I was seated as soon as I entered the establishment. I ordered the grilled pork spring rolls as an appetizer. They were really tasty, especially with the peanut sauce. For my entree, I ordered the small seafood pho bowl. My server brought it out in less than 10 minutes. The bowl was hot and tasted exactly as it looked, delicious. Pho Dan has reputedly the best pho in North Austin. This time however, we sampled the vermicelli bowls. I got the #43b which had the pork skin, charbroiled pork, topped over a wholesome bed of vermicelli and lettuce on the bottom. The pork was quite flavorful. My wife got the #42a with charbroiled chicken. The chicken was surprisingly quite most and juicy. Vermicelli wasn't our favorite and we were wanting some more vegetables/herbs mixed in to the bowl (the basil could have been upped). Overall a solid bowl but just a bit bland, which was quickly remedied by a splash of Sriracha and hoisin sauce. Ultimately a good vermicelli bowl to get full on, but from a look around the room, the pho bowls were the crowd favorites. Go for that next time! read more

I like Pho Dan well enough. I don't really enjoy eating here, but I can see ordering for take out in the future. The place is impeccably clean and sometimes smells a bit too much of disinfectant. I know this isn't bad, but it isn't appetizing either. Each time I've come here, several tables were occupied, but the place was far from busy. That said the wait staff, as nice and attentive as they are, seem to stand around (in plain view) watching your every move until they see you need something. This would also not necessarily be a bad thing, but when they are watching you from less than ten feet away, it's a little bit much. My go to order is vermicelli with tofu and vegetables mainly because I cannot make the vermicelli noodles myself. This dish is okay. There's not much seasoning on anything so I always have to use the fish sauce, which I don't really care for. Veggies are always crispy and fresh. I do love the spring rolls with the peanut sauce. Those I can eat for days! I haven't ventured outside of my vermicelli and spring rolls, but I am looking forward to trying some other dishes. Disappointing take out on most recent visit. Will probably try a different place next time. Asked for extra sprouts and basil plus usual condiments for my pho on my to go order. Went in to pick up and grabbed the bag but asked for a couple more. Guy hooked it up with a small bag. Got home. Opened bag and containers. No sprouts or condiments for the pho. @$#*. I used the small bag of sprouts I asked for when I picked up, glad I did because otherwise I'd be eating just noodles and beef. Cut up a jalapeño and ate my meal sad and disappointed with no basil or siracha or hoisen sauce. I'd be totally okay with them charging extra if that's what it takes to get my order how I want it. I've been coming here for years and had loved it but the last handful of times I've gone the spring rolls are cold, the staff is so mean. Especially the lady owner. Always consistent and delicious. The grilled chicken is my favorite for the rice or vermicelli dishes. The husband loves getting the large pho dac biet (has all the meats!). When he's super hungry, he opts for the extra large bowl. Holy moly, it's HUGE! In Vietnamese it's called the train bowl bc it's so big lol. I greatly appreciate that their cafe sua da is still the old fashioned drip coffee instead of that premade stuff that they just pour over ice when you order it. Having recently moved here and growing up in Little Saigon all my life I'm conflicted on the star rating here because the pho broth here was decent, not bad. The broth was clear, the noodles were decent, and the protein amount was decent. I have no complaints although nothing really stood out. I would go here if I needed Pho in a pinch since they are pretty close to me. The Hieu Tieu however shouldn't even be on the menu. The seafood you could tell was previously frozen, there wasn't your traditional sauce, and the noodles were stuck together. The portion size on the seafood was small but it wasn't a big deal I guess because it wasn't good anyways. The Bun Bo Hue was pretty much the same as the Hieu Tieu. Service was fast at first but to get our check a quite bit longer than it should. Eating at a Vietnamese restaurant I understand I shouldn't expect steakhouse service so I am grading their service accordingly. Moral of the story, go here for the Pho but skip their Hieu Tieu and BBH. Ba ngoai (grandma) would be disappointed. read more

I will start this out with the disclaimer that I might be biased towards this place since it is within walking distance of my offices new spot. We have been at this location for under a year so far, and I have made a weekly pilgrimage across the parking lot to Pho Dan. Sometimes twice a week. The service here when I normally go at lunch is phenomenal. It is rare I have to ask for water or anything extra. In the late evening I have noticed that it isn't quite as attentive. It is also next to a nail salon, so if you go in the after work hours when the salon is full of people getting their nails done, there can be a nail polish remover odor in the air. But that seems to go away as soon as your bowl of pho arrives. The soup comes in 3 sizes. Normal Large Extra Large I have had the normal and wanted more, but I have only once finished a large and not taken some home. It is truly large. ( Left over pho I think is delicious, so getting the large is perfect for me.) I haven't seen anyone order the extra large, although the lunch waiter has tempted me a few times. If its double the size of the large like he implied that would easily feed 4 people. Broth is the most important part of the pho experience and this place does not disappoint. It has a good flavor, not overly clove or sweet. Not too oily, but you will know there is some there. The proteins have all been good, even the meatballs which can be hit or miss at other pho places. I normally ask for the addition of carrots and broccoli in my soup. Its only about a buck to do, so well worth it to get in the extra veg. TLDR: Good solid pho place for lunch. Service during slow times operate at speeds of other businesses during busy times. So expect to not even be acknowledged when busy. I've given this place a try 4 times and am giving up. Pho is good, but everything else is hit or miss and inconsistent. Twice the place had an intolerable smell, like paint or potent plastic. My most recent (and final) visit, over half the tables were open, several dirty, and not even eye contact to seat me or the 9 other people behind me standing at the door. After 15 minutes, I finally asked why they weren't seating anyone, got a blank stare, and left. DONT EVER EAT HERE. This place definitely has the best Chicken Noodle Soup in the Austin/Round Rock area! There are always plenty of tables each time we come and the service is typically quite fast. This time, we decided to order the Chicken Noodle Soup and the Vermicelli Bowl with Charbroiled Sliced Beef. Our dishes arrived relatively quickly since we came on a non-busy Sunday night. The Chicken Noodle Soup was extremely delicious, perfectly seasoned, and had a good portion size for the price. The chicken pieces were also seasoned, which were usually not at other Pho restaurants we've tried. We ordered our bowl with the yellow noodles, which paired perfectly with the soup. The Vermicelli Bowl came with a small bowl of seasoning on the side to add to the dish just how you like it. The charbroiled beef pieces were nice and tender, and came with plenty of veggies and vermicelli. The reason we're giving this place 4 stars is because their regular Pho Noodle Soup is not as good as the Chicken Noodle Soup. I had a char grilled pork over vermicelli noodles with peanuts....same tender and tasty thing going on...we topped it off with a couple of iced teas and a couple fried egg rolls. Very very good. I felt a bit guilty cheating on my regular Pho Viet. I had a vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and egg rolls. I had it without vermicelli so effectively it was a salad. It was very good. I'd get it again. My one complaint is that I was still hungry and that may be my fault since I said no noodles. I wish there had been extra lettuce to compensate for the missing noodles. Our son had the kids beef soup with brisket and meatballs. He enjoyed it. The broth was some I'd the best I've had. He didn't like the meatballs because of their dense and hard texture but this is how they are at every Vietnamese restaurant. Husband had the special spicy beef soup with wider noodles and blood cake. He enjoyed it but he thought it was too spicy. There's no such thing for me. The hotter the better.
