife and I went in for a drink and a snack. I ordered a Bloody Maria which was just ok. When I got the bill, I noticed that the server charged me $15 extra for premium liquor (Patron Silver) that I didn't ask for and couldn't even taste. This was really skeevy and it would keep me from going back again. It's dishonest to charge someone for premium liquor without them ordering it. read more

I had the burger at lunch and have been on the toilet for most of the afternoon. Perhaps it was a food allergy, but I have not had any before and burgers have never had this effect before. Our party had a delightful meal on a cool December Saturday during a quiet and uncrowded time (school vacation) which is not always the case at the PINE. Among the selections were the grilled swordfish which was quite good, the slow-roasted salmon which was delivered to us as smoked salmon on bagel (this may have been due to our inability to clarify the order) and the spicy beef tartare which came without bread or toast. The server was quite accommodating however and upon request brought cut-up baguette to the table. The service was friendly, prompt and courteous as usual. read more

I've been to this restaurant several times and it gets worse each time. The menu rarely changes so I asked the waitress why and she told me that they change the accompaniments only. We went a couple nights ago and it will be our last time. The fish and the vegetarian dish were cold when we got them and in addition they were nothing special but VERY PRICY. I don't mind paying more for a meal if it's fine dining but anyone can pour salt on a piece of fish and slap it on a plate. I felt SO bad for the waitress because she was working outside tables and was also trying to take care of 3 inside tables. After not being waited on for several minutes I asked the water boy if the waitress knew we were there he said " I will tell her. We keep telling the Manager that there are too many tables per waitress." If he can figure it out shouldn't the restaurant manager be able to figure it out? The decor and the atmosphere of this restaurant is fantastic but if they want to price their food so high they need to ensure that the food is well prepared by a good chef and delivered to the customer while the food is hot, particularly fish! read more

The Pine is probably the best fine dining option in the Upper Valley. The food is creative, interesting, and consistently deliciously-prepared. Service is always professional and friendly without being over-the-top. Ambiance/décor is modern, classy and comfortable. The cocktails/bar are top notch, although I do wish they offered a selection of local hard ciders (which, as of January 2108, they do not). Given the proximity to Dartmouth, it can be crowded and difficult to score a reservation at times, particularly when parents are visiting, but it is worth the effort. read more

The place looks lovely but I have had to reschedule 2 dinners now with guests at the College because they could not find anything to eat on your menu. Finally a restaurant worth going to in Hanover. The Pine had great food, great vibe and attentive wait staff. I have had dinner and brunch here and both were top notch. One thing I recently learned is that if you eat at the restaurant valet is free! Great food, I highly recommend the Hanover Burger as it was cooked to perfection topped with deep fried onions and a great aioli and an unknown spicy tang. Everything else was very good, only compliments for the food. Parking was easy but sadly only with a 3 hour limit. It was Monday and our first visit, but to be honest it was sub par. $300+ for 4 people (2 cocktails a piece, apps, entree, and 3 desserts) you expect a certain level of service and food. Gnocchi was mush but sauce was flavorful, halibut was a little over done but tasty with raw fennel, and shortcake was bland. Drinks were ordered after apps were delivered and didn't arrive until entrees were finished. Again it was Monday but prices remain constant as should quality. Another extremely disappointing and expensive meal at Pine today. I ordered the Express Lunch and got the tomato soup ( barely warm and separated with oil) and the Cubano which was nothing like a Cubano. The pork inside was like a canned spam- pork pressed into a completely tasteless loaf with kimchi that was not good at all. My friend and I both got the Cubano and we both found it almost totally inedible. And we paid $30 each for a bad half sandwich, mediocre soup and a cappuccino ( the only good thing). The food, cocktails, and ambience are pretty good (3.5-4 stars), but the service is incredibly pretentious. Pine is in Hanover Inn, across from Dartmouth Campus, and shouldn't be surprised when students/graduate students/post-docs try to eat there, sometimes without a reservation(!) or business-casual attire(!). Pine "participated" in Hanover's first Restaurant Week this year. In other cities, this is an opportunity to try different restaurants at affordable prices. When I asked Pine if they had a special menu for Restaurant Week, the hostess laughed, exchanged a look with another employee, and had the employee tell me that they did not because they "thought their menu was already special". Another time, a friend and I went for lunch and were given the most egregious "up and down" look when we walked in without a reservation and wearing jeans. The extremely put upon hostess then found us a table quite easily. Pretty Woman much? The actual fare is good, but I can't rate Pine more than a 3 because, really, why so rude? read more

I had gotten mixed signals from people about PINE so I decided to go check it out. I was very pleased with my experience. The food was phenomenal. I had the "Slow Roasted Salmon with melted leeks, beluga lentils and smoked bacon". It was one of the best cooked Salmon I have had. They have a nice bar so drinks are great. I had heard that the service was a little lackluster, but I didn't find it anything horrible considering they haven't been open for a while. I will start by saying that the food here was very good. I had a pork belly appetizer that was moan-inducing and my husband ordered a pasta dish that elevated pasta to an experience. That said, I'd like to comment on the service. We arrived at 4:30 since we were dining with our three children aged 8,6 and 6. We came armed with books and the kids were great. The hostess told us that she had been worried when we arrived half an hour before we could be seated for dinner, but that she was very impressed with our children. Our waiter, however, did not seem impressed. In fact we hardly made any impression on him at all since it was 25 minutes before he came to take our order for drinks. I finally asked the hostess if we even had a server and it was at that moment that he choose to appear. I am curious by nature, so I like to try to imagine why a person who holds such obvious scorn for diners or for service, would choose to become a waiter. If I am being generous I imagine this man was devoted to excellence in dining, but did not believe that excellence could be achieved with young children. If I go with my gut, then I think we were being put in our place for some offense, perhaps the offense of showing up for dinner at 4:30, perhaps for procreating and then dining out with our progeny. After taking out order we had to beg for a bread basket. The kids' drinks did not arrive until their entrees did after I asked about them. In the end my husband waited for fifteen minutes with his credit raised like a white flag so that we could pay the bill and leave. We were there for two and half hours, not because we were savoring a multi course meal, but because the service at our particular table was so appalling. The three tables around us came and left before we did. One of them, two women, even commented on how our children had behaved really well in spite of our long wait. I had the sense that on the whole, the staff at Pine is kind and courteous, but our waiter was one of the biggest snobs I have ever encountered in a restaurant. read more

Having finally tried Pine, I can safely say it's about my last choice for dining in Hanover. I hate to write a negative review on Yelp, but I'm hoping to save others from an overpriced / sub-par experience. There are many better options in town. The good: - Nice decor. We sat outside on the patio with views of The Green. The bad - where to start? - It took over half an hour from when we were seated to when we received our drinks (a beer and a glass of wine, nothing complicated) - The server, while nice, was incredibly inattentive. He forgot that he'd taken our order, then brought another table's order, and finally brought ours - My chicken was incredibly bland (especially disappointing at $30 /plate) and my request to have the bacon left off was not honored Neither of us are high-maintenance diners, but at this price point, I would have expected decent service and decent food. We had to wait 15 minutes without a reservation, but service was warm and professional, the wines by the glass competent and reasonably priced, and even my cappuccino with dessert was way above average. The poor couple next to us for flat beer and it was mostly all head. Usually have a good experience here but probably will stay away for awhile. I am currently attending an intense graduate level program in the area and this past week some of my colleagues had mentioned PINE; therefore, we decided to make a reservation. I had some of my own reservations after reading the current posts. However, we had a fantastic evening at PINE. Myself and two others arrived early and decided to have a before dinner cocktail. This was a great idea! We enjoyed a muddled raspberry cocktail which was not presented on the menu; however, crafted by the tender upon our request! George, a manager, who was very attentive suggested a bottle of wine for the table upon our request. He genuinely suggested a unique bottle that matched exactly what we were looking for (including price!) Personally, my food was extremely tasty and the beef tartar even reminded me of a visit to France when I was younger ! Every single person at my table thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Keep up the good work, PINE! There really is no other place like this in Hanover! read more

Been here several times and always enjoy the experience to the fullest... partially because it's always nice to get a reprieve from the standard Upper Valley fare, but also because I always have wonderful service, I enjoy the ambiance, and like the food. As a vegetarian there aren't enough options, but I still enjoy what I've tried. This includes the Chopped Salad at lunch, the Leek & Potato Soup, some type of pumpkin pancake at brunch which were amazing, and the couscous dish at dinner. As I said, would love for there to be more vegetarian options but I'll likely keep visiting every so often anyways. read more

I went to Pine for lunch, and had the burger. It was really nicely done and well-presented. In fact, everything about this place was nicely done and well-presented, right down to the beautiful way they served my hot tea. The server was personable and attentive--a great guy. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. On my way out, I literally bumped into a man walking around the corner. He apologized and then asked if I enjoyed my burger. It took me a second to realize I had bumped into the restaurant manager. He actually recognized me and remembered what I ordered. Wow. That's someone who cares about his work! A lovely place. We had breakfast at Pine during our stay at the Inn. It's an attractive room and the service was good. I opted for the homemade corn beef hash and eggs and my wife had eggs Benedict on a potato pancake and spinach ....both above average. It's sad when breakfast is poorly executed and we were not disappointed. If you are looking for something a little nicer than a diner .... This is the place. My only criticism is an upscale breakfast should include freshly squeezed OJ not the tropicana obviously served. read more

I eat here frequently when visiting Hanover because the place is right in the hotel... I really really REALLY wish that the food wasn't so darn fussy, everything sauced and rich and complicated. Lovely presentations, nice flavors, but for goodness sakes, Pine, you're in a hotel, how about just a HINT of comfort food or something straight-away now and then? PLEASE????? I've only been here for lunch. They have a small, weak vegetarian selection. I don't eat meat so I can't speak to most of the menu. The token veg option used to be a deviled egg sandwich, which was disappointing: egg and mayo slathered between slices of mediocre, crumbly bread. That's no longer available (gee, I wonder why?), and they've replaced it with a margherita pizza. The pizza is honestly the worst pizza in Hanover -- and that's saying a lot considering EBAS. It tasted reheated -- the crust was sort of stale and the cheese too firm and chewy. The last time, I ordered the gnocchi without the bacon. The gnocchi was soggy (I prefer it with some bite), and the sauce bland. The caramelized onions are a nice touch, though. There are no vegan options at all, FYI, unless you get a salad. Hanover is conservative in many ways, and I understand Pine is not trying to cater to a cosmopolitan demographic, but it needs to wake up to the 21st century and start offering a larger selection of veg*n food, as well as more exciting, flavorful fare. I've never heard anyone say they want to go to Pine for the food. My rating for the food alone would be a 1, but I'm giving a 3 because of the decor and presentation, and because the lunch prices are very reasonable for a "fancy" restaurant. My husband and I have come here for lunch, dinner, and drinks and we always leave satisfied with our experience. The food is great and their creative cocktails are delicious. We love going to PINE! On one occasion, I asked our waitress if the kitchen could write Happy birthday on my husband's choice of dessert and they actually had little candies with Happy birthday already written on them to place on top of the dessert. Our waitress also made his dessert complimentary on the bill which was very sweet of her. read more

I can honestly say that I had the worst experience of my life today. Not only was the waiter, SEAN, extremely rude, but he also berated me and my friends for asking for a latte and more ketchup. The waiter then inquired why we were ordering more food -- which felt fat phobic and was extremely insensitive and triggering for my friend who struggles with eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia). SEAN also called us privileged for ordering more food (you think he would want us to order more for a tip??!). We were shocked by these remarks as we were being very kind and considerate to him asking him how his day was going etc. Instead of having a positive attitude that someone in the service industry should have, he continued calling us grumpy which was extremely rude and untrue. He also told us that After these series of horrifying, personal attacks on our character from a man, SEAN, who we met 2 minutes ago, we were afraid that he would spit in our food. He then never came back to the table, and our food took 30 minutes to arrive. This was extremely disappointing as we usually have amazing service at Pine, and the wait staff is very kind and generous. Sean is a disgrace to the Pine brand. read more

I reviewed the other reviews and am surprised. I am a local and have been there approximately 8 times. Sometimes there for cocktails and 2 others for dinner. As you will read, I don't know why I kept trying... Host: Let's start with the greet at the door. Don't bother showing up without a reservation. Expect the "host" to be dismissive when you do not have one and offer a 9:30 pm time. Note the empty tables throughout the setting, which is confusing. Maybe there is about to be a rush, but having had cocktails there and observing, that was not the issue. Maybe it the lack of staff to attend to tables. Food: Each time we attempted to eat there, our food was either over cooked or cold, as in was microwaved too little to reheat the steak. One time dining, I had a server call one of us at the table a "liar" when the comment was made wondering "if the food was frozen previously." This server never apologized and never came back to the table. Gone. We had to seek other servers for any needs (e.g. our reheated food, water, drinks) and the bill. Money: Bring lots of cash. Lots. 4 small steak medallions will run you about 38 USD. Not worth the money. Other Diners: One night we watched some of the Dartmouth Business School students insult staff, dismiss servers, and were caustic with others. Expect an air of acting entitled. Perhaps this influences the ambiance, price point, and interactions from servers. Nevertheless, the food was substandard each time, with little effort to rectify. read more
