This was my first time trying mentaiko udon, so I can't speak to its authenticity, but I can say it was absolutely delicious! The dish had incredible depth of flavor, and I was impressed by the generous portions of both noodles and crab meat. I ordered through DoorDash, so I can only imagine how much better it would be fresh in the restaurant. I'd definitely order it again!

Wow! The perfect chewy noodles house made was coated in the creamy rich sauce that was super well balanced. Every bite was making me want more - some would have bits of crab, others the uni and sometime both! I had such a culinary experience enjoying every spoonful! Come early or be prepared to wait (especially if you're a large party)

Service and ambiance: eating solo, sat me at the bar, and the food arrived pretty quick. No issues there. Spicy Dan Dan Udon was delicious! Great udon noodles, broth was very flavorful.

This small family-run restaurant near BU housing specializes in homemade udon (good sign that half of the restaurant's diners were returning customers). Started with the shumai dumplings stuffed with shrimp, and then the kamo nanban udon (duck slices on top). Both were very good (vegetarian options also available). The udon entree portion was large enough for me to take some home. Staff worked quickly and efficiently, so that those waiting could get a table (there can be a wait at lunch time). This was a nice, reasonable priced find near BU and near Green Line T stops.

This experience blew my mind. It reminded me of the cute ramen spot near my own college campus, just as this one is right by BU. I bet it's a comfort meal for many students. Given that it's a campus spot, it's not that big but not too small either. We were able to be seated despite it being kind of busy. It feels so amazing to enjoy warm noodles as fall becomes winter, especially as a Southerner visiting New England! We shared the agedashi tofu and takoyaki for appetizers. I ordered the cheese curry udon for my main. I also got to taste some of their famous uni cream udon. The flavors of both starters were incredible & I was happy to get more than one piece of each. While the cheese curry was still good, I wish it had more cheesy texture. I should have ordered the uni cream udon because it was unbelievable, but that's okay I'll save it for my next trip...

Futago has a great variety of flavorful bowls of udon that are all fantastic for a cold day! Food: Every udon I've tried has been a blast of flavor. The broth clings perfectly to the udon noodles making the bouncy noodles the star. The creamy uni bowl was my favorite flavor so far but it's almost too rich to finish in one sitting. Service: The wait staff is very friendly and work hard to seat you in a reasonable wait time. Atmosphere: The paints on the wall and the wooden furniture makes for a cozy space, but since the seating space is maxed out it can get a little noisy.

Delicious!! The food was savory and satisfying, but didn't leave me feeling disgusting or too heavy. The items I tried were flavorful. I got the Uni Cream Udon, but without the uni. They ran out of uni, but they said they could substitute it with Snow Crab instead. The restaurant was bright with natural light and clean. All the items were well crafted and aesthetically pleasing. Service was standard and good. The waitress talked a bit fast, but was thorough.

Good food. Good vibes. Friendly staff. Tucked away in a corner of the Fenway area is this nice spot for yummy noodz. Personally loved the uni cream, as it felt pretty refreshing while still maintaining its smooth texture going down - definitely would suggest if you're into seafood, along with their fried oysters! Plenty of street parking, if you know where to find it. Otherwise, it's just a short walk from the green line. Would definitely recommend.

Food was great. We didn't make reservations so we got seated at a big table, sharing table with other people. Overall great!

Futago has been on my list and it did not disappoint! I am still DREAMING of my creamy uni udon from futago. It was a little pricy, however, i think very worth it. It was so fresh, creamy, and unlike anything I had before. The noodles were bouncy and long, and there was more than enough food (i could barely finish my portion. We came on a weekday for lunch and were sat immediately, but there was still quite a few customers. Service was very attentive (I do not think our water ever went down more than a few sips) and super fast with our bowls coming out almost immediately. The inside ambiance if very casual and cute. I will certainly be coming back to try more!

always enjoy coming here when i'm in the mood for warm soupy udon. the place is on the smaller side and the service is fast as they try to turn the tables for new customers. the food has always been fresh and well balanced.

    Truffle beef udon

Came here around 7:30pm on a Saturday night and there was quite the wait. There were 4 groups ahead of us and the waiting area in the restaurant was really tiny, so people were huddled on the sidewalk and some people even waited in their cars because it was so cold out. Definitely get here a bit earlier if you want to be seated quickly since there aren't a ton of seats, but their system was quite good to get people served quickly. While we were waiting, we were asked what our order would be so when we did get seated, we had our food in a matter of minutes. Truffle beef udon ($21) - I had a taste of my partner's dish and the truffle taste was very prominent, so if you like truffle this could be the dish for you. The beef was nice and soft, and the rich broth was very hearty and filling. Uni cream udon ($25) - This was my order and it was SO GOOD. The cream broth was actually a lot more watery than I thought it would be, but it ended up being quite good because it wasn't as heavy. I drank the entire broth by the end of the meal - it had a nice milky cream taste to it without being too heavy on the cream or butter. The plump udon paired really nicely with the cream sauce, and the toppings really made this special. The fish eggs were popping and salty, the crab was actual crab meat (not imitation!) and really sweet, and the uni was creamy and delicious without being very fishy at all. I'd say I would order this next time, but I really want to try the cold uni udon as well, but this was a winner - would definitely order again on a repeat trip after trying some of the other flavors. The service was also very good - they were very attentive to water and very up front about the seating situation and the time estimates for those waiting. A wonderful experience!

The udon here was exceptional. I really enjoyed it so much, it had such great flavor and fresh ingredients. Service here was great too, they are very busy even still they handle it quite well. We were sat pretty quickly considering how busy, and our orders taken promptly. Really good feel here, very clean and thought out setup.

When will they bring back the Miso Carbonara?

Went there recently and it's still not on the menu. They've probably taken it down for the time being and I haven't heard anything yet about them bringing this dish back.

I have never experieced a Japanese restaurant or steak house. Any suggestions?

This place is mostly noodle soups, I would recommend just going for the signature dishes as that would be a safe bet. We tried two of them (sukiyaki and beef truffle), both were delicious.

Any suggestions of the best dish I should try?

The duck udon was so smokey good! Miso carbonara was tasty as well and not as heavy as it looks.

There was a short wait since they bake the cheesecakes fresh in batches, but it moved pretty quickly. The Original Japanese Cheesecake was warm, soft, and definitely lived up to its signature "jiggle." It's very different from a traditional cheesecake--much lighter, fluffier, and less sweet, almost like a cross between a soufflé and a sponge cake. If you're expecting a rich New York-style cheesecake, this isn't that. Personally, I enjoyed how light it was, and it didn't leave me feeling overly full. The staff was friendly, and the shop was clean and well organized. My only suggestion would be to have a few more seating options since it's mostly grab-and-go. Overall, it's worth checking out if you're in downtown Boston or curious about Japanese-style cheesecake. I'd come back again and would like to try some of their other pastries next time.

I ordered an Ube cheesecake and repeated my order as it seemed there might have been some miscommunication. I was in a bit of a rush due to limited parking and unfortunately didn't check my bag before leaving. When I got home, I realized I had been given a different cheesecake than what I ordered. I decided to keep it rather than return, as going back to Chinatown wasn't convenient at the time. The cheesecake itself was also disappointing in texture and freshness--it felt quite soggy and not as fresh as expected. Overall, the experience did not meet my expectations, and I don't think I would return.

Portuguese Egg Tart葡撻: The shop keeps the egg tarts in a warming box, which is very thoughtful. I've always preferred the cookie crust of old-fashioned Hongkongese egg tarts; they don't crumble or feel sticky in your throat. The custard filling looked a bit overbaked on the surface, but it was still smooth and creamy inside. The milk and egg flavors were qualified, and it was not too sweet. While not particularly amazing, it definitely deserved 4 stars, especially for a Cantonese person like me who hasn't had egg tarts in a long time. Hongkongese Egg Tart蛋撻: The crust is the same as the Portuguese egg tart, but the custard filling seems a bit more diluted, with a lighter milk flavor and a stronger egg flavor. People who aren't used to it might find it a bit eggy. I still prefer the former. Custard Bread奶黃包: Recommended by the owner, and it was definitely the best thing there! I ate it the next morning, but the bread was still soft, and the crust wasn't dry. The custard filling was generous, sweet, creamy, moist, and had a slightly grainy texture. Sausage Bread腸仔包: The seasoning was quite interesting, with a hint of wasabi (?). However, the sausage itself was just average, with a slightly starchy texture. Breads generally cost $2-4 each, and here four items were only $8+, enough to last me all day Important Reminder: Cash only for orders of $10 or less.

I am always surprised at how full I am when I leave! I'm stuffed every time. There is complementary miso soup with all of the bowls I've tried, outlined below. I really loved all of the bowls I've tried but my favorites are probably the Sake Aisuru Don and Kuromon Don. I just prefer more salmon to more tuna though, and they're all very good! Food: - Sake Aisuru Don: their classic all-salmon bowl! I loved the larger cuts of salmon, and I was pleasantly surprised that even the more pulverized salmon was flavorful! - Kuromon Don: loved the yellowtail in this! Each fish comes with two pieces (except the mackerel for which there are four), and I liked the sampler style for the salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and izumidai. - Maguro Toro Don: so much tuna! And all such high quality. The otoro was so fatty that it practically melted in my mouth without chewing. - Sake Maguro Hamachi Don: a mix of salmon, blue fin tuna, and yellowtail. The variety is one of the biggest highlights. They have many different types of soft breads and buns, including options like pork floss buns, pineapple buns, and other bakery staples. The breads have a softer texture compared to many Western-style bakeries, and the selection makes it easy to pick up several items to try.
