Still a bit tired from the cross-country flight, I wanted something restorative. Noodle soup. Broth. Something that could put me back together. San Jose alone is home to close to 150,000 Vietnamese residents, the largest Vietnamese population of any city outside Vietnam. That influence extends throughout Santa Clara County and the surrounding Silicon Valley area. There's no shortage of Vietnamese restaurants, Chinese noodle shops, and ramen joints here, but many of them are in shiny new developments with equally shiny prices. I don't believe in bougie noodle soup. And if I had to fight for parking again today, there was going to be a problem. Pho Nam in Sunnyvale, just a stone's throw from some of the most valuable tech companies on the planet, sits in an old, beat-up strip mall with a 7-Eleven, a liquor store, and a seedy sports bar. Inside, it looks like a pho restaurant preserved from another era: green vinyl chairs, fluorescent lights, patterned tile floors, floral plates, and a glowing neon NAM sign behind the counter. Pure utilitarian noodle shop. Nothing designed for Instagram. I ordered the cha gio and a small rare beef pho. The beef came thinly sliced on a separate plate so I could add it to the steaming broth myself. The egg rolls were crisp and generously packed with glass noodles, dried mushrooms, and carrots, giving the filling a pleasant sweetness. The pho was exactly what I needed: clear but deeply flavored beef-bone broth, aromatic with warm spices, then amplified with jalapeños, bean sprouts, lime, and fragrant purple Thai basil. Pho Nam is one of my favorite pho place in the area. I am a frequent (usually during the work week lunch time). I typically order the house special combination pho (#1) and the pho and meats taste fresh and great (definitely not those pre frozen fast food like ones). The service is great too. Even during the busy time during the week day lunch, they are able to serve in a timely fashion. The restaurant has been in that strip mall for a long time. The strip mall itself doesn't look too good, but Pho Nam is definitely a gem read more

We randomly found it on google and decided to check it out because it was close by. *WAIT TIME* We had a late lunch on a Saturday ~1:30pm. The restaurant is very spacious inside and there were only a few tables occupied so we got seated right away. *FOOD* Fried egg rolls: piping hot and fresh, very crispy and yum~ Pho w/ steak and fatty brisket: this was my first time being able to specifically order fatty brisket, it was sooooo good!! *SERVICE* Our waiters were friendly and took our order quickly. They came to check on us during the meal and offer us more water. No complaints here :) *AMBIENCE* This restaurant is the typical Vietnamese place you think of. I usually get their pho tai chin nam, the broth is good and portion size is appropriate. Other favorite dishes are bun thit Nuong (grilled pork and cold noodles) and the Bo kho (beef stew). Since moving to Sunnyvale, I decided to explore local options and stumbled upon this unassuming pho restaurant near my home. The exterior isn't flashy, but it gave off a very authentic, Vietnam-street-vendor vibe that immediately caught my attention. To my surprise, this was the only pho place I've come across in over 30 years in the Bay Area that also includes Korean language on the menu--a rare and interesting find. Even more surprising? The pho here was not only delicious but also more affordable than Pho Kim Long and most others in the area. The quality held up just as well, if not better. Honestly, it was very good. Enjoyed my early weekday dinner at Pho Nam. The atmosphere was cozy and lowkey, and everyone else around us seemed to also be enjoying the food and atmosphere. They have a pretty extensive selection of items. I ordered the small #1 which was the perfect portion for me. Food came out super quick. The meat was thin and had good texture, and the broth was deep in flavor and savoriness. I like that they also do a drink + entree combo option, and might come back to try their drinks. We also ordered the eggrolls (2pcs) and I like that they use a slightly different wrap than traditional eggrolls. Seems they take cash for orders under $20 (as of this review). Service was quick and friendly. There were zero issues parking in the plaza lot. Honestly I've been looking for a good local pho spot and while there aren't as many options as the SJ VN town area, I'd say this is a pretty decent option in Sunnyvale. I am simple & just got Pho Tai. The broth was very flavorful and the steak was fresh. I got a small at $16 or so and it was the perfect amount. Also got spring rolls. They were ok. Pho nam is a small hole in the wall right next to AMC Mercado. The cashier lets you pay separately for splitting up credit cards so its nice. The pho is pretty standard san jose Pho but the waiters are nicer and more accommodating. Parking is limited in front but if you park on the side theres plenty of parking. It's been a while since we've come here for lunch. The place is still the same with old attentive service, delicious pho and great price. The pho broth is always flavorful and plentiful with meats and noodles. The prices have gone up but still less expensive than many restaurants around. For lunch with time is the essence, the food delivered quite quickly. I love this place and only come here if I need a hot bowl of pho. For 2 people is less than $30 including tax. I ordered the spring rolls, I got two for $4.55. It reminded me of how my friend's mom made them, which was perfect. I ate it so fast that I didn't even take a picture. I did order the beef stew with noodles. You can choose from bread, noodles, or rice. The noodles is like pho noodles. The soup was delicious and full of flavor. The broth and the soup was meaty. Also, the carrots was soft. I asked for extra onions and cilantro because I like a lot of it. The price for my meal was only $20. I'm pretty impressed for being in the Bay Area. It was a Friday at about 6PM and we walked in and there were only two tables occupied, so we were seated right away. The person whom greeted us at the door took our drink orders as he seated us and handed us our menus. My husband ordered a large seafood pho. I ordered a small bowl of meatball pho and an order of spring roll. Food came out pretty fast. Broth was everything you need pho to be. Ingredients were fresh. Produce was vibrant in color and you are served plenty. I requested some sliced onions in vinegar and added some hoison and sriracha to it to enjoy with every bite. The only off putting this about this last visit was that the back door to the restaurant was open and there was people smoking out back. We could smell it the entire time, so it kind of messed with our meal. I don't know if it was workers from the restaurant or if it was from patrons/employees from the bar next door. As for the service, they've always treated me well. As soon as I walk in, I get seated and taken care of. I've even had waiters and waitress give a little extra when I order. They always check up and are very attentive if you get a table. The place us older, and it seems lke a hole in the wall, but the abiance is nice. It's homey. Since I live just a 5min walk, I tend to take the food to go. But when I do eat there it feels homey. Pho Nam is a great Vietnamese place to hit up if you're around. Pho is my fiancé's go-to comfort food, and Pho Nam is THE most comfortable of all the pho places in the South Bay for us. First of all....the prices here for pho are some of the very lowest in the area. It's actually hard to find a place with large pho bowls priced under $15 and I think a large here is still somewhere around $12 which is crazy! The pho is always delicious and super reliable! I will be the first to admit that I'm not the most discerning of pho eaters but my fiancé is, and he's always super happy with a #5 large (one of the few pho options on the menu without rare steak). Lastly, the staff here is always friendly and sweet. One time we called for takeout ~5 minutes before closing and they said they would still take our order even though we live ~15 min away. When we got there, the door was still propped open because they were waiting for us to come. We were so touched! We will happily keep Pho Nam in business as long as they're around! read more
