I've bought a Wii, xbox one and 2ds from here and each time I've gotten a great deal and every item I've bought has been in perfect condition (like new!). They have wonderful staff that answer all my questions about games and the consoles. They have a wonderful selection of games that changes enough to keep bringing me back for more! Their arcade games are amazing and fun for everyone. Every time I go I imiditally feel welcomed walking through the door. The staff are so amazing and even during christmas season the employees took the time to help me find the perfect games for me to give as gifts. Exceptional store in an unassuming location. Thank God they were in business. Had a little tike visiting me...who had just received a beautiful gift....a retro portable play station. The kid had been playing his 1 and only game for a whole month...and the game wasn't in English. WTF We try game stop...the only game store I knew about. Thank God they referred me to Phoenix Games!! Even though they comment was stated in a way kid might have thought his system wasn't good enough. We arrived at Phoenix Games...and it felt like Mecca!! Exceptional customer service. ..the nice, knowledgeable man came and personally showed us where the right games were located. Then got his extra saint hood card by helping my little charge find the age appropriate ones I would purchase. This was a task as he needed games/ movies that were rated E for everyone. He even had recommendations that were very much appreciated & helpful. We left with 2 new games & a movie. This was the best day for the tyke...& for me. Phoenix Games ripped me off!!! Little to my knowledge at the time, I had a rare PS1 game that I had brought in with a handful of other PS1 games. They gave me no more than a few bucks (literally like $11) for like 6 games. A few days later I came across an article talking about rare PS1 games and sure enough one of my games was on that list. Upon further research I found out that this particular game goes for upwards of $200!! I got swindled and feel very disrespected by Phoenix Games, and I definitely won't be returning to shop OR sell there! Any reputable business that deals in purchasing from customers should be upfront and honest about things like PROPER PRICING. Fuck you Phoenix Games you practice shitty business ethics and have no more morals. Just shows you're out to make a quick buck and don't care about your customers. My advice to anyone who would potentially be selling video games is that you should research what you have before selling, and also DON'T GO TO PHOENIX GAMES! read more

The staff is pretty knowledgeable about the gaming industry and enjoys chatting with the customers. They always have Pinball machines! This store is what it is and that is a retro game store. I hate when people say "I see this cheaper online." Well then buy it online. They do their best to keep up with the trending prices so be happy that u have direct access if u find what ur looking for at the time of your visit. TALK NERDY TO ME !! So here it is: I'm a pretty big gamer. Video games are my thing. My grandpa was a designer of the first color game to ever be played on the Apple II (yes, back when floppy disk games were cool). I can remember playing Lode Runner and Pick'A'Dilly'Pear on my old, boxy Apple. Then some years later came a computer upgrade and games like DnD and Duke Nukem and Doom. If you looked at me now, you probably wouldn't guess my husband and I are ranked globally on angry birds. Yes, #22 rank in the world :) (is that bad?) We didn't have an Atari console when I was little but I remember playing pit fall at my best friend Julie's house in junior high. I did have every Nintendo system though. My sister and I were naturally very good at video games and fairly competitive with one another. Straight "A" grades on our report cards meant mom couldn't complain if we wanted to play Fester's Quest after our homework, or solve the mysteries of the Uninvited. I do remember hating N64. It was 007 that did it - I was a terrible player of FPS games. I'm only moderately better now when I attempt to play COD on PS3. I'm lucky my husband tolerates me on his virtual team. The Raiders only seem to get wins when I'm playing Madden, but I'm not big on sports games anymore, unless it's on Kinect and I'm actually exercising. So when my NES stopped working a year ago, I found Phoenix Games. The repair was simple, and relatively inexpensive. The employee that saved my system knew exactly what the problem was and had us wait in the shop while he worked. Heck yes!! What an amazing place to walk around. They have soooo many games. For all consoles. And we have all of them. They have new games for my Kinect and used games for my SNES and even controllers for my Atari (Christmas gift last year!!!) All of their prices are reasonable and they don't try to push sales on you, but will explain the benefits of products such as rechargable batteries. (Wii remotes especially benefit from these!!) In the back of their store they have a couple gaming chairs hooked up to screens, and some pinball machines. Sometimes we stop in here just to play pinball. We usually leave with a new game. The employees are super nice. They're your typical video game store looking guys. I mean that in the best way. Just super cool, friendly, knowledgable dudes. I'd highly recommend stopping in here if you're looking for something obscure (they have consoles I've never heard of) or if you know someone that would enjoy a gift certificate from this place. My sons scratched their Need for Speed disc to the point of not working anymore, so I brought it to Phoenix to see if they could fix it. When I called, Phil answered the phone and was very pleasant. We arrived and I really liked the layout of the store. It was like going to a gamer friend's garage, but far neater and more organized. They looked at the disc and were very honest in telling me that they might be able to fix it but the scratches were pretty deep. We gave it a try and I got to look around the store while he tried two separate times to fix the disc with their industrial disc fixer-thing. Even though the disc ended up not being fixable (although it looked almost new at the end), the two guys working there spent about 45 minutes of their time trying to make it work for a total bill of $4. Overall, they were friendly, helpful, and seemed like very decent people. I would go there again to support their business... and maybe to try out their pinball machines as well. read more

Phoenix Games is my personal favorite video game store. I have been coming here when I was a young kid, I remember the release of Melee for the gamecube and needing extra controllers to play with my cousins so i came here probably back in the early 2000s. Now i come here as an adult to add to my hobby of collecting retro games. However, the more i come here the less it looks like a storefront and more it becomes about the people and the environment of awesome games (so many good ones at that). Very engaging staff and store. There are classic arcade games, like pinball, available to play. The nostalgia is strong. They also offer resurfacing services and I believe repair services as well. My personal favorite part was the amount of space dedicated to classic Nintendo games. When they learned I was a classic Nintendo collector they offered to give me a call when anything unusual for N64 came through the store. And much to my surprise they actually followed through a few weeks later when they had an orange N64 available. I came here to look for some retro games for someone since I was in the area, and I must say, they have a wide selection. Was really only looking at the super Nintendo, ps1, and dreamcast games; and I was surprised at what they had. Although there wasn't much dreamcast games (which most stores don't), there were plenty of games for the PlayStation. Prices were decent, considering I've seen some stores sell for way over original retail price. Overall, good experience. The store was clean and well organized, and the staff was friendly. Hard-core cool store. They are the BEST game store in the bay area combined. I love that they have games for pretty much every console, I felt like I was my child-self in a video games store. Young me would have been thrilled! They have video games for every console from: GBC, N64, Atari, Nintendo, PS1, PS2, GBA, and more. I even saw a copy of "conkers bad fur day", which my brother had been looking for forever. I only wish I had bought it when I saw it, I haven't been back to check since, but I'm planning to make a stop up there soon to check out if they've gotten any new merch. Like many others, I got lucky and stumbled upon this wonderful gem of a store. In a location I would have never thought to look or visit, I am thankful they came up in my search. I had recently dug out all my retro consoles and was looking to add to my collection. I didn't want to go to Gamestop, they are far too over priced. This is where Phoenix Games comes in. Upon arriving at the store, it doesn't give off that usual dusty basement feel that so many nostalgia/retro type stores do. This one was clean, organized, and the staff very friendly, making you feel like they are approachable. The store is not overwhelmingly huge, but large enough that I could spend about an hour there going through their inventory to see what catches my eye. They have every thing for all your favorite childhood consoles, all the way up to the newest generation. It is all easily laid out so you can browse without issue. Prices for the most part are more than fair, there have been one or two rare occasions that I have found better pricing online. Otherwise, they are often better priced then what I find online, and I know I can trust what I am getting. In addition to selling, they also buy, I recently turned in some stuff for store credit that I no longer had a use for, or had duplicates and they were upfront and honest about the value. I also over heard them telling another customer what their trade in value would be like via phone, and where their best option to look would be, if they wanted an even higher trade in value. Aside from the store part though, there is also a really cool arcade in the back that you can play at. If you love gaming, and are looking to add to your collection, I highly suggest checking them out. My only complaint is that they are too far away from me! read more

Drove a good distance to get here solely based on all the good reviews. It's a very nice store with a wide selection of retro games and systems. If you're looking for a particular item I suggest calling in first and making sure they have it stock. the retro stuff fly's off the shelves these days. I'm giving it four stars because I purchased a defective Genesis Model 2 from them. When they took it off the shelf they informed me that it had some white paint spilled on it. they also said "Don't worry the system was tested and it works perfectly". The white paint was fine because I knew a little nail polish would take that right off. But when I went home to play it, it wouldn't power on. I also noticed the ac power adapter had a hard time fitting into the back of the unit. after wiggling the cord it would turn on briefly as long as something was pushing it down. With a little research I found out that all it needed was some solder on the connector. The Genesis Model 2 has a known issue with this. Which is a easy fix for me but for someone with no soldering experience finding this out would be frustrating. Was this System actually test? How hard would it be to put a post it note on it so you can inform the customer of the issue? Other than that, the people working there were very friendly. I'm really glad these type of stores are around. Anything to avoid the toxic reproduction gamble on Ebay is awesome. read more

You ever wish you could walk into a store and buy Retro games instead of just latest consoles only? Now you can, the staff was cool and the games were at a great price, yeah some games that go for more cost more as you'd expect but for other games such as Wii, Gameboy, and DS tittles it doesn't cost you your soul just to get a copy of a game unlike at some other stores you can buy 2-3 games for over $150 and here you can find the same games for about $50-$60 so there is a Huge difference, they have a lot to pick from and its just a good experience to have even my gf liked it and she's not into video games like that so clearly they did something right read more

The pinball machines are impressive and fun if you like that kinda thing. The modern games for gaming consoles like Xbox and Playstation are ridiculously overpriced and this place seldom takes used consoles or games. I went into this store today with a friend looking for the new Katamari game for the PS3, which they did not have. What they DO have however is a TON of games for all the old school gaming systems (NES, SNES, Sega, N64) which I still own! They have all these glass display cases and each one houses a different systems games. They have the largest collection of NES and SNES games I have ever seen in a single game shop and the prices were decent too! They have tons of used consoles and every accessory you could want, even a power glove for the NES. Definitely my new favorite video game shop! read more

Being a gamer and growing up with both the old school systems and the "new school" ones, I can honestly say "Yay! I'm a fan". Normally I go to GameStop to get my daily dose of games, however Phoenix games is one of those places that gives a refreshing change to the everyday GameStop. It's true - the store does not contain as many games as one would find at a GameStop, however what it lacks in quantity it makes up in sheer uniqueness. There is no other video game store, that I know of, where you can see original unopened copies of classic games such as Final Fantasy VII and Wild Arms or game systems such as Playstation and Sega Dreamcast. Sure - to some these may sound like "junk systems" or "old games", however to an avid gamer who has, literally, grown up with the progression of gaming systems it brings back a form of nostalgia that can only be satisfied when coming to this store. On top of the vast amounts of "old school" games and systems, the owner strategically placed 3 (or 4?) flat screen TVs paired with gaming chairs in the back of the store so you can play whatever game you want. Of course it comes with a small fee, however it's always fun to come into a store and see people playing the latest game of Halo or Modern Warfare. It adds life to the shop - and for you pinball and arcade masters - there are also a handful of pinball and old school arcades in the back of the store. In all honesty, as much as I love GameStop, I would say that Phoenix Games represents the future of gaming shops. As old games go out of commission and new games take their spots, it's actually really nice to see that there is still one place (or maybe a few places) that still have the classics in their original shape and form. Also, the ability to just sit in the shop and play a few rounds with friends is always a plus! And even if you aren't interested in buying anything from the shop, just taking a step into it is a very unique experience in itself that will not disappoint. Let me preface this with the goods about Phoenix Games: Love the pinball machines, always has a large selection of games, and I'm glad they moved a little closer to my house. Now for the bad. Went there to see if I could get a price on a few games I wanted to sell, the door says they open at 10am, by 10:10, no one in sight, doors still locked up and lights off. Gonna chalk it up to maybe the person opening had some car issues or something, but it's the second time this has happened to me when I get there early. One of the workers actually called my bf yesterday telling him about a game that just came in. I like how they really take care of their customers. We told them that we came from SF to FF & then Concord just to see them and they made sure to check of all of the games that we were buying to see if they all were working. They also have machines in the store to buff out any scratches on any of the game disks. How awesome is that?! In the back of the store they have games connected & some gamer chairs to play if you want to. There are a bunch of pinball machines too. The owner was telling us about the tournaments that they have here. I think that's pretty cool! Little disappointed as I called about selling an old Xbox 360 console. When I get down there I am told they won't buy it because it's not a slim model. This is a retro game store in the style like Gamestop but, with pinball machines and arcades in the back. For a nerd like me, it doesn't get any better. They sell NES, SNES, Master System, Gameboy, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, and frickin' any games, game consoles, or game accessories you can remember. They buy retro game used stuff for cash or for store credit. I've sold some NES controllers, some Playstation stuff, among other things to them on occasion. Oh yeah, they even clean CDs and games discs for a small fee. The staff is very friendly, and knowledgeable. And sometimes they might stock very very rare games which you can't find easily in any Goodwill or Craiglist posting. I heard they even have competitions on their tvs. Now what i don't like about Phoenix Games, is the prices they charge on those rarer, more valued games. Since they know so well about their games, they know they can charge a lot for something like "Conker's Bad Fur Day," or "Final Fantasy VII." For example, Conker is (from what i remember) $50, and that is just too much for normal people, and for how old the game is. That's cheap for Ebay, but not for me. The overall prices for games are like a dollar or two more than what they should be priced at IMO. A small pet peeve is there is almost always some kids playing COD on the tvs they have setup in the back. Doing the stereotypical cussing over Xbox Live junk. But whatever. I came here once wanting some Dreamcast stuff, and an Atari all-in-one system. They had the DC stuff i wanted, but they didn't have the Atari unfortunately. Although they were kind enough to take my number down and call me when they had them in stock. I think that's nice customer service right there. I really appreciate the organization and neatness of everything. Also, I do appreciate seeing the pricing on each game. I was up in San Francisco for one day, and I could only visit Phoenix Games for about 10 minutes, and I have never cried more about not having enough time to stay at a store. I looked through for about 10 minutes, and picked up a couple things, but I could've easily picked up more. On top of which, I was disappointed that they didn't have any more of the rare games that which I was looking for like Strider 2 or Skies of Arcadia. That being said, this was one of the best stores I have ever been to. I mean a boxed Sega Dreamcast for $65? I didn't even have a chance to ask for the boxed Virtual Boy, which I should've gotten. They have a great stock, their prices are extremely fair and are in favor of the customer, the service there is very hospitable, and they have a Play-Choice 10. That alone is enough of a reason to stop by and say hello. Honestly, I have no complaints. Other than the fact they were out of stock of the rarer titles, which not only is that expected as their prices are great, but if you're local and don't live 400 miles away, odds are they will have those rarer titles in stock. I've been to many video game stores in California, and while my personal favorite is still Luna Video Games in San Diego, CA, this is not just a close second. This can arguably be the greatest retro video game store in the ENTIRE state of California. With California being the third largest state in the United States, that is an accomplishment. Honest Owner, and friendly staff. They wont BS you at this store. If they don't have it, they will refer you to the nearest game stop that does. They will even call Gamestop for you just to make sure they have the title. competitive pricing. I personally support small business owners, and prefer to take my business here first. I know personally that the owner of this store Gives back to his customers, and the community kids in the area. Try out ANY game before you buy it. Game stop wont open up a new copy of a game to let you play it before deciding to buy it. You can try out any game here. On one of several HDTV's set up for customers enjoyment. Game stations at this place. Don't have a modern game console, or maybe you don't have internet to play online? Or maybe you can't afford the newest COD games every few months? Pay to play game stations. Leather game chairs (complete with 12 in subwoofer in the seat, rumble, and surround sound) flat screen HDTV, and any console or game you wish to play. Stations are pay to play (last I checked it was around 5-8 per hour) BUT... when there is no one in line, the owner normally lets customers play a lot longer than they paid for. Moms/Dads This has been a hangout for some local kids in the area, where they can come after school. and enjoy gaming, in a safe environment. Why pay a baby sitter? bring your kids here, pay for an hour or two of game time, an go run errands or get your nails done. knowing your child is not leaving that game chair. Whole place is covered in security camera's, it really is a cool spot for the little kids to play games. (or the adults like myself who love to game) I come play games here, just so I wouldn't have to hear the GF complain about playing them at the house all day. pinball, arcade games, Retro games. Ok, this place is pretty freaking amazing. I usually go to Gamestop for all my gaming needs, but since I found this place GS will not be seeing me as much. The games are organized by section (no brainer), but they are displayed in a much neater fashion, showcasing most of the games with only a few having their spines displayed. The prices are incredible too. Leaving the store with two awesome games in hand for under $10.00 is a steal. The staff are friendly, and they have a bunch of pinball games in the back to play. Chris always hooking me up whenever he can. once he sold me a working Atari 7800 with 2 games, an entertainment center to me. he wanted to sell it to me personally because based on what i told him, he wanted me to have it because i appreciate my game systems and play them unlike other collectors that just have them just to have them. this is where he hooked me up with a price and i bought off of him. 150 bucks, not too bad since we tested it and got some atari 2600 games as well. definitely check this place out, they won't have rare games around, but if they do they'll give it to you if you ask. also they'll set you up with a phone service when they don't have the item you're looking for. can't say enough of this spot. read more
