Last week, I went to Sunnyvale to pickup a Santa Run race packet and brought my girlfriend with me since we don't typically come to this area and she had me choose between this place and Korean for lunch. I chose Korean, because I swear by the pho in East San Jose, as we all should. But we found ourselves back in the area, and I figured we should try this place out. Now, I generally avoid pho places that have a pretty corny name like this, but at the end of the day, I'm glad I came, but that isn't to say there isn't much to be desired. In fact, while the food is solid, there's a lot more to this place that'll raise an eyebrow. Parking was weird. There were maybe four to five spaces in the small strip lot dedicated to this eatery, while most of the rest were for the adjacent grocery store. I went ahead and took a chance--there's no way anybody would actually call a towing company on a cold Bay Area evening after 8pm, right? Service was weird too. The server looked confused, and then when we were seated, we were told the kitchen would be closed in five minutes, so basically the guy told us to hurry up. I also noticed a big sign on every table that said all debit and credit purchases would incur a merchant fee of 3.5%. Look, I understand that restaurants need to make tough decisions to make ends meet, but this is ludicrous. First of all, a charge for debit? Not only are you charging your customer more, they're losing more because they're using debit anyway. And then with credit--I get it, there are fees, but 3.5% is literal robbery. Most premium credit cards with multipliers for food only get 3x points or 3% cash back at the most. This restaurant is charging MORE than a premium for convenience. That's beyond lame, and this is going to be a reason why Pho Lovers will never be a main pho recommendation from me no matter how good it is. I almost didn't want to tip because of this. Lack of card justice aside, the food is decent. Good even, but also on the weird side. I ordered the Pho Lovers Noodle Soup, specifically because it had oxtail in it. That's an instant win for me, but I also didn't notice that it didn't come with flank, tendon, and brisket. I should've ordered the 12 and added oxtail, but I'll be more careful next time. I also ordered the spicy lemongrass tofu, which was good, but I couldn't taste the lemon grass. These are damn near ramen prices for pho, so if you can't get to San Jose--then yeah, this is a more than decent spot, but again, this service fee will definitely be a red flag for people that really understand credit card spend. read more

Located in a strip mall with weirdly restrictive parking rules all over, Pho Lovers is a standard pho place that serves, you guessed it, pho and other Vietnamese dishes. Vietnamese is pretty hard to come by in Sunnyvale for some reason, but this place serves up some pretty good pho. It's not phenomenal, like you'd get in East San Jose, but it scratches that pho itch if you have it. Their meats are prepared well, the portions are pretty large, even if you order a small, and their soup isn't too cloudy (I mean, it is, but it still rings true of pho broth. It's not messed up or anything). Their prices are, well, Sunnyvale-esque as well, but you can't have it all. One thing I do like is that they offer the fresh flat noodles, but for a $1 more it's again a bit steep haha (I swear I'm not a miser, it's just jarring!) Given the ongoing COVID-induced shortages, they did not have ox tail in stock when we came on a Saturday for lunch, so they may not have everything on the menu. Prices are overall a little higher than preferred, but this is likely due to the ongoing pandemic circumstances. Service: 3.5/5 There was no wait when we arrived at around 12:45 PM on a Saturday. Someone working tables saw us and pointed us to an open booth as we arrived. We were not attended to aside from being brought menus and the food itself. While I didn't run out of water while we were eating, if I had, I would probably have needed to flag someone down to get a refill. To pay, you have to go up to the counter where they will ring you up vs. being brought a check. This didn't factor into the overall rating, but just something to note so you don't wait there for a long time waiting for someone to bring you a check. Environment: 4/5 They played looping massage parlor-like music, which was nice and relaxing. It's a short loop though so the same tune keeps going. I don't come across good pho in SF so I didn't know what to expect from this spot but whoa the pho here was so good! I got flashbacks of having pho in Vietnam. I enjoyed everything about the pho especially the flat wide rice noodles. The soup was flavorful and not too oily and I enjoyed the combination of meats. The nem nuong spring roll was pretty dang good too! I've had a bunch of nem nuong egg rolls but never had it where the crunchy stick in the egg roll was still crunchy. Overall, really good. This place has been a favorite for a long time. Not sure if management changed but it sure seems like it. We ordered 4 bowls of Pho one was supposed to have tendon and it was nowhere to be found. It had one piece for a large bowl. Of course we nicely asked if we could have more and the waiter called what seemed to be the manager. Once the manager came he asked for proof of how much tendon wed gotten? Have never been asked such odd question. Of course we had eaten it already so we had nothing to show and he seemed skeptical. As if we would lie about having tendon? He eventually brought us one piece that the chef sent but still weird and hostile attitude. We also asked for it to have no onions and they all came with them. This was my first time having Pho, and it was just perfect! I did quite a bit of research to get the most authentic Vietnamese Pho in the area, and I'm definitely happy with the choice. I got the Phở Tái with the chicken broth, and asked to replace the noodles with extra bean sprouts. This turned out just amazing! There meat was just perfect, and so was the broth. Not at all salty as I thought it would be - and I'm quite sensitive to salty foods. This was an online order and I also called them over the phone to request a replacement of the beef broth with chicken, and they were happy to comply. Quite friendly people. I got PHOsitive food vibes from this PHO place, it felt like eating heart warming food from grandma's house. The food tasted good, better than the other two Pho places I usually go to. We ordered Spring Rolls, Pho Combo Special, and Pork Garlic Noodles. The Spring roll is fresh and has shrimp and thin strips of pork, with a good amount of noodles. The sauce also tasted good. The Combo Special has a mild Pho broth, but the combination of meat added enough flavors to it. I like the meat fats there, too. The Pork Garlic Noodles is also good, very tasty. The price of the food is relatively reasonable. The place is a bit outdated, but has the authentic feels of old Asian restaurant and it seems well kept. Parking was a bit difficult outside on mid day Saturday. They seat every other table for social distancing. Overall, a nice Pho experience. Had the steak and brisket pho but with yellow noodles. The pho broth was beefy in taste, not too salty, less sweet than other pho restaurants. You can taste the combination of spices giving the broth good umami flavor. Both the steak and brisket were of very good quality, tender and cleaner taste. I've had pho from other places with the meat tasting old, gamy or freezer burnt. So I appreciated Pho Lovers having better meat quality. They have one of the best fried rolls in the area. Rolls were full of well seasoned meat filling and crispy on the outside. The fried roll wrapper was not too thick which made it crispy without having to deal with thick chewy wrapper when trying to take a bite. They're not stingy on ingredients. I really love that there's a nearby pho place near home when I'm working from home. I ordered thru doordash so it does charge you a little more than in person. The food was ready by the time I got there (within 5-10mins) and pick up area is clean. Parking get's alittle busy because of the super market next door. There's still no dine in option. The people there are friendly. I gave them a less star cause I paid $5.50 for a Vietnamese coffee and they didn't fill it up all the way. (Photo attached) so i asked if they could fill it alittle bit more. The guy kept making excuse that "oh, it's just like that.....cause....." and then he pour just alittle more. It'll be nice if they weren't stingy with their drinks. Most of the time I get a cup of for their coconut drink or coffee and it's FULL of ice. Less liquids and not even full cup. So yeah. Very stingy on their drinks. Food though is good! I ordered their lean brisket pho and they give alot of noodles that I usually cut in half and save for next lunch. They do package everything neatly. First time to visit this restaurant . The restaurant is located inside a small shopping center with very limited and tight parking space . We were there around 1pm and we spent over 10 mins for a space. Once we sit down we saw a big sign mention extra charge (3.5%) on credit / debit card payment. Ah , ok . That means cash only :( We ordered small beef noodle soup and fried tofu . i was surprise that the deep fried tofu was actually use the pre fried tofu ( 豆腐卜) to make it . Those were cheap tofu , and definitely the tofu was not "crispy outside but soft inside " disappointed The beef noodle soup : the soup base was kind of having a sweet flavor , kind of like msg like sweet instead , and the beef was extremely dry with ZERO flavor , felt like those beef had been used for soup . I choose yellow noodle and the noodle was too soft . Service was quick. I got number 14 small and honestly it could've been better. It was below average. However my biggest issue was how they charged me as seen in the photo. I understand that since I was using card I was getting charged a card fee. The waitress (who was wearing a Spartans visor) informed us that there is a 15% gratuity for 5 or more guests (near the end) even though we are separate! But when I got the receipt, I ended up getting an absurd amount. The number 14 small is $13.75. For some reason, the base amount was $17.26! Even with Sunnyvale taxes considered it should only add up to around $15. That didn't even include the card fee. I even tipped an EXTRA 15% because I didn't realize that it was probably on the price already even though it was BASE price. Highly misleading. I placed an online order. Soon after I placed it, they called letting me know they weren't able to make it due to insufficient ingredients. I was in search of a Vietnamese restaurant near my work cause I had this craving for a grilled chicken with rice, and Yelp had this as top tier in the area. Called in to do a pick up order and the lady I talked to (who I'm guessing might be the owner/manager) took my order down and even gave me a time suggestion on when they'd start cooking it to make sure my food wasn't cold since i didn't know how fast I was going to get there. I thought that was very thoughtful and nice, since I'm sure most spots would just take the order and have you pick up whenever you come by. Came in, picked up my food which was ready just as I walked in, came back to work and yeah, I was pretty impressed with the portion sizing. Pretty big portions, chicken was nice and grilled, rice was soft, came with the tomato and cucumber and that sauce I never know the name of. I also ordered the Vietnamese coffee for my drink, which was pretty dang good as well. I was really happy I came across this place even though I pass by the plaza all the time. HIGHLY SKETCHY ESTABLISHMENT TO AVOID My recent visit to Pho Lovers was, to put it mildly, deeply disappointing. As a regular restaurant goer, I've had my share of varied dining experiences, but it's rare to find a place that misses the mark on almost every conceivable level. From the quality of the food to the service and pricing, Pho Lovers left much to be desired. Starting with the food, my family and I ordered two veggie pho, veggie fried rice, along with salty lemon soda, Thai ice tea, and green tea. The quality of the food was shockingly poor. The veggie pho, a dish known for its rich and aromatic broth, was lackluster. The broth and vegetables were bland, lacking the depth of flavor one expects from a well-made pho. The veggie fried rice was another disappointment. Not only was it orange in color, but it was also virtually empty of any ingredients that would justify its name. Worse still, it was served lukewarm. When we requested it be heated properly, it was clear from the taste and the manager's response that it had merely been microwaved, without any effort to enhance its flavor, even by something as simple as adding salt. The service compounded the already poor experience. The staff seemed uninterested and unenthusiastic, serving us with sullen expressions that suggested serving customers was a chore rather than a part of their job. This lack of hospitality made the dining experience even more unpleasant. Finally, the pricing and additional charges were the icing on an already unpalatable cake. Being charged a 3.5% service fee for using a debit card is questionable, to say the least. Moreover, a mysterious $5 surcharge was added to our bill for being seated in a "good booth," a justification that seemed nothing short of ludicrous. In summary, Pho Lovers is a place I would strongly advise against visiting, especially for those in search of authentic Pho. The Sunnyvale and Santa Clara areas are home to many excellent establishments where the food is authentic, the service is delivered with a smile, and the prices are fair, without any hidden charges. Do yourself a favor and seek out these places instead, where your patronage will be appreciated and rewarded with a satisfying dining experience. read more

Turns out the takeout experience is just as good as dining in. We ordered 2 vegetarian vermicelli bowls, extra egg rolls, spring rolls, and garlic noodles. What??? I told you it was my birthday - we needed a celebratory meal and it's only the second time getting takeout in 9+ weeks of cooking at home. All the food was delicious and fresh. Spring rolls were still crispy when we got home. The biggest thing I appreciate is the tofu to noodle ratio. There is no skimping on the amount of protein you get here (especially nice since the grocery stores have been out of tofu for weeks)!! So impressed, and we'll be back for more! I looooove Vietnamese food and had a craving. Since we were out running errands, I had my husband find us a place to grab lunch while we were out and about. He selected this spot, and I'm glad he did! We started with some super fresh summer rolls with a delicious peanut dipping sauce. I then got the vegetarian noodle bowl (bun chay). The flavors were on point. The lemongrass tofu was crisp and slightly spicy (I got more pepper sauce on the side). The spring roll was just the right amount of greasy. Nothing better than a big bowl of chicken pho ga on any day, right? And even better if it's packed full of right flavors and seasoned perfectly? I think so too! I love chicken pho and don't eat pork and beef so this was more than perfect for me. The noodles were nice and chewy and the broth was boiling hot and full marks for the lovely boiled chicken in it packed full of fresh flavors from making it in house. Just a soothing bowl of pho full of chicken, broth, fried onions (juat a few), green onions and noodles. DELICIOUS! Moving on from the beautiful tale of the most amazing chicken noodle soup, their seafood and pork pho that my husband had was also great. My husband tasted both our pho broths and said that they both tasted different. So a win win! We also ordered their garlic noodles with chicken and it had amazing amount of huge chunks of chicken thighs in it. The chicken was sauteed perfectly and was juicy and moist. However, the whole dish was sweet. It had great flavor but it was sweet, something I don't prefer normally and definitely would want to try a different entree next time. The service was great and our server was very cordial and cleaned our booth promptly when we said we needed a booth and not a table. I really like the Pho Lovers combination #11 here. The meat is all tasty especially the ox tail and meatballs. The large is only a dollar more and it's definitely filling. I ordered takeout/delivery and got Grilled Pork Rolls (Nem Nuong) and #12 Combo Special Soup. I always end up comparing pork rolls to OC Brodard's. This version also had the crunchy piece, pickled veggies and an orange dipping sauce. Verdict: Not bad! Unfortunately just two rolls but at least you get decently large pork pieces. The Pho combo was enjoyable. The broth was tasty, good spices, all meats super tender, and noodles weren't under or overcooked. I would definitely order from here again. First time eating at Pho Lovers and I'll probably order from here again if I'm in the neighborhood. Whenever I try a new Vietnamese restaurant I usually try the vermicelli with any of the grilled proteins. I ordered the grilled pork, shrimp, egg roll w/ vermicelli and ice coffee. The portions were comparable to other vietnamese restaurants but a few pieces of the pork was like jerky. However, the rest of the meal was delicious and fresh. We went here for dinner. The order consisted of Hu Tieu / Mi Tom Cua Dac Biet (Kho / Nuoc): We ordered the soup. This is the pho with seafood and pork. The seafood was delicious and the meat was tender. The broth had very good flavor and the noodles tasted good as well. Pho Ga: The chicken pho was delicious. The meat was tender and tasted exceptional. The noodles were great too. We ordered both the above entrees extra hot and the staff promptly obliged. We ordered large portions and one entree should suffice per person. Nevertheless we had to try their noodles. Mi Xao Toi Ga Nuong: This garlic noodle entree is a good one. to share. It's probably not enough for one person. It was a bit sweet to our taste but was well done and seasoned perfectly. We also tried ordering Pho ga for take out. While the taste was similar (great) the quantity did not match what we got for dine in. If you are getting take out the pho and the ingredients that go into it are packed in separate containers. Ambience: It is a decent sized establishment with lot of open spaces. They have large booths along with the usual tables and chairs. The cutlery is in a stand on every table. The service is very quick and you sever will be at your table to take your order in a couple of minutes. If you are a first time visiter you'll need to request they come back again.
