A great Pho place on Mass Ave that was bustling on a Sunday evening. I ordered online about 15 minutes before and my order was just about ready when I was there for pickup. The packaging is great as they separate the broth from the noodles and meat. They also have a little baggy of bean sprouts, like, and a packet of hoisan sauce. I took everything out into a bowl to reheat and it tasted just like you would get in the restaurant. The broth is sweet and the meat is tender. Ordered takeout thru grubhub, just one order of Saigon noodles so thought it should be pretty quick to whip up, but had to wait 30 minutes longer than the expected pickup time which was very frustrating. I wanted to know what was the "best" pho in Boston and Yelp turned me to Pho Basil. The place is small, expect maybe a short wait. There is a waitlist you can scan to enter. Wait wasn't so bad like 10-15 min for me and that was on a Wednesday night. I just looked at the menu during the wait time. Staff wasn't that bad. Ordering was easy they do it electronically and give you the check right after ordering in a little slot on the side of the table. Cute packing for take away I got the Thai iced tea, pho dac biet, and crispy chicken basil home special with white rice. Pretty cheap eats and huge portions! Total was less than $40 after taxes (no tip included yet). Thai iced tea was normal. The pho that everyone raves about wasn't the BEST to me but it was good in its own way. Really sweet tasting broth. The table doesn't provide anything but hoison but I wouldn't recommend adding hoison sauce unless you want your broth even more sweet! In my opinion this place probably better for the Thai based foods over the Vietnamese based foods. Even though the name is Pho Basil it seems like the Thai style crispy chicken stir fry was better than the pho! I should have gotten one of the fried rices or drunken noodles with crispy chicken. The soups don't come with a lot of toppings (sprouts, basil) but I didn't mind not wasting. The staff was so so friendly and efficient. After leaving BSO with a friend, we decided to get a bite to eat, and decided upon Pho Basil. It was a little bit of a pain because you had to be added to the waiting list via a scan on your phone. I would much rather be able to walk inside and put my name on a list rather than having to stand outside in the cold and try to scan askew so I can get on a waiting list. Anyways, my friend was very interested in eating here so we put ourselves on the list. Once inside, it was extremely tight we were against the wall at a two seater with about 10 inches between the tables where people had a squished through, including the servers. I understand about optimizing your space but maybe they should think about a different seating arrangement as it was extremely uncomfortable as I'm a 275 pound guy my left arm was pressed against the wall the entire meal. And I kept getting touched by the service as they were bringing over food to our table and two other tables. The food came out all at once rather than the appetizers, and then the mains, which is not really a bad thing as I like a full table but unfortunately, all of these plates and bowls did not fit on the table and it was just so crowded that it impeded my happiness of eating anything. Now that I vented about my seating experience, I would like to say that the staff was very friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable and very polite . So now onto the orders for appetizers, we ordered the fried Gyoza I believe there were eight Gyoza on the plate with a small piece of iceberg lettuce, and some pickled radish carrot on top. The Gyoza was cooked correctly with a small amount of stuffing not really anything special. I would rate it as 2 stars, dish was priced at $8.50. We also ordered the wings. I forget how many were, maybe six or eight. They were supposed to be cooked with a special Thai herb. However, I did not taste any type of spicing. However, they were delicious, fried perfectly, and extremely tasty. They also came with the same little piece of iceberg lettuce and pickled radish carrots on the side with a little bit of dipping sauce. Wings are at 5 stars. Price $8.95, possibly the best value on the menu. For a couple of the mains we ordered Pad See You, which is basically a stirfried noodle with some broccoli, carrot, Chinese broccoli, egg and some beef. This dish was the best thing on the table. I would give this a 4 star rating as there was very little beef. Price $16.96. And lastly, we ordered the Dac Biet, which is Pho. The bowl was the size of the medium at most pho restaurants , however,Ph Basil only had one size. The Dac Biet comes with rare steak, well-done flank, tendon and tripe. We ordered ours without the tripe. I did ask the waitress if there was a good amount of meat or if I could possibly order extra meat, she said there was a lot of meat. I'd say it was on the lite side and would've liked and appreciated if I could have ordered extra meat. I would've had no problem paying extra for it as I do it most places. Unfortunately it was not even an option. All in all the Pho was pretty average as you'd find well outside the city. The broth was a tad on the salty side. I would put it in the middle maybe a 2 1/2 stars for the Pho. No, as everyone knows on mass Avenue basically there's no parking if you're lucky enough to get a meter the parking guards I'll looking down on you. I did not happen to view the restrooms, so I cannot state the cleanliness as I cannot for the kitchen. If you are downtown, it's a very pleasant place to go as long as it's not cold outside as they make you wait outside not in the restaurant. read more

Since we were a small group and visited for an early dinner, we were seated immediately. We ordered some crab rangoons to start, which were tasty but nothing too special. The real star of the show was the saigon noodle dish, which I ordered with crispy chicken. The noodles, sauce, and veggies all paired together perfectly, and everything was elevated so much further with some delicious crispy chicken on top. Cozy little space with a good selection of food. Was surprised to see Thai food here as well, but we were here for the pho only. My boyfriend got the dac biet and I got the bun bo hue. I tasted the soups first and I was very pleased with how good both soups were, but the dac biet had one of my favorite pho soup bases ever. After a full day of walking through the city, the best way I could end my day was by eating a comforting bowl of pho. Pho Basil has little space for seating, therefore the wait time did last for roughly 30 minutes during dinner time. And this was a wait time for a table for 1. Regardless, the food was worth it. The waitress was very nice as well as the rest of the staff. It did feel a bit weird at first because I noticed the staff and manager or owner staring at me. Then I realized I was the only black person in there, LOL. TO BE CLEAR!! There wasn't any negative sense to the stares, but more of "Is she going to like the food?" Of which, I loved it! The pho was so warm and tasty! The meat was tender and the mint, cilantro, bean sprouts toppings tasted fresh. The crab rangoons were so crispy and delicious, especially with the sauce. And the chai tea was nice and sweet. I looked back at the manager/owner in between eating and noticed he was smiling and asked was the food good? I gave a thumbs up as I had a mouth full of pho, Lol! I've been to follow basil before a few times and never realize how good the food really was. We stopped in last night randomly on the way home and had a really great experience. The service was very quick. We walked in and were immediately seated. I appreciate that the menu has a QR code on the table so you don't have to wait for anyone to bring you menus. Additionally, after taking our orders on their portable machines, they quickly printed out the receipt and put it in a container at the end of the table, which we appreciated. It just expedites eating your food getting in and getting out. We ordered the Jasmine limeade and the sparkling limeade. Both were tasty. However, if you don't like citrusy or sour drinks, do not get the sparkling limeade. I personally love those taste so I enjoyed it. My fiancé enjoyed the Jasmine was a little bit more sweeter side. Appetizers spicy rangoon and the roti n curry dip. This is my second time having these dishes and they were even better last night! The spicy rangoon was not too spicy, and is packed with crab meat. The crisp of the rangoon was very light and not oily. The roti for the curry dip also resembled this lightness and flakiness. The curry dip was a sweet and savory blend that has a hint of spice and is so tasty. The appetizers were a good portion to share and we weren't full from eating them. For entrées, I got the Tom Yum fried rice with shrimp and my partner got the spicy eggplant. Both dishes were spicy like we like them and well seasoned. He asked for brown rice with his meal and said it was cooked well. My fried rice included basil, pepper, egg, and medium sized shrimp. His spicy eggplant included, eggplant, peppers, onion, tofu, mushroom in a light brown spicy sauce. Both dishes were very good. My fiancé did say the spicy eggplant was very spicy and that says a lot for him because he loves spicy food. It was about 90% full but luckily we got a table without having to wait. The restaurant is on the smaller side but they had a good amount of waiters and the service was excellent. Despite being busy the food also came out really fast. I ordered the drunken noodle based on the waitresses recommendation. I added the crispy chicken based off the yelp reviews I red. 2nd night of my business trip. I again opted for a familiar and reliable cuisine. I'm generally of the opinion that any Thai food is good Thai food. I ordered the drunken noodles w beef, chicken wings and Thai tea. This was a mobile order but the delivery was only half a mile.T First thing I noticed was that there were no utensils given(even though I specifically asked for it). Great, how am I supposed to eat the noodles? Luckily my hotel gave me some so it wasn't a big deal. Wings-full disclaimer, fried chicken wings are my fav food. I will eat day old grocery store fried chicken because my standards are out the window when it comes to fried chicken. Now I understand that this was a mobile order but the wings came pretty dead. The wings themselves don't have much flavor but the sauce adds some sweetness. The texture of the wings... well I was well familiar with it eating grocery store wings. No juiciness, soggy sides and just overall poor flavor. I would've thought these were from a forgotten hot bar from the texture. Maybe these wings would have been better in store? But I think modern tech has solved wing transportation(vent holes) so I would expect better nowadays. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Korean fried chicken. Drunken noodles-a dish that I think is very difficult to get wrong. I chose the beef(upcharge) option and was very disappointed. The beef came with 3 large pieces that I initially thought were just not cut up. Once I bit into it, it was obvious the big pieces were mainly just gristle. Tough, rubbery cuts that I would typically throw away. Fortunately there weren't many beef pieces as the dish tasted better without them. The flavors of the noodles themself were still good, although I wish they had a wokhei flavor that usually elevates the dish. Thai tea-opted for no ice(upcharge). I'm not sure if you actually get more this way since the cup doesn't come filled up. It did come in a bag in the mobile order though so that was considerate in case of spills. The flavor itself was fine. A bit surprisingly, I wished it was a tad bit sweeter. Typically I find Thai tea too sweet so that was unexpected. Overall, Thai food is a great cuisine. That description proved accurate. The egg noodles, chicken, etc, all seemed satisfactory. The broth, basically a coconut curry broth, acted as a soup broth. Some places choose to make the broth denser, like the difference between ramen broth in Japan and in America. Nonetheless, it still seemed delicious, if a bit over-indexed on coconut milk. I have ordered their Dac Biet (the basic pho dish) both times I've been, and it doesn't disappoint. The flavors are great and the meat is tender.
