Overpriced, pretentious, very poor service, food is ok but nothing more. The cocktails are excellent, and the service at the bar was fine, but getting cocktails at a table was a nightmare: we sat for 10 minutes at a dirty table, nobody came to clear it or give us menus. I tried to flag down a server, but nobody was making eye contact and the one server I managed to call over excused herself and didn't send a replacement. Finally I had to get up and get the menus myself from the bar. The excellent cocktail was not adequate compensation for the poor experience. read more

Met a client there for lunch. Wonderful atmosphere. Great service. My guest started with oysters and he said they were terrific. He has a soup or bisque for his main meal. It was good. I ordered the romaine Caesar's salad with shrimp the shrimp were awesome. However some of the leaves of the romaine lettuce was partly wilted and rotting. I honestly can't believe they put it on a plate. I would have sent it back but I was with a client and didn't want to make a scene. Unbelievable that anyone in the kitchen would have through that was ok. Otherwise everything was great but I'll never go back. Disappointed to say the least. No excuses. read more

The food is far above what the price point should be, and the staff is inattentive at best and seriously incompetent at worst. Avoid the blood marys -- they are pure horseradish and virtually undrinkable. The best that can be said is the location is unbeatable, the porch is pleasant in the summers and the scene at the bar is friendly. But the food? Quality: enh. Price: stupid high. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday. We had a lovely, romantic night. I got the burger and my boyfriend had the lame. Both were fantastic. Our drinks were strong, but delicious. The ambiance was warm and inviting - the place was crowded, but it didn't seem like it. We got the Lemon-Blueberry Shortcake. It was quite nice. The tang of the lemon and the sweet of the blueberry went very well together. I've also been just to get drinks and have not been disappointed. Their 'restoration' drinks are unique. read more

Pine reminds me of a city-like dining experience. The menu has several really great options (the duck confit was delicious) and the ambiance elegant. While the wood accents around the restaurant offer a warm visual effect, the open space kept the room a bit chilly...dress warmly. read more

Sitting on the front patio with a bloody, eating brunch on the 4th of July, my two kids and wife and thinking back on my time in Hanover as a student 30+ years ago...it doesn't get any better. Pricey, but has high standards of food-not just preparation and presentation but in the quality of ingredients. The build out and overall experience are what you would expect in a major city like Boston or New York, not Hanover! Two thumbs up. read more

We have eaten at this gem of a restaurant three times now and each time we have been delighted with every forkful of food. From the mouth watering buffalo cauliflower, to the delectable grilled octopus and white beans, to the savory wild mushrooms, to the tangy and delicious arugula and baby kale salad, to the raw oysters there was not a disappointing moment! We went there on the recommendation of a couple we met on the streets of Hanover and it is now the only place that we eat when we are in town. Highly recommend this restaurant! The waitstaff are amazing and it has a lovely atmosphere to boot. My only wish is that we could find a restaurant we enjoyed so much in Boston! read more

I traditionally do not care to ever pass along my experience but I figured its something you should be aware of. On Saturday March 4th my wife and I had tickets to a play at the Northerstage and had been waiting for the perfect night to try The Pine. We should have waited. We had made reservations through Opentable and were seated right away when we arrived. Our waiter took 15 minutes to even greet us and when he did he was completely obnoxious and told us he didn't know who was supposed to have our table until he realized it was him. He was flailing his hands around, and to be honest it seemed like he was on drugs. After apologizing for forgetting about us, he explained it must have been the long bender he just returned from and it was his first night back after his vacation. He took our drink order and was off, only to come back a few minutes later as he forgot what we had asked for. The rest of the night seemed to go in that manor. My brother arrived to meet us for dinner and our waiter made a pass at him in a joke kind of way. I was appalled that he thought he could joke around like that with us. The food took about 45 minutes to even get to us and when we were finished we sat for another 20 before our plates were even cleared. Our dinner reservation was for 5:15 and the time we left the restaurant it was almost 7:00pm and we were late for our show. The service was slow, obnoxious and insulting. I couldn't even tell you if the food was good or not because it was all over shadowed by our service. I am so disappointed and upset that I spent my hard earned money and had a terrible experience at what I was told was an upscale establishment. read more

The PIne is located in the Hanover Inn and is "high end' in all respects. Hanover is delightful, and the restaurant continues with the theme of the area. Food was overall very good, with prices on the high side. They did a good job accommodating our large party, in town for a funeral. read more

I've eaten in the Pine several times since it opened, replacing the old Daniel Webster room. The Pine is completely different. The food is actually very good - if you remember the food in the old Webster room forget about it - this is a complete change! The service is excellent, too. The waitstaff is clearly very experienced. Congratulations to the Hanover Inn on the makeover! However, the stately proportions of the old Daniel Webster room are gone forever, as are tablecloths. The Pine is just a tad funky in decor, but the food makes up for it. read more

Ate at Pine just last night and had a wonderful experience. Loved the atmosphere and the food was great! We had the deviled eggs snack, octopus appetizer, scallops and rib eye dinners, and chocolate peanut butter pretzel tart for dessert. We also ordered a couple drinks. Overall everything was great. The only drawback I would say is price. It personally felt a little over priced. I would definitely return, but more for special occasions. read more

The setting and atmosphere at Pine are very pleasant, but the food is unfortunately rather mediocre. For lunch I ordered Gnocchi with kale and mushrooms as an appetizer and a Crispy General Tso's Chicken Sandwich as a main course. The Gnocchi consisted almost entirely of gnocchi drowned in cream sauce with very little in the way of kale or mushrooms. The flavor profile was rather one-dimensional. It doesn't take much work to create a sauce by using excessive amounts of butter, cream, and salt. The General Tso's Chicken was similarly uninspiring. The meat was soggy with fat, offering very little in the way of crispiness or spiciness. read more

I've been here 2 times for brunch - both times were delicious. The last time we had the eggs benedict and spicy kimchi stew with a side order of the sausage. Last time ordered the farro bowl. Everything was delicious. Coffee was good. Service was excellent. The last time the waiter didn't seem to be in the best mood but the service was still good. For breakfast or brunch - the price is definitely worth it. Depending on what you order the prices are comparable to Lou's but better and usually no wait-time. We have also been for dinner which was also excellent but perhaps a bit overpriced. I've been a few times for cocktails and I would say they are the best cocktails in town and the bartender is great. Overall things are a bit pricey but it's Hanover so yeah. read more

For the Hanover area, this is probably as upscale and nice as it gets. Relative to what is available in the area, it's 5 stars but compared to the rest of the country, it's 4 stars. Food was very good but not the hands down best restaurant food I have ever had. Ambiance in the renovated restaurant is beautiful. I just hope that they don't decline in quality just because all the other restaurants in the valley are not so great. Without competition, quality tends to slide. Hopefully Pine wont' suffer from that. read more

Ambiance is great. But, it may be that people are so desperate to experience a superior meal in this town, that they over rate The Pine. The food is not exceptional, nor is the menu all that interesting. My short ribs were dry and that was a bummer as I was looking to it, as were the vegetables on the side. My other three companions said their meal was "good" but not "bravo" ..... Best to go for many fewer, but exceptional choices, which change every few months. read more

This is my favorite restaurant next to school. I spent a lot of good time with friends there. It is good for hanging out with friends and enjoy a glass of wine. It is also perfect to have dinner with friends and parents. The only setback is that they don't take reservations for small events. I tried to host a birthday party there for 16 people but they wouldn't accept the reservation, so we went to Jersey's steak and had a great time. read more

This was me & my wife second time back at pine. Amanda is an excellent waiter, very professional, fast pace , on her P's & Q's. When I return back definitely would ask for her again. I had dinner at the PINE last night. My experience was good. I enjoyed the Buffalo Cauliflower for my appetizer, then had the scallop dish for my entree and finished with the flowerless chocolate torte. The food was excellent, they were even willing to make some substitutions to my meal. My only complaint would have been the service. I would say that it was average. Our server immediately offered the drink menu, but when we said we didn't drink, he didn't offer to get us anything else, just left us with water. Then he was rarely at our table, someone else brought over the food and cleared the plates. We weren't even asked how our meal was until we were almost finished. I had a good enough experience, that I do plan on going back again! read more

I've been here three times since they opened. I agree the service is getting much better this fall we had the Short ribs. which were wonderful, but a bit cold, or the plate was cold. I do enjoy sitting at the bar, the bar tenders seem a little more down to earth and fun. The burger is a must try. read more

I'm back and forth between two and three stars but it's really more like two. When the food is this marginal, it has to be two. As many others note, the atmosphere is what brings people in. The decor is outstanding, very warm yet still modern. It's especially lovely in the winter. I've dined here about a dozen times, mostly for dinner and/or drinks and usually parties of 4-8. The service has *drastically* improved. They've poached many quality servers from other local restaurants (John from Carpenter and Main, Katie & John from Simon Pearce) and I think excellent servers want to work there because the price point for the meals is just SO high for the area (28-37). The cocktails are OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced while being very small (12-14/each). I wouldn't care about the price as much if the food was delicious, but it's not. The fish is always overcooked, the beef is always undercooked, the gnocchi has too much bacon fat in it and they've taken the best item off the menu---the truffle fries. The appetizers are universally better than the entrees and the only 'meal' I recommend is the Hanover Burger. At this point my husband and I know the drill, so if we're looking for a nice place to relax over dinner we land there, order an appetizer, split the burger, split dessert and still manage to spend $100. If you go on a weekend, the bar tends to get backed up so you'll be waiting a while for your cocktails. The best time to visit Pine is when you have other plans for the evening, and you just want a landing spot for an hour beforehand to enjoy drinks and a nibble, which will only set you back $40 (including gratuity). But don't dine here for the evening, they're just not getting it done. read more

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice... We LOVE the Hanover Inn, but I cannot say the same for their restaurant 'Pine'. Pine is just another hotel restaurant - very pretty, but lacking substance. Recently we had our second visit to 'Pine' and while the first was not great, this was pretty awful... My wife and I ordered a few items to share including deviled eggs, calamari, steak tartare and a burger. The first three items were brought out quickly and things were off to a decent start. The deviled eggs had a weird taste and the whites were chewy. The calamari and steak tartare were nicely presented, but the overall combination of flavors on the plate left a lot to be desired and neither was plated as described - missing items, etc. No worries, we were most excited to share a juicy burger BUT sadly this was brought out to the dining room by a food runner and set on a tray stand across the room from us, which we could see and then sat there for several minutes. After more than 2 minutes I started a timer on my phone and patiently waited to see if by chance the burger we could see was for another table. During this time we had a table side visit from the manager on duty, who when after visiting a few other tables saw the burger, read the ticket and brought it to our table - by this time, 5 minutes had passed and the food was being delivered to our table cold... Needless to say, we passed on trying the cold burger, asked for our check and had AMAZING gelato nearby instead. The end. read more

On October 2, 2017 we went for lunch at the Pine restaurant in Hanover Inn. The atmosphere is lovely, but the food is terrible! We ordered two Romaine Caesar Salads with chicken and one pan roasted diver scallops with asparagus fresh fettuccine, heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn. The Romaine Caesar was served in a loaf, and the chicken was dry and tough. The Romaine lettuce in its uncut form was not tasty. The fresh fettuccine was fresh, but there was a half of a scallop cut up with a half of a heirloom tomato swimming in butter and a dot of asparagus. You needed a magnifying glass to see the asparagus. Our waiter disappeared and we did not want to make a scene because of our relative. We hated our meals and would never return. read more

Yes, you will get a good meal here. The specials are somewhat creative. I love that they have valet parking. They make a great burger here as well as a great steak. I have had the fish there as well and it was fresh. There brunch menu is not what I would expect so we go to Jessie's for lunch. If it wasn't for the brunch menu, I would give them five stars. read more

I have been to Pine a number of times since they opened and my experiences have generally been mixed. The first time I went, the food was delicious (got the steak, perfectly cooked, so good!) and the service wasn't great. Our waiter was inattentive. The other times I've been recently for work and I must say, the food and service has been inconsistent. Our party ordered a bunch of appetizers, main entrees, and desserts and all of us noted that the bitter taste for some main entrees and desserts overwhelmed the dishes. For example, I ate fettucine pasta with duck confit and broccoli rabe. Now, I like bitter greens in general but for this dish, the bitter taste overwhelmed the dish so that it was hard to enjoy the duck confit taste. As for dessert, a bunch of ordered this salted caramel with pretzel dish which had cocoa nibs sprinkled on top where again, the bitter taste of the nibs overwhelmed the dish. However, the service was generally good. At my most recent dinner with a party of at least 8 or so of us all ordering appetizers, drinks, main entrees, and desserts, our waiter tossed out my $36 ribeye steak which was less than halfway eaten. I was disappointed. I'll likely come to Pine again but it's more likely that I'll choose to go over to Murphy's if I'm looking for a nice meal in town. read more

A truly miserable dining experience tonight. Meal took more than three hours because waiter disappeared for long stretches, and food came at long and troubling intervals. (Waiter was, at best, indifferent.) And that was the good part: the food itself was somewhere between mediocre and terrible: salmon was dry; oysters tasteless; key lime pie was dry and limeless; creme brulee tough and almost inedible. Coffee was quite good though, but by the time it arrived we were too angry to enjoy it. This place exists because it can, because it has almost a monopoly in Hanover. A disgrace. read more

I reviewed Pine for the first time in May of 2015. I'm very sad to write that things haven't really changed at this restaurant. We have gone back about half a dozen times since my last review. We go back because the food is fantastic. After our last experience this past weekend, I doubt we will return to eat in the main dining room. The front of the house continues to be a major problem. We are treated -- every single time -- with what I would describe as disdain by the host. He barely acknowledges us, does not make eye contact, does not ever converse with us, and acts like he's doing us some kind of favor when showing us to our table. The wait staff hasn't been much better. Given how truly wonderful the food is at Pine, and how lovely the space is, the front of the house/service should be up to the same standards. We've decided that if we wish to go to Pine again, we will sit at the bar. The cocktails are amazing, and the bartenders (we've sat at the bar twice) are not only very skilled, but are also gracious and friendly. The food is great no matter where you sit. Because this pretty much says it all, I'm going to close this review as I did a year ago: "Sadly, it doesn't matter how wonderful the food is if you're made to feel like you aren't good enough to eat there. Pine is the hotel restaurant for the Hanover Inn. Basically, it's a hotel version of a 1980's suburban mall restaurant. It's exactly the kind of place where middle-management used to have its monthly corporate lunch, back in the bad old days! Food is overpriced. Ambience is middle of the road and accessible for most business meetings and elderly relatives. Service ranges from poor to excellent (one guy in particular is very very good). Food quality is low to middling. Last time we ate there, one person had the oysters and said that they weren't very good, and ended up very sick the next day. Your mileage may vary. It's better than Canoe Club, at least. That's about all there is to say. read more

The presentation of food was lovely however the taste was mediocre. A chicken dish was dry and lacked flavor. Our particular waiter was sort of grumpy and not very pleasant but other waiters were interactive and engaging. Overall it is expensive and the experience is not worth the cost. There are many other restaurants in Hanover that I would recommend over The Pine. read more

My husband and I stopped for dinner tonight on our way from Boston to Vermont and loved it! I'm a Dartmouth alum weary of change but this spot is a welcome addition - great on every front: atmosphere, food, and service. We had the octopus appetizer, which we shared (and they kindly split in the kitchen). It was tasty and creative, but the entrees were stellar (halibut and quinoa and veggie dish). We'll be back for sure. read more
