Pho Saigon is a midtown staple for authentic Vietnamese. Definitely a no frills kind of spot, situated in a small plaza off of Milam Street, the restaurant is a reliable favorite for takeout and casual dining. While the service gets the job done, don't expect extras. The menu has just about everything you would expect from familiar favorites - fresh spring rolls, many varieties of beef noodle soup (pho bò), seafood noodle soup, vegetarian noodle soup (pho chay), vermicelli, rice plates, and banh mi, all at reasonable prices. Oh and do not forgot the Vietnamese iced coffee, which can be prepared classic with condensed milk, or just black if you have any dairy sensitivity (I'm a crazy person and bring my own non-dairy condensed milk). While Pho Saigon isn't the absolute best, it's good and offers a lot of vegetarian options, which can sometimes be hard to find. My personal favorites are the pho chay, tofu banh mi, and fried tofu vermicelli. I've eaten here now many of times and will definitely continue to visit. Signing off now until the next banh mi! I went with some friends to grab a bowl of pho due to the cold weather. The broth and the bowl of pho was absolutely delicious. Perfect spot to go when craving pho. The servers were friendly. There was lots of space inside and lots of people. There were plenty of families but also people who were enjoying their meals on their own. Pho Saigon has potential, but it fell a little short for me. The pho broth is tasty, but also thin. It doesn't have the thick, hearty, fatty feel of a good pho broth. I also ordered the vermicelli with egg rolls, but the vermicelli noodles themselves seemed a little off - almost as if they were too old? The fish sauce was very heavy and didn't have quite enough vinegar, it seems. The egg rolls in the vermicelli are quite small. My dining buddy ordered the steamed rice with charbroiled chicken, and while the food tasted good on his end, the portion was relatively small for the cost. Service was extremely fast, waiters did not harass you, and paying was quick and easy by bringing your tab to the cashier. For ambiance and service, Pho Saigon receives 5 stars. There is so much to love or even just like when it comes to Pho Saigon. As someone who knew and fondly remembers the old Little Saigon during its heyday, it's easy to wax nostalgic about the Vietnamese business community when it was much stronger in Midtown. If you remember old favorite haunts like Vietnam Restaurant, Les Givrals, Van Loc, the old Mai's before the fire and Hoa Binh supermarket, you can probably appreciate the sentiment. This part of town is so different now, with a lot more residential and commercial development in the area. What has gotten lost in the mix, though, is the original character of the neighborhood. Much of the credit for that character should go to the Vietnamese American business owners who kept the area going regardless of demographic changes, economic downturns and myriad other challenges. Pho Saigon, simply put, is a neighborhood gem, and I hope it stays in the area forever...if that's possible. I am one of those people who sticks to Phở Tái and Phở Gà, when I should really a bit more adventurous. What I really like to order from Pho Saigon is Phở Tái. Although the broth isn't the best nor my favorite, what inspires me about this Pho is how fresh and high quality the ingredients are. You can tell the owners really care about not only the presentation, but the quality. And it shows. The Phở Tái here is so delicious. I like to add as much of the mung bean sprouts, basil and sliced jalapeño as I can to the bowl. Solid 3 stars. I used to go to the location off of Hollister near 290 years ago. That was my go to for Vietnamese food back in the day. Now that I'm in downtown, I decided to give them a try. Their service here is top-notch. My food came out instantly. The customer service is great. Everyone that works Here is very friendly. Food: again the food came out extremely fast, which was pretty cool. The egg roll was simply amazing. The fried egg was good as well. The white rice was good. The fish sauce was good. Even the broth that came out with the meal was simply amazing. Now this is where the three stars begin. The beef was good, but there were several pieces that were very tough. I mean, they weren't even edible. It was almost like it was very different kind of meat compared to the other pieces. With the beef beef and so inconsistent how to drop two stars. It's almost like it's been sitting there all day or something. Make my beef fresh. Don't bring it out within seconds. There's no way that beef could've been made fresh because it came out within two minutes or less. I get it. You're trying to prepare because you want to serve people quick but you're selling yourself short by serving beef that's been sitting all day long. That's where the two stars were lost. This has been a staple in my life for almost 19 years. It may not look like much from the outside but I appreciate that it has plentiful parking, a surface parking lot, a garage, and on the street. It's nice and spacious inside, and the staff is always quick to get you seated, and so attentive. A couple of decades ago, Midtown was one of the few neighborhoods in Houston that was a legit Asian ethnic enclave. Fast forward to the present, there are only a few Vietnamese businesses left, which includes Pho Saigon. After opening its doors just over 25 years ago, they've been a steady destination for pho ever since and one of the more iconic businesses in the area. While it might not look like much from the outside, the interior is surprisingly super spacious with a sea of chairs and tables in every direction. The lunch time crowd is usually a bit more intense on good weather days, but far more drab during their dinner service and weekend hours. The food is probably around 3.5 for me overall. The more unmemorable items include their limp goi cuon, somewhat lackluster bun thit nuuong and a very uneventful banh mi, but the pho dac biet was surprisingly hearty with an abundance of meats and a clear but fragrant broth. I also strangely appreciated the extra long cha gio (#1) and felt their caphe sua da had just the right amount of sweetness and caffeine. The service works fast and they're good about accommodating all party sizes. Parking in the dedicated lot is tough on regular days, so street parking might be necessary. Prices are solid for the area and the takeout / delivery is impressive. A few of my friends wanted pho and they were recommending this spot in midtown. It was mostly empty for a weekday so we got seated and ordered right away. I got a small meatball and rare steak pho. You can get the bean sprouts steamed upon request as well as some chili oil. For a small, my bowl was still really big and filled me up, they put in a lot of noodles and meat. With the weather approaching freezing temps this week, you bet I'm going to seek out one of my fave cold weather foods! Despite the place being busier than usual, we got seated pretty quickly. They have a fairly extensive menu with plenty of chicken, beef, and vegetable based pho broths so very inclusive. We got two different types of beef-based pho, shrimp spring rolls, salted lemon drink, and green tea. The pho came out within a reasonable time along with the drinks. The pho was exactly what we needed to stay warm and prepare for the incoming freeze! We got a generous portion of rich, deep flavorful pho. It was so delicious!! The salted lemon drink was new for me and was initially a nice contrast to the pho but, personally, got to be a bit too much for me. Only complaint was that our spring rolls were completely forgotten until after we finished our pho and we had to remind the staff who luckily brought it out before we left. Returned here to meet up an old friend in the area while we were craving something a little fresher and lighter than the TexMex food we've been eating. I was excited to come back since my first and last review made this place sound so good (I admit I totally forgot about this place since then haha). I didn't want to, but was so put off by the beef that I asked to replace it with some other meat. They hesitantly obliged, and gave me a side of shrimp, which was better, but they were a tad small. Googled lied to me about how my original dining destination, Siu Lap City, was open today when it was actually shuttered for the Lunar New Year holiday. But rather feel sorry for myself, I decided to try Pho Saigon a few feet away. Good things happen when you least expect them to. Tucked away in the Mekong Center on Milam near Louisiana, Pho Saigon presents itself as a simple, no frills Vietnamese restaurant. Sure, it has pho in its name, but to get acquainted with this place, I helped myself to my go-to: a chargrilled pork rice plate. I liked my meal. It was well put together and tasted really nice. The vegetables were crisp and fresh, and the meat melt in your mouth tender and succulent. If only there was more portions wise. I do blame myself for not ordering any appetizers as there was some potentially good ones on the menu. Maybe next time.
