Because I know about this little hidden gem already, I was driving home after a long day and I wasn't going to pass it without stopping. This is what I'd call emotional support pizza. Not a pilgrimage. Not a revelation. Just a really solid pie from a place that knows what it's doing and doesn't need to make a fuss about it. Pepperoni and black olive for me today. The crust had that chew you want, cooked through, some golden brown color on the bottom. The sauce was rich tomato with garlic running underneath the cheese, present enough to know it's there without fighting for attention. The olives were generous and distributed like someone thought about where they landed, not just dropped from a height. The pepperoni is cupped and charred slightly at the edges. The toppings-to-cheese ratio was right. It arrived fast and it arrived hot. This is what a revered neighborhood pizza place is supposed to be. Maria's does it. It's primarily takeout, four tables, busy foot traffic in and out the whole time I was there. They do good business and they know what their business is. I sat down anyway because I tend to be an iconoclast, and it was a fine visit. If you live nearby, you already know about this place. If you don't, that's between you and your neighborhood. The staff was very courteous and the whole ordering/paying process was as it should be - easy! I took it home and it had just cooled enought to eat it. This is the type of pizza I love. A thinker crust, loaded with mozzarella, and a nice sauce that was not overwhelming. The sausage had a nice spice to it. (For the record, I am not a fan on New Haven style pizza, which seems to be popular in RI - this is not that. Nor is it New York style - which I do like BUT not over the style that Maria's serves.) Italian countryside murals on the walls. The staff greets you like they're happy you showed up, which is rarer than it should be. The cheese pizza is where this place reveals itself. Same Papa Gino's geometry: thin, sturdy, dependable. But elevated with ingredients that actually taste fantastic. The cheese blend brings provolone into the conversation, adding sharp, tangy notes that cut through the richness. Everything works. The crust has that holds its crispness on top, great chew in the middle, and just enough cornmeal texture underneath to remind you this thing came from a real oven. The pepperoni, though. It overwhelms. Too much salt, too much grease, too much of everything. It doesn't play well with others. It storms onto the plate and dominates, drowning out all those subtle cheese notes that made the plain slice sing. Stick with the cheese. Let the fundamentals do their work. What Pizzeria Romana understands, what Papa Gino's always understood, ipizza doesn't need to reinvent itself to be good. It needs good ingredients, technique, and the restraint not to screw it up with unnecessary flourishes. After shopping, I met up with the ladies and they had all finished around the same time so we decided to grab something to eat. PieZoni's was just two doors down from the nail shop. At this moment, none of us were particular about what we wanted to eat, we just needed something that was good and quick, since none of us had eaten earlier and it was already approaching 2pm. Personally, I had never heard of PieZoni's Pizza, however, I'm well familiar with "PIZZA," and that's pretty much all of us needed to see/know. Okay, we walk in, we place our orders. The ladies are discussing their recent nail and pampering visit...I'm entertaining them (politely), hearing them out, and patiently waiting for my food. Three of them placed orders, and the other two decided to share the other orders. This is what was ordered: (1) Cuban Pizza- Honey mustard, sweet plantains, ham, red onions & Canadian bacon, (2) Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza- Bacon, Hamburger, pepperoni & extra cheese, (3) Steak Tip Salad- Marinated top-grade sirloin steak tips served on a Caesar salad (Dressing on the side). For my meal choice, I decided to be consistent with my choices (made two years ago). I've been keeping a promise to myself to have something green every day, even if that meant pizza. I saw that they had a special PieZoni's Calzone that included Spinach. It was pretty much the same as the Mediterranean Calzone-Oil & garlic, olives, tomatoes, spinach & feta cheese...I forgot the name of it but mine also included two meats (Pepperoni and Beef). My Calzone was loaded with spinach which made it extra delicious. At first bite, the ladies were very impressed with the size, and taste of their pizza. According to them, the meat was cooked just right (well done) and the crust was not too thick and not too thin, and it also included a slight crunch, and finally, the temperature was perfect because they had just pulled it out of the oven. For me, my first bite was just as amazing! I have had Calzones before, but never like this. The top of the Calzone was all cheese, yet the insides were well covered so that it gave the appearance of a complete calzone. It was simply delicious! So much that I could do a commercial and sell this item. The restaurant was clean, and the customer service was friendly and accommodating, especially, when one of the pizza orders came out with regular bacon, instead of Canadian bacon. They switched it without any problem and suggested that we keep the mistake as well. I was happy to help them eat that pizza too! Overall experience, great! Highly recommend trying this pizza place. I hope they make their way to the DMV soon because I would enjoy trying them again. Oh, and the wedding took place the next day and it was a successful service for my cousin. Out here you're competing with strip malls, chain restaurants, and parking lots. Nobody accidentally ends up here. You have to give people a reason to hit the turn signal, pull in, and stay awhile. Jacob Kamborian wasn't interested in building just another pizza shop. So he built a room. Not a pizza shop with a couple of televisions bolted to the wall. A real room. The stage isn't tucked into a corner. It's the centerpiece. Microphones are already set. The drum kit is waiting. Across the room, a long wooden bar stretches almost the entire length of the space, wrapped in old wine and liquor crates that look like they were collected over years instead of ordered from a catalog. Guitars hang on the walls. Music posters fill the gaps. An American flag watches over the dining room. Warm lighting softens the reclaimed wood and the whole place feels comfortable the moment you walk in. It doesn't feel designed. It feels lived in. Come for pizza. Stay for the night. That's a big gamble. When you ask people to spend three hours in your restaurant instead of thirty minutes, the food has to back up that invitation. We ordered two very different pizzas: an 18-inch Brooklyn round, half pepperoni, and a personal Sicilian with extra sauce. The Sicilian got my attention immediately. Before I took a second bite, I flipped the slice over. The bottom told me everything I needed to know. Evenly browned. Crisp from edge to edge. No pale spots. No soft center. No collapse.
