Com Tam Thanh has a special place in my heart. My parents have been coming here since they were dating. It is my family's favorite com tam, or broken rice, restaurant. Broken rice is a beloved Vietnamese rice dish made from the broken rice grains, which was once the budget type of rice for the poor farmers, but now it is a delicacy that is enjoyed for the softness of its' textures. While deciding what to eat for lunch, my boyfriend mentioned wanting a rice dish. I knew exactly where to go. I had been missing Com Tam Thanh so it was perfect timing for our taste buds to align. This plaza has awful parking, but it's something I come to accept since I love the food here so much. Service is quick and straightforward, in a good way. The interior is spacious and there are plenty of tables. Com Tam with a porkchop or grilled pork is pretty basic. I was telling my boyfriend they master the Tau Hu Ky here. Their translation for that is a shrimp mousseline in tofu paper. They cut these ridges into it giving it more crispy surface area. I told him whichever dish he gets, I highly recommend one of the dishes that has Tau Hu Ky. My boyfriend ends up getting the #8 Com Tam Bi Cha Suon Tau Hu Ky ($17.75) which is the broken rice with julienne pork, steamed pork cake, bbq pork chop and shrimp mousseline in tofu paper. The #8 is one of their house specials and it is a larger portion than the other rice plates. I order my go-to #10 Com Tam Tau Hu Ky Thit Nuong ($14.75) which is the broken rice with shrimp mousseline in tofu paper and bbq pork. I also added a Fried Egg ($?). While we were waiting for our food, they brought out utensils, water, and the fish sauce and side of broth that comes with the rice dishes. The food came out pretty quickly. The server was teasing me how my boyfriend's order is bigger than my order, but I joked back that I can just steal from his plate. This meal really hit the spot for both of us. Every bite was incredible and there was a generous amount of protein and it perfectly compliments the broken rice. I was savoring the meal and I finished my whole plate. The #10 is perfect for me because I know I can finish it. If you have a healthy appetite, #4-8 are the bigger orders. You can also order any of these proteins a la carte too. If you want to maximize your meat options and with variety, you want to order from the section where the price is around $17.75 before tax. The menu can be confusing since many items have similar options. Therefore, look at it carefully. The service can be haphazard since it's a Vietnamese business and not everyone has decent English language skills to communicate with you effectively. Please keep that in mind. By the way, I do speak Vietnamese but I have 1 of the harder dialects (central region).
