Love Tartine! I've lived in Pasadena for over 10 years and have tried pretty much all the well-known croissant spots around Pasadena and LA. This place has always been in my top five. Their croissants are consistently so good. They're not overly greasy, the layers are light and flaky, and everything always tastes fresh. Their other pastries are great too, and the quality of their bread is excellent. I honestly don't understand why this place only has a 3.5 rating. Maybe it's because of the limited outdoor seating? I usually just grab my bread and pastries to go, so that's never really bothered me. The quality has always been consistently good every time I've been here. I've looked forward to trying Tartine for well over a decade, but unfortunately, our visit to the Pasadena location was a bit disappointing. I won't completely write Tartine off based on one visit, especially since both the loaves and their famous morning buns were sold out by the time we arrived. The pastries we did try were overly sweet for our taste, and having just visited Artisanal Goods by CAR, we felt CAR's pastries were on another level. The sandwiches, however, were good--really good--and easily one of the highlights of our visit. But the "side" they came with... And then there were the carrots. Each sandwich came accompanied by one. Singular. Pickled. Painfully skinny. Carrot. Dramatically sprawled across the tray as though it had been carefully selected for the sacrifice. I'm still not entirely sure whether it was a side dish or a garnish that had lost its way. Surprisingly, they were actually very good pickled carrots, but I'll never forget the presentation. At least give me a couple if they're going to be that small--or perhaps one with a little more girth. Words fail me. The biggest disappointment was the country bread with cultured butter and jam. Since they didn't have any loaves left to take home, I specifically ordered the bread untoasted, as I was really excited to finally taste Tartine's famous country loaf--which I've baked over and over again at home using Chad Robertson's book. Instead, the slices arrived griddled and already saturated with butter, with more served on the side. For me, it completely overwhelmed what should have been the star of the plate: that delicate, beautifully made bread. I simply wanted to taste the slices on their own and let the cultured butter and excellent seasonal jam--which was fantastic--complement it. All in all, it was a frustrating first visit, especially after looking forward to Tartine for so many years. I came here because I was really craving sourdough and honestly couldn't find many places in the San Gabriel Valley area that offered freshly baked sourdough so I was really happy when I stumbled upon this one. I had heard of this bakery because they also have several locations throughout SoCal and the Bay Area and have heard good things about it. This location is located in Pasadena and I couldn't find parking so I parked a few streets away. When I got to the front of the bakery, I saw that there was plenty of seating outside of the bakery and none inside when I went inside the bakery. I saw that there were breads drinks, and pastries available for sale. Since I only wanted sourdough bread that was the only thing I bought, but I was happy that they offered a full loaf and a half loaf. The cashier was really nice and I was in and out of the store within five minutes. I will definitely check out this bakery again to continue buying sourdough bread from here because it was actually really good and I am curious to try their pastries and drinks next time the sourdough bread is baked fresh daily, and the inside of the bread was really soft. read more

Overall, my lunchtime experience here was lovely. The sun was shining and I was greeted by a dozen little birds chirping from up in the five-story high trees. To sit inside or outside? However, I had no problem finding a table, and I got to watch the to-go slash grab & go line move with speedy service while I slowly deliberated over my order. ** SOMETHING SAVORY ** I eyeballed the AVOCADO TARTINE. The description of cashew salsa, nutritional yeast, and cilantro sounded healthy. And the Smoked SALMON TARTINE with dill and pickled red onion looked good too. Then the bakery case caught my eye. Oooh, I could have my savory and my sweet too. So I went for a classic French bakery item: PAN AU JAMON. It was very flavorful, rich with cheese, and the ham had a hint of smokiness. It was a bit greasier than I had expected and I'm pretty sure it was like a gajillion calories, but I tried not to think about it. ** SOMETHING SWEET ** I sampled the ALMOND-LEMON TEA CAKE. It was a bit saturated in butter, but had a nice tartness to it. My sweet tooth got a major sugar rush. Perhaps a bit too sweet for my taste. Lemon Cream Tart or Banana Cream Tart? I deliberated over that for a while and ultimately chose to bring home a BANANA CREAM TART. The chocolate shavings and fresh bananas made me go ape nuts. Even the tart shell was delish. They have a super tasty Ham & Cheese Croissant here! And the lattes are very good too. I went back a month later, walking 2 miles from work at lunch and they were already out for the day. What is it with pastry shops always being out of Ham & Cheese and Turkey & Cheese croissants by noon. Isn't it a great lunch option? Don't people order them enough? After researching, I found a way to order La Conviette butter, with which my girlfriend and I fell in love when we went to Paris last year. I was so excited when it finally came, but then I realized that I didn't know where I could get a baguette that would match it in quality. I didn't want to wait until my farmers market day so I did some research. I came across the website for Tartine and, after reading about their bread, I had to try it. Just in case it wasn't as tasty as we hoped it would be, we decided to try the vegetarian quiche as well. We had it delivered so I can't speak to the ambiance of the restaurant, but wow! The flavor! I was transported back to the café in Paris we'd go to every morning to start our day. Tartine's baguette smelled so good it made the roof of my mouth tingle. The crust was perfectly crunchy and the bread was so flavorful--tangy, a tiny bit salty (just the right amount to naturally complement the butter). The quiche was lovely: fresh, flavorful, and beautiful. A slice isn't inexpensive; however, it is huge, so it was more like two slices and that made it a good deal. It doesn't just complement the tart--it competes for best element on the plate. Soft, fluffy, and luxurious. They only give you a dollop, which makes sense--it's gold--but I wouldn't complain if the whole tart came covered in it. The edible flowers are a classy touch too. We've been wanting to try this place for a while because we are in search of all of the good sourdough breads in the city. Tartine is one of the flagships. We ended up getting half a loaf of their country bread, an egg sando, toast with butter & jam, an almond croissant, a ham and cheese croissant, an oatmilk latte, and a black tea. This is not a lot of food....and it cost over $70. Many have said on here that they are expensive and the service is kind of blah. Can confirm on all of this. The egg sando is on a brioche bun with the equivalent of maybe an egg and a half, with some sprinkling of arugula, and this was $16. The croissants were good. The bread itself, though, was surprisingly disappointing. Good open crumbs in the bread, but it felt like they overtoasted it, and it came out more crostini than toast. They also put butter on it, and gave us MORE butter and some jam, and that was $9. For basically toast and jam. Croissants were around $7, and drinks were $5-7. So, this adds up. The eggs in the egg sando was nice and pillowy and good. Pretty small though. The toast was ok. The croissants were very good. We dug into the half loaf for dinner, and it was honestly...just ok. Not as complex in flavor as I would have expected from such a prominent bakery, and it lacked a textual balance between the crust carmelization and the soft interior (it felt harsh all the way through in both texture and flavor). Have been here a few times now hoping it would magically be better. This place is a solid 3. Wish I loved it more because it's close to home. Really hate the trend of only offering one cup size of coffee and charging premium prices for it. 12oz and 12oz only. Also find the baked goods very oily and the staff aloof and too preoccupied to be friendly. Coffee is decent, but there are loads of better options in Pasadena. Good location, too, but chuck a stone and you're at another Old Town cafe. Would get coffee there if I was in a pinch, but pass on the baked goods. read more

I've visited tartine in San Francisco often so I was looking to kill time in Pasadena and saw this Tartine. The devil's food cake was so delicious when I got it in SF but here I wish they heated the cake slightly. The chocolate frosting in the layers was really rigid. I've had it heated when I would get it in SF and I swear it's the BEST chocolate cake I've ever had. Also, this location only has outdoor seating and the tables/chairs aren't the tidiest. There were little fruit flies flying around when I was seated outside and it even landed on my slice of cake :( I wouldn't come back to this location unfortunately. I'll check out the other locations around LA county and see if they are a better fit. read more

Tartine in Santa Monica has been a great favorite forever. So imagine my delight when I found Tartine here in Pasadena on Green St. They have a slightly different menu than SM but I already have favorite items, especially the baguette sandwich and their quiche. The hours will encourage you to get an early start, open at 7 am. And the prices still make me gasp: $9 for half a loaf of their fantastic marble rye. But you will not be sorry you came. Sit outside before the heat of the day. Bring a friend for a glass of wine and late lunch (they close at 3). Egg salad can be iffy in my opinion if you like it a certain way, but theirs is great and has a little spice kick to it. The pickled carrot that comes with it is a perfect addition. I have only visited once as of now, but from this experience overall, I'd rate it a 3.5 stars. A co-worker recommended it, which is just over the 710 freeway bridge pass. Traversing outside the familiar confines of Old Town Pasadena felt like traveling into uncharted territory not gonna liehaha! I'd never heard of Tartine before and thought it was a quaint cafe. It was not, and unfortunately it did not leave me impressed. Thier desserts look mpressive, but I think thier sandwiches and desserts are much too over priced. I had one of the reasonable items on the menu: an egg salad sandwhich for about 12$ including tip and tax. For the area, it's not a bad price! One of my other co workers got a avocado sourdough- and it was one avocado toast on sourdough bread, with some alphalfa sprouts on top- for more than I'd ever be willing to spend on a sandwhich. It did not fill her up and so some of us shared our sandwiches. My egg salad sandwhich was pretty good, but heavy on the herbs and spices, that it was hard to taste the egg. There is also water and water glasses outside, which I appreciate on a hot day. Thier coffees come in a pretty small cup, but I heard it was decent. There is no indoor seating but a dozen spots to sit on up front outside of the entrance. Met a few friends here on a Sunday morning for brunch. We placed our order inside and sat outside under the shade of the big tree. It's nice and cool at this time of day, perfect for hanging out with friends. I ordered the pressed ham and Gruyère sandwich, while my friends chose the egg sandwich, the pressed spiced turkey sandwich, and a couple of pastries to share. I loved my ham and Gruyère sandwich and give it a 5 out of 5 stars. My friends all enjoyed their food as well. As for the pastries, the sweet scone and the lemon poppyseed tea cake really stood out--definitely worth ordering again. The regular croissant and the chocolate croissant were fine, but nothing you can't get elsewhere. Overall, we all enjoyed this place. I guess you could say that I've become a regular at Tartine, a place that has great staff, high-quality food, the best atmosphere, and a good clientele. The bread and pastries are super fresh, coffee is always perfect and the vibes are immaculate. It's one of the closest places you'll find to give you that European cafe feeling you're craving, there are so many bakeries/cafes that miss the mark in some way or another (for example, good food/bad coffee, good coffee/horrible atmosphere) This place has it all, highly recommend. read more

Tartine's coffee used to be my favorite until they changed the beans and ended up diluting the taste of espresso. Unfortunately, I will have to find a new place for better coffee now and maybe find a different place altogether. read more

This TARTINE location in Pasadena is located to the west of the truncated 100 Freeway, on the other side of bustling Old Town Pasadena. The vibe is certainly more relaxed and the free two-hour parking on the street certainly helps. There was no line to get in and no line to order. Shelves of their awesome bread are available. But once again, I got sidelined and got their Lemon Tart and their Seasonal Hand Pie, which happened to be apricot in October. Ugh... these pies are flawless as always. The crystal sugars coating ALL sides of the hand pie... the flaky flaky goodness... the apricot filling is awesome. The crust on their tarts are solid and holds up the filling very well... while still crumbles butterfully. The CORTADO is creamy and chocolatey. Sigh.... I'm ever so thankful Tartine decided to move south. read more

Happy overall to have a Tartine in my neck of the woods. I can still remember the original SF location and what an experience it was during its peak heyday. The line snaking on the street. Eyeing the tall slices of cakes in the case. Getting excited by being next to order. Squeezing into a tiny table with a friend or two. This is def a different version of what I remember circa early 2000's. I'm nostalgic for the charm, but glad the quality of goods remains high. A fan of the breakfast sandwich (the pillowy egg is just right), egg salad sandwich, and the pre-sliced country loaf gets me through the week for breakfast or a midday snack. The missing 5th star is for the location. I appreciate that it's tucked away from the hubbub of Old Town Pasadena, but do wish there was indoor seating. I finally ventured forward to try them and I was ASTOUNDED!!! It was thick and heavily flaky and crispy because I was told only after asking that it's baked twice. It's too bad they don't have vegan croissants altho they do in Paris! When one is a great baker, you would think they would rise to the occasion and make the HEALTHIEST croissant, which is the vegan croissant. At least I will age more slowly eating vegan. So this has got to be the best almond croissant in the WHOLE OF PASADENA.. and yes, I know, it will be busier after this posting. And it's a little over 7.00 whilst the plain bagel is around 5.50! - but once in a while it's okay. I think the almond may rival anything in Paris, but Paris is actually CHEAPER compared to these insane prices. The butter croissant is nothing to write home about.
