Phonatics is small-it maybe seats about 20 people in a no-frills atmosphere. We split the summer rolls which were delicious with a great dipping sauce. I got the Pho Dac Biet Special for my main dish, which was fine overall. I needed to eat urgently and was close by. I have passed this place so many times and assumed the food would be good. I'm not a fanatic, but I've had many bahn-mi in my days and this was hands down the best I've ever had. I had the combo banh mi and it was absolutely the right choice. It was so good, the bread was soft, the pate was creamy, and the lemongrass chicken was so moist and well seasoned. We also had a Thai Iced Tea and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee and both were great. Service was friendly and our food was indeed ready within the quoted time period. Phonatics Noodle Bar is a small Vietnamese eatery located off of 14th; we thought that it was fortuitous that this was right around the corner from where we were, so we came here for an early dinner. We were welcomed and were able to choose any table. You had to scan the QR code that was affixed on the table, and a staff member will come to take your order. We ordered: +Summer Rolls - opting out of the pork, this came filled with small shrimp and more heavier on the noodles and the lettuce; this seemed more of a veggie roll, and dipping it into their hoisin/peanut sauce with some sriracha made it fine +Beef Summer Rolls - I was not a fan of this, as the beef had an off-putting taste/odor to it; my friend thought it was extremely salty +Rocket Shrimp - typical wonton-wrapped shrimp that you find in Thai restaurants, this was super over-fried, which resulted the shrimp inside very rubbery +Banh Mi Lemongrass Chicken - the chicken, while generous in portions, was super bland and seemed to not have any marinade/seasoning on it; also, we found it odd that the meat was not hot and served less than lukewarm; in addition, the pickled daikon/carrots were limp-y, and weren't fresh - even though these are supposed to be pickled, the odor of them seemed like they were spoiled, if that's even possible! +Grilled Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli bowl - same situation with the flavorless chicken, this was hardly touched; the ratio was off in terms of the amount of noodles in there I think what left such a bad taste in our mouths was the following: +prices on their main website as well as the prices via their QR code (that also directs you to their menu page on their main website) are incorrect - we just couldn't understand why we were charged individually such an exorbitant amount when the bill was being split between us - we realized that the Rocket Shrimp was shown as $10, but the bill priced it at $11.99; we also realized that gratuity/tip must have been automatically included with our calculations, in which we added additional gratuity without knowing - we weren't informed of this beforehand (this is why I hate those type of payments because it places so much pressure on the customer in making it so obligatory to choose a tip option) +we did reach out to the owner(s) of Phonatics to give them an opportunity to explain/remediate; the offer of the $2 refund would require us to go back, in person, to the eatery for the transaction; I'm sorry, but you offer an electronic payment in the restaurant, was able to look up our bill in the system, but are unable to just process the refund? Obviously, we're not going to drive back into D.C. for the $2, but it's just super irksome, and, yes, you're right, Justin - this 'remediation' didn't warrant a response User error: For some reason, we didn't on this visit, but remember to always request an itemized bill as well as a copy of your receipt. I came here during lunch because I was really craving pho on a cold day. I saw the high ratings and was super excited. The place was in a great location with great decor and it felt really well lit. The broth was so bland that I had to pour a bunch or siracha and hoisin to feel like I got any flavor. I feel like when eating pho that's solely what I base it on. Also the meat was super tough and seemed overcooked. The sauce for the spring rolls just was ok and didn't seem like it was the right sauce-maybe I'm just used to fish sauce. The bathrooms were terribly maintained with the paper towels hanging loose on top of the dispenser -and just a squirt bottle of soap that poured all over me. Really wish it was better. Super incredible spot right on 14th street about a block from U street. They have a nice menu and cute place if you want to eat at the restaurant. They have great customer service and are quick with your order! I'm not sure what it is inside the restaurant but it smells amazing! It was something sweet and brightened my mood a little bit upon walking inside! I ordered the summer rolls and the pho dac beit (beef pho) and they were both outstanding! The summer rolls you could tell were made fresh. The crisp greens with the shrimped dipped in the peanut sauce was amazing! I also love the pho. It was exactly what I needed after a long day. The pho broth was super flavorful and filling. They gave me a ton of mean and broth. The thinly sliced beef was a little tough but it's cut so thin that I didn't mind it. Absolutely love this restaurant. The food is incredible. The banh mi is really good and doesn't skimp on the meat. We loved how crispy the egg rolls were and our toddler ate the majority of them, so definitely recommend for kiddos. The pho was the best part. The broth was incredibly flavorful and they don't overfill you on the noodles like some restaurants do. Mrs. Picante del Monte and I visited Washington DC in early November 2022, and we were treated to unseasonably pleasant weather. While many trees were in full autumn color, many were still green, holding onto summer as long as they could. Many of the younger residents were out in shorts and t shirts, while hotel employees made small talk with us Southern Californians like "a lot of years we have snow by now." But you're not here for a weather report, dear Yelp reader, and all that prologue leads inevitably to... transitionally for a review, I suppose... anoutstanding experience at a pho restaurant during our trip. I suppose this is as good as any place to mention that as a resident of the San Gabriel Valley in southern California, there is no shortage of Vietnamese restaurants in my native state. So many so, that one could argue we are spoiled with places that range from suggestive fusion to Saigon-authentic. Heck, there's a place just a mile and a half from my front door that is one of only two or three in the whole state that serves Bun Mam (that's a fermented fish noodle soup, Mildred... And when you smell it, you know it.) Is there such a thing as a pho snob? I'm not sure, but I suppose we are spoiled... And that unfortunate fact often comes to bear in our travels around the country as a family, when we find a place that says they serve the delightful Vietnamese soup, but it's nowhere near as good as the one we find in shopping malls in street corners around our hometown. And that little bit of information leads to this inevitable truth: Pho 54 in DC served me one of the best bowls of pho I have ever had. Breaking it down: the broth was delicious, hot, and complex, with all the right amounts of salty, star anise, onion, and beef flavor; The noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of chew, and there was a very generous amount of Dac biet meats and ingredients, complemented by the usual side of sprouts, chili, limes, and Thai basil. My wife is not as adventurous with the assorted cow parts, and always goes with tai chin, which matched my meal in terms of quality, flavor, and generous portion. We washed everything down with ice water from those awesome red plastic cups that always seem to be used in pho joints. I'm not sure what the entire scene is regarding Vietnamese noodle soup in Washington DC, but this place was several orders of magnitude better than most places we find when we travel far from home. On top of everything, the nice guy running the place was very friendly, and we spent some time sharing stories while we enjoyed our dinner. Great guy at a great place. I'm not sure when I will be back in Washington DC, but we're not the kind of folks to just sit at home and watch TV, so I imagine sooner rather than later, I will be back in town, with a hankering for a taste of home... I was shocked to see the amount of pho restaurants in the U Street/Columbia Heights area, but this was the one that was closest to my friend's apartment and it had great reviews. There isn't much seating here, but the ambiance is clean and each of the tables have some sort of inspirational and positive quotes printed on them. My friend and I were immediately seated for dinner today (Wednesday) and our food came out pretty shortly after we ordered. PHO DAC BIET SPECIAL - 15.99 For pho, this is pretty expensive, but I suppose I'm paying DC pricing. I didn't have much expectations going in since I haven't been too impressed by the pho in the DMV area. However, I'll have to say the first sip of the broth was phenomenal. It's a deep beef broth and actually felt like there were lots of layers - you could taste a hint of spice from the seasonings they used, the sweetness of the onion, and the rich beef flavor. My only quip (and it's a big one) was how oily/greasy the broth was. By the end of the meal, the broth was too heavy and was no longer enjoyable. Other than that, everything else was great, too! There was plenty of garnish (spring onions and onions, yum) and LOTS AND LOTS of noodles. I usually don't think restaurants give you enough noodles, but wow, they give you so much here! Also, the texture of the noodles were perfect. Each bite had a slight chew and it was consistent throughout the duration of my meal - the noodles worked well with the broth where the noodles didn't become soggy and the broth wasn't saturated by the starch. I'm not sure where they got these pho noodles from, but wow, probably one of the best I've had. The meat was also good and there was a lot of quality cuts. I was pleasantly surprised by the pho here and would recommend it (but would caution that the broth is extremely oily and heavy). For the amount of food given, I'd say it was well worth the price. I only wish the broth was less greasy. Otherwise, it would have been perfect. If I lived in the area, I don't know how often I'd eat pho here (since the heaviness of the broth is only good for some occasions). Stopped by Pho 54 while I was Downtown and it didn't disappoint. Ordering over the phone was easy and my order was ready at the time stated. I placed my order for pickup about half an hour after opening, so the Vietnamese iced coffee wasn't ready yet. Boo! Summer rolls were standard, but came with a decent amount of filling. Grilled pork banh mi was pretty good, with the baguette being on point (even with the drive home!). The bread was crunchy, yet soft on the inside. The grilled pork was very flavorful and was balanced by a similar amount of pickled daikin/ carrots jalapeno sloces, cilantro, and cucumber slices. My favorite of the dishes ordered was the vermicelli noodles with lemon grass chicken. The dish came packed with chicken that was juicy and packed with flavor. The dish also came with bean sprouts,shredded cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon radish, some peanuts, and mint. Definitely could have done without the peants and mint! Parking could be rough along the streets near the restaurant. Luckily I was able to find parking right away in a nearby neighborhood. If you are in the area and looking for solid Vietnamese food, I recommend checking out Pho 54. read more
