second time trying this place out as the first time was just a to go order and sooo long ago, but i'd say it was still pretty good as i remember. it's a small, casual establishment with just a handful of tables but ive never experienced any wait. service is nice and food comes out decently fast. i believe all the broken rice entrees come with the side of soup and that's always a nice warm, delicate broth to just get your appetite ready. everything was delicious, but if i had to nit pick at anything the bone in pork chop was just a little salty and kinda dry for my liking but still went great with everything else as the seasonings were good regardless. read more

Starting soup is nice and light, and the com tam itself is not bad. I think the pork should be smokier and the egg cake is definitely way too soft. Should be firmer but maybe that's just personal preference. Portions varied from plate to plate. The bbq beef rib was actually pretty smoky and had a good flavor and texture. Its been a while's since the last time I tried Com tam thien hao, and this will be my first dining in. Came in on Friday around 1130 am for lunch, plenty of parking, but parking kind of tight. Got seated right away and I ordered my usual Com Tam Bi cha thit nuong tau hu ky. Soup n fish sauce came first, followed by the com tam. I love the thit nuong is actually grilled on a skewer and pulled off for you, had good flavor, the cha and bi were basic, tau hu ku was crispy and good flavor, the pickle veggies were fresh and refreshing. The nuoc mam/ fish sauce is on the slight saltier side, my personal preference is for it to be sweeter, but thats just me. The side soup was good, it's probably the same soup they use for their pho. Overall I enjoyed the com tam and smash everything, the portion size is big. I'll update my rating from years past to a solid 4/5 and would return. read more

Came here last Friday night because pho ALWAYSSSS HITS THE SPOT. The service here was amazing! Very friendly staff and the food was served quickly! At first I tried the pho and it seemed flavorless, but as I kept eating I began to really enjoy it! The soup stayed hot from beginning to end! It was so hot my rare steak was chewy and I did not enjoy that. But the overall good quality was tasty! It was clean and well kept which I also enjoyed. As soon as I taste the soup, I can kind of guess what comes next. The food portion was small for $20, especially in this area. Right around the corner there is another restaurant that is cheaper, bigger portion and better tasting in my opinion but I have to give credit to their pork chop. Honestly, how disappointing I have to leave this review. I've been here 3 times & each time was more disappointing than the last. Today was my final straw. We sit down and immediately are asked what we would like to order. I place my drink orders and the server is just standing there waiting for me to immediately place my food order. I get it, they want a fast turn around, but let me look at the menu at least. I ask for more time to look for the food, and within one minute, another server is hovering at the table waiting for me to start ordering. For context, I still hadn't received my drinks and we were all still staring at their extensive menu. Relentlessly, I start ordering. I order the grilled pork and shrimp plate and the rest of my party orders their dish. Upon receiving my plate, I have two pieces of shrimp. LOL two? The whole meal, there are 3 - 4 employees standing at an arms distance just waiting for us to finish so they can clean the table and get us out. Fine, no problem, I get it's a small restaurant. But the hell doesn't end there. We are sitting around as 1 employee is at the register eating what looks like a fruit, 3 other employees cleaning other DIRTY tables. They're cleaning dirty dishes, filling up their cart with items that need to be washed, grabbing spray bottles and used towels, and everything in between. Then immediately after they finish cleaning the tables, one employee goes to grab plates of food from the kitchen. He then serves it to the guests sitting next to us. NEVER ONCE WASHING HIS HANDS. The rest of the staff are standing nearby bringing dirty dishes to the kitchen, using their phone, moving CLEAN chili bowls to other tables, etc. EXCEPT FOR WASHING THEIR HANDS. THE ENTIRE TIME I AM HERE, NOT ONE PERSON HAD WASHED THEIR HANDS AND ABOUT 5/6 TABLES GOT CLEANED. After waiting for 15 minutes for someone to stop looking at their phone and joking with one another, I finally flag someone down and ask for a Togo box requesting he washes his hands prior to him handing me the box. I mean I literally watched him carry the basket of filthy dishes to the kitchen. Watched him kick the basket closer to the dishwasher, watched him do everything BUT WASH HIS HANDS. He looked beyond annoyed I even requested such a thing. Oh but it must end there, right? Wrong. I get up to the register to pay my bill, and instead of being assisted, I'm standing there twiddling my thumbs as this employee finishes showing his coworker something on his phone. $60 for the 3 meals. $60 for small portions, awful service, and absolutely no hygiene whatsoever. I thought I was going to order more rice to go with the protein but my kids enjoyed the protein without the extra rice. There was definitely an abundance of protein. My only complaint is that the tau hu ky was not really shrimp paste. It was more of a pork cha. Service was decent. We came right before the lunch rush so we're seated immediately. Popular among the locals, this place serves really really good com tam (broken rice). I was recommended this place by my Vietnamese friend. This place was still super busy on a Wednesday later lunch (around 1pm), where I still needed to wait 15 minutes for a table. Just note that the restaurant is mostly 4-top tables, so if you are a solo diner, you may be paired up with someone to share a table, which is not as awkward as you think as they will set it up so that it is two 2-tops separated by just the napkins and utensils. As long as both parties consent, this will drastically reduce wait times, which was what I did. I got the #41 combo which is super large portions. You could have 1.5 nice meals from just that, but because I was extremely hungry, I got super full from eating the entire plate. The combo also comes with soup and fish sauce. As is the case for most com tam plates, it comes with shredded pork skin, egg cake, and vegetables, on top of BBQ pork, grilled shrimp on sugarcane, fried shrimp cake. The BBQ pork is very flavorful, though kind of slightly charred which is easy to remove those parts. The grilled shrimp is very good - it is like a shrimp paste, and similarly goes for the fried shrimp cake which is a little bit heavy. The broken rice is fairly flavorful. The egg cake and shredded pork skin adds depth and texture to the dish. Service is fast and fairly hands-off, which is very okay for a casual lunch. You pay up front, noting your table number, or in my case because of a shared table, the table number and specifically what you ordered, so they ring you up the correct amount. Overall, this is one of the better com tam restaurants in the Garden Grove / OC area! read more

Yesterday my husband and I were excited to try Com Tam Thien Hao. We ordered #44 - broken rice with Korean style beef ribs, spending about $21. We genuinely wanted to enjoy our meal, but we were surprised by how small the portions were for the price, compared to other Com Tam places in the area. The beef ribs were also extremely salty, to the point where it was hard to finish. I mentioned it politely to a woman who seemed to be the owner or manager, half wearing a black hat, just to share the feedback. Instead of a quick apology or even a simple "I understand," she responded, "You've already eaten it, so what do you want to change?" I wasn't asking for a replacement, and I wasn't trying to get anything out of it. I just wanted to let her know in case other customers feel the same. I just expected a little kindness and professionalism. She said it was marinated that way, then turned away, mumbled something under her breath, and walked inside without saying anything else.
