Union Bakery is one of those long standing family owned businesses that really makes a neighborhood great. They make the only quiche that doesn't make me feel heavy. Theirs is fluffy, light and the combo (half sandwich or quiche plus a salad/soup of the day) is a really good deal. My wife loves those little pies, the kids love the cookies, and staff will tell you what is in season. I also appreciate that KUSC Classical California is the background music of choice here. I lost count of the number of times I've gotten out of my car and walked into Union to hear exactly what I was listening to on the way over. Coffee is good too. read more

I've driven past this unassuming bakery hundreds of times over the years. On a whim, I decided to finally pop in and check it out. It seemed quaint like most of the shops in South Pasadena. Everything here looked good. Both the apricot tart and oatmeal cookie were very legit. The individual size apple pie also tasted great albeit it could've been filled a bit more. The croissants unfortunately were a bit disappointing. They lacked the crunchiness on the outside and the well defined airy layers on n the inside. Overall all a decent bakery. This place is fantastic. Let me start by describing the neighborhood. There is parking. There is seating inside and out. It's location is really convenient. Now, to the good stuff...the FOOD. I ordered what I thought would be a turkey sandwich. It was not A turkey sandwich; it was The turkey sandwich. It was the perfect ratio of ingredients to bread. Oh, the bread, soft interior with a perfectly crunchy crust, as in you cannot wait to just eat the crust. The turkey was really really good quality. From the outside and inside this looks like a very basic local bakery but the prices are those of an artisan Parisian establishment. I bought 7 basic pasties (danish, plain croissant, turnover) and paid over $50. I have bakers in my family and I know how much it costs to make baked goods even with premium ingredients. I've wanted to try Union Bakery for a long time. I drive by it every day and the smell is always amazing, like fresh baked goodness drifting into the street. It gives the impression of a charming, small, mom and pop bakery that's all about quality and community. Unfortunately, I felt a bit misled once I actually went in and tried the pastries. I ordered an apple turnover and an apricot tart, and the total came to around $19. That's roughly $9.50 per pastry, which felt excessive. Worse, the flavor didn't justify the price. The apricot tart was very mediocre. I thought it was supposed to have a marzipan or custard filling, but if it did, I couldn't really taste it. It was airy but lacked depth or richness in flavor. The apple turnover had good, fresh apples inside. the filling was actually the best part, but the crust was disappointing. It wasn't flaky or buttery like a turnover should be. Instead, it was a bit mushy, like it was underbaked or just not well executed. In the end, the pastries looked nice and smelled great, but the taste and texture didn't deliver. Stopped quickly before their closing time on Wednesday. I got their sourdough and asked to be sliced. It has a great sourdough flavor and nutty taste. The rustic loaf is handmade and baked perfectly(not burnt). I enjoy thick slices because I like chewy texture. Driven by this bakery a few times and decided I would give a try last week. I bought the larger lemon blueberry muffin and a brownie. It was actually like a chocolate lava cake of some sorts. The muffin was delicious it had such a good burst of flavor. Loved it. The chocolate was good too, but the lemon blueberry was better and I preferred more. I would not have discovered this hidden gem of a bakery if not for the amazing review penned by my good friend Nikki B. So thank you Nikki for introducing me to this adorable neighborhood bakery! Union Bakery is small but they have an array of pastries and breads on display. I ordered a few different baked goods and was happy with my choices overall. Like my friend Nikki mentioned, the scones here are exceptional. The scone was filled with fresh cranberries and dusted with sugar on top. It had the perfect consistency, and wasn't too dry or heavy. As good as it was though, my favorite item was the strawberry cream cheese pastry, which was absolutely scrumptious warmed up. The cookie was pretty good too, and I enjoyed the raspberry compote filling. I wasn't much of a fan of their bread pudding though, as I felt it was too eggy and soggy. Overall, I enjoyed most of the treats I purchased that day. The baked goods here are a little pricey, understandably, due to the natural and high quality ingredients they use. Union Bakery is a small family-owned café that was established in 2002. Wally (husband) takes care of the day-to-day operations, and Joon (wife) does all the baking. (She's a certified pastry chef.) I've had their lemon bars and cookies before at a friend's house a few years ago. I remember they were very tasty, so I decided to stop by and pick up a treat for my hairdresser on my way to my appointment. When I walked in I was greeted by the delicious smell of fresh baked goods. It was delightful. Wally was having a friendly conversation with some regulars, and Joon was bringing warm croissants straight out of the oven into the display case. I selected a Blueberry Muffin ($4) for Stephanie and a cranberry scone ($4) for myself. Stephanie loved the muffin. It was packed with fresh Blueberries. She said it was, "So good!" The scone was exceptionally good. It had the consistency of a biscuit and contained fresh cranberries and a light sugar coating on top that provided a hint of sweetness. It was delicious warmed up with some butter. I loved it! The place is small with limited seating. Everything is baked with natural ingredients, so the prices are slightly higher. I'm spotted Union Bakery when I was driving my wife to work. I went in to check out what they baked. The place is quaint with two showcases. One was filled with all their baked goodies. As always, when I see a croissant, I have to try it. The croissant costed $4.00. Not bad. It's on the small size. I like my croissant crunchy on the outside, chewy with lots of layers on the inside and just the right amount of buttery taste. Union Bakery falls short of that. Not crunchy, not a lot of layers on the inside. It was chewy with a hint of the buttery taste. That's not to judge them on the other baked goods. They may be very good. Therefore, I'm going to be generous and give them the following: DJ's rating; 3.50/5.00 Would I come back? Yes, to try other baked goods. PS. My husband was raving about this bakery, I personally thought it was little pricy. $4.50 for a tiny cookie. He convinced me so we treat ourselves on weekends. Today, we were in hurry, just picked up one cookie came home and super disappointed what we saw in the bag . They gave us all messed up cookie. As you can see bottom of the cookie is missing. It's definitely a neighborhood place, so if you're a regular her husband Wally, who frequently is handling the front counter, will be much friendlier and chattier than if you're someone he doesn't know (like me). My favorite items here have been their croissants and delicious blueberry muffins, which are chock full of berries. They also bake a good sourdough bread and apple pie, too.
