Phonatics is small-it maybe seats about 20 people in a no-frills atmosphere. We split the summer rolls which were delicious with a great dipping sauce. We were welcomed and were able to choose any table. You had to scan the QR code that was affixed on the table, and a staff member will come to take your order. Absolutely love this restaurant. The food is incredible. The banh mi is really good and doesn't skimp on the meat. We loved how crispy the egg rolls were and our toddler ate the majority of them, so definitely recommend for kiddos. The pho was the best part. Mrs. Picante del Monte and I visited Washington DC in early November 2022, and we were treated to unseasonably pleasant weather. While many trees were in full autumn color, many were still green, holding onto summer as long as they could. Many of the younger residents were out in shorts and t shirts, while hotel employees made small talk with us Southern Californians like "a lot of years we have snow by now." But you're not here for a weather report, dear Yelp reader, and all that prologue leads inevitably to... transitionally for a review, I suppose... anoutstanding experience at a pho restaurant during our trip. I suppose this is as good as any place to mention that as a resident of the San Gabriel Valley in southern California, there is no shortage of Vietnamese restaurants in my native state. So many so, that one could argue we are spoiled with places that range from suggestive fusion to Saigon-authentic. Heck, there's a place just a mile and a half from my front door that is one of only two or three in the whole state that serves Bun Mam (that's a fermented fish noodle soup, Mildred... And when you smell it, you know it.) Is there such a thing as a pho snob? I'm not sure, but I suppose we are spoiled... And that unfortunate fact often comes to bear in our travels around the country as a family, when we find a place that says they serve the delightful Vietnamese soup, but it's nowhere near as good as the one we find in shopping malls in street corners around our hometown. And that little bit of information leads to this inevitable truth: Pho 54 in DC served me one of the best bowls of pho I have ever had. Breaking it down: the broth was delicious, hot, and complex, with all the right amounts of salty, star anise, onion, and beef flavor; The noodles were cooked perfectly with just the right amount of chew, and there was a very generous amount of Dac biet meats and ingredients, complemented by the usual side of sprouts, chili, limes, and Thai basil. My wife is not as adventurous with the assorted cow parts, and always goes with tai chin, which matched my meal in terms of quality, flavor, and generous portion. We washed everything down with ice water from those awesome red plastic cups that always seem to be used in pho joints. I'm not sure what the entire scene is regarding Vietnamese noodle soup in Washington DC, but this place was several orders of magnitude better than most places we find when we travel far from home. On top of everything, the nice guy running the place was very friendly, and we spent some time sharing stories while we enjoyed our dinner. Great guy at a great place. I'm not sure when I will be back in Washington DC, but we're not the kind of folks to just sit at home and watch TV, so I imagine sooner rather than later, I will be back in town, with a hankering for a taste of home... I was shocked to see the amount of pho restaurants in the U Street/Columbia Heights area, but this was the one that was closest to my friend's apartment and it had great reviews. My friend and I were immediately seated for dinner today (Wednesday) and our food came out pretty shortly after we ordered. PHO DAC BIET SPECIAL - 15.99 For pho, this is pretty expensive, but I suppose I'm paying DC pricing. I didn't have much expectations going in since I haven't been too impressed by the pho in the DMV area. However, I'll have to say the first sip of the broth was phenomenal. It's a deep beef broth and actually felt like there were lots of layers - you could taste a hint of spice from the seasonings they used, the sweetness of the onion, and the rich beef flavor. My only quip (and it's a big one) was how oily/greasy the broth was. By the end of the meal, the broth was too heavy and was no longer enjoyable. Other than that, everything else was great, too! There was plenty of garnish (spring onions and onions, yum) and LOTS AND LOTS of noodles. I usually don't think restaurants give you enough noodles, but wow, they give you so much here! Also, the texture of the noodles were perfect. Each bite had a slight chew and it was consistent throughout the duration of my meal - the noodles worked well with the broth where the noodles didn't become soggy and the broth wasn't saturated by the starch. I'm not sure where they got these pho noodles from, but wow, probably one of the best I've had. The meat was also good and there was a lot of quality cuts. I was pleasantly surprised by the pho here and would recommend it (but would caution that the broth is extremely oily and heavy). For the amount of food given, I'd say it was well worth the price. I only wish the broth was less greasy. Otherwise, it would have been perfect. If I lived in the area, I don't know how often I'd eat pho here (since the heaviness of the broth is only good for some occasions). Stopped by Pho 54 while I was Downtown and it didn't disappoint. Ordering over the phone was easy and my order was ready at the time stated. I placed my order for pickup about half an hour after opening, so the Vietnamese iced coffee wasn't ready yet. Boo! Summer rolls were standard, but came with a decent amount of filling. Grilled pork banh mi was pretty good, with the baguette being on point (even with the drive home!). The bread was crunchy, yet soft on the inside. The grilled pork was very flavorful and was balanced by a similar amount of pickled daikin/ carrots jalapeno sloces, cilantro, and cucumber slices. My favorite of the dishes ordered was the vermicelli noodles with lemon grass chicken. The dish came packed with chicken that was juicy and packed with flavor. The dish also came with bean sprouts,shredded cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon radish, some peanuts, and mint. Definitely could have done without the peants and mint! Parking could be rough along the streets near the restaurant. Luckily I was able to find parking right away in a nearby neighborhood.
