The spot where Pho 79 sits now has changed hands a lot in the years I've been here. They're the first restaurant that's had the place that was worth reviewing. I had the meatball soup and spicy broth and couldn't have been happier. The noodles were chewy and a perfect length to twirl and slurp. The bean sprouts were crunchy, the meatballs had a perfect texture. The broth was the real hit though. The broth had layers of deep, rich flavor. This is the kind of rich, slightly fatty broth that you dream of on a cold winter day. It didn't need Sriracha, but it held up well to me dumping some in anyway. The area is very convenient to get to and once inside the restaurant, it is very spacious. The service is set up as a kitchen bar area where there is seating as well as traditional tables. The food arrived very fast and the payment method was very convenient with a tap of a card to pay. The food was very well portioned and tasted good. Hard to get here during our visit, 2 weeks post that Capital Riot, so many streets were blocked, National Guards and policemen were everywhere. I got to park the car with emergency flashing light to run inside to pick up the food. OK Pho, they give too much noodles to the pho broth portion. The rare beef was good. Im very picky about my pho! With that being said i could eat here everyday, (or from here). I have been here before covid and even after. the fact that business allows you to order from the yelp app is priceless to me. the only reason i give this business a good versus an excellent, would be the lack of parking. location is literally right next to the capitol, which made it not ideal last month but ultimately if you can pull up and pick up, i would highly recommend. Here's what's to love about this place: 1) Service: The staff are very kind. They treat you like family from start to end of your visit. If you have any questions about the menu, they are more than happy to answer them. 2) Food: My wife craves pho and enjoyed her beef pho. It's the best pho in this neighborhood. I ordered the pork chops with rice. It wasn't a lot of meat, but the spice on it was amazing. 3) Space: It's very close to Union Station and on a strip with several other restaurants and shops. I really wanted to like this place because we're big fans of Vietnamese food & this place is close by, but our dinner here was not a good experience. We started with the spring rolls. They were very dry & tasted like they'd been sitting around for a couple days. For my main course, I had the grilled chicken with lemongrass. The chicken was very thin & the portion of meat was very small. The flavor wasn't terrible, but I sure wish it had been stronger & the chicken juicier. The service was a concern as well. We ordered drinks right away (green tea for me, 7 Up for my husband), but they didn't arrive until after we'd finished our spring rolls. And even then the drinks didn't arrive until I reminded the waitress that we'd ordered them. As for the decor, there really isn't any. read more

Well,..hard to compare DC Pho with LA Pho...Lol. I had the beef and meatball pho and it wasn't to bad. They tend to watch how they serve there jalapeños, lime and sprouts but we had to ask for extra. The cilantro is already added in the soup and not part of the side dressings...ohhh and no basil?....but overall, the broth and meats were good. Also had the pork rolls and Thai ice tea. I was extremely excited that there was a pho place convenient to grab a quick lunch. The service was great but sadly to pho did not exceed my expectations. It was a bit too bland. When this place first opened, I wasn't impressed. Broth was a little watery, and the portions weren't particularly impressive. All that's since been ironed out. The pho is quite flavorful, and the portions are generous. They also now offer chili oil, fresh basil, etc. on the table. It's a pass for me. I ordered delivery from here and was unimpressed. The pho ga comes with beef broth, and nowhere is that noted. The broth was bland anyway. The aromatics came with the tiniest lime piece and no Thai basil or sawtooth. The hoisin and sriracha were pre-mixed together, which is no fun. No napkins or chopsticks were provided. The goi cuon lacked any herbs, and therefore flavor, and the peanut sauce wasn't good. One of the shrimp was not properly deveined. It was unclear whether I was ordering goi cuon or cha gio. The only thing I liked was the bowl for delivery (the noodles/meat are in a bowl and then you pour the broth over it). I'll skip this place in the future. read more

We went a few weeks after their grand opening and were super excited at the prospect of a good authentic pho place in the area. However the broth we had was super oily and not very good. Meat was minuscule and when I had asked them whether they could kindly boil the bean sprouts due to recent dietary concerns they said it was already boiled when clearly it was not. I've been to my share of Pho places, but this is by far my favorite. I went with the number three and passion fruit juice as was recommended by the guy there. Pho was great, ingredients were high quality. I learned they they ran multiple restaurants like this back in Vietnam, so it goes without saying the food was the real deal. What really stood out to me was the great service. I walked in and was immediately given a glass of water and a seat. It's a family run business and the staff had helpful suggestions about what to get (although I'm sure anything I would have chosen here would have been good). The restaurant was very clean too. I really liked the layout of the utensils and condiments too. I definitely recommend Pho 79. The food was great, but affordable. Tonight I had ordered the #8 via DoorDash. Any other place I have ordered pho from has always packed the hoisin sauce and chili paste separately, because most pho fans have their own palette-pleasing balance. Pho 75 mixed them together in same little cup. Not much choice now but to suffer through a ruined bowl of pho that is entirely too spicy. I can't even tell how the pho tastes as I can't taste it!! For $14 for a simple bowl of Pho I expect much better than a low-class move of not providing the sauces separately. Amazing new place right near my office here on Capitol Hill! I had the Bún Thit Nuong and the pork was delicious and served with a nice side of fish sauce.
