Drats. I want to rate Poor Thom's Tavern 4.5 stars but the app doesn't let me. Poor Thom's is an excellent escape to a quaint tavern with good people and lovely food. It's also so picturesque - walking in from the outside - during a snowfall. I have fond memories of the dishes I've enjoyed here. The service is rapid and earnest. The ambience here is subtly-modern tavern. The first dish they do well is the basic pepperoni wood-fired pizza. It has a very substantial-by-way-of-sturdy crust: I want to say there is a dusting of corn meal beneath the bottom of the pizza, though not sure. Maybe that is why they name one of their featured pizza's, "Dust Pan." Poor Thom's pizza leftovers have been my sustenance, at times. My favorite pizza here is the Sugar Shack with Granny Smith apples, caramelized onions, smoked bacon and a maple syrup drizzle. This one is a real treat which I wish I could have all of the time. Seriously. I also love the Shepherd's Pie, here, which I don't see on the current online menu. They might prepare it for you, anyway, if they have the ingredients that evening. It's a refined take on the classic Irish pie with ultra-diced meat and veggies and exquisite flavors from the combination and seasonings. It's also the most gorgeous Shepherd's Pie I've seen. The samosas are awesome, crispy and substantial, though I did not have the best experience with the spicy green chutney once. Their buffalo and sweet Thai Chili wings rock! Favorite. Love them for how crispy they are. The burgers are good though not as memorable as the previous dishes I've mentioned. Their fries are very good especially with honey mustard. 5 stars just for how kind and nice everyone was here! This is a great option for a meal if in the area. Located in a quiet, unassuming residential area, was pleasantly surprised this place existed. Very conveniently located and not terribly far from Dartmouth's campus. Awesome outdoor seating area, and a warm, cozy interior. First thing you'll notice when walking in is how nice everyone is. Enjoyed some nice beers on tap, and had some satisfying food. From what we ordered, our highlights were the maple sriracha wings (get!), calamari, chicken sandwich, and fish&chips. Our only thing we were slightly unimpressed with was the duck poutine - didn't seem very poutine-ish, and not a lot of cheese curds. Definitely coming back if I'm in the area! read more

A couple girlfriends and myself made a reservation for a Tuesday night a couple weeks ago. (Website recommended a reservation.) We had the loveliest server, tall dark haired middle aged woman ( my memory can't recall her name.) She was so attentive, prompt, and just warm and friendly. Our entrees were delicious. one of my girlfriends has severe allergies and they catered to her, she loved her black bean burger. French onion soup, beet salad, and baked haddock were very good. Service was excellent but they ran out of things on the menu on a Friday night before 7pm. No Mashed potatoes for the meatloaf, pizza (all of them) and some other things I can't remember. They need to do better preparation for the weekend crowds seeing as it's probably one of the better restaurants in the area. read more

They have no reason to be so pretentious. Been here several times as my child attends school nearby. I like to pop in for an app and Bev when visiting. Each time, I wait a long time before being greeted. Always made to feel awkward about not having a reservation only to see many open tables. Arbitrarily makes up waiting times while tables supposedly reserved remain empty. Hostess is self-important. Go to Lebanon or Hannover. More options, friendlier staff. read more

Definitely worth the drive. Yes indeed. New place, fresh, clean smell, excellent service and great food. We came here after an undue and needless waiting time for a routine visit to the doctor in Lebanon, so we were a bit on the edge of nerves. That all went away in a hurry when we entered here. The place smells new even though it's relatively not. Clean and airy. The building is separated into two large rooms with a bar in between and plenty of sound protection so the usual laughter and merriment at the bar doesn't carry into the more intimate dining room ambiance. We were greeted by a Maitre D' who asked our preference for seating. We chose the dining room and were shown to a window table. Our waiter was a school teacher in the process of reactivating his credentials and it was obvious that customer service and friendliness were part of his ethos. He managed to establish a relationship with each one of the six or seven tables being served. Always courteous and knowledgeable. Apart from the ambiance and outstanding service, food was delicious. I had the Fisherman Platter, an upscale Fish and Chips with added delicious shrimp and stuffed Quahog that came accompanied by home made slaw. Enough food for two. But I was starving after fasting for a delayed medical. My other half had the medallions of beef that was finger-licking. We will be back to try some of their other menu selections, their pulled pork, their chicken and kimchi, steamed mussels, duck poutine and roast beef salad. And their wood-fired pizza. In short, a delightful drive to a quaint town, dinner at a superb restaurant with amazing service and great food and an outstanding evening. read more

We have been fans of this local favorite since it's first day, mostly because it's such a unique place for our village. That said, over the years, we have come to see just how unique Poor Thom's Tavern is: nestled in a village that has only one traffic light, across the street from the post and beam barn library, Poor Thom's Tavern is a nostalgic throwback with excellent food and service. You almost always see a familiar face, but more importantly, you see friendly faces. It's also wonderful that you can eat both indoors and outdoors and it's great to spend some time after dinner walking around outdoors in the mellow countryside. We like this place, everything we have tried was g9d, the portions are substantial and the prices are reasonable. The staff are very friendly and work hard. Like many places, they could apparently use more staff, but that's a pretty common occurrence nowadays. All in all, we'll be back. read more

I encountered the owner and he was most friendly. I asked him what one meal he would make his best friend on the menu and he suggested Thom's fish fry. He said he worked a while until perfecting his recipe. He said people like the salmon.. but the gentleman next to me at bar recommended "the special" referred to the Tavern Dip! Shaved primed rib, Swiss cheese, caramelized grilled onions, fresh made baguette, au jus amd a special horseradish sauce.. homemade fresh cut deep fried French fries with a side of ketchup. It was outstanding! I will definitely be back for more of this menu. The owner, Thom.. said all the food is freshly made, all his recipes use fresh ingredients... I waited around during Trivia night on a Tuesday and the atmosphere was very community based.. everyone seems to know one another.. and I waited for the Apple blossom pastry:) must have:) the service staff were also amazing! Stopped by here one late Friday night around 8. It was a 15 minute late since the place was slightly small, but I think it was worth it. I had a Moscow mule to drink and it was quite tasty. I loved the duck poutine fries; great spin on poutine and one of the best I've tasted in NH. We also had the wings, which I highly recommend. For dinner, I had the Tavern Dip and I found it to be average. I loved the horseradish sauce to dip, though. read more

I am an admitted food snob my kids would tell you ai wax a food critic in my first life. I stumbled across this place because I searched for spinach artichoke dip near me. I ordered the potato skins to start let's just say phenomenal. Then ordered a burger outstanding overheard a table say Creme brûlée wait all three of my favorites at one place no way. Wowzers that may have been the best panini I ever had! The turkey was freshly cut, with just enough red peppers, perfectly cooked bacon and the pesto was amazing. The parmesan focaccia was panini'd to perfection! The french fries were also awesome: crispy on the outside, hot and soft on the inside with just enough salt. Hubby enjoyed his french dip sandwich as well. Everything came out to us HOT and quick and the place was SO clean. Service was amazing and we will definitely be back! read more

I had not planned on writing a review of Poor Thom's Tavern but my dining companion encouraged me to do so. Hence, please forgive me for not having any photos. On Tuesday, Oct 17, I was treated to dine at this 'new to me' tavern. The location couldn't be nicer, right off NH Rte 120 in Plainfield/Meriden. Just on the other side of 120 is KUA. At first, it was curious to me why a resto would locate here, but it was soon apparent that not only would the faculty and students of KUA be regulars, but many local residents of the area would find it appealing to have their own watering hole with decent food. When we arrived, we chose to seat at the bar/tavern instead of the dining room. We were told there will be a large party (20+) arriving soon for their beer diner and perhaps the tavern would be a tad quieter. Throughout the evening, the tavern had about four or five tables of diners with another three or four people at the bar. At no time did the noise level become intrusive; I am super sensitive to noise levels. In fact, at no time, did I notice the 20+ guests in the dining room. The resto was well kept, clean and well lit. At 58, I don't want candle lit dinners - that just means I can't read the menu. Service was excellent. Our waitress, Beth, was attentive, swift and efficient, all with a welcoming smile. Bravo! My companion and I both ordered the French Onion soup. I ordered the Lucy burger while he ordered the Smokehouse burger. Food came out fast and piping hot. The soup had delicious melted and crusty cheese on top; very yummy and chewy (in a good way). The soup was over salted. While I have often find that restos over salt their soups to mask the lacking of real flavors, this was more salty than I had anticipated. My companion agreed. The hand 'punched' fries that came with my burger could be a bit more crispy/crunchy. It was slightly on the soggy side. Good flavor, however. My Lucy burger was served on a Portuguese roll, reminiscent of EBA's. My mid rare burger was mid well. All the flavors worked very well together, however. Loved the crispy fried serrano peppers in my burger. They gave some great texture to every bite. The burger was big and the fries aplenty. In fact, in looking around at other diner's dishes, portions are VERY generous. The Fish Fry looked like it can serve a whole Chinese family! All in all, it was a wonderful experience. I would love to come back to try the fish fry. Since I live in Hanover, I am spoiled by many lovely area restos within a quick drive. Poor Thom's is about 15 minutes from the Lebanon Green. - just far enough away to make me think twice to make this a regular dining spot. But, it certainly is worth a try!! I'll be back! read more

The brunch at this place is very good. Usually my go to Sunday morning spot. The specials are creative more times than not but the biscuits and gravy is always a solid choice, very hearty. Good variety of drink specials for the morning after a long night too. Bloody Mary is pretty good, maybe it's personal preference, but a bit heavy on the horseradish. I order regardless though. Very much worth the drive. Will most certainly return. Keep up the good work! read more

I really want to love this place - it is local and employs a lot of local people - however, the order is always wrong, the wait is always long and they are always understaffed. Anyone who says differently is just trying to romanticize a local eatery. If you want to eat what you ordered in a timely fashion - keep driving. read more

My wife and I were looking forward to our first visit to Poor Thom's. We had heard good things about this place. It is a nIce physical space. We sat in the bar area, it was a Tuesday evening and it was not very busy when we arrived. We ordered a couple of beers and looked over the menu. It's mostlly pub fare food, which is perfectly fine. Once we placed our order we waited nearly an hour to receive our food. The bartender/waitress said a large party in the dining room had ordered just ahead of us, which may well have been so, but there was barely anyone else in the dining room. The large party appeared to be about 6 people. We can't imagine how long we might have waited if it had been really busy? Once we finally did get our food, both my wife's and my food was not correct. My wife had ask for no onions on her burger, yet it was covered in onions. The waitress was very apologetic and offered to have another prepared. We declined as we didn't want to wait any longer to eat. My chicken sandwich also had tomatoes on it, which I had specifically requested to be left off, not a big deal I just took them off but the lack of attention to details is concerning. That said, the food was tasty despite the above. While the waitress was very apologetic, and claimed that our experience was definitely not the norm, it would have been appropriate to have offered us something to recognize our prolonged wait, a beer, a discount off the check, but nothing was offered. All in all it was a disappointing experience. Not sure if this was just an off night, or this is the norm? With a 25 minute drive from WRJ, we will have to think twice about visiting Poor Thom's again. read more

My first time there and we were the only couple in the restaurant at 4pm on 8/20/17. Once we placed our order, it took 30 minutes to get our appetizer. The appetizer was potato skins and they were good. Our meal came out about 10-15 minutes later and it was very good as well. So far so good except for the amount of time it took to get our appetizer. The menus were dirty and had spatter spots from previous dining experiences (and no they aren't laminated). After 2 and 3 more couples arrived the noise level was getting unbearable as you had to yell at your dinner date so she could hear you, reminiscent of talking in a crowded tunnel. read more

Looked promising on arrival, very nicely kept building, interior is cozy, clean, sort of a classy pub feel, with a bar area and a dining room separate. Both had a good vibe, loud. Was very busy when we were there, looked like a very young staff, and the ratio of servers to customers looked low. Bartender had to wait tables, which is never a good thing for speed of drink service. Menu is pub fare with some slightly more complex gastro entrees. Tap list was okay for NH, wish pubs would push their distributors for more NH beers. Only 2 (of 8?) taps from NH. Smutty and Moat Mtn...there's lotsa other good NH choices. Food was a let down. Caesar salad was indistinguishable from a million other caesars, dressing was likely bottled, shredded parm, uninspired. Chicken wings were undercooked, a little too chewy and bland. Fondu was good but odd presentation: came with big cubes of processed ham, very little bread, but the sliced pears were a nice touch. Overall, disappointing food experience BUT willing to try again given that location is nicely put together, staff was nice (even under duress), and I'm hoping that an inspired chef comes along and saves the kitchen... read more

Short 15 min drive from Lebanon Green along Route 120 to Meriden. Ample parking, very clean, prompt greeting and seating. Pizza selection with toppings not seen elsewhere - try the dustpan for something different. Nice wine and beer selection and full bar. Salad selections are good, roasted beet with balsamic dressing is special due to yummy dressing and addition of shredded cheese and sunflower seeds plus a toasted crostini. Pulled pork is made in house and yummy, yummy and mashed potatoes are to die for! A few well thought out and prepared upscale options too. Something for everyone. Always enjoy our time here. read more
