There have been some major improvements at Pho One. I thought to stop by to show my other friend who lives in this neighborhood that there's a pho restaurant. I have been reading about Bánh hỏi noodles as a better alternative to the simple rice noodles for Goi Cuon (summer rolls). So, I ordered Bánh Hỏi Thịt Nướng, grilled pork wrap. I may have eaten that way before. But this is going to be my official one. The assembly came with a bowl of hot water (I prefer it warm), plate of vegetables, a plate of meat with more carrots, few sheets of rice paper and a small bowl of fish sauce. First I wet the rice paper from the edge of that hot water bowl. Rotate on the edge for 2 turns. Then, place it on an empty plate. Now, I pack the right amount of lettuce, pickled carrots, cucumber and the protein. Roll it from the edge like a burrito. Dip it in the sauce. And Voila! Time to consume. It was healthy and more fun than those ready-made vermicelli bowls. read more

The pho was really good! I had the pho ga (chicken) and the com chien heo (pork fried rice). They don't give you a bowl for delivery but that wasn't a problem for me. The aromatics were perfect and the noodles and chicken were the perfect portion. You can't go wrong with the pho here. I wasn't fond of the fried rice but it grew on me by day two. Love this little, viet restaurant. It feels so homey and authentic like the restaurants in Vietnam. The owners are Vietnamese husband and wife duo who do almost everything in the restaurant. Their service was amazing! I don't get why people complain about the service here. As for the food, I got the shaken beef cubes (Com bo luc lac) on white, jasmine rice with the addition of 2 eggs. This dish also came with a side of veggies and soup. It was great! It reminded me of my mom's cooking. Definitely felt like a home cooked meal! The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because the beef could've been more tender and the quantity of beef was not enough to fill me up. Haha I'm so fat! Good thing I got the extra eggs. I stopped in here for pho to go since I was already going by Eatwell next door. I ordered a regular sized pho with rare beef, fatty brisket, and tendon. This is my go-to order when trying pho places. Also got a half order of eggrolls. Service was very friendly and prices decent. The pho broth was too thin, very light in color and flavor. In the to go bag they only give you hoisin sauce and no sriracha, and only half a lime wedge. The rare beef was fine, the fatty brisket was tough, tendon was good. The eggrolls were small and just ok. The fish sauce also seemed light and had none of the pickled veg or chili flakes that I'm accustomed to. I come so often to Pho One, I am surprised I haven't written a review! We have found them to have the most consistent pho of all the place we have been to, which have been numerous and all across the city. We've really liked the classic pho tai, the broth is very flavorful and they give a good amount of meat, noodles and fresh accompanying veggies (cilantro, basil, mung beans, jalapeño and lime.) We also get their spring rolls regularly - well stuffed and fresh ingredients. Another good appetizer is the goi ga (fresh, crunchy cabbage with strips of chicken in a light, fresh citrus dressing.) The menu item that I haven't found elsewhere similar is their vegetarian pho. They serve it with fried tofu cubes and fresh steamed broccoli, carrots and cabbage. It is awesome and very filling. The best part about this place is that the family that runs it is so friendly. They greet us when we come in and almost remember our order to the T (except of course when we change it up!) They are NOLA transplants after Katrina, so it's good to see them being so successful here. They've won Best Pho in Houston Press' Best Of once or twice as well. read more

It boggles me that Pho restaurants outside of Chinatown just can't seem to cook an editable bowl of Pho. It almost likes they know I'm only there in desperation and most likely won't return to the restaurant, so no need to serve me something editable. I was in the area and wanting some Pho. I had two options; Pho one or Pho Van across the street. I wanted to try Pho Van but when I saw no one in the restaurant, I quickly pulled out and drove over to Pho One, which also have no one during dinner time. The soup was bland, almost have no flavor. They charge you extra for almost everything. We ordered the combination pho which usually comes with everything. Well not here, you have to pay $1.75 extra for meatball. Want some extra herbs because they didn't give you the appropriate amount for two people? That'll be $3! My poor husband barely touch his food. I was able to use a bunch of sauce to create a little flavor to help make my pho editable. Do yourself a favor and keep driving to Chinatown if you really craving for some Pho! read more

I'm on a Pho kick. I can't get enough and I'm obsessed. This place is literally right around the corner from me and I finally went. It took me long enough. I came for a solo lunch. I started off with the Shrimp and Pork Spring Roll, then ordered the regular combination pho that had medium rare and well done beef, brisket fat and beef flank. Spring Rolls were good but I felt they were a little chewier than I'm used too. Pho was good. Tasty broth, good noodles, enough meat. Another great pho in my belly. Service was quick and friendly. Just like other Asian places. Can't have too high expectations. As long as they get the order night, food comes out hot then we're all good. I finished my lunch and went to the coutner to pay. The older man at the counter suckered me into an assortment of french macaroons. I took them to go and ate them at home. They were all very good. Pho One, in my opinion, is one of the better pho restaurants in greater Houston areas, but also at a disadvantage for more business than they should have. I'll talk about their pho first. The first thing you'll notice Pho One is different from Pho Number Two or Pho Number Three (fake names as most pho restaurants in Houston is just the word "Pho" and add a number to the end) is the broth. Pho One's pho broth taste like it's MSG-free. When I drink this soup, my mouth don't feel so numb where I need to gulp down a cup of water in order for my mouth to feel better. I usually get the pho dac biet large because I like my meats of all kind. On the menu, you can also add bo vien (meatballs) for a few extra bucks. That bowl of pho was so good that I barely talked to my girlfriend as I was too busy chewing the meat, slurping on the noodles, and then drinking the broth. I finish it all the way to where the bowl is empty because the broth is just that good. They also have your other typical Vietnamese dish such as the rice dishes (with grilled pork, chicken, etc.), vermicelli, the spring roll and egg roll, etc. I haven't tried their banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) yet because normally when you go to a restaurant with the name "Pho" in it, you would get their pho instead of the sandwich. Now this is what I notice on my trip to Pho One. First of all the restaurant is not full, and it's not even half full. In fact, we arrived around 6:30PM on a weekday and we were the only couples in the restaurant. Now there will a few take-out customers coming in and mingle with the owner, but I don't see any new time customers like us. But if you go to some of Chinatown/Vietnamesetown (Hong Kong City Mall) pho restaurants, it would be filled with much more customers (mostly Asian of course). I really don't want Pho One to end up like the mom-and-pop Japanese restaurant that was the previous tenant of the same restaurant space, closed down due to lack of business. This already happened with next door previously known as Jersey Mike's sub sandwich, which first became a generic sub sandwich shop, and now it's an Italian bakery, who knows what's going to be next. In fact, I think we'll have dinner at Pho One tonight and then go shopping at Nippan Daido. read more

Located on westheimer and Kirkwood Rds in an unassuming strip mall in westchase, Pho One is a great discovery. SO and I had the mixed beef noodle soup, it was pipping hot how we like it, the portions generous. Equal part noodles to soup ratio unlike other pho restaurants we've visited. Our server, who knows we later found out were the owners are nice down to earth people. They treat you like part of the family as was evident in their interactions with a couple having dinner. The cherry on the cake? Not only does Pho One offer delicious food with a smile, the owners who have Parisian roots made me feel nostalgic in the best possible way. I think Pho One was voted Best Pho by Houston Press a few years ago. Really? The location used to house this awesome Japanese restaurant that only locals go to (authentic hardcore Japanese home cooking, none of that sushi/robata/California roll fare). Eventually that place closed along with Nara and this mini-Tokyo was down to Nippan Daido. After Katrina, Pho One took its place and I gave it a try. Much has not changed since they first opened in terms of their casual decor. One thing to note, pho takes a long while to come out after ordering. The broth is clear but bland. The noodles and beef are ok, but nothing special. Wasn't too impressed the first time. Ate there again a few years later and again, not impressed. So recently I tried a third time (I have no idea why I keep coming back). Again, unimpressed. At least they're consistent. read more

Quiet. Clean. Lots of parking. A little pricier than chinatown but I mean it makes sense. Most notable the club soda with salted limeade IS SO GOOD. This trip I had a full order of egg rolls, a regular dac bit without tripe and with extra tendon, and the salted limeade with club soda. Tendon was so soft. Omg love it. LOTS of bean sprouts. AND the bean sprouts weren't steamed first. I don't like when some places steam/boil the bean sprouts. Bathroom for customers only. $10 min for credit cards.
