I love a good Vietnamese place that not only gives you good portions but also great deals. They caught my eye a while ago and I saw they had the infamous Waterfall Chicken for only $10.99, a steal of a deal especially with tomato price & an egg. The chicken was crispy and the dipping sauce gave it that extra yummy goodness. The dish also came with a side of broth that had chicken bits in it, was nice to help digest your dish. I also loved that they gave you pickled veggies & fresh veggies. We also ordered the Loi's Fusion Saltado, upgraded the rice to garlic egg fried rice. The beef was soft and tender, the fries were nice and crispy and the fried rice was fresh. You 100% need to get the Thai Tea. A lot of place add too much cream/half and half diluting the tea flavor, they do not skimp on the actual tea in their drink. The color speaks for itself on the dark orange hue! read more

Welcome to Day 2 of OC Food Journals, where I try a new place every day so you don't have to. Today's stop was Loi's Kitchen, and honestly, this review is a little overdue. I'm a bit late getting around to writing this, and unfortunately, they are already closed, but I still felt like I had to share my experience. I'm not completely surprised that they closed, especially after trying their bò né. I've had this dish many times at different places around Orange County, and unfortunately, this was probably the weakest version I've come across. The first thing that stood out was the presentation. As you can see in the picture, there was this purple-colored sauce on the meat itself, which honestly did not look very appetizing. To make things worse, the sauce was cold and did not heat in time with the skillet, which really took away from the experience. The flavor itself wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't anything memorable. It was just okay, and when you factor in the cold food and the presentation, it made the whole dish disappointing. With so many places around Orange County serving bò né at a much higher level, I would probably recommend spending your money elsewhere. If you were wondering whether you missed out on some hidden gem, don't worry, you didn't. This one felt more like a piece of coal than a diamond. That being said, every restaurant has its journey, and with more time, maybe they could have found their footing. Hopefully, they can take this experience as a lesson, refine their recipes, and bring something better in their next venture. I am rooting for you Loi! read more

Tried this spot after seeing an advertisement online for their fried chicken and rice plate. The promotion was only 11$ for a plate. The chicken was crispy just as expected. Located in the same plaza as OC & Lau, there's plenty of parking in the plaza because the plaza is quite big. their under $2 herbal tea is awesome too. Their Bo Kho is a comfort food too. Loi's Kitchen is a hidden gem!!! Our group had Christmas lunch here yesterday, and luckily, we came right before the rush. Loi's was able to accommodate our large group over two tables - one of their center tables, and a booth. Service was prompt and attentive - our awesome waitress checked in on us a few times, despite how packed the place was getting as we headed into lunch hour on Christmas Day. Decor was cute - they had a Christmas tree up, restaurant was kept clean, and it was amusing to see they have some travel agency ad as placemats lol. I opted for the Hu Tieu Bo Kho, while the rest of the group ordered everything from the Bun Mam, to the Banh Mi Chao, Goi Salad, and Banh Canh Tom Cua. Hu Tieu Bo Kho is my favorite dish to get at most Vietnamese restaurants, if they don't have Pho, BBH or Bun Rieu (which this spot doesn't offer) - and the waitress read my mind when she told me their beef stew is very tender. The HTBK was awesome! You get a huge serving, with good topping/meat to noodle ratio. The broth was thick, flavorful and hearty. Each bite of the meat was juicy, tender, and delicious. This dish alone is something that will bring me back here in the future. One of the best HTBK I've had in the Orange County area. Friend picked Banh Mi Chao - which took a bit longer to come out from the kitchen, but that was fine - and I was happy to wait since my HTBK was hot. It's served on a sizzling plate and smelled delicious. I tried a bit of the meatball and pate - which was awesome - the pate literally melts in your mouth. The rest of the group enjoyed their food too - but I didn't manage to snap any photos since we had to split between the center table and booth due to our group size. Overall a great visit - kudos to the waitstaff for managing a full house on a busy holiday. Our booth was right next to the kitchen, so I was able to hear a lot of their communications with each other calling out orders or requests from different tables. Parking can get messy in this plaza - it's packed with other seemingly popular businesses, and I think we lucked out yesterday simply because we came a bit earlier than lunch hour, and because it was Christmas - so a few of the neighboring businesses were closed. I got the banh canh tom cua and it was delicious. Just a word of caution: the soup dishes come out so hot. Be careful. The soup was appropriate portion, however, not a lot of toppings (crab, mushroom). Food doesn't come out all at once so expect a wait in between if you're with others. The broth wasn't hot enough and the fish was still raw because it hadn't completely thawed. I was so hungry that I left the fish and ate the meat and fish cake. The roast pork was very hard to chew . I had almost finished 1/2 my bowl but my friend's bowl still hadn't been brought out. Meanwhile, the two of us ordered 2 bowls of Bun Mam at the same time. And I reminded the waiter, my friend's bowl of Bun Mam was also brought out and the result wasn't any better than mine. The broth wasn't hot enough and the fish was raw like mine. After that, I had diarrhea all night. It was scary. Opening a restaurant requires a conscience and careful cooking to serve customers, otherwise no one will dare to come back to eat. read more

PSA: The problem with Loi's Kitchen is that they automatically charge you 18% gratuity for all party sizes. I got charged $13-$14 for the automatic gratuity. Not knowing any better, I added an additional cash tip for another $13 dollars. The service charge is written on the receipt, however, it's a little confusing because in what world does it make sense to charge 18% for a casual dining experience? Upsetting. Food wise, Loi's menu is interesting, good, though unfocused. I mostly came for the bánh hỏi heo quay ($14.49). It's steam woven rice vermicelli noodles with crispy roasted pork. The crispy pork was crispy pork-ing. The pork belly had just the right amount of fat with a thin crispy layer of skin. They serve this dish with fish sauce, which is sufficient though not satisfying the way it tastes with mắm nêm. I also shared the bánh mì chảo ($18.49). It's a sizzling breakfast platter with filet mignon, a pork meatball, eggs, pâté, and a baguette. Unlike other places where the pâté is its own entity, the version here is quite different. The pâté is slathered on top of the filet mignon which, I guess, makes for a convenient bite. While the steak was tender and flavorful, I didn't like meatball whatsoever. It was a literal Italian meatball in tomato sauce which didn't really mingle with the rest of the flavors. Loi's is cool, but heed the PSA. read more

I mean we have good Vietnamese food in the bay too but when traveling with a parent they have to have some Vietnamese food after eating too much American food during our trip. On the menu: Cajun fries with teriyaki wings: 4/5 Fries were hot and fresh and I cough a bit with the Cajun seasoning lol. Wings were good and flavorful. I would prefer them to be a bit more crispy. Com bo luc lac: (shaken beef rice plate) 5/5 my kid devoured this! Beef was tender and seasoned well and lots of salad. I came into town today from Northern California. I was scrolling on Instagram and Loi's kitchen came up on my feed so we decided to come for dinner. I was a bit worried walking in and the restaurant was not as busy as the other restaurants in the same shopping plaza. But we were pleasantly surprised with how delicious the entrées we ordered were. Bun Mam is tough to do given how niche it is amongst Vietnamese people. My mom loves this dish and we've been back twice because of it. Negatives: -size, the restaurant itself is very small with only one large table. So if you have a party more than 4 you'll need to wait. We only had 5 people and we had to wait for the large table. -value, this one is tough because they did offer a 4% cash discount and a 10% thanksgiving discount. However, we came here two weeks ago and the prices were cheaper. So those discounts are fake.... Positives -taste, I got the dry noodle special with crispy pork. The sauce was good and portion was good. My wife's shaken beef with fried rice was really good too. My brother got the banh mi with egg and steak. That was also delicious for him. Of course their signature bun mam was good for my mom. The fried dough w/egg was exceptional, though pricey for what it is. -service was standard.
