    Gankara Miso
    Joe J.

I've wanted to try this place for a long time. It's in the heart of brookline and is always packed and has great reviews, so I was pretty excited going in. Unfortunately, my experience didn't quite live up to the hype. I ordered the Gankara Miso. The chashu was easily the highlight, very tender with nice seasoning on the outer layer and clearly well prepared. The ground beef had some decent flavor, but overall it didn't really add much to the bowl. The broth was thicker and creamier than I expected for a miso, it reminded me more of a tonkotsu and while it had some heat, it was surprisingly lacking in depth. Outside of the spice, there wasn't much flavor coming through, which was disappointing given how rich it looked. I really wanted to love this spot, especially after waiting so long to finally try it. I might give it another shot and try a different bowl in the future, but based on this visit, I left feeling underwhelmed.

Tan tan ramen with spice on the side

I've been here a couple times and every time it is SOO good and reliable. Service is super fast, and guests can't really sit around and chat at the tables but the food is worth it. Last time, I got the tan tan ramen with the spicy chili oil on the side and it was delicious. I loved that I could customize the spice level. The gyoza are also delicious. Reasonably priced as well. I'd highly recommend!

Everywhere I travel, I always look for a good ramen spot, so when I saw this place had one of the highest ratings in Boston, I was really excited to try it. I came straight here after my flight landed, and it was the perfect rainy day for ramen. All the servers were very friendly and helpful, and the space itself is dim and cozy, with a really nice ambiance. I liked that I was able to eat alone, since there were so many other solo diners as well. You check in and order with the hostess before going inside, which was very efficient. I already knew I was getting the spicy miso and karaage, and both were so delicious. The portions were generous, too, and I had a bunch of leftovers, which I took with me and ate later in the evening.

Pro tip: click "Join waitlist" from their Google search listing to get a sense of wait time and add yourself. If you're driving, there's a big parking lot behind the building, look for Maruichi parking on maps. The restaurant is inside an old arcade building. The host calls out your name from the waitlist and you put in your order with the host at that point, so be ready. Then you are seated and they bring you your order. We got the karaage extra crunchy with the garlic ponzu sauce to share and I took a chance on trying the new Yuzu Kosho ramen. The karaage came out hot and freshly fried, it was very crunchy and juicy and the sauce was flavorful, I found myself dunking each bite. The yuzu kosho didn't hit for me in terms of broth flavor, as the citrus notes with the spice didn't quite seem to work for me. But the components were high quality with good noodles, tender and flavorful chashu, tasty menma, and a perfect ajitama. I'll be back, but will stick to the more classic shoyu or miso ramen, I liked the Shoyu 1910 better last time.

My brother took me here for a yummy bowl of ramen. This is a very small restaurant with a small menu which is perfect for me who can be indecisive when there are too many items to order from. ***Note: per my experience and observation, there is no line. We were waiting in line but then others came and cut in front of us to order with the hostess. It seem like it's first come first serve. Your order is taken by the host at the front before you are seated. If you're ready to order then go up to hostess. Our party of 5 was seated at the front window and we ordered the following: 1. 2-Gankara miso: The spice level was perfect for my 12yo but I still added more pepper powder as I like my noodle spicy. The broth is very flavorful. There is a good amount of ingredients and the pork slices were very soft. The noodles was not overcooked as it was nice and chewey. 2. 2-Miso: My brother and 10yo son enjoyed their bowl. 3. Karai shoyu: Hubby says it was good but a little on the salty side and it did not have veggies. 4. Kaarage chicken and I asked for extra crispy. It comes with a side of yummy sauce that is not too sweet but has a hint of tartness. The chicken was very moist chicken but not crispy as I had ordered. We all enjoyed this greatly. To be honest, I'm not used to the 1st come 1st serve having people cut in line while I'm looking at the menu but it works for the business and the locals. The restaurant was very busy but everything seem on point with their business process making it run very smooothly. I would definitely return next time I'm in town to try the other ramen bowls.

We came here for lunch on a Thursday and there was no wait at all. It's in the Coolidge Corner Arcade which is a cute old school building with a bunch of barber shops and stuff. Of note, the farmer's market across the street starts at 1:30pm on Thursdays, so we actually were not able to find parking in the past when we tried to come here on a Thursday. This time we were able to get there early enough to find parking in the paid lot. The restaurant is small and I could imagine it getting a cramped if more people were there. My husband got the gankara miso and I got the sapporo shio and we both enjoyed our ramen. This is probably close to as authentic as it gets here in the states. We've had better in Japan and maybe in NYC in the past, but it the broth was really good. I think I prefer the straight noodles sometimes available in craft ramen places over the normal ramen noodles offered here. The karaage was also delicious and I really liked the dipping sauce. They sell cute shirts/sweatshirts/aprons here and I was kind of tempted. The AC or roof was leaking a little so a little water was dripping on my husband's back (his back was towards the shirt/sweatshirt displayed on the wall) but not enough to bother him enough to say something. Overall, I would come back if I'm in the area, but probably not make the trek here from the suburbs. However, I'm generally not a huge fan of ramen, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. This place deserves 4-5 stars for its ramen.

I was so excited to try Ganko Ittetsu, but ultimately I don't think it ranks as highly for me as other Boston ramen places. I came here relatively early on a Saturday evening (probably around 5/5:30pm). We checked in online probably 5-10 minutes before showing up, but still had to wait about 15-20 mins to be seated. It's a tiny restaurant, but they do a good job moving people through. I would peruse the menu before showing up, because they took our orders right when we checked in at the hostess stand. I came with two friends and we all got the gankara miso and shared a gyoza. My bowl was tasty, but I'm not sure if it was anything standout compared to other ramens I've had. The bowl is big, but I felt that all of the toppings (the Napa, beansprouts, and seaweed) somewhat overpowered the broth and the noodles. The chashu was a bit tough and could have had more flavor. Likewise, I thought the spice was present in the broth but not the deep umami that comes from miso paste. It could've been I got an off bowl, so I'd be willing to try again. But, I do think there are better bowls of ramen that you can get much more quickly around the city.

Top-tier as always! This place is a must hit for anyone living or visiting the Boston area. I come here frequently and all the ramen are delicious but the Gankara Miso tends to be my go to option. Don't sleep on the gyoza or fried chicken either! If you're looking to drink they also have a nice option of local craft beers too.

Finally visited the Boston location after the recasting loss of this chain in Providence Rhode Island. This location is inside a small older plaza building. Antique vibes and is small with street parking only. We were seated quickly and service was quick! Ordered some chicken goyza which were savory and good, but the highly is the ramen~ Ordered the spicy miso and I highly enjoyed my meal! Savory and perfect noodles that aren't overcooked~ we were in and out 20mins~

Rating: 4.5 Came back to again since I was in boston area. I was sad that they closed providence location while back and has not been able to visit since then. When we got here it was busy but we only had to wait about a minutes before being seated. It's a very small shop located in old arcade plaza with only few seatings. They take your order before you get seated so that they can serve you food right away. I got the tan tan men with ajitama and chicken gyoza. The tan tan men was good as i remembered. Perfectly cooked firm noodle paired with sesame based broth pairs very well. You get the flavor of sesame and pork broth with hint of cilantro. Gyoza was also nice and crispy with juicy inside. Paired well with vinegary sauce. Service was quick and efficient. We were in and out in about 20-30 minutes. Overall it's good and still one of my favorite ramen spot in the area.

There are only a handful of ramen places in Boston that I think are top tier and this one definitely makes the cut for me, especially their Shoyu 1910 ramen which is a traditional light shoyu and dashi based broth. I honestly can't fully describe how flavorful and rich the broth tastes. The noodles were also perfectly cooked and the chashu pork was so tender and would break apart upon contact with my chopsticks. The presentation is also absolutely beautiful (as pictured). The restaurant is pretty small and you need to get on a wait-list to get seated by the wait is definitely worth it. There are also many cool stores to hang out at in the area while you wait.

Come for the ramen, stay for the fried chicken. What we got: Karai Shoyu (spicy shoyu) Gankara Miso (spicy miso) EXTRA-crispy karaage with garlic ponzu Usually, ramen places excel at the broth and fall short with the chashu and add-ins. However, Ganko's broth fell short. Both the miso and shoyu were under-salted. The spicy shoyu broth was also very fatty, which overwhelmed the flavors. I had to ask for soy sauce to add. The noodles, charsu, ground pork, menma, and other ingredients were perfect, though. The outstanding dish was the karaage. How do you go wrong with extra-crispy fried chicken? It came out piping hot. Perfectly cooked, juicy, tender - I already want more. The garlic ponzu was a nice juxtaposition from the fatty ramen. The staff are very friendly and efficient. You order before seating. When a table is available, they seat you, and your order is sent to the kitchen. Dishes come out reasonably fast. The restaurant is small. In the interior, the music is a bit loud, maybe to make you eat faster, but it can make it hard to have a conversation. I wish it was a bit quieter. Overall, the ramen wasn't perfect, but it was close. When I return, I will try one of the clear broth ramen and, of course, an order of karaage.

I LOVE this spot! By far the most authentic ramen in Boston, and possibly that I've ever had. Everything is cooked fresh and made perfect each time--they've really perfected their flavors and have it down to a science so that each bowl captures a depth of unique flavor you can't count on. Even with their popularity, service is fast and the vibes are chill. I can't stop craving this ramen with its bouncy noodles and delectable broths!!

Are any of the broths chicken-based (pork-free)?

I believe there is it one that is chicken-based, and another one that is vegetable-based. Enjoy!

Is this place safe for people for with a nut allergy?

It appears so. If you're also allergic to sesame seeds, this is not the place for you.

How much is their delivery charge and do they have ramen with a chicken broth?

    They dont deliver. Takeout only.

    Is there any vegan option?

This one does not, but if you want vegan ramen, go to Oisa Ramen! The chef there is cool and the ramen is SUPER good and flavorful.

Yes, there are broths that are vegetarian and its really good, but they also use bonito flakes (which I disregard) so ask them which soup has what broth
