Okay, this new coffee/pastry bar that opened in Pasadena where Mandarin coffee stand is - pretty legit. Was in the area and wanted to grab a drink. Luckily this place is open fairly late. Even in the afternoon, there was still a good selection of pastries. Prices are a little high, but I know that a lot of time and effort go into making canelés. Opted for just the drinks - honestly, everything I ordered was really good! I got the cloud matcha $8, matcha latte with cream top at 50% sweetness. This was perfect and I could get additional sweetness from the cream top. Also got the cloud caramel latte (also $8) which is has espresso, homemade caramel syrup, and cream top. Wow, the caramel really shone through while I still got a lot of the espresso taste. Even drinking this several days later, it was really good! They also have a cookie butter or biscoff coffee drink that was also really tasty! I think this was $7 or something. The cream, biscoff cookie crumbles, and the espresso - all tasted really good together! Would definitely order this again. There's no tables inside, more of a grab and go but there are a few tables outside. Free 90 min parking in the lot. Only slight complaint is the higher price of the drinks. $8 is quite high although all the drinks were really tasty. Not sure if I'd come back purposely to get a drink but if I was in the area, I definitely wouldn't mind getting another coffee from Bu!
I visited Bu Pastry Bar for the first time on Saturday, 5/2 and had a good experience. The shop is located in the corner of this little shopping area on S Lake Ave so you can't miss it. The store is small inside and they have a sign on the door stating to limit to 5 customers inside since it is a smaller area. They sell baked goods in the front and some merch by the back near the door. I ordered a Matcha Latte $7 (not including tax) Price as of May 2026. The drink was pretty small, but tasty. The matcha wasn't grainy or astringent but I was sad that I didn't ask what type of matcha they used. It was a good drink but I just thought was a little overpriced and wasn't too wowed. Limited seating area outside only. No indoor seating unless the store is super empty and there is a few seats (with no tables) available. Customer Service: Decent, nothing to complain about. They were nice. All in all, again I wasn't too wowed by the place. I'd be willing to come back to try another drink if I was in the area but I may choose another shop for matcha instead.
Got the three flavors of canele available. Pistachio was best out of the original and matcha yuzu. Texture was a little too burnt on the matcha in my opinion. Interior for all was custardy soft and enjoyable.
Came during their grand opening (or soft grand opening weekend) when they where having a BOGO deal on their drinks. However cashier told me it was not grand opening until the next day. So i ordered my drink (black sesame latte with oat milk) and the canelé. Got back to my car and checked the instagram post which says BOGO started the day i was there. I returned to the store to show the cashier. he was nice about it and apologized and made my free drink. Also gave a free madeleine to make up for the whole mishap. They put a card with reheat instructions into the bag. Sesame Latte: Well made. the ingredients tasted homemade. it was good and well made. But i would prefer to get my drinks at mandarin just two doors down. Canele (black sesame): I had the black sesame without reheating it and i thought it tasted ok. I've had canelé before and the experience prior (Dominique Ansel and Archives of Us in LA) was more exciting for lack of a better term The canele has a good texture but some edges were a bit burnt. Canales should have a nice caramelization vs. being burnt. Canelé (plain/original): decided i would heat it up per the instructions. This was a game changer and made the 3 star experience to a 4 star. When warmed up the outside gets that thin crispiness like the top of a creme brulee but thinner and the inside is a bit reminiscent of mochi. to sum it up, it was like eating a mochi with a sugary crisp outside. Hopefully the store offers to make warm up the canelés so people can enjoy it immediately after purchasing. It says it can also be eaten cold but apparently room temperature is not the best way to enjoy this. Next time i would try it warmed and dipped into a hot latte! The free madeleine i got was really good. My only other experience with madeleine is mass produced packaged ones from Costco. This was extremely well made. simple in flavor but a very nice cakey soft texture yet somehow substantial. it was this perfect in between of airy and dense. i think i prefer the madeleine more than the canele. it was a very nice treat and while its small it was actually the perfect size for a treat. If i was in the area i would stop by for a unique treat since you cant get these everywhere. Its also a nice change from standard pastries if having a get together like a tea party.
the review is for the Madeleines and caneles. I found the madeleines to have a really great texture and natural sweetness-- almost like sweet cornbread. all the different flavors shine in their own respect and are definitely worth trying. I never tried a canele before but I didnt find the texture that pleasant-- it tasted like stale mochi and the burnt caramel on the outside was too bitter for my liking. however, I will not take points off for that because it's probably a me-problem. I'm only giving 4 stars because I do think the price is a little high for each Madeleine ($4-6 each)
Came here for a Coffee date with my husband There's tons of parking! We saw the like for mandarin coffee stand and wanted to look at the other chops and happily stumbled upon Bu! No line! Beautiful interior with seating in the windows. The huge windows made it feel like we were sitting in a little cafe in Europe The staff was kind and helpful. They had sooo many canelé flavors to choose from! The matcha was creamy, umami notes, it was just delicious. My husband got the cookie butter late from their season creations menu. It was so good!! Rich and creamy! Such a cute spot, definitely coming back!!
Bu Pastry is a cute little cafe located at the Lake end of Burlington Arcade. I feel like I've been sleeping under a rock because I used to work a quarter mile away and don't remember this little outdoor mall lol. I haven't had many caneles, only notable one was from a random cafe in Tokyo, so I wanted to try the freshly baked caneles here! I got one of every available flavor for both the madeleines and the caneles and I prefer the caneles significantly more. While some of the madeleines are okay (butter & salt, lemon lavender), the others were not the best and on the dry side (chocolate, injeolmi). The caneles are crispy and crunchy on the outside while soft and fluffy on the inside, very tasty. My favorite was the ube taro because ube is baked into the canele itself, while the black sesame only had cream on top. Sadly, the party right in front of us bought the last matcha yuzu and the flavor switched to a caramel almond, which I liked way more than expected. A surprise favorite was the raspberry financier that was more flavorful and less dry than the madeleines. Also grabbed a cookie butter latte (seasonal) and a hojicha cloud, both were nice. There's plenty of parking in the giant lot on Mentor behind the shops. Would def return for drinks and caneles!
Really cute shop in Pasadena off of Lake Ave, You can see it off of Lake Ave. Been hearing about this spot for awhile and I figured I was eating in the area and it was literally walking distance and we decided to walk over and see what they have available. I saw a little line, maybe about 10 people but 3 different groups. They will have someone let you know when you can enter and they try not crowd the inside due to the shop being a little small and want to be able to accommodate everyone in a comfortable setting. We were only able to try the madelines, they had two flavors, triple chocolate and a lemon lavender. We went ahead and got 2 of each and they were moist and really yummy. The chocolate was soft and you can taste the chocolate and it's NOT too much, even though it said triple chocolate. The lemon lavender has both flavors in it and there was a lemon filling which reminded me of a lemon bar and if you are a citrus fan then you will enjoy this one. Service was great, the gentleman helping us was SO SO nice and patience even though he was asked the same questions multiple times and questioning why certain things were out of stock and how soon they will have and what flavors. Really good job at handling them I will be back to try their canele. Looks yummy and a fun treat to try.
After getting off of work on a Friday evening, my coworkers and I wanted to try out a new coffee and matcha spot with some pastries, and I'm so glad I found this spot in Pasadena! There's plenty of free parking, and it's such a nice spot to hang out, whether you want to sit or walk around and yap away with your friends while sipping on your tasty drinks and enjoying some sweets. We enjoyed everything we ordered, and the service was quick and friendly too! The only downside was that the drinks and pastries were a bit on the pricey side. Other than that, we had a great time and would come back again to try more!
I stopped by BU Pastry Bar and ordered a latte and the Matcha Yuzu dessert. Unfortunately, the dessert wasn't quite what I expected, especially for the price. The top was very hard, while the inside was overly soft and seemed a little underbaked. The latte was nice, but overall the dessert was a bit disappointing.
Ingeolmi Madeleine: The soybean taste is immediate because of the powder. It has a small mochi on it, which was good. Because of the powder, it tastes a little dry. It is a dense and yummy madeleine. I personally like the lavender lemon one the most! 7/10 Lavender lemon madeleine: Good amount of lemon! The flavor was good. Not too sweet in my opinion. My friend said it was too sweet.. but she likes drinks at 50% sweetness... so take that with a grain of salt. You can't taste the lavender but you can smell it. Good, but would be better if you drink tea with it. You kind of get thirsty after eating one. It was soft and yummy. Very pretty too! 8.5/10 Matcha yuzu canele: The inside was soft and a very moist. The outside was dry and hard - which is how it is supposed to be... but I am beginning to think I am not fond of that texture. The flavor was good, with a stronger matcha flavor and hint of yuzu. The matcha wasn't overpowering and the yuzu has a subtle bright flavor- it wasnt tart or sour but you can tell it was yuzu. It was definitely one of the better caneles I have had. 8/10 The server was nice! They have a cute uniform. Small shop, but all the shops there are small. Its cozy and cute :)
Bu Pastry Bar is a gem of a spot located right in the Burlington Arcade. There is a parking lot here with a good amount of spots. Inside, they have a limited amount of seating but there are additional tables for seating outside. Wifey and I ended up trying the Earl Grey Canele, Brown Butter Madeline, and the Guava Blossom Sparkling Drink. Everything that we had was amazing and all of the staff here at very friendly and welcoming.
Bu Pastry is a cute new option in the Burlington Arcade, in the cutest little gardenscape area. It's actually right by some Tesla Superchargers, so a great option if you are charging nearby. I popped in on a Thursday early afternoon and they had a few vanilla caneles left, plus a few different flavors of Madelines. I was going to order a Vanilla Canele ($4.80) and 2 flavored Madelines ($4.50 each) but ended up getting 4 items (another Madeline) for $18 as they told me that saves me money. Not sure that math maths...but I can appreciate an upseller lol The Madelines were great (triple chocolate was my personal fav but all were just a dash too dry) and the canele was out of this world delish! Bu Pastry Bar also has some great drink options. I went with the Cloud Matcha ($8.50) as my drink with subbed oat milk, and absolutely loved it. I would definitely get this drink again but look forward to trying some of the other drinks next time I'm in. I will absolutely be back to try more of their Caneles flavors. I'll try going earlier next time so they aren't all sold out!
A yummy accidental discovery. We were at the shopping area on a Sunday afternoon and found this bakery. The bakery is spacious with a few seating by the window. Everything looked so delicious! We chose the Creme brûlée, the guava madeline and the Earl Grey canele. I think the Earl Grey was my favorite but everything was delicious. They also have coffee and teas. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. They did say that they usually run out of their pastries by the afternoon so might be best to come earlier. Would highly recommend and would definitely go back to try their other pastries. read more

cute little store that feels homey! i love their branding and setup. the worker was very welcoming and kindly took our order. we got the Mango Matcha which is seasonal (i think), Vanilla Canele, Matcha Yuzu Canele, and Fig & Cheese Financier. the Mango Matcha was perfect, fresh sweet mango purée paired high quality matcha. none of the flavors overpowered each other, it was well balance. the Vanilla Canele was ok, it was our first time having this pastry and it tasted quite burnt? i know the outside is supposed to be crispy and caramelized but it made the whole thing taste burnt and it wasn't that soft or custardy on the inside. maybe we got a bad batch and it got a little overcooked. on the other hand the Matcha Yuzu Canele was excellent, the Yuzu wasn't overkill and the matcha flavor was pleasant. Crispy outside that wasn't too burnt and the inside was still custardy soft, the perfect texture. also never had a Financier and the Fig & Cheese one was lovely. great flavor and texture, i thought it would be like a madeleine but it's a little chewier. overall love this place and would come again! better matcha drinks than their neighbors read more
3.4 stars I only got 1 drink, so this review is for the Black Sesame Latte ($7.50). The coffee is quite mild/light in flavor, which makes for a good afternoon coffee. I could taste the black sesame and the salt cream top, which are all quite tasty. The drink itself is very well-balanced, but at $7.50 for a small cup, I can't say it's worth it. The cashier was nice and friendly. Free parking is available in the back. I'll likely be back to try their pastries in the future. read more

Cute little pastry and coffee spot in Pasadena. I was looking for a coffee spot and what pulled me in was the house made Carmel latte. In addition to coffee, they had two types of Madelines. If I came earlier, looks like there was a selection of caneles too. My latte was delicious! I could taste the quality ingredients too. read more
Newest pastry shop in Pasadena with friendly services!! Bu was unique..from the menu to the way they bake their pastries =] I only tried their Madelines & coffee during my visit. I loved their biscoff Madeline. It was fresh and yummy. The cream added a nice touch to it. Texture was great. It was the right amount of moisture. They might have perfected this simple snack. The triple chocolate was ok. Not a fan. It was a bit dry. I did left it in my car for a while so not sure if that was the reason for the dryness. The coffee was pretty good. A lot of places could make good pastry, but not drinks. The staff recommend the vanilla cloud latte. It wasn't overly creamy or sweet =] However, I prob wouldn't order it again. It was an additional $1 for vanilla. The drink came out to $8 something for a pretty small cup. Not worth it, imo. I would like to return to try their earl grey canele. I don't see it often so I am curious. They do make the pastries on site. I could literally see the staffs prepping and making it in front. When I got there around 2pm, they had a sign saying out of canele and to return in 2 hrs...kinda confusing. Not sure when it was posted, but I m sure there will be no canele when they closed @4pm. Conveniently located in the Burlington Arcade of Pasadena which means plenty of parking in the shared lot behind the establishment. The shop itself is small, modern, minimally cute. Apparently the name "Bu" is the owner's dog's name lol very cute. Here's what I got: Original madeline - buttery, lightly sweet, airy texture. Very satisfying. Original canele - prob my favorite. Crispy caramelized outer shell with a bouncy soft center. Lavender canele - consistent crispy caramelized shell with fragrant lavender cream inside and on top. They said it was an "Easter special". Matcha canele - you taste the matcha but I don't prefer this representation of matcha or canele. I like them separately. read more

What an experience! First off, the ambiance and location is perfect. This bakery is so cute and I loved how many flavors they had. There's a few indoor seating and several outdoor seating. The staff here are funny and the best, I had a great time browsing their selections. When you're here, do order the caneles, especially matcha yuzu and black sesame. It's simply delicious. I tried their hojicha cream pastry and it literally melted in my mouth. I loved the Madeline's as well, it was hard to choose just a few flavors... so pro-tip: get all of them. This bakery is an absolute yes! The pastries are packed with flavor, and the crème brûlée pastry was easily my favorite rich, creamy, and totally worth trying. The portions are on the smaller side, but the quality and taste more than make up for it. The service is pretty straightforward: you order, they hand you your items, and that's about it. Stopped in to try their specialty, canelés. They were just replenishing their stock when I came in the afternoon. Their Earl grey is my favorite since I love tea flavors followed by their matcha with yuzu--they gild the lily with a little spurt of yuzu cream that adds just a touch of acidity. The Madeline's were gorgeous, just your typical sponge that's on the drier side. I would definitely come back for the canelés. Getting it for to-go and it might be a great call coming on weekday avoiding the rush hour. Still bit of wait but not bad at all. The spot was one of my favorite alley in town as it let me reminiscing the good old days spent in London, where they had very similar alley! Besides it carried nice cafes and such cozy space to just sit and people-watch. Getting both their madeleines and caneles despite they're unfortunately out of the biscoff one. The madeleines were just so so to me and tad dry for my liking. The caneles deserved the shoutout though particularly the earl grey one, serving solid tea flavor with buttery base. Reheating it prior to eating, it got the crispy outside yet chewy inside texture that I was really fond of. read more

Saw this place on Tiktok and definitely wanted to try! Located in the Burlington Arcade, closer to Lake Ave, a few stores up from Mandarin. Rating: 4.5/5! We got a quad box: 1 Biscoff Madeleine 1 Matcha Canele 1 Black Sesame Canele 1 Earl Grey Canele 2 drinks: Matcha Latte and Hojicha Latte $35 (if I remember correctly) for everything above I actually really love their Hojicha. It's nutty, lightly sweetened, and it has a taste that I just couldnt describe. I'd definitely go back for that. Matcha is strong (in a good way) so it's definitely quality matcha. Madeleine was good. First bite, couldnt really tell if there was biscoff but the more you eat, the better it gets. Not too sweet either! Caneles were good as well. I believe they are a week into their soft opening, so they are probably still working on their timing with prepping the goodies before opening. I came here this morning, right when they opened at 10 AM, with the goal of buying some dacquoises. A little disappointed that no dacquoises were displayed yet. Staff mentioned it was still cooling down in the back. I ordered Biscoff madeleines and they were good! Not sure how many different flavors they have in total since there were some empty trays out, but this morning they had Biscoff and double chocolate. The Biscoff madeleine has a cream filling, a nice glaze, and a cake-like texture; overall, yummy! Also got the black sesame canele which has a black sesame cream filling, somewhat firm mochi-like texture, and a nice crust; overall, yummy! Aside from the pastries, I got a matcha latte with whole milk and agave as a sweetener. I personally prefer my matcha stronger, but if you enjoy a matcha that's more earthy and mild then this is the place for you. I would rate their matcha latte a 6/10 for me. I hope the next time I come around that some dacquioses will be out on display since this isn't something a lot of cafes sell right now. read more

I stopped by recently and got to try quite a few items: the cookie butter madeleine, vanilla canelé, matcha red bean dacquoise, hojicha dacquoise, cloud matcha, and guava blossom sparkler. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience and the staff were amazing! My personal favorites were the hojicha dacquoise and the cookie butter madeleine. The hojicha dacquoise was a standout with its unique blend of Asian and French flavors. It had a nutty sweetness with a soft, delicate exterior and a creamy hojicha filling that balanced the textures beautifully. The cookie butter bits on the outside of the madeleine added a subtle sweetness and a nice textural contrast to the soft, buttery cake. For drinks, I ordered the cloud matcha without added sweetener and really loved it. The cream topping had a slight hint of saltiness that balanced the richness of the cream and the earthy matcha really well. The guava blossom sparkler was bright and refreshing with a noticeable real guava flavor--perfect for a hot day and caffeine free! Next time I might ask for it a little less sweet, but it was still very enjoyable. Overall, I loved the experience. Shout out to the staff, Eunice in particular, who gave great recommendations! I was glad to see a bakery open at the Burlington Arcade after two of the cafes closed this year. I went on a random weekday afternoon, so it wasn't busy at all. I tried the yuzu matcha canele, passion fruit guava madeleine, salt + butter madeleine, and the matcha + red bean dacquoise. I've tried caneles made by a veteran patisserie and I don't think I prefer the texture of caneles... they've got a hard caramelized outside and an almost pudding like inside. It's like two opposite ends of a cooking spectrum in one pastry! While I can't comment on how well made the caneles were, I can say the flavor of the yuzu matcha was underwhelming, and almost bitter. In fact, the flavor of both madeleines were also underwhelming. The flavor and scent of passion fruit and guava are very recognizable, but the madeleine's flavor was merely a suggestion of some tart fruit. Similarly, I love the taste of salted butter on bread or chips. That madeleine merely suggested at saltiness and butteriness. My favorite was the matcha + red bean dacquoise. I had never heard of a dacquoise before but it's simply a shortbread sandwich cookie. The flavor again, wasn't too strong, but I can always enjoy a soft buttery cookie with a creamy/paste like filling. Overall, I wouldn't really recommend this place for your average cafe lover. The selection is limited but specialized. The pastries were beautifully made and presented, but the strength of the flavors were lacking to my personal tastes. read more
Came here on a Saturday after pilates because I had a nearby appointment and wanted a little treat beforehand. It was about 12:00 PM when I came by which is a little late for me to have coffee so I opted for the Guava Sparkling drink. This is a cute little bakery located in a very cute center that's filled with businesses. The bakery itself is small inside so there was a line outside and a max of 5 customers in the store at a time. The wait outside was about 10 mins before the barista instructed us to go inside and order. The place was nice and clean and the menu was fairly simple. The employees were kind. I wished I was able to try their coffee but maybe if I go back at a earlier time haha. The sparkling drink was quite refreshing and tasty. Sweets wise, I ordered the black sesame canele, lavender and lemon madeliene, and hojicha chocolate pastry. The sweets were.. okay to be honest. The canele tasted a bit burnt, madeliene could've used more lavender and the hojicha choclate pastry was eh. Not too sure what the hype is with the pastries but maybe I just ordered the wrong items. I'd definitely come back and try the coffee but sweets wise.. not so much. Parking is in the back and the lot is plentiful. read more

A new favorite go-to for pastry gifting. I've been here several times this year specifically to pick up their 4-pastry boxes. I've handed many out at work events and to friends and family, and the feedback has been great. Had the pleasure of clearing out their display on my first visit. A business associate of mine, whose father was a pastry chef for nearly 20 years, received a box and praised both the taste and quality. That kind of endorsement also means something. The setting also adds to the experience. The plaza itself in gives a nice London alley feel with the architecture and window styling that makes the visit feel great. read more

My friend and I had a coffee and pastry here while waiting for an appointment we scheduled in this really cute Pasadena Shopping plaza. BU Pastry had a line out the door but that did not deter me from ordering from this cafe. The line moved fairly quickly, and we had our drinks and pastries in hand shortly after. My friend ordered the Cookie Butter Latte; she shared the drink was creamy, sweet, but not too sweet, with a strong coffee and very present biscoff flavor. She said their cookie crumble on top of the cookie added the perfect amount of crunch. Right now, I am currently taking a break from caffeine so I ordered the Cloud Hojicha (they do not offer decaf at this place, just as a heads up). I was very pleased with my order as the Hojicha was very earthy, not very sweet (as I ordered it) and the flavor of the Hojicha was very strong but not overpowering. Pictured below, I ordered their freshly made Madeleine Lavender Lemon. The lemon curd was refreshing, sweet, and lemony but not sour. I personally love Fresh pastries and I can say that they probably have the best caneles and madeleines I have ever had in LA. They offer not many but enough varieties to choose from. My friend and I arrived at 10am and we both bought a 4-piece box set. I definitely recommend buying a box set and coming early so you can try out most flavor. My favourite items are matcha and earl grey caneles as well as passion fruit guava and biscoff madeleines. I really like that they are not making the pastries too sweet, and they offer a balance taste. I also like the texture that the caramelized exterior made the pastries crispy, while tender and soft inside. Really love this small business filled with cute, simple and warm ambiance. Such a cute top up in the arcade alley in Pasadena. This was my first time having canele; I am absolutely in love with the fusion flavors, you don't see black, sesame, and lavender being used all the time. I got to enjoy this baked good for a couple of days. The drink selection was fair, I prefer the Matcha latte here more than the place next-door. The weight was not too bad, so if you're in a rush, definitely give this pastry bar a visit. Everything is picked fresh every morning, and the service is pretty good. We had a mid-morning case of the rumblies and stopped in for our first visit to Bu Pastry Bar. We decided to try a few of the options available and ordered a Matcha Yuzu, a Brown Sugar Biscoff, and a Salt and Butter Madeleine. The madeleine was baked well and had a nice flavor. The match yuzu was delightful and nicely citrusy. We really enjoyed this selection. The brown sugar biscoff was sweet and very satisfying. New bakery alert in Pasadena! BU bakery located in the Burlington arcade off Lake specializes in French pastries, specifically madeleines, canales and dacoquiose. The madeleines are buttery - we really enjoyed the passion guava one. The canales have a crunchy outside with a soft flavorful center. And we tried a dacoquiose for the first time and loved the soft cookie and black sesame filling. The cloud drinks were delicious. There are tables outside to enjoy your treats, their team is super friendly and they have a choose any 4 box for $18 which is perfect to try all the pastries.
