This place was recommended by my Vietnamese brother-in-law. He said the Banh Canh is better than his mother's (lol). We got here on a rainy day and there was still a line out the door. We decided to wait it out. The menu is on their window and very simple. We got the banh canh with Chinese donut. It was delicious. The soup had so much flavor and the noodles were nice and chewy. I like that this restaurant actually uses crab meat in their soup. The cilantro was a nice touch too. Staff were very nice and worked fast to get us in.
Mai Phung is well regarded for Banh Canh. They are open for dine-in limited hours, until 3pm offers take out until 7pm. I went on a Monday afternoon and there was a bunch of people waiting outside for a table. It's a small spot with limited tables but I only waited 10-15 minutes. I ordered the #1, Banh Canh Tom Cua Thit. Vietnamese udon with crab, shrimp and pork. I love the chewy texture of the thick noodles. The soup reminded me of Rou Geng Tang, a Taiwanese thick soup but is still considerably different in flavor profile. It was delicious albeit a bit bland so I had to add the lemon and fish sauce that's on every table. I also added a ton of the chili sauce which I absolutely loved. It's very spicy and has the flavor profile of puréed fresh chilis. Tread lightly if you don't have a high heat tolerance like I do. Overall, it's good, albeit a bit pricey for what it is. In each bowl theres two shrimps, generous with the pork, but didn't really notice much crab. Still one of top Banh Canhs in my books!
I've heard about Mai Phung for a while on social media. I came with my mother for lunch on a Monday. We waited probably around 15 minutes and there were about two or three other parties before us. Be sure to sign in on the notepad. There are a few plastic stools in the front. While you're waiting, they will take your order to add it to the queue for the kitchen. When our turn was up, we were seated at small table for two. I noticed another gentleman by himself at a table for four people. Hmmmm. Anyhow, there were about five tables total inside or maybe six. It was very warm inside since there is no AC. This is a type of life where you eat and leave as quickly because it's a no-frills no ambience type of place. That's fine with me except it was pretty hot. They charge you a dollar for a little tiny paper cup of water. I ordered the number one since this is their specialty or what they're known for. My mom had the bun thit nuong cha gio. My noodle soup had a good amount of crab pieces and shrimp. It seemed like there was not a lot of noodles though. I thought the broth was a little bland. I guess I'm just not a big fan of this type of soup. If there is a next time, I'll try the bun rieu. My mother was not that crazy about her dish. She said she didn't really like the egg rolls that much. For the price, the wait and the taste of the food, I likely will not be returning when there are so many other places in the area. I try to support various mom and pop restaurants, but for the previous stated reasons, I don't think we'll be back.
Mai Phung in Westminster is such a solid, no-frills spot if you're looking for genuine, local Vietnamese comfort food. It's super casual inside with a very local vibe, and the kind of place where you come strictly for the food rather than a fancy setup. They're super well-known for their Bánh Canh, and for good reason--the thick, chewy tapioca noodles in that rich, comforting broth are incredible and easily the main event here. But surprisingly, their Phở Đặc Biệt is also excellent. The broth is deep and flavorful, the meat cuts are generous, and it easily competes with a lot of the dedicated phở spots around Little Saigon. To wash it all down, their Vietnamese iced coffee is a must--super strong, rich, and gives you that perfect, intense sweet-and-bold kick. Just a heads-up that the line can get pretty long, and the wait takes a while since they seem a bit understaffed. But once you finally get seated, the food comes out piping hot. If you're in the area and don't mind a wait for authentic, heavy-hitting noodle bowls, Mai Phung is definitely worth dropping into.
I've been coming here for over three years, and it's easily one of the top three spots for bánh canh tôm cua in Orange County. I recommend arriving early, since the line gets long around lunchtime. They take your order while you wait though, so your food comes out quickly once you're seated. I'm also a huge fan of adding extra lemon to my Viet noodle soups, so I love that each table has plenty of pre-cut slices for self-service. This place really knows what it's doing.

It was for me an absolutely flavorful and satisfying broth noodle soup with pork & shrimp. Make sure to arrive early to get a seat at this restaurant with only a few tables or plan on ordering take out.
Ordered the Shrimp & Crab Udon without Pork at Mai Phung to-go and it was delicious. Broth is thick and flavorful with good amount of crab and nice size shrimp. The udon noodle was thick with a good chew to it. Service was quick and accommodating to our request. Family owned business ambiance - quaint and simple - nothing to rave about. Over-all the Shrimp & Crab Udon is delicious (Banh Canh Tom Cua)
Very limited seating and quite busy on weekends of course, but worth the wait. We arrived around 1pm and got seated by 1:50pm for a table of 2. There's a yellow notepad near the entrance on the window sill which is where you can write your name and party number down if staff is too busy serving tables. They go down the list and take your order prior to getting seated, menu is taped to the window to view. 1. Banh Canh Tom Cau Thit -thick silky rich broth perfect for cold weather with silky noodles, wished it was slightly more chewier. Shrimp was fresh with a crisp snap. Crab was fresh and flavorful but there were a few crab cartilage here and there but not too many, just spit them out. Pork was thinly sliced and tender. I'm from San Gabriel Valley and there aren't many restaurants that serve Banh Canh. I personally think it's worth the drive out here. 15. Phan Cha Gio (eggrolls)- so crispy! It's the rice paper type of eggroll, paired well with my hot bowl of Banh Canh. Pork filling was juicy and tender.

There was a notepad outside to add your party's info onto and a few short, plastic seats available for use. A few minutes before being seated, the host would take your order. So after being seated, you'll just wait a bit longer for the food to arrive to the table. I had the banh canh cua tom thit and the noodles and broth consistency were nice. The noodles were soft and bouncy, while the broth had just the right amount of thickness for my liking. The toppings were plentiful and the bowl itself was filling. The banh canh is what they're known for but honestly, I was overhyped for it. Don't get me wrong, it was ok but I was expecting much better. Would I crave it again? No. Would I wait as long for it? Probably not. But it's probably good to have when you do crave banh canh since there's not too many other places in the area that serves it well. My group also had the bun thit bo xao and mi kho tom cua thit. The bun thit bo xao was said to be not as appetizing compared to the mi kho. The mi kho was said to be flavorful and enjoyable, and it also came with a small side of broth. Prices on the menu is a flat charge. So, if it was $17, your total is $17. Also, heads up! There's no A/C in there and the door stays open. So be prepared to be hot while eating, unless it's cool outside.
Just warning you, you will wait. It's a small restaurant with about 7 tables. Is it the worth the wait? Most definitely. This restaurant is known for its banh can com của. The broth is perfectly thick. And there is so much crab! I was surprised to see mushrooms (I love mushrooms!). There is a homemade chili that will set your mouth on fire so be warned. But it's delicious. Service is quick and friendly.

3.5 stars. I've heard about Mai Phung from a YouTuber and stopped by for lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty good overall, but it was missing something. We waited about 30-40 minutes with a few parties ahead of us. They'll take your order while you wait. The restaurant itself is very tiny, no-frills, and more of an eat-and-go kind of spot. We ordered the bánh canh tôm cua, which they're known for. It came with a good amount of crab, shrimp, and meat, and the noodles had great texture, but I found the broth a little lacking in flavor. Would recommend adding in lime and fish sauce provided at each table. My partner got the bún thịt nướng chả giò but thought they skimped on the egg rolls and grilled pork (they used the same meat from the bún chả, which I didn't like). For the wait and food, I probably wouldn't come back since there are so many other great Vietnamese options in the area. read more
It'd be hard to stumble upon this place unless you were specifically seeking out their signature dish, Banh Canh, or Vietnamese thick noodle soup. However, I'd encourage anyone who hasn't had the dish before to try it if you're a fan of a thick starchy broth and wonderfully chewy udon noodles. There are different meat options to go along with the soup - crab, pork, etc., or any combination of. There's also a "light" broth option which is less thick but equally delicious. Aside from the soup, the egg rolls here are deliciously crisp and crunchy as they're made with rice paper instead of the standard egg roll wrapper. The restaurant is a great example of a hole-in-the-wall that's 100% worth trying. Expect to wait 20-30mins to be seated during normal dining hours due to the low room capacity and popularity of the restaurant (the food comes out really fast though!). read more

Mai Phung is highly recommended on Yelp for its Banh Canh noodle soup, so I had to give it a try. I ordered the Banh Canh Tom Cua ($17), and it was flavorful and hit all the right notes. The noodles were soft and thick, served with just enough shrimp and crab meat. The broth is on the thicker side, but the lime wedges on the table help balance it out nicely. I also tried the Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($17). It was solid, but it didn't stand out compared to similar dishes at other Vietnamese spots. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait during peak times. My only complaint is the price, at $17 per bowl, it feels a bit steep. Modest little place with some cheap tables and chairs. And the customer service...it's a true Asian restaurant. The food though...out of this world. The only place I have had "better" Banh Canh Cua was My Canh in San Francisco. Definitely a "hole in the wall". And worth it for authentic Banh Canh Cua in Orange County. read more
By far my favorite banh canh spots, my boyfriend and i love coming here for their banh cảnh and recently we just discovered they offer chinese donuts. The wait can be pretty long on the weekends if you're coming in right when they open. Be mindful that there's only like 6 tables inside. read more
We came to Mai Phung to try the dish which is known as the best Banh Canh Cua in OC, and it did not disappoint. We arrived during lunch time and there was already a long line in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is quite small just like many restaurants in Vietnam with not many tables so wait time was a bit long. You would better plan ahead of time if you want to try this out. We made the order outside while waiting and once the table is ready, they bring the food out for you. We tried both the original Banh Canh Cua and the clear broth version that I hadn't heard of before. Both have their own unique taste. The portion and flavor were decent and really close to what I remember in Vietnam. However, I still feel like it's not there yet. In overall, Mai Phung is a great place if you want to try out the infamous Banh Canh Cua from Vietnam. I'd still want to come back again next time if I have a chance to visit OC. I personally think this place could use a little refresh with a cleaner surroundings and upgraded tables and chairs to make it shine brighter. read more

The bánh canh was amazing, made with fresh ingredients like shrimp, noodles, and crab. The soup was incredibly flavorful! I just wish they gave a bit more noodles. Each dish is around $17. Be prepared to wait in line since the restaurant is very small, with only about 6-7 tables. I would definitely come back! read more

I love banh canh and have been eyeing this location for so long! A small hole in the wall restaurant serving delicious bowls of banh canh and egg rolls. There was a wait when due to limited seating but they take your order while you wait and the food comes out as soon as you sit down. I love that the banh canh noodles are chewy and broth was full of crab flavor and was piping hot. I was told the hot sauce was spicy so I added 2 drops and squeeze in a little bit of lime. Definitely get the eggroll. They are crispy and hot. Wrap them in some lettuce and herbs for the perfect bite. They do charge for water so I just brought in my own bottle. read more
Cozy little hole in the wall restaurant that serves amazing Banh Canh. Banh Canh is my favorite vietnamese dish and this place takes the cake on making it perfect every single time. Currently the Banh Canh price is $17. The portion is crazy. It's so much food. I always have a hard time finishing it all. The crab bits with shrimp is chefs kiss. The thick broth is the star of the show. The umami goodness intertwined with the banh canh noodles works so harmoniously well. I've tried every Banh Canh place in OC and this place is still my favorite spot. Their take out hours differs from their regular restaurant hours. read more

My friends said this is the best spot for banh canh so I wanted to try it out. The restaurant is small with about 6-8 tables. I heard it gets very busy on the weekends, but I came on a Sunday around 11:40 AM and luckily there was only 1 party ahead. It did get more crowded after 12:00 PM. They're very efficient and quick though. They take your order before your table is ready so make sure to check the menu that's posted outside beforehand. Once your table is ready, your food comes out very quick after you sit down. I ordered two of the recommended items: * Banh Canh (Vietnamese udon) with crab, shrimp, and pork - $17 Comes with a good amount of crab. Wish the noodles were a little chewier, but would definitely get it again. * Bun Thit Nuong Cha Giáo (vermicelli with pork and egg roll) - $17 The pork and egg roll were very flavorful. I think the egg roll was a little hard on the outside, but still good! They do charge $1 for iced water or you can get iced tea for the same price and it comes with refills. I also don't think there's AC in the restaurant so it can get a little warm, especially if you're having hot soup. Overall, the food was good and I would come back. My friends wanted to come here after seeing it on tik tok and I had this place bookmarked so I was excited to go. There are a lot of places on tik tok that has steer us wrong but this is not one of them. Parking is easy with a good amount of parking. This place is small so write your name and wait for your call. Please look over the menu because you do put in your order before seating just to keep the line moving. We ended up getting four items, we got the banh Canh which is the Vietnamese udon which is their house specialty. We also ordered the hu tieu, stir fry clear vermicelli, and egg rolls. Most of the dishes we picked came with crab, pork, and shrimp. Everything came out great. Surprisedly, my favorite was the stir fry vermicelli, the flavors on that dish kept me wanting to eat more. It was made really well. The service was quick and outstanding. The man was running around and was on it. He was like doing four jobs at once and killing it. Overall, if you're cravings for some comforting Vietnamese food, this is definitely a place to try. read more

10 out of 10! When people say hole-in-the-wall joints hit, this is exactly what they mean. I was on TikTok and saw a video of a girl eating Banh Canh, so that got me craving Banh Canh since I'd never tried it. Then found another video of someone recommending this place. Man, it did not disappoint especially for my first experience of this dish. We tried #1, the Banh Canh, #3, the dry noodles, and #16, the stir-fried clear noodles. I loved all of them! What really stood out was how much filling they packed into these dishes. When they say there's crab, they mean it. There was so much crab laced into the soup and noodles. I also love that the Banh Canh soup is a little thick so the broth perfectly coated the thicker udon noodles. This has quickly become one of my favorite spots, and I highly recommend it! Prices aren't bad considering the amount of seafood you get with each dish. Parking is easy as they're in a strip mall. There might be a little bit of a wait considering how good they are. read more
