We have been going to pine for about three years. We are native New Yorkers and Pine had always been a nice reminder of a good city restaurant. Not an easy thing to find in the upper valley. However our New Years eve dinner was an exception. The meal went well up to the point when the entrées were served. I was served a fliet minion that was suppose to be medium rare but when it was served. It was the texture of a piece of card board. When I used that analogy to my served she expressed a lack of understanding. How this item left the pass amazes me. The manager and server did try to make things right. However the rest of the guests at my table received their food and needed to eat and enjoy it while it was hot. First the server explained they might not have any more steaks available. They did find one it was served medium rare as I ordered it. The issue was the other people at the table had almost finished by the time my food arrived. The manager did offer deviled eggs while I waited. They were good but did not make up for a ruined service. The dessert was expensive and I had the cheese cake that was nearly tasteless with the exception of to much sour cream. I would not use Pime again for a special occasion. We will search for a new spot. I was also informed of the great skill of the kitchen staff. Also the fact that our server was a former restaurant owner. I was not impressed by either one. read more

But one rainy april, being a weary traveler from Columbia heading to Dartmouth, I needed a beer and burger. I took one lap around the little town up here and once I saw the PINE and The Hanover Inn said, "this will do just fine". In my hungry opine, the prices were fine and the burger, or maybe beer, were finer. Food very tasty- and with those good type of fries that arent really curly, but just curly and crisp enough to leave you trying to fish out the last one from the succulent pool of burger juice. AND, I received a nice visit from the manager, George (attentive and personal), who gave me a little background about the place and how they have recently changed things for the better. Of, course I never saw the place before, but I can say: In Brooklyn, we reclaim old warehouse brick and brass and stick it in restaurants and hotels and it looks really cool. In New Hampshire (at least at PINE), they have done a similar thing- but its done with old barns boards and really nice fixtures. Almost great (3.5 stars) The renovations at the Hanover Inn have accomplished the unthinkable: maintaining the small New England town / College town feel of the old Hanover Inn while bringing in the luxury and modern amenities of large city hotels. A similar trend can be seen in the menu from Pine. Unfortunately, it just falls slightly short. We had Sunday brunch at Pine. The service was excellent. The ambiance was clean, fun, and trendy. The menu offered unique spins on common New England staples. My wife started with delicious home made granola and yogurt with free berries. I started with the goat cheese, arugula, beets, asparagus, and carrot salad. The salad was delicious but I only had two small pieces of golden beet on the whole salad. My wife had the stratta (essentially an open face omelette) with artichokes and parmesan cream. It was supposed to come with a baguette but they forgot. The stratta was delicious nonetheless. I had the Johnnycakes (pancakes) which were slightly different than listed on the menu. These has ginger carmelized pear baked into them and also on top. It was a bit too much pear to be honest. The pear baked into the pancakes was not well cooked and still pretty firm. Overall, the menu needs some work and there is still a bit of polish required to get this to 4 or 5. I still miss the days of the lavish buffet brunch that made the Hanover Inn famous. read more

Hanover is a town full of quaint, homey restaurants with country flair. PINE, in the newly renovated Hanover Inn, in contrast, is a refreshing new offering in the town. PINE is modern and beautifully decorated (could rival top notch restaurants in Boston or New York). Food is delicious and is very fine cuisine, especially in the context of local Upper Valley offerings. Drinks are decent and bartenders are relatively knowledgeable about different cocktails. Notable dishes recently include: - $12/half dozen oysters (from Duxbury, MA) - steamed mussels in spicy tomato sauce (I literally lapped up all the remaining sauce with my spoon, as though I were eating soup). Huge portion - I've never seen so many mussels in an appetizer before - duck entree, cooked perfectly to medium rare I noticed some earlier reviewers mentioned experiencing some operational kinks during their meal. Ours was just fine, everything went smoothly. Our waitress was awesome. She was so attentive and friendly! If you find yourself in Hanover looking for an upscale, modern place to eat, PINE is an excellent choice (and perhaps the only one). read more

Meehh - too expensive for what you get. Nothing is exceptional. Atmosphere is very nice, wait staff is great - food is not as good as you would get at my house - therefore, not worth the price hike. Judged on: * burger - too much rich brioche bun, under seasoned beef & soggy fries. *salmon - over cooked and sides were blaaa (so bad I've blocked them) Again - lovely setting and great staff. This place is pretty awesome. I came here with my brother while staying at The Hanover Inn over the weekend, and I (for the most part) couldn't be happier with both dinners. They start you off with complimentary bread and butter, and, to be honest, I usually find it to be tacky; if I wanted free bread, I'd go to Olive Garden. But, The Pine?....they bring you bread with butter that has been whipped in house from a local farm and sprinkled with maldon sea salt, and, let me tell you: it's not Olive Garden. I licked my butter knife because it was so good. As for the stuff you pay for? Starters: The house made ricotta with truffle honey was fantastic; the truffle was slightly overpowering, but the ricotta was perfectly whipped. The deviled eggs were like any other deviled eggs you'd get at a restaurant, but the bacon bits were a nice addition. The gnocchi with wild mushrooms and truffle was good; it was my brother's favorite dish from the first night, although I thought it was slightly over salted and lacked truffle (maybe I was numb to it from the overpowering truffle from the ricotta). Entrées: The flank steak was good. It was seasoned well, but the star of the plate was the broccolini. My only complaint was that I wish my potatoes were mashed instead of fingerling. Maybe it's the southern girl in me, but I like eating a bite of steak with mashed potatoes. The veal was great. It was light but filling, and I totally recommend it if you want to try something a little different. The short rib with fettuccini was incredibly salty to me and a bit too al dente. BUT, my favorite dish out of all of them was the duck confit. It is actually a top 15 entree I've ever had! I got mine prepared rare, and it was cooked perfectly. The texture from the farro and pistachios paired wonderfully with the parsnip purée. There was savory and sweet, crunchy and smooth. I loved it. It was fantastic. Desserts: the vanilla creme brûlée is a must as is the house made vanilla ice-cream. The dark chocolate and cherry strudel was great, although I'd recommend getting the orange gastrique on the side as its a bit overpowering. All in all, everything was great! My only "complaint" is that they really need to invest in steak knives. It's kind of a joke cutting a flank steak and duck breast with a utensil that's comparable to a butter knife (no joke). Also, as mentioned, some of the dishes are a little salt heavy, but that's just personal preference so who cares? Definitely go. It's worth it! read more

I always come here with my grandmother as a special occasion and it certainly lives up to the hype. The food is always good. While it is pricey, I don't really notice because Grandma pays. Honestly that's the only reason I didn't give it five stars- I feel like a free meal always tastes good and you have less expectations. At some point I'd like to come back and pay for a meal myself (as much as that pains my wallet) as I feel I'd be able to write a more accurate review- when you're paying for something, you are much more particular about the food and therefore pay more attention to the details instead of just following up your reuben with another bloody mary (which are delicious). read more

Really deserves more of a 3.5, but I'll round up because the last meal there was very good. Pine is the restaurant at the Hanover Inn -- basically, the "nice" restaurant in Hanover. I have eaten there twice in the last eight months. First meal was indifferent. Not bad, but not good enough to make me bother to do a Yelp review. The second meal was much better. A roast duck dish was genuinely delicious, and the sides -- some sort of spicy cauliflower thing and a "potato brava" -- were also delicious. Still, it's pretty pricey for what it is (as opposed to what it imagines itself to be). But pickings are slim for "nice" restaurants in Hanover, so I wouldn't recommend Pine so much as tell you to resign yourself to it if you are looking for a nice restaurant. It's fine. read more

The ambiance is rustic-looking, and folks try to look fancy, but there ain't trying to get around the sub-zero weather so there were some lumberjack-looking-types who still showed up for dinner. I was surprised to see less than 4 - 5 star ratings for this dreamy restaurant, until I saw that Stinson's (a local dive market with cheap beer & wine) and Molly's Pub (enormous portions of fried food) were the top rated local locations when searching "restaurants" in Hanover. I haven't had pasta this outstanding since Little Italy, NYC or comparable house-made ricotta since Florence, IT and the raw bar oysters with fresh-grated horseradish that's made to order are beyond top notch and 5-star. I've never tasted gnocchi or duck made so delicately light to the palate. The staff is absolutely fabulous, fun, quick, and knowledgeable. I couldn't have asked for a better 3-day experience than spending it at Hanover Inn and dining at The Pine. read more

Where white table cloth meets tree trunk counter top, the Hanover Inn's PINE is considered the finest dining in downtown Hanover, and is a popular spot for Dartmouth alumni and visiting parents treating their kids. More elegant than Canoe Club (the once reigning Hanover restaurant for fine dining), the ambiance encourages you to dress up for the event. However, there are always a few people in casual (jeans + sneakers) to give you a little leeway--it is New Hampshire after all. The food is top notch. Many herald the rib eye, but I've never tried it since this vegetarian. Instead, I've ordered the kale salad, and cauliflower steak, both of which are very good (the latter of which invoking some culinary creativity). Their drink selection is robust enough, but the drink specials can at times try too hard, only to fall flat. The true downfall of this establishment however, is sadly the service. Almost every time I have been here, I have had to wait for too long to be greeted at the hostess table, acknowledged by the bar tender, or had someone come to take my order. While everyone, is polite and friendly the consistent lack of timeliness has lost this place a star. read more

2016 Update: Lunch/brunch: I usually come for lunch and brunch, as I heard that Pine's a better deal for those two meals. Vegetarian options are still very limited - had the Express lunch with leek and potato soup and gnocchi ($11.50), the vegetarian fried eggs with fries ($15), poached eggs with farro ($15), three egg omelette ($13) and their red onion potatoes ($5). Lunch is probably the better of the two - bfast has limited savory vegetarian foods and portions are tiny. Gnocchi was pillowy and soft, potato and leek soup was creamy w/ complex flavors from the pesto added. I asked for extra fries in lieu of sausage on my fried eggs and found the overall poutine too heavy and too salty. Nothing different from a regular eggs over home fries brunch at Lou's but priced at a premium. Drinks and snacks: Well priced - runs about $10 for a regular cocktail and they're pretty good. Recommend the pisco punch and smoke & flowers. Fries ($6) are tasty and a good deal; nachos with ranch ($5) are ok, but basically Doritos with a ranch dip. Overpriced. Crostini are ok, not great; portion sizes are small. read more

There is simply no better restaurant in Hannover. It is elegant yet casual, the service is good (though I felt it could be friendlier), they honor requests (for instance, we requested a corner table and were given a very nice private table in a beautiful room), and the food is DIVINE. The choices are ample, delicious, and actually very healthy (at least a good number of dishes would fit anyone's South Beach or Keto diet). It is located inside the town's most Posh hotel, centrally located and in the heart of Dartmouth. It is a MUST GO if you are a foodie and someone who enjoys perfectly small yet satisfying portions and a casual elegant atmosphere. So airy. So nice! read more

( how many people like that?) It really should be better than this. My new favorite restaurant in Hanover. The food was exceptional. The portions aren't large, but they were very tasty. Probably the best deviled eggs I've ever had, the calamari appetizer was delicious, the NY sirloin entree was very good, and the banana strudel was delectable. Someone else in my party had the halibut, which was on the bland side (I would probably not recommend this one), but the lamb entree with the ratatouille was even better than the steak. I would also recommend the chocolate & peanut butter bombe for dessert. The drinks were definitely unique. I enjoyed mine (the Accidental City--a bourbon drink). Not everyone will enjoy the tequila drink w/ roasted (I think) agave, although I thought it was tasty. Overall, it was a fabulous dinner. On the pricey side, so I won't be going there often, but I will definitely be back. read more

We came here on New Years Eve and the experience was disappointing. After being seated, we waited for 15-20 minutes with zero service - no water, no introduction from the server, nothing. The restaurant was about a third full when we arrived, so not terribly busy, but the server continued to ignore us while stopping by the few occupied tables in our area. When he finally came to the table, he gave us water and left again, and we waited for another 10 minutes before we were even provided a menu. For a restaurant with these kinds of prices and the fancy ambience, one might expect an apology for the wait or at least a quick greeting explaining that things are busy and they'll be with us shortly, but we didn't get that. That said, the food was okay. The burger was mostly seasoned on the outside instead of seasoned throughout the meat and the crispy onions seemed like they came out of a bag rather than being fried to order. The eggnog panna cotta was delicious, but the pear ginger sorbet was accompanied by two very sad, dry cookies that tasted stale. All in all, service was very poor and the food was okay. Perhaps if we'd had a different server with some basic standard of attentiveness this would have improved the dining experience. We lived in Hanover for many years and after moving away, we were excited about dining at Pine given that it is relatively new compared to the other restaurants in town. We were underwhelmed and will likely not return for a meal. read more

Arrived at this location after a short tour of the campus. First thing I noticed was the stares from other patrons. It appears a latino male is a strange sight here. The server sat us between a pillar and a wall in what could be considered a table for undesirables. We were not asked if we wanted to sit outside. On the contrary our server was very hospitable answered any questions or concerned about the menu. The food was very tasteful. I had the duck and it was my first time eating it. Was very satisfied although the portion left something to be desired. I proceeded to order dessert it tasted ok. A group at another table began to discuss politics and their views, during which they referred to minorities as the "browns and the blacks" this perturbed me as one could imagine. Local gem with a modern bar full of multi-aged hipsters, professionals and beautiful people. Our server was direct and humerous who guided most of our food choices. Appetizers were kimchi deviled eggs and were a tasty twist of spice on an american hors d'oeuvres staple. I was encouraged to try the lamb and glad I did. Perfect! I came here the other night with a friend. We got a cocktail and had their hibachi tartare. It was pretty packed for a week night, even just at the bar which was surprising. Pine has a very nice, sophisticated atmosphere. The drinks were really good, house liquor is good quality, well made drinks with a nice balance. That's hard to find in the upper valley. Bartender was friendly and had the perfect balance of attentiveness. They were accommodating to my gluten free diet as well. The hibachi (yellow tail) was very fresh, nice cut of fish, balanced flavor and a touch of fatty was. It went well with the sauce. The pineapples mixed in were obviously from a can which was disappointing for. $15 appetizer the size of my palm. Other than that it was really good. read more

I was looking for a nice place to take some customers for a great dining experience. Based on the reviews of others and some strong suggestions from my local customers we made the great decision to visit the PINE Restaurant which is located inside the Hanover Inn. While you can valet park with the Inn, there's also street and metered parking which is free after 5 or 6 pm. I met up with a colleague at the bar first to enjoy a delicious and well made martini. Once the rest of my party joined, we were promptly seated. We started with an appetizer of Spicy Kimchi Deviled Eggs. Don't let the word spicy keep you from ordering this. While I'm somewhat immune to "spicy" foods, I found this appetizer to be more "tasty" than spicy. Maybe the word should be "seasoned". My dinner was the Diver Scallops. Large, well cooked, delicious. Our waiter, William, was very attentive. Our dinner was great. We never felt rushed. There were no conversation interruptions. For dessert, we ordered the cheese plate for the table and I finished up with a Limoncello. read more

Pine has gotten much, much better. After not eating here for 6 months, I came back and ended up getting dinner there twice during one week. I had the pine burger one evening and a venison dish which was the special the other time I went. Similar to my first trip, the food was plated beautifully, but this time the taste of the food was excellent as well. The venison was the best I've ever had and its a meat that I really enjoy. I have always loved the atmosphere of Pine and I'm glad that the food is not as good as the bar and ambience of the restaurant have always been. read more

The food is generally fine but the prices are almost gouging for what you receive. $14-17 for a glass of wine? All the entrees around $32-36. Which would be fine if the food was off the charts. I had halibut recently and it was a minnow-like portion with skimpy sides. Like one ground up morel mushroom. More like an appetizer. we brought family in from out of town and made reservation. unfortunately they couldn't get out of their own way to seat us within a 1/2 hour of our reservation and when they did they tried to put us at a very small table. the restaurant and bar were mostly empt at this point. We heard more apologies from bartenders and severs than anything else while we waited. we've been several times before but not again. staffing is difficult everywhere but there's also an expectation at the pines that was not even close to being met. read more

Lindsay our server was so hospitable and friendly - truly a gem! I have to add the that eggs (scrambled with cheese) were the best that I have EVER had! Great ambience in a hotel with personality. The restaurant is great. The menu is excellent and the wine list, though over priced, has diverse choice. We started with the octopus special that was very tasty. For our entree, we ordered the cumin rubbed venison ($32). The special was exquisite, with exotic flavors. The wine we chose was Yolupa from Australia ($40) The service was fabulous. The bill, with appetizer, 2 entries and wine came to $135, not including tip. We got a meal to go kit (fried chicken). On the website it says that the meal kit is packaged cold and comes with reheating instructions, but there was nothing included with our order. We tried to call the restaurant to get the instructions but it goes straight to voicemail. My boyfriend ended up having to drive back to the restaurant to get the instructions, was given a sheet that didn't have the chicken instructions on it so he had to wait in line again. The staff were not very empathetic, they said they were phasing out the to go kits and that our order shouldn't have even gone through the system. We paid $45 for some fried chicken and mashed potatoes; it would have been nice to get the instructions included without having to drive an extra half our to figure out how to reheat our meal. read more

Disappointing. Went for lunch and experienced absolutely abysmal service and lackluster food. Dining companion and I wanted to try one of the entree specials, but it was already sold out by 1pm. Waiter took 30 minutes to get water, another 30 minutes to get order, which he then messed up. Received salad without added chicken, and a very disappointing lamb sandwich. Very nice restaurant with a very rustic charm. I had the duck which was very good and I'm a bit picky about duck. My wife had the diver scallops which she also liked. I honestly thought that this place would be stuffy and and pretentious, but it wasn't at all, in fact i felt very at home and relaxed. The drinks were very good as was the desert. This seems to be THE place to go when visiting the area, and for good reason! Our group of four started with the buffalo cauliflower and General Tso's octopus. Both were enjoyed by all - especially the octopus! For dinner I had the roasted carrot salad. For me, the most memorable part of the meal was the incredibly moist chocolate beet cake! I highly recommend visiting PINE when you are in the area, but be prepared to wait a bit for your table and service, as it is a very popular place. read more
