​I just discovered this authentic Vietnamese restaurant on my Facebook feed and had to check them out. The photos convinced me to make the drive down to Orange County from Rancho Cucamonga, and it was so worth it. This place is seriously incredible--they make their cá kho, thịt kho, and sour soup the exact same way my mom does. The only thing missing in the sour soup are okras. It is unbelievable how good the dishes are, and they came out piping hot. You can genuinely see and taste the freshness in the herbs, fish, and every other ingredient. This is my go to place for Vietnamese comfort food. Every dish is delicious and flavorful. I've been coming here for several years and the flavors and taste is so consistent. They even have great Vietnamese music on too! Service is superb (quick and friendly) and there's often a wait during peak hours. Menu is simple to follow with nice photos. I came here on a Saturday to eat Thit Kho and Rau Muong. The staff is very friendly and restaurant is clean. Plenty of parking outside. The Thit Kho ($12) sauce was very loose and light. Good flavor but it needs to be a bit thicker. The pork was very dry. Although it was tender with large areas of fat, it was still dry. The rau muong ($12) was sautéed in garlic. It didn't lack seasoning. Mixed with the thit Kho, it gave it more flavor. The best price was the steamed rice - perfectly fluffy ($4.00 for a medium size bowl). Hinh Thanh Restaurant located in a plaza and tucked in the middle is a small restaurant is known for the taste of 'serving home-cooked meals'--or at least that's what a few reviews alluded to. Came to try it for myself and really loved the catfish and soup! The space is pretty tight, with about 5-7 tables squeezed into a small dining area. With another family's kid running in circle, bumping into another table and ours several time made the eating experience okay. The small table made it inconvenient if you order multiple dishes as there's little room on the surface of the table left -- oftentimes you have to maneuver dishes, utensils or water around to avoid breaking or dropping items. Hien Thanh Restaurant makes it good-- the flavors are spot on, nothing was overly salty or sweet. You have fresh veggies as well as nicely cooked down one's. Fish, meat, etc. I absolutely loved the stuffed tofu stewed in tomato, it was so delicious with rice. We also tried their artichoke tea, I believe, and it was amazing!! My aunt said it was a little sweet for her, but I thought it was lovely since it was iced and refreshing. The service was good and they have bathrooms available. The restaurant was clean. We got cơm phần gia đình ($39), it's a family-style prix fixe menu for 2 people. You will get to pick 3 dishes: 1 soup dish, 1 savory dish, 1 stir-fried dish and it comes with rice. My family and I have been regular customers here and dine here almost every Sunday. We usually come around noon because the service is quick and there normally isn't a long wait. Unfortunately, today's experience was very disappointing. There were four of us, and my husband simply asked for additional Thai chili and fish sauce. My daughter doesn't eat spicy food, so we asked for three separate servings instead of sharing. The portions of the condiments are already very small. The young man serving us told us that his mom only allows him to give a maximum of two servings of fish sauce and chili per table. My husband was so frustrated that he decided to leave and said he no longer wanted to eat here. It's disappointing to lose regular customers over such a small request. When customers are paying for a meal and politely ask for a reasonable amount of basic condiments to enjoy their food, I don't think it should become an issue. We have supported this restaurant regularly, but unfortunately this experience made us reconsider coming back. read more

Unfortunately they are on the pricier side with their small portions, compared to other restaurants that serve this type of food. Braised Cat Fish (Ca Kho To) (5/5): The catfish fillets are braised in a sweet and savory caramel-y fish sauce. The sauce has the perfect caramelization and balance of flavors, fully penetrating the fish. I even drizzle extra sauce on my rice (it's that good). Sweet & Sour Catfish Soup (Canh Chua Ca) (5/5): A delicious combination of sweet, sour, and salty - a true definition of umami! The soup has fresh pineapple, tomatoes, celery, beansprouts, elephant ear stalks, and catfish. The soup is served in a pot, which keeps it hot throughout the meal. Thit Rim Tom (Caramelized Pork and Shrimp) (3/5): Thinly sliced pork belly and shrimp in a sticky caramelized fish sauce (similar to the one used for the braised catfish). The pork was a little dry with abundant fat pieces. The dish was so-so with small portion sizing - I wouldn't get this again. The shaken beef plate was skimpy. The meat to rice ratio was way off. The grilled pork plate was the same. Not nearly enough meat for the rice. My grandpa put me on to this place -- turns out my parents put him on. Full circle. We always come here for his favorite: Cơm Phần Gia Đình (Family Dinner). You get to choose your dishes -- soup, main, appetizer, etc. The portions are sized by how many people you're feeding. We always get the meal for two even though there are three of us (me and my grandparents), but it's perfect since my grandma doesn't eat much. Our usual lineup: Rau muống xào tỏi (water spinach with garlic) -- extra garlic always. Worth the upcharge. Canh chua -- classic, solid. Cá kho tộ (caramelized braised catfish) -- this is why we come back. It's done so well here, better than most other spots. Rich, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth kind of good. They also give you a side of white rice, of course. Service is quick, staff speaks both English and Vietnamese, and it seems like everyone in the restaurant is always ordering the same set. My parents were craving the Vietnamese Family Style meal, Com Phan Gia Dinh, and they had heard about Hien Thanh from one of their friends. We came for an early lunch on a Saturday and found that the parking was hectic and interior of the restaurant was cramped. The layout was probably an afterthought to the builders squeezing out every random square footage to sell or lease off. Don't expect any ambiance here. You basically seat yourself and they'll bring out some menus. The layout of the menu needs as much care as the layout of the restaurant. A lot of random spacing resulting in extra pages. Photos stuck on randomly without any flow. Very old school. We all started off with drinks. My mom had their Rau Ma ($5.50), a pennywort drink, she didn't complain so I'll assume it was sufficient. My dad had a Ca Phe Sua Da ($4.00), a Vietnamese iced coffee that was MORE ICE than coffee. Within 2 sips his coffee was gone. What a rip off. I ordered a Sam Bo Luong ($5.50) a longan mixed herb drink that for some reason came in a small plastic cup, despite my parents drinks coming in glasses for dine-in. So tackyyyyy. As for our meal, we got the Com Phan Gia Dinh we sought out to eat. With 2 nguoi, or 2 people, portion includes 1 canh, 1 man, 1 xao for $37.50. In correlating order in English, that is a soup, a protein, and a stir fry. It also comes with rice included. If you're alone you can order these items a la carte for $11.50/each. There isn't too much of a deal ordering the meal, compared to other restaurants where the family meal is usually a better deal than a la carte. We opted for the Canh Chua Ca, Ca Kho To, and Rau Muong Xao Toi. Canh Chua Ca is a tamarind fish soup. They really sliced up all the ingredients which made the dish lose texture, and they did not have okra so something felt lacking. The ca kho to, or braised fish, came a bit dry and shrived. In general I feel like we've had better quality and taste at other places. The rau muong xao toi is a Vietnamese water spinach stir fried with garlic. It was a bit oily, and not that garlicky at all. I think I got more garlic in the tamarind fish soup. Honestly I'm surprised my mom's friend recommended such a mediocre restaurant. We left feeling not hungry but not satisfied. My dad literally asked if I want to pick up some braised fish from another spot. I'm not sure we'd be back. The parking was really cramped and inconvenient without a worthy upside. read more
