I met up with a friend here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. Small cafe style with small tables for 2 and 4 with a variety of pastries, coffees, smoothies and teas. There is also wines available. No crowd or line and beautiful weather so we decided to eat outside. I ordered a breakfast plate that included eggs, potatoes and toast with a mimosa. I have been coming here for years. The Asian chicken salad has always been a big favorite. I ordered it today and it was different and instead of the normal shredded chicken, it had been replaced with strangely cut and grilled chicken. The website that day even had a photo of the shredded chicken and they were also selling sides of shredded chicken. I asked about it and the person working said "we don't do that anymore" I mentioned that they were selling it on their website and the guy working rudely said "we changed it today." Hands down the best place for a hearty turkey chili in the area. It is filled with vegetables and comes with bread for dipping. I always tell myself I will try another menu item but I always come back for the chili. There's a lot of seating inside and outside the cafe. There is free wifi. Lemon chicken orzo soup w bread: The most delicious lemon chicken orzo soup. The soup was seasoned perfectly and hit the spot!The bread was sooooooooooo good! I believe it was a rustic white but it kind of reminded me of sourdough? Incredible. 5/5 Banana brulee latte sub matcha half sweet: This was interesting. It kind of ended up tasting like dried apricots. There are some toffee notes in the banana syrup so maybe that's why. Lavender matcha: Absolutely phenomenal! It pairs incredibly well with the pastry and isn't too sweet despite me not making any adjustments! So good hot so make sure to finish it quickly or the matcha might settle on the bottom and the foam will get cold! 5/5 Apple crumble danish: The best pastry I've had in a while! And it was heated up so perfectly! A lot of cafes don't warm up their pastries enough but it was perfectly toasty and crisp! The layers were so light and crisp and the sweet filling was divine with small apple bits on the top and crumbles at the top. It is definitely on the sweet side but honestly it's so well done that I don't mind. Pairing this with a less sweet drink is key! Came here after a Sunday lagree class, and we decided to order a breakfast burrito. The cashier was great, but the burrito took a while to come out ~ about a 15-20 minute wait. They were pretty busy for a Sunday morning, so it was understandable. I'd rate the burrito a 7/10. It was filling, but I mostly tasted the potatoes, so I didn't get as much of the other flavors as I was hoping for. I'd still come back to try other menu items though. Came here because of a promotion and was surprised at how fresh and delicious the food was. It was crowded and you order yourself at the cashier, get a number, and get your own table. I tried their vegan sandwich and it was so delicious and the bread was springy and fresh. I will say if you save the sandwich it probably would get soggy because of so many fresh moist ingredients in it. I also tried the lavender matcha latte, iced. They have oat or almond milk and I saw in their fridge its barista milk edition. Also I was told a baseline their match is "ceremonial grade" from Uji. I will say the matcha latte was one of my favorites. Overall really great. This was super filling and I loved the candied nuts that added a nice texture to the whole salad. They have several tables outside along the side street, so it was easy to just park our bikes by our table. That was nice, so we don't have to worry about locking them up. I made the mistake of ordering a glass a wine because it took them at least twenty minutes to bring that. We were almost done eating by the time it arrived. The red wine was also bad and warm. I was handed a menu by a courteous gentleman behind the counter. After a few pregnant moments, I ordered a Marketplace Panino, Lentil Soup, Deli Scoop Salad with Tuna and House Chardonnay. Today, I ordered the same Asian Crunch salad at this location and it's small, had 3 pieces of chicken, half a cup of sad lettuce and the other 70% of the salad was wonton chips. It felt like i was eating a bowl of chips with a sprinkle of chicken and lettuce. The dressing tasted like oil with a hint of citrus. For a $20 salad, I expected something better. It was our first time here and I got the breakfast burrito, I got my husband the roast beef sandwich, hot chocolate and I got the de leche tea latte ( or something like that ). Now I understand prices when it comes to food these days BUT paid $57 for my meal which is insane. It took about 30 minutes for everything to come but we didn't mind it at all. My visit to San Marino Cafe & Marketplace was a letdown. The overpriced & underwhelming sandwich, the tasteless soup, and the deceptive menu left me feeling unsatisfied and disappointed. Food Presentation: The sandwich was served wrapped up in paper, no plates. The soup came in a paper cup with a plastic spoon. The overall sandwich and soup combo came out to be a whopping $31, and was very underwhelming. Service: The only service is when they drop off your food wrapped in paper to your table and that's it. They don't check in or say anything. $21 Sandwich: They advertised their Marketplace Panini as "Top 100 in California!" But it tasted just average and was overpriced, like a baguette sandwich you can get at Panera bread but 2x more expensive. In addition, the menu board advertised all their sandwiches served with a house salad by default. However, once you pay $4 extra to add a soup, they take away the salad and replace it with a mild lentil soup. That's considered a substitution, not an addition as the menu states. Overall, the San Marino Café is Located in a pleasant and pretty neighborhood. Food wise, their sandwich and soup are not worth the high prices. read more
