Rode by this place today on my scooter. Made a point of going there for dinner tonight. I ordered the pho. Really solid. That said, I didn't order anything else. At least not on this first trip. I'm a big pho guy so I just had to get it. I'm giving them a very solid four stars for no other reason other than I really haven't tried anything else since this was my first trip. In order to be fair to folks who are looking at ratings I didn't think it was appropriate to give it a full five stars just yet. With that said Joe, the owner's son is a super cool dude. I've been waiting for a good pho/Vietnamese restaurant to open in the NoMA/Capitol Hill neighborhoods of DC. I got something even better: some of the best pho I've had in the DMV area just 2 blocks from my home. I've only tried the pho, but am super excited to come back and order their rice and noodle dishes. As a Vietnamese-American raised in a predominantly Vietnamese neighborhood, I'll daringly say Pho 79 is as good as it gets. I appreciate their sticking to a menu with Vietnamese staples like pho, com suong nuon, and bun thit nuong. All in all, I think a lot of people are happy to welcome this Vietnamese restaurant to the neighborhood! read more

By far the best pho I've had in the DMV. It smelled amazing upon entering the restaurant, everyone working was super friendly, and the pho was amazing. I go it to-go, it was still piping hot when I got home, and my roommate immediately mentioned how good it smelled and asked where I go it so she could get some. I got the brisket (which is usually very tough at other pho places) but this brisket was fall-apart tender and so delicious. The broth was also flavorful and so so good. I'm so happy this place is on my way home, I've been dying for a good pho place in the area. Anyone around should stop by and give them a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

I decided to opt out for chicken broth (which was already a reach for me being as though I'm pesca). They didn't have any chicken broth. Ok....at that point I was annoyed. I just ended up eating 4 summer rolls. Which came with pork in it so I had to hand-pick the pork out. That was more-so my fault for not reading the ingredients throughly but I did tell my server I didn't eat those kinds of meats...idk..I guess I felt a warning should've came after I ordered them. I brought my kids to try this new neighborhood restaurant. The young men who work here were very kind to my kids which I appreciate. We usually go to a Pho spot on 14th NW across from an Exxon Gas station and next to a liquor store. But we wanted to give this place a chance because we live within walking distance. The kids loved Pho. We got the #3. We also ordered the egg rolls that the kids liked until they discovered the mushrooms. The four of us shared two bowls, the meat and broth were ample however, we would order extra noodles next time. The price was shockingly high but the food was good. We will be back! My favorite pho place in DC so far! I usually trekked out to Eden Center or NOVA for a good bowl of pho since DC shops are not as good in comparison, but the one at Pho 79 has eliminated my need to travel outside the city! A lovely restaurant situated just a block from Union Station that has a fairly extensive menu of all my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I tried their pho dac biet and it was delicious! I spent a summer in DC and absolutely adored this spot. I am back in DC for good, and wanted to come to what was my favorite pho spot. I came and waited for 2 hours just to be seated, order and not receive my meal. There were 2 gentleman in front of me, a couple behind me and group of 7 after me as well. All in which were seated first, and given their meals first. It was only me dining in. I ordered spring rolls and pho and only received spring rolls. I hate to be this person but it gives off discriminatory vibes when you're the only Black person in the restaurant. The older lady waitress did not greet me, she was not welcoming yet greeted and welcomed everyone else. I consider myself a loyal customer to any entity I love, but unfortunately I will not be coming back to this establishment due to what I experienced. Nobody deserves that. So glad to finally have pho on the Hill! Was very excited to try this place, especially having come down with a summer cold. Got the Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup) and was very happy with it. The flavor of the broth was lovely, though I cannot comment on how authentically Vietnamese it is, it hit all the right notes for me. The soup came with everything I was expecting, possibly with more cilantro and scallions than other places, but that's not a bad thing in my book. Overall, this is comparable to the pho I have had from other places in the region, though the chicken here was shredded rather than the thinly sliced white meat that I am used to seeing. I am not opposed to this, nor the inclusion of dark meat (I suspect this cuts down on food waste) but I got a few pieces of chicken with tendon and ligaments still attached, which I don't enjoy in my soup. That is the only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5. I will absolutely return to Pho 79; I suspect it will be hard to resist when the weather gets cold. read more

I ordered pho and a side of meat balls on Uber Eats. They were meh and expensive. Most of the soup spilled out on the way due to the packaging. The noodles and soup taste alright but not good. I'm not a picky eater, but the food really disappointed me. One positive thing I could say is that the soup wasn't too salty. I don't recommend this place. The food are not cheap or tasty. This place has the worst customer service in DC. Ordered some food for pick up and went to their place 30mins afterwards. I stood in line and noticed that the cook started to make something that looked like what I ordered. So I asked, is that my order"? They reluctantly replied with, "yes". I asked them to cancel my order since I expected it to be ready when I arrived there. They were upset with me and then blamed me for arriving too early! If they simply apologized, I would have been fine with the delay. But instead, they blamed me for coming too early and that they had a back-log. The second they blamed me, instead of apologizing, gave me the impression that they feel like they shouldn't have any accountability over their business. Stay away. read more

SUCH A SCAM! I was charged $17.50 for an item that was listed as $13. When I tried to clarify, he said that the prices have gone up??? Even though the menu was right in front of me. I was very happy when I stopped into Pho 79 DC yesterday. It was blustery outside so I ordered Pho with meatballs... delicious! Love the chili paste! I also placed an order for pork chop and rice to go. Wow! Loved it! Best pork chop I've had in a while, rice cooked to perfection and a tangy fresh side salad all made a wonderful entree. I've been eating pho for 36 years now, and after having been here twice, I can definitively say that this pho restaurant is disappointing, overpriced, and unfriendly. This most recent trip I ordered the #19 - pho bap tai dac biet. Dac biet ("special" in Vietnamese) is universally used to denote a combination of meats; this bowl, however, came with only one kind - the smallest, cheapest-quality cuts of tai (eye of round) I've ever had. It didn't even come with any of the bap (shank) that's in the name of the dish. Thinking it must have been a mistake, I asked the owners about it, and the wife treated me like I was crazy and kept talking about me to her husband in Vietnamese as if I couldn't understand them (whoops - I can), saying there was a lot of meat in the bowl (there wasn't) and that it was only supposed to come with tai (leaving aside the "dac biet," it should at LEAST also have the bap that's in the name - but then it should also be $11.95 like the #1 pho bap tai without the "dac biet" instead of the $13.95 I paid). Other assorted issues that I could ordinarily live with if the food were good, not misleadingly labeled, not overpriced, and the owners didn't spend ten minutes talking about me in front of me: - Had to ask for Thai basil because it wasn't offered. - Wasn't given any napkins and had to get my own from a next-to-empty dispenser from the counter. - Wasn't offered or given any water. Twice is enough - I won't be back. If you're not stuck in the neighborhood, try Pho Viet in Columbia Heights or Pho 75 in Arlington instead. read more

Wow! Such good pho! I had chicken, one of my dinner companions had beef and the other also had the chicken. The broth was wonderfully full flavored and the meats were tender. Lots of sprouts, peppers and lime cubes to enhance the pho. I can't wait to try more items from their menu. One note of caution is that if you are physically disabled, you may want to get your treats via delivery. The stairs up to the entry almost did me in. Finally, I can say I have more than one good neighborhood restaurant. Pho 79 is a charming, family-owned restaurant. I've eaten there twice since they opened. On the first visit at 2pm, I felt a little pressure to decide quickly so I just pointed to the picture that looked best. There was one other customer when I arrived and then at least ten other people arrived after me. My first meal was Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (#31, rice noodles with grilled meat and spring rolls). I added some Hoisin and Siracha sauce to my bowl. When mixed altogether, it was just mouthful after mouthful of a lightly sweetened and spicey meat, rice noodles, and vegetable topped with peanuts. It's the first time I've eaten this Vietnamese dish (I've only ever had Pho) but I'm glad I branched out. Last but not least, the egg rolls were as good as when my mom and I make Lumpia (a Filipino egg roll that is highly addictive). The egg roll is one egg roll cut in half, which was just enough for me. My lunch that day cost $14.30 (not including tip) and it was a very filling meal, comparable in the amount of food (and cost) you'd get at say, Cava or Chopt. I probably could have saved half for later, but I was particularly hungry. On my second trip, I went at 11:30am and was one of five other customers and then the restaurant filled up quickly as I waited and then ate my meal. Filled with confidence from my first meal, (I did a little research of their menu a head of time, a pic of the menu is available via Google) my second meal was Com Suon Trung (#25, rice with grilled pork chop and egg) and a side of Phan cha gio 2 cuon (#34, two pieces of spring rolls, had to get them again, so delicious as the first time and they come with a dipping sauce). The meal was delightful and filling. I was a little concerned about eating pork chops with chopsticks, but I just ended up using my fingers. I tried the Hoisin sauce on the rice with the restaurant's pepper sauce and gobbled it up. I hoped to try their coconut drink, but they didn't have any in stock yet. So I ended up trying the limeade which was refreshing, though it was too sweet for me (but likely perfect for most everyone else, I just like more acid less sweet). One of the owners (I think) asked me how I was enjoying it and so I let him know. It was nice to see a face of a business and be asked about their product. To me, that's part of a good customer service experience. My lunch this trip cost $25.00 (and I tipped a $10 for my two visits). The restaurant offers people the flexibility to dine in or order takeaway. Though, if you dine in the waitstaff are efficient, attentive, and no-nonsense. One of them remembered me, which was nice. The floor manager is friendly and jumps in often to help keep things running smoothly. After my second meal, I really left feeling like I would probably have a good time at one of their family BBQs and the food would be as delicious as it usually is when I eat with my own family. This restaurant is on its way to being a go-to staple for people working in the area and I hope equally as successful with the neighborhood families (certainly, I will be there with mine in the future). The decor and ambiance are inviting and clean. If you ever went to the previous restaurant, you'll notice that Pho 79 is very bright and welcoming in comparison. The door is fixed, the furniture is new, with smaller tables on the right as you come in--perfect for solo diners. The space just feels bigger and open. There was some music playing, but I didn't notice it being good or bad. It is quiet enough you can have a conversation, unlike most restaurants in DC. One thing to note, if you tend to tip, pay in cash so you can tip. The first time I went there, I paid with my card and there was no way to tip. read more
