I was going in with high expectations due to the great yelp reviews. Perhaps, I shouldn't have. The food was not that great relative to what you can find in NOVA. What I tried. 1. Large bowl of Pho #4 special $12 included a soda and either an egg roll or spring roll. The Pho was ok, very light tasting broth, little meat. For a restaurant that specializes in Pho, this was quite disappointing. 2. Bun Cha Gio $9 around 4 cut up egg rolls The serving size is huge. Decent egg rolls, thin wrapper, very crispy. Placed the rest of our order and just waited. I ordered ice tea, it turned out to just be sweet tea with way too much sugar. My beef ball pho; flavorless. Yeah, so that pretty much sums up how many more times I'll be going back. Never. One of the worst pho restaurants I've been to, and I've been to hundreds all over the east, west, even the south coasts. Also, when we went up to pay, the tall old guy at the cash register looked over to our table, then back at us with scrunched up eyebrows asking us, "You finished eating?" We said yeah. It was great getting to meet some new faces namely Ruth and Neal, I hope you all can make it out regularly! Alright, so I've been fighting a stubborn cold all week, so I was due for some hot pho action. My only dilemma was that I decided to give up red meat for Lent (I know...the horror!). So I tried pho ga for the first time, a small bowl, since I also ordered some summer rolls. Pho ga is basically chicken noodle soup, except the noodles are vermicelli rice noodles. I liked that the broth had little, teeny pools of oil and it tasted very delicate, but lacked any real depth, even for a chicken noodle soup. Even after adding sriracha and all the other condiments/veggies...something was missing! The chicken itself was fine, just pieces of white meat, not so thinly sliced, not seasoned. I guess I'm a fan of strong flavors, so this just didn't cut it for me. To top it off the small bowl was teensy! Like thimble small, ok maybe not that small. I ate it all and was still so hungry! I kid you not. After some internal struggling, I decided to order something else, I was really, really hungry. This time I went with the pork vermicelli noodle bowl (Bun Thit Nuong). Pork is the other white meat right?! I didn't cheat! right?! I hope not...I don't think so... Anyways, the pork was yummy! Grilled, so it had a nice, smokey char flavor, it came with the same pickled veggies they put on bahn mi (strips of radishes and carrots), also bean sprouts, cilantro, diced scallions, lettuce strips and a ton of rice noodles. I'm at a loss of why this restaurant has four stars. I'm not only reviewing bad restaurants, I'm reviewing all that I go to and I've hit a bad streak. I thought this would be different after hearing a recommendation from a friend. I walked in and there was only one other table of two eating- it was 4:30PM on a Tuesday so not dinner time yet which was okay. The "waiter" did not get up when we came in, instead pointed to a table by the window so we sat down. He had the silverware containers on one of the dining room tables and proceeded to continue to dry off the chopsticks and spoons that came out from the wash. He then brought us menus and walked back off. Not saying a word, not welcome to Pho 98, how are you, go f yourself, nothing. Did not ask us if we wanted anything to drink. He went back to drying his chopsticks. I finally had to say something for him to come back over and take our order. I asked for a glass of Merlot and had to point to it on the menu because he didn't understand what I was asking for. Left the table mumbling something, I don't know what because he really still hasn't said anything to us at this point. He came back to the table with the waters and then a few more minutes later returned with a bottle of syraz, pointed and said "ok"? I just said fine. Our food came out and I still had no wine. The only other table in the restaurant left and their dirty table sat there for us to look at for over 10 minutes. The waiter and two of his co-workers were sitting on the other side of the restaurant talking so loudly that it was all that we heard. (only reason I put noise level as average) No one ever came over to check on us. The food was so horrible I added a ton of sriracha and hoisin to mask it. Four small shrimp, four scallops (best part of it), and the squid which I couldn't eat because it was so chewy. This was the seafood pho. Had to get his attention again for wine and water. Never asked how the food was but at this point, I don't think he spoke much English so I didn't see the point in relaying my impressions on the service. Went to the counter and paid. Someone finally came through the restaurant to clean the table with a dirty three tiered cart. Why would you not just get a tray and put the three dishes on it is beyond me. If I had a restaurant that for an hour time period only had two customers come in, I would sure as hell me making every effort to give them some sort of attention to ensure that they come back. I think three stars here is being a little nice, but I don't have the heart to give this place two stars. I'm glad Ruth's review gave me a heads up that the broth would be lighter. I understand that Vietnamese food is often about being light, and having a delicate balance, but when it comes to Pho, I want a good, solid, hearty Pho. The pho here is a bit wimpy both in taste and proportions. I'm really disappointed that this is the case, because when I walked in, I assumed that the pho here would be comparable to Falls Church/Houston/Orange County hell, even Vietnam. Unfortunately it falls short. Where do I begin? We already know that the broth was light. There wasn't too much pho flavor to it, and I understand that there are reasons for lighter broth. The color of broth tends to darken up later the longer it sits. (Pho is fine for up to a week when refrigerated, and the best stage at which to enjoy Pho is never on the first day, always at least the second or third day; all about letting flavors mellow). I also know that some people do a combination of beef and chicken stocks since beef stock takes forever, and chicken speeds up the cooking process as well as sweetens up the broth. Pho can also be lighter intentionally, but usually good light pho will still have a good flavor to it. This pho's flavor was just shy of the middle of the bell curve. It was definitely lacking, and even Pho 75's consistently boring broth was a shade better than the broth here. That's okay though, that's what hoisin sauce is for? But wait! When I went to squeeze out some of that delicious "chocolate" sauce, a lot more came out than expected. It wasn't as viscous as other places I've been to. Not accusing them of diluting it to save money, just saying it was a little runny. The broth does not take well to hoisin. I thought it would improve the taste, but then it just tasted like hoisin sauce. The temperature of the pho was not as hot as I'd have liked. Call me a stickler for details, but my vegetables should at least wilt a little when they hit the soup. As a plus side, the vegetable plate did come with culantro, typically not found in Americanized-Vietnamese establishments. But this alone is not enough to merit four stars. (Or three for that matter). Proportionally speaking, I got tons of meatballs which were okay. The eye round was lacking, which is fine since I think it's the most overrated cut. Tripe was present, but nothing memorable. Brisket on the other hand, was fatty just the way I like it. Unfortunately it was STILL a little tough compared to what pho brisket should be. Okay. Now I'm REALLY being a stickler for details. Pho noodles were typical dried noodles. I really would love to find a place that uses fresh noodles. It's really not that much more expensive, believe it or not, and I think it makes a world of difference. So the pho was okay. For the large, it was shy of being enough to fill me up, but being from the south, I have an appetite that rivals Kobayashi. (Is that even relevant anymore? Should I have said Joey Chestnutt??) A combination bowl in large size that I got was $8.50 before tax. Add on the cafe sua da to bring my total over $12 after tax. Now hang on, the cafe sua da was another bit of disappointment. They put way too much water into it, and when I lifted the filter, the coffee was all the way to the top. "That's fine" I thought to myself; I just get more. Unfortunately, the blend of coffee they use is really strong on chicory, which has this soapy aftertaste that I do not like. You might be a fan, but I am not. The taste was a little (re: a lot) different from what I'm used to, and not so much in a good way. Okay, so now that I'm done bashing the place, let me at least give them some praises. For one, the location is... not the worst. Being off of Lee Jackson sort of helps. Secondly, the service was super quick just like any other pho restaurant. There's not much prepwork that goes into making pho. They just put the noodles and beef in the bowl, and pour stock over it, and there you go. The staff wasn't friendly, but they weren't unfriendly either. Pretty typical Vietnamese restaurant experience where if you're not used to being rushed, it might actually come off as rude. The prices weren't so bad either. It's about the same to get a large dac biet bowl anywhere else in the area. But hey, if it's the same you might as well try the other establishments, because this place came off as being "just okay" with me. Sorry Pho 98. I knew nothing about Pho before coming to this restaurant. Literally. Nothing. My husband practically dragged me, and I am SO glad that he did. I've been to other Pho restaurants since, and Pho 98 was definitely my favorite. We both got the lunch special, which included a drink, a large bowl of Pho, and a spring or summer roll. I got the spring, he got the summer. Mine was better... but then again, I'm not a fan of peanut sauce. He loved his. I had NO clue what to order as far as the Pho was concerned... the menu was incredibly daunting and foreign (literally) for a newcomer like me. I went with something that sounded familiar (I can't even remember what it was... but it was beef of some type... I know that doesn't help), and, because he knows me so well, my husband ordered the chicken. When the bowls arrived, I was dazzled by the huge plate of basil, jalapenos, limes, and bean sprouts to add to the soup - YUM! I tossed in a little (a lot) of everything (including some Sriracha) and dug in... eek. The meat - whatever kind it was - was fatty. I know that's how it was SUPPOSED to be... but it just ain't my thang. My husband, the all-knowing wonderful man he is, pushed the bowl of chicken Pho across the table at me and swapped. Humbling moment for me... but I am grateful he did it. I did like what I ate of the beef one, but the chicken one was more my speed. It was DELICIOUS. We went on a rainy day in the middle of the afternoon (around 2pm) and the entire experience was just heavenly. The server was awesome, too - cute little dude who made funny jokes. Jeff W mentioned this place to me so I had to come and check it out while I was down visiting my parents. The place is a nice moderately sized establishment, roomy and brightly lit. Simple asian decor with an auspicous display of champagne and wines behind the wall separating the kitchen and the dining area. The wait staff was attentive and expedient. I ordered my usual metric for assessing a pho house; the spring roll and pho bo (beef). P8 on the menu was the pho bo with well done briskets and well done eye round steak cuts and ve (cross cut meat with fat and tendon). The spring rolls were nicely prepared. Good crispy exterior with hot soft stuffings without a lot of oil dripping off it. The herb side plate had spearmint, ngo gai (culantro), fresh hot peppers and sprouts. The pho broth was nicely meaty in taste. It had good substance to the flavor. The meats were generous and the noodles were not clumpy. The only shortcoming was that the ve was not 'crunchy' enough. The residual taste of anise was present but not over powering. Overall a very good pho bo. read more

Today, for lunch, I met up with James L. for some long awaited Pho 98. I assure you, it was worth the wait. I have eaten at all the Pho restaurants in Herndon/Reston and this place blows them out of the water. I almost want to go back and change any of those reviews that are 4 or 5 stars. The broth, clear, needed NOTHING. It wasn't salty and didn't taste like someone dropped an MSG bomb in there. Meat was plentiful and tasted fresh. The toppings, of course, were all fresh. Great, delicious pho! The broth here is so savory and rich.. but not grossly oily either. I've been here twice so far and each time the pho was so yummy. I always get a small bowl and it has plenty of noodles and meat. I got a spring roll and it was crunchy, fat, and tasty. This place doesn't skimp on the spring roll fillings like some other places do. We did have a slight problem the last time we went, when I asked for no cilantro in my pho. They gave me extra cilantro in mine but none in my boyfriend's. He was fine with that but I had to grab the server and tell them I had asked for no cilantro. He did bring another one out for me right away, but on the way to the kitchen he stopped by to tell another staff member, who looked angry/disgusted at what my server said. Ah Brandi K... I must squash your dreams of a drama filled pho review and stick another 4 stars in the air for my homies at Pho 98! I've never ordered the spicy beef soup, but Brandi, if in fact they base the beef soup broth off of seafood... I would be right in your shoes! Annoyed and felt deprived of my yummy soul warming goodness! However that is not what happened to me. I called and placed a to go order for my standard Pho Tai, simple broth and beef, no tripe for this girl. I love the broth here, rich, golden, flavorful and not overly salty. The toppings were packaged separately of course. The veggies were fresh and crisp. I also ordered the summer rolls... oh how I love them! I could probably eat them every day for the rest of my life. They are crunch and fresh and oh good lord... I am gonna end up ordering them for dinner! So here is by beef with the joint... when you order Pho Tai... right before they bring it to your table, they throw a handful of raw beef in your bowl and it cooks in that hot broth in about 8 seconds flat. When you order the food to go, they cook it first. If it's cooked and you put it in that broth, it turns to tough rubbery nonsense! In most of the other Pho places around NoVa... they will give it to you raw if you ask. Pho 98 is not one of those places. They tell me it's against health code. Definitely a great lunch spot for people working in the area. The broth is good (I particularly like the spicy beef with sate' sauce) and the meats are very tender. They seem to have substantially more beef in their soups than other pho restaurants I've been to. When the weather is warm and I'm not in the mood for a hearty soup I like to get the bu'n which is spring rolls, grilled pork and herbs on a bed of cold vermicelli. Simple and yet flavorful and refreshing. Great contrast of textures and the flavor of the pork is outstanding. I'm normally a big fan of the Vermicelli Noodle dishes, but for some reason I wasn't that impressed here. Who else is convinced that the quality of the Pho is inversely proportional to the quality of the restaurant in terms of cleanliness (check out the bathrooms), overall appearance, and overall customer experience? In other words, the best Pho comes from the least fancy dives. That being said, when I walked into the well-decorated, pristine, and carpeted Pho 98 in Chantilly, I was expecting the Pho to be less than stellar. Thankfully, I was wrong. Their $10 lunch special includes a large bowl of Pho (or grilled rice dish) plus a spring (or summer) roll plus a drink. This is a good deal and the food is delicious. For the Pho connoisseur, the lighter broth might not rank up there with the rich dark elixirs that simmer for days but that never bothered me - what's more important to me is that the broth is served steaming hot, is freshly made, and has a noticeable "depth of flavor". Give me a crisp spring roll, some fresh jalapeno slices, bean sprouts, a wedge of lime and I'm all set. Pho 98 was a nice discovery in a sea of food chains. read more

This is my favorite place to eat at the moment, so I'm giving it all 5 stars. This is the place to go for a good, affordable meal. The mango shake is the best thing I've ever tasted. You have to try one if you like mango. It is fresh, sweet perfection! My favorite dish is the B1- grilled pork and crispy spring rolls over rice noodles. You get the best of everything. I often go to Pho 98 just because it is much closer to my house compared to driving all the way to the Eden Center. I usually just get a small pho. The jus is not flavored well and always ask for raw meat or to be put on the side otherwise it is always overcooked. One dish that I am never disappointed is the Vermicelli with their spring rolls. What I like about it at Pho 98 is that they put more than just 2 skinny spring rolls in it...the whole bowl is full of well-made-taste-good spring rolls. The fish sauce to go with it is not too watery...still would recommend to ask for extra lime to put in it but the dish is fulfilling and with fresh vegetable. Definitely a good place for the cold days of the winter to get some pho, and a good place for warmer days to enjoy some vegetable. read more

I've been to this restaurant several times, and it is definitely a decent Pho place. The veggies are always fresh, and the broth of the soup (which I believe is key) will not disappoint you. The spring rolls and summer rolls are quite good, and we've never ordered something we didn't like. The wait staff is pleasant and always polite. The place has always been very clean. A bit more busy during lunch than dinner, but we've never had to wait for a table. Prices are reasonable and service is very quick. Great for a business lunch. Definitely recommended. read more

One of the cleanest Pho restaurants I've eaten at. I'm not trying to be facetious but the place was open and very brightly lit which is somewhat uncharacteristic of some pho or asian restaurant. We came in a large group and ordered the gambit of dishes from the spicy noodles, traditional pho, bbq pork, and spring rolls. I enjoyed the spring rolls and my pho was decent. There wasn't anything distinctive to me about the restaurant but the pho was good. I actually for the Pho Tai Nam and some of the more unsavory bits where still left in the bowl. Guess what? I haven't had real pho in over 2 years. I've had "vegetarian" pho but let's be honest, it's not really pho without meat. Now that I'm partially back on meat, one of my first "welcome back" meals would most definitely be pho. My friend L suggested we meet up at Pho 98 because I had a craving and it was between our houses. I didn't even know this place existed! I even took a wrong turn and ended up in a trailer park. I don't expect service to be stellar at a pho restaurant considering how busy they were. The people want their pho! We were seated in the middle of a long table which I have no problem with. We are all friends and pho lovers here. I like that they have a diverse menu that is not just pho. Sometimes I want pho and sometimes I want a shrimp and vermicelli dish. Variety is great. I've come here many times to get my pho fix, solely because of its convenient proximity to South Riding. The pho is consistently decent and the service, consistently bad. The staff barely understand/speak English, so don't expect friendly conversation, but do expect communication through pointing and nodding. Majority of the time, they seem to avoid eye contact so that they don't have to serve you. If you order the spring rolls (which are more than decent), it will pain them to bring you extra plates. I would definitely not go out of my way to eat here, but nights of drinking call for short drives to whatever pho you can get your hands on! read more

Since they told me it could take a couple of hours, I had some time to kill and ended up here for lunch. Typical lunch crowd was in full swing without being too overbearing. I didn't have to wait and I managed to snag a table over by the TV to watch some CNN. The server immediately came to my table to check in and see what I wanted to drink. I ordered a glass of water and a mango shake to start off with. The mango shake looked so good after seeing it at someone else's table that I could not resist my urge!! After she went and got my drinks, I decided to go with the small bowl flank steak pho. They actually give you an option of getting the small bowl or large bowl. This is the first time I've seen this offer at a Vietnamese restaurant because usually it is one size fits all. There was only a .70 cent difference between a large and small bowl. The size portions are NOT overly significant different anyway. I noticed in some of the other reviews that some have said the broth of the pho was bland and lacked flavor. I feel differently. I thought it was very flavorful and had the right consistence. I added a little soy and brown sauce to it which simply enhanced what it already had. I would never say it was bland by any means though. My only complaint would be the steak. I had a lot of fat on the steak which absolutely drives me crazy and I stripped the fat from the steak itself so it wouldn't be on there. It didn't leave me with much to go with. There were more than enough noodles in it. If you love noodles such as myself then you're in for a treat. Truly AMAZING. Final thoughts -- This is a winner winner Vietnamese dinner (or lunch in my case). Very reasonably priced and good quality service on all ends. Might I add my shake was really nice too. read more

Yum! I am so happy I finally tried this place. I drive by it weekly and don't know why I never really stopped in. I go to El Fresco's and the drycleaner's next door but never felt compelled to try it, till I read the reviews. Broth is delicious, service is extremely efficient, and crispy spring rolls are amazing. The wrap is so light and crispy, and the filling is so tasty...Only minor complaint I have is to serve it with lettuce and mint to wrap the roll in. Still delicious and will be there often. read more
