Pho (w rare steak and fatty brisket)

My daughter and I had dinner here last night. I wish Yelp allowed half star ratings. I would give this restaurant a 4.5. In terms of whether to round up or down, I reserve 5 stars for the truly great restaurants. The setting is very casual but clean. Service was very good. Food was solid, nothing exceptional but good. We had: Fried Port Dumplings (3.5) - Does not taste homemade but was good and my daughter enjoyed them. Pho (4.0) - I had the pho with rare beef and fatty brisket. I like the fact that they offer 4 sizes. My daughter had the small (which was perfect) and I ordered the XL (very big portion, next time will likely go with just large). Broth was solid, a good rendition of a traditional pho broth. Comes with the typical toppings including sides of bean sprouts, onions, cilantro. This restaurant is very close to our house so I'm sure we'll be back.

As someone who tries hard not to buy into any hype, I have little to argue against Pho Basil, which has quietly become one of the highest rated pho spots in the Westchase area. They've done so by staying consistent -- offering excellent service and even more so, excellent food. Pho Basil is one of those places that is almost too easy to overlook. Sandwiched between several businesses in a strip mall with limited parking, it's the kind of business where nearby residents would drive by countless times before giving it a try. When they finally step inside, what they'll find is a quaint eatery with a mix of booths and small tables, typically bustling at lunchtime with a lighter, more relaxed dinner crowd. The staff consists of mostly young Vietnamese folks working hard to keep guests satisfied. Speaking of satisfied, that's how I feel about the food. Their namesake dish, pho, is outstanding. At $11-16 for a small, large, and XL (#1), I opted for the latter and received a nice sized bowl full of excellent meat cuts, a deeply flavorful broth, and a solid heap of noodles. Their flank, fatty brisket, and bo vien meatballs were excellent, but the tendon was the real surprise--buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The pho ga (chicken pho) was equally impressive, with a fragrant, well-balanced broth and hearty pieces of chicken. I would consider both to be on the upper echelon of pho bowls I've had in the area. The attention to detail extended beyond the pho. I appreciated the ultra-fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, etc.) and lime wedges, which added brightness and depth to the soup. Everything else was also excellent. The fish sauce wings were crispy, fragrant and packed with flavor. The thit nuong grilled pork rice place was subtly sweet, tender, and perfeclty cooked. My Vietnamese iced coffee hit the spot --strong enough to deliver a jolt, but smooth and refreshing for the summer. I was extremely appreciative of the complimentary coconut jello received at the end of the meal which was a nice palate cleanser. They're currently running a buy-one-get-one-free summer special on drinks, including Thai tea, Thai green tea, lemonade, and fruit smoothies (must be the same flavor). I plan on taking advantage of this before summer ends, but this is just the beginning of many return visits. __________ (#1) Which is really just a small, medium, and large.

Pho Basil at Gessner and Westheimer is a great spot, especially for families. Kids' meals are only $7+, which is a great value. We ordered a kids pho, chicken nuggets with fries, two orders of the #2 everything beef pho, and the grilled pork vermicelli bowl with an egg roll--everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The restaurant was clean, including the restrooms, which is always a plus. We'll definitely be back because the service was great! Only thing was I had asked for hot water and never received it.

It's a reason why this spot has a 4.8/5 stars on Yelp, they're legit. To be honest it's better than most of the pho spots in the Chinatown area. The food is hot and fresh, the service is pleasant and the dining area is clean. We started off with some Thai tea & was informed that it's buy one get one free. For our appetizers we ordered some lemon pepper wings. My friend got the chicken banh mi & I had a small pho with meatballs & lean brisket. My Thai tea was delicious, it had the perfect amount of sweetness. The wings came out pipping hot & I mean to the point you had to wait for 5 minutes to dig in. The wings were salty and had a lot of lemon pepper flavor. My friend banh mi was toasted well, crispy and flaky. The chicken itself was not missing out on any seasoning. It was like they marinated that chicken for a long time. The broth on my pho was clean, aromatic, and flavorful. No need for any Sriracha or hoisin sauce. The meat's was tendered. I'll say for a small, it will not get you full but good enough to fill your stomach. I didn't like that the wings came out when I was half way done with my pho but I understand that wings take longer to cook. At the end they brought us out a complimentary dessert which came with jelly & ima assume that it's coconut jelly. Overall, this is a solid spot for some pho. They have other dishes on the menu which I can't wait to come back to try them. I saw that they had Bo Kho which you can have with a baguette or noodles.

I ordered the pho beef noodle soup combination. It came with lean and fatty brisket, meatball, and soft tendon. I enjoyed the aromatic flavors of the broth and noodle to protein ratio. The pho was rich and didn't need a lot of hoisin or sriracha. Would revisit

My husband and I were car shopping for our oldest son and were starving. We had an hour drive so what best to buy time and grab a quick bite. Of course, I found this place on Yelp and saw it had good reviews. I never get tired of Asian food and I can eat pho anytime of the year. I ordered the large combination pho with the rare beef on the side and shrimp spring rolls. The pho broth was tasty, but a bit disappointed with the lack of tendon for the size of the bowl. You'll see in my pictures what I'm talking about. The shrimp spring rolls were a surprise that it didn't have the sliced pork inside just plain shrimp. So, it's not the traditional house spring rolls you'd expect. Overall, the peanut sauce and rolls were bland to me. My husband got the grilled pork banh mi sandwich, which had a generous portion of meat. The service was the best for a pho restaurant so I'd definitely give them 5 stars for that! The wait staff were very attentive and nice.

I've had pho my entire life, I love my Vietnamese people and I want to support them but you gotta give me something to give a positive review. This could be one of the worst pho I've ever had. -soup is too salty without enough bone flavor, it's from powder I can taste it. -not enough noodles, this is from a kids meal -not enough flank brisket -zero tendon -not enough beef balls -not enough value To pay $14 I get it but I feel ripped off. Nice try but it needs help in all aspects. I needs more noodles, more flank meat, if it's called "dac biet" it needs to be "dac biet" more like "dac broke". It comes with 3 meat balls but sliced in half so more like 1 meat ball to make it 3 meat balls? I mean I don't see the value here. What I do like about it, the food is fresh, the red flank steak is fresh, the vegetables are fresh, the meat balls are the handmade type not from a bag, and it does have flavor but for pho standards in Houston? Nah... I added my own green onions, cilantro, red onions, and extra meat because this dish didn't come enough of all of those items.

Great bang for your buck! I went on a Friday during lunchtime and the service was amazing. I got a bahn mi and my husband got vermicelli. Both portions were really big and I have never seen a bahn mi with so much meat. It was very well seasoned if I had to point out anything bad about it it would be that something was a tad too sweet in the bahn mi but it was still really good and I will definitely be returning when I'm in the area. Everything was clean inside, and I loved the plants that they had by the front of the restaurant.

I ordered egg rolls, shrimp spring rolls, chicken pho and and chicken vermicelli. The egg rolls lacked flavor. The shrimp spring rolls were standard. The vermicelli was standard. The only disappointment was the pho. The broth was not savory enough also on to go orders the veggies and the flavor agents were sparse, the green onion, and cilantro. I received dry onion instead of red onion. The basil and mint were also not enough to provide the flavor. I dont understand the good rating. They get a 3 for the other items but I was disappointed in the pho.

Lots of seating, great wait staff, and the sandwiches are gigantic--as they should be for the price. $30 for a sandwich on average. We split an open face pastrami (which they brought an extra plate) and we are glad we did. The potato salad is tiny. Too much sandwich for one but not enough potato salad for two! The pickles they provide before your sandwich arrives are yummy- not like a traditional out of the bar pickle. These are what I remember from NYC. Garlic and not sweet. We also had the apple pie alamode. Also pricey and gigantic. It was warm and delicious. Glad we tried this icon. We went at lunch and they get quite the crowd. You are not rushed at all. Before their recent expansions to Austin, it all began here in Rice Village exactly 15 years ago. The vibes are contemporary and casual, with the kind of space that fits for just about any scenario. Whether it's a solo meal, a lunch date, or a group led affair, the experience is almost always an excellent one. Start by ordering at the counter and find a seat where the food will brought directly to the table. So much of their variety caters to all sorts of dietary restrictions from vegan to gluten free to nut free. Their spicy crispy brussels sprouts ($10) are a nice starter, as is the squash "onion" rings ($12). The local power bowl ($16) is a classic and I've always enjoyed the brown rice and quinoa combo. Their chicken "posolé" is solid, and I love the large hominy bits along with the clear but green tint of a broth. The chicken shawarma bowl ($20) is an interesting mix that includes pickled beets and strawberries, along with their market cheddar burger ($17) and fabulous twice cooked fries. The carrot cupcake is strangely addicting, and I think their gluten free brownie is a bit of a sleeper. Some of their items didn't jive with me previously, such as an underwhelming cashew queso ($9), a semi-laughable Vietnamese steak bowl ($22), and their semi-gringo version of a banh mi ($15). It's not that these items are bad per se, but they definitely don't live up to the same standard that I feel their other dishes do best. Where they hit the biggest home run is their customer service. Everyone working behind the counter does their best to deliver and they almost always do by staying on top of refills, cleanups, and customer greets. I've always enjoyed my experiences here and look forward to every visit.
