So there I was relaxing on my bed at 1:15am playing Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven on my PS2 (Yeah, its old but still a great game). A little buzzed from some beer during dinner, I figured I'd just finish a stage and go to sleep. Then just as I was about to fight the master villain I get a call from my friend Allen D. a.k.a. Papichulo/Sr. Principal Engineer (whatever that is...). It seemed his M3 got a flat tire and his car didn't have a spare (apparently not all BMW's carry spares) and no he did not have "run flat" tires.
So knowing what it feels like to be stranded somewhere in the middle of the night, I placed my game on pause and drove out to around LAX where he pulled over. By the time I found him and a flat bed truck from BMW took away his M3, it was 2:35am.
Marking the time, my growing headache, and the need to work the next day, we decided to forgo sleep and get a bite to eat. Since Allen D. lived in Orange County, we decided to go to Westminster and hit up a 24 hour Pho restaurant. Always down for an adventure, I put the pedal to the metal and arrived in Westminster about 20-25 minutes later. As I cruised down Bolsa Avenue, I was surprised to find a few Pho restaurants with their lights still on. (Damn, I gotta recon this area more in the day time!)
Not knowing one restaurant from another, I turned into the parking lot of Pho Hoa when Allen D. who prides himself on being "a man who knows many things" recommended Luc Dinh Ky. In fact, he so confidently stated "...on Fridays there's like a line down the parking lot for the restaurant!" (btw, Allen's latin...) it peaked my interest and I drove off toward Luc Dinh Ky.
Unfortunately, upon arriving at Luc Dinh Ky, we quickly learned the restaurant closes at 3am. In fact, Pho Hoa and most of the restaurants in the area close around 3am. Fortunately for us, Pho Thanh restaurant was right across the street and open 24 hours.
Now being a person whose eaten Pho in NY, SF, and LA, I gotta say my Pho Tai Sach was simply OK. Then again, I'm also a person who likes the way Pho is made at restaurants, with all the MSG and anise, and not when its homemade and/or 100.0% organic. I also found the portions and the price very reasonable. (Thanks for paying Allen...) Especially when you compare it to a small bowl of Pho in Brentwood that costs $7.95! If I remember right Pho Thanh was priced between $5.00 - $7.50 depending on the bowl size. Chicken Pho was 50.0% off (I think since I can't read Vietnamese).
Pho Thanh is a moderately large size restaurant with something like 20-25 tables and a security guard by the door. The bathroom also had the classic Asian restaurant slippery floors. Surprisingly, there were a few tables filled with people that night and two mid aged women working the night shift. While I'd really rate the restaurant 3.00 stars, I'm giving Pho Thanh 4.00 stars because of the two mid aged ladies working at 3:45am (power to the people!) and the fact that the restaurant is really 24 hours.
I totally recommend hitting up Pho Thanh if you just want Pho late at night, getting that drunk headache after 3am or just don't want to wait in line for Luc Dinh Ky (uh maybe not...depends on whose waiting in line...). read more
