I feel like Chiharu is a bit of a hidden gem! Despite its unassuming exterior, I was pleasantly surprised with how nice my food was. We came on a weeknight and easily snagged seats. The hostess was very kind and accommodating. I have high suspicions this place is owned by Chinese people based on some clues, such as Chinese style noodles on the ramen menu and steamed pork buns as an appetizer. We got the beef noodle soup which was excellent (albeit not expected in a Japanese restaurant!). It was actually a little spicy. Came with lots of beef and a flavorful and rich broth. We got two of the special rolls, Kiss of Fire and (I think) Torched Yellowtail, which were both tasty. No complaints there! For our appetizer we got sashimi salad, composed of strips of several kinds of raw fish (salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellowtail) and some surimi and avocado on top of a bed of greens. I was really excited to try this place due to the raving reviews, but felt very underwhelmed eating here. The service is very good and our waitress was very kind. We only ordered sushi and it was just okay. Definitely not worth what they're charging. I remember one piece of fish being extremely cold so I imagine it was recently pulled out of the freezer. Unassuming on the outside, the interior of this small, authentic spot is clean and beautiful. The service was personal, friendly and quick. They do not skimp on anything! The ramen is huge, and the nigiri is the biggest piece of rice and fish I have ever seen. Both the rice and fish were soft too. The rolls were delicious and creative. We sought out a place with sushi and ramen for a rainy gray sky Saturday and can't believe this place was nearby all along! We were welcomed as soon as we walked in, and there were about 3 other tables being served. Ambiance: There were light piano tunes playing in the background very easy going and allowed for easy conversation keeping. Tidy and refreshing in a semi small space but about 5-6 seating tables and sushi bar seatings. The plants by the windows were beautiful, and there was simple but beautiful decor too. Great touched from the chopstick holders to plating, tea pots, and cups. Service: Our server was beyond friendly and willing to give details on items of the menu or options if we asked, which was much appreciated. She was constantly checking in throughout our meal and did very well clearing up as we finished plates. Food: We had an assortment of items which added up quickly, but it was SUPER worth it! The Shumai was steaming fresh and delicious! Edamame too and they were both out in id say 5-10 minutes. The entrees took only another 10-15 or so minutes to come out consisted of sushi [lobster roll & tiger roll and spicy salmon hand roll] and the house beef soup, all of which were large and savory portions. My friends and I arrived at Chiharu right when it opened on the weekend, and it was not too busy. There is a small parking lot next to the driving school with designated parking spots for this restaurant, but the space is a bit tight there. There is also only one server, so the service is not exceptionally fast. I ordered sashimi salad, salmon sashimi, scallop sashimi, kiss of fire roll, spider roll, phoenix roll, spicy titanic roll, and torched yellowtail roll. My favorite was the spicy titanic roll, but I also quite enjoyed the phoenix roll and kiss of fire roll. The sashimi slices are a bit thin in the sashimi salad, but I did enjoy the variety of fish and vegetables present. My favorite sashimi was the yellowtail, which tasted quite fresh and delicious. All the seafood in the rolls tasted really fresh and good, including the shrimp tempura. My least favorite was the torched yellowtail roll as I did not taste much yellowtail, and the eel felt lackluster. The scallop sashimi was alright, and the salmon sashimi was on the leaner side. I enjoyed the careful effort put into the presentation of all these sushi. Unfortunately, their other special rolls do not sound as appealing to me, but I would come back again since their sushi tastes fresh! read more

If I have one complaint, they seem to prioritize take out orders over dine-in customers, so plan for an extended visit if you plan to dine in person since sushi seems to take a while to come out. Finally. A ramen place in Boston that hits all the right notes. I went to Chiharu on a snowy day to try its tan tan ramen, and it quickly became my favorite ramen in Boston. At first I was hesitant to order the tan tan ramen since I don't care much for peanuts, but the amount of peanut sauce was small compared to the rest of the broth. The peanut flavor was nowhere near as strong as I had expected, and the combination of the peanut sauce and the broth was actually really tasty. The highlight for me was the chashu pork, which was well-seasoned and incredibly delicious. It was easily the best chashu on ramen I've had in years. I also asked for something to make my broth spicy, and my server gladly gave me some chili oil. The chili oil wasn't spicy, but it added another layer of flavor which I really liked. Unfortunately Chiharu is pretty tiny. When I went for dinner one time without a reservation I was asked to wait for 20 minutes. I strongly suggest going for lunch time or making a reservation for dinner time. read more

We walked in at 6:30pm on a Friday and were seated without a wait. Perfect timing because it really picked up and was completely full by the time we left. The first time I came here I arrived for an early dinner after a workout, craving Japanese cuisine. The staff were friendly and the food served in a timely manner. From the melt-in-your-mouth meat, fresh ramen noodles, crunch of the seaweed, moist menma bamboo, perfectly cooked soft boiled egg, to the creamy and rich broth and surprising nutty peanut sauce pairing. If you watch Amazon orginal series called Ramen girl I felt like the main character who after consuming a bowl of delicious ramen, tilts her head back, making a satisfying "ahhhh" sound with a big smile. Chiharu Sushi & Noodle is a small spot located right on Route 1 in Brookline by the intersection with Cypress Street. In addition to street parking, they have a few spots in a nearby parking lot - just call for info. Chiharu is small but nice, with 9 tables for 2 that can be slid into various groupings along the right wall, and 4 seats along the sushi bar in the back. For the appetites of 3 lightweights, we ordered the following to share, and enjoyed our dinner: Chiharu Pancake $8.95 fried egg on top Seaweed Salad $5.95 Dragon Roll $11.95 Tempura shrimp and cucumber wrapped with eel, avocado and eel sauce Tan Tan Ramen $12.95 homemade chicken and pork bone broth with peanut sauce The pancake was lighter than your average Chinese scallion pancake. The portion of seaweed salad was generous as the lettuce beneath it was simply a light layer to separate it from the bowl rather there to act as a filler. The Tan Tan Ramen was fine for me with nice bouncy noodles and 3 tender slices of pork, but was just a bit too spicy for my dad. The bamboo in the ramen was likely canned, and could be done without. Service was pleasant, and the individual bathroom (ladies') clean and handicap accessible. *** 10/2018 *** A short walk from the Brookline Hills T stop off the D line, but a rather long (relatively) wait to cross Route 9. Just a single step up off the sidewalk to gain entrance into Chiharu Sushi & Noodle. We had made a reservation for an earlier dinner, but still we had to wait a bit while the tables were moved and set for us. Food takes a while here as it was 22 minutes before the first entree hit the table, and a full half hour till the last plate (a maki roll and an order of sashimi) was delivered and we could start eating as a table. My Teriyaki Eel Dinner Bento Box $17.95 was served with miso soup, salad and assorted appetizers. It was impressive looking, however, I was hoping for a true assortment of appetizers (instead, what came was a selection of maki and sushi & sashimi, which would please the normal raw fish sushi fan, but I unfortunately am more of a cooked food girl). Though, I don't think this restaurant ever gets crazy busy with dine-in at any time. No parking by the way. You may get lucky with a few street parking on other streets. Both the sushi and noodles dishes we tried were top notch, but what I was not expecting was how good the ramen would be. The tan tan is a massive bowl of ramen, with a peanut based broth. The subtle sweet peanut sauce marries perfectly when combined with all the salty and tangy ingredients. There is soooo much good going on in this bowl but the pork belly alone was worth the trip. This pork is just....different. I know imported when I see it. I'm sorry fellow Americans, but our pork doesn't taste THIS good. I've had my struggles and even doubts at times with the quality of Ramen in our great city, but Ill gladly chalk this unintentional run into an almost perfect bowl of ramen as a win win. Right off the ever so busy route 9, this place isn't a convenience to get to unless you live in the area. Chiharu is a quaint, modern Japanese restaurant with surprisingly yummy eats. I was pleasantly surprised by their Tan Tan Ramen. This is coming from someone who loves tonkotsu ramen. Recs: (+) Tan Tan ramen- a mixture of pork and chicken broth with excellent meat-to-fat ratio pork slices. They are generous with their pork slices. Soup is milky and delicious to the point where I actually want to finish the broth. Beansprouts, corn, snow peas, and half egg included. Half egg could be more oozy-it's almost fully cooked. For a small hole-in-the wall Japanese resto, they did a great job with the broth!! (+) Kiss of Fire roll. The jalapenos with the dollop of siracha made this roll oh-so-deliciously spicy! I brought my sushi loving girlfriend here and hands down it was a great experience. Luckily we made reservations because only 2 tables were available for sit down dining. The waiter who was a one man show was great and even with loads of takeout orders to fill he was at our table every time we needed anything. By far the best sushi in Brookline and adjoining areas!! We ordered the Tan Tan Ramen (fresh, huge serving, delicious, as good as it gets!!). Then the Torched Yellow tail roll which was the tastiest roll I have had in a long, long time ( 5/5). The Kiss of Fire roll is also far above average and generously proportioned (4.5/5) . Earlier, we tried the eel avocado roll and the eel cucumber rolls and found them to be better than average (Closer to 4/5). All of it was made in a timely fashion. Parking is not possible on Boylston, so go around the corner and there is metered parking on Cypress. Covid-era takeout update: First thing's first: you HAVE to try this restaurant if you haven't before. It's an experience. I've been countless times since my first review of it, but it had been about a year since I last ate there as covid messed everything up and Chiharu only has takeout right now. I live a 30 minute walk from the restaurant, so it just hasn't felt accessible for takeout. My bf and I finally bit the bullet though and walked to and from today in 20 degree weather because we needed Chiharu so badly. We didn't know what to expect because takeout food is always unpredictable and usually not on par with food from eating in. Well... let me tell ya--Chiharu is killing it as usual!! The restaurant is usually 10/10 and takeout is also 10/10. I swear, this place makes my favorite food in the entire world, all while providing incredible service. This is just as obvious in the takeout. We walked back in the below freezing temps, the takeout bag getting jostled continually, yet everything was packaged so beautifully that there wasn't any spillage. When we opened up the bag, we were floored. The portion sizes were just as big as eating in (maybe even bigger??). For a normal person (aka not me, a fiend when eating food I love), this would easily be two big meals. There was so much of everything--the beef, the noodles, the vegetables. Because it's been a year since I last had Chiharu, I forgot what an absolute experience it is to eat their food. Every bite in the 40 minutes I took to eat the massive amounts of food transported me to another dimension. Honestly, it might be even nicer to eat this at home so I can "mmm" as much as I want. And might I add, the stix themselves were very unique-- octagonal! SASHIMI SALAD: this was yum though wished there were more pieces of sashimi. Sashimi, though fresh, were sliced into thin strips with maybe 8 pieces in total? Greens well dressed. TAN TAN RAMEN: excellent except for the chashu ... :-( Noodles were super QQ, broth base was complex and not overly salty (flavor was so good, I actually packed the soup to-go), the "fillings" were delicate Esp the super thinly sliced sugar snap peas (LOVED that detail). But, unfortunately, the chashu was tougher than would've liked. I wanted it to melt in my mouth but instead it required hard bites.... BEEF NOODLE SOUP: good but not great. Hubs and I were so happy to see in pics that they used the S shank beef tendon and included the pickled mustard greens stop (Taiwanese style). But soup broth was too sweet. I can't speak much about the sushi because I haven't ordered it, but their Tan Tan ramen is absolutely delicious! The broth was super flavorful and the little bit of spice from the chili oil(?) added a perfect edge to the creaminess of the soup. The noodles themselves had an excellent bite and chewiness to them which I really enjoy. The char siu isn't exactly that legendary "melts in your mouth" but it wasn't tough and the flavor of whatever marinade it was in was super nice. The fresh bean shoots and bamboo and other veggies they added were excellent garnish and there was also a slightly oozy soft boiled egg. The portion was enough to make me full with a little room for dessert (ice cream mochi, pretty good, but you can get them in grocery stores for way cheaper than $5 for 2 pieces). I also tried their Special Beef Noodle Soup and it tasted good, but not as delicious as the Tan Tan Ramen. The broth is pretty sweet and soy sauce based(?). Service: Pretty attentive, only took 15 minutes to get my meal when the restaurant was like 3/4 full at lunch time. Waiter goes around to fill water glasses.
