The pictures I saw online and even when looking at the sandwich before eating didn't convince me, but that crunch is present and what sold it for me. We came here with high hopes for some good coffee 2xs. The first visit, we ordered 1 bo sa (lemongrass beef bánh mì) and 1 Ong beo coffee. The coffee was made perfectly and with care (as shown in the video). Our second visit was just for the same coffee 2 days later with a different Server. I tried this place to compare it to the newly opened location in Fairfax. It's been open for awhile, so I expected things to be pretty buttoned up. The food is consistent with Fairfax's. I tried their dac biet/ combo and grilled pork. The filling is good but their bread sucks. It's so hard and not in the standard banh mi baguette hard. It completely fell apart and had no give. The bread here is noticeably wider than most banh mi--super fluffy on the inside with a crispy crust, which I loved. The fillings are very generous, with so much meat and tons of flavor. At first this place scared me because they had some rough reviews. I often have clients in Chantilly so I decided to stop by here for lunch before work... wow I was impressed. Their signature Banh Mi Ong Beo Banh mi was phenomenal. A medley of bbq pork stuffed inside a very fresh baguette with a decent amount of spread - so good! I'm very picky with my Banh Mi since I either go to Banh Mi DC or Banh Mi Oi, but this place will definitely be in my rotation if I'm in Chantilly. I also tried their Beef skillet plate. I feel like this place has improved so much compared to a few years ago, so I keep coming back for their fresh banh mi and Viet coffee drinks. It's small and they offer a combo of banh mi and viet coffee or an upgrade... I get that there wasn't many people in there which is why they are so slow. I mean turtle slow. I normally get the combination banh mi, but I decided to get the grilled pork one, which was apparently highly recommended...never again. The bánh mì's here are averagely good and not bad at all. The Vietnamese coffee is strong as it should be. The spring rolls (goi cuon) are good, but missing pork belly and the peanut sauce is a bit on the sweeter side. The bò né did not come out sizzling and needed more sauce to dip the bread in. I did like the marinated beef. I would come back to try the bánh mì chảo (which features Vietnamese meatballs). They have turned it around to the point where they compete well with (and even beat in some cases) DC or Nhu Lan. They don't skimp on meat where I feel like I need to order extra (looking at you DC). Placed an order online for this banh mi place for lunch as it is closer than anything in falls church or arlington, i ordered a banh mi bbq xa xiu (pork) which not of place have along with an avocado smoothie and a ong beo cofffee and egg rolls. Egg rolls was still crunchy when it gets to me and the taste is very good. The banh mi was filled with a lot of meat which i appreciate and lots of vegetables too ( I didn't put all of it on mine) Coffee was creamy and perfect, I might say i prefer this coffee over tea dm coffee (if i'm dare). Price was a bit pricey for uber but still worth it if you ever crave a banh mi. This one one of the banh mi place in chantilly so you wouldn't have to drive 30 - 40 mins for a banh mi again. Went to Banh Mi Ong Beo for the first time and yes! One of the best Banh mi in the DMV. We got the combination and grilled pork, and both were so good! Generous amount of pickled veggies as well. Based on some of the other reviews who complained that there wasn't enough filling, we didn't have that issue at all! Really great sandwiches and I'm eager to try some of the other options. My suspicion is that they use a pre-made Lee's coffee concentrate mixed with something made in house - regardless, it tasted very good! Service was a bit on the slower side. The interior is super cute, and there were already a good amount of customers here around 10:30 am on a Saturday. I ordered some banh mi and I got mine with a combo (includes a coffee) and was pleasantly surprised at the banh mi. Usually I don't like a lot of banh mi spots because of the baguettes, but theirs is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and it's thicker as well to hold better in your hands. The iced coffee (just regular coffee, not Vietnamese coffee) didnt really have a flavor, even though I ordered hazelnut flavor. But overall, the banh mis that we ordered were super tasty! Vietnamese bánh mì is really known for its fresh, crispy bread, so that was a a bit disappointing here--the bread tasted hard, almost like it was a day old. The pickled vegetables were also quite sweet, which threw off the balance with the meats. I also tried the bánh bao, but it had too much breading and very little filling. The filling also included celery, which made it feel less like the traditional Vietnamese style. Overall I would give this plate a 3.5 rating, but 4 stars is what I think their true potential could be! Price-wise this isn't bad. This can compare to some of my favorite places in Eden in pricing, and the quality of the banh mi delivered. Their bread is made in-house and they are well sized loaves with excellent texture! I enjoyed the taste of the pate and butter, so the foundational parts are good. I saw some negative comments on how much meat is in the banh mi, and I actually thought it was a good amount, generous even, compared to some places in Eden. The pictures don't always do it Justice if you open the banh mi wide, instead of considering the cross-section of your bite. I tried #6 ham and pate (I don't like head cheese) and the #4 xiu mai / meatballs. When you add the pickled veg, it is a well-balanced and -filled sandwich. The xiu mai could use more tomato sauce in it! When you see three meatballs, you think it might not be sufficient but with the spread on the bread, it's a good ratio! When you close the sandwich and start biting it, the meatballs end up a little smashed in there (like I've seen served at other banh mi places) and you see the ratio better. I eat my banh mi at home, so when I get my food to go, I ask for the pickled veg on the side to avoid things getting soggy. I heard the che was good, but the serving size of one cup for $3.75 is too pricy; I think for that size, the price should be closer to $3. I tried the avocado smoothie here, and it was not it, I would not get it again. It was very milky without a good avocado flavor. My favorite avocado smoothie at Thanh Son Tofu has a strong avocado flavor and more subtle sweetness, I think it might be made with only avocado, condensed milk, ice, and water. At this place, it clearly had milk added and ended up tasting like a vanilla milkshake (derogatory). Service was nice, but when we went, there was only a set of two customers waiting for their orders, and my six banh mi order took a long time. The restaurant setting itself isn't much, I was confused by the name being Kim Lan and the signage inside says Banh Mi Ong Beo. Overall, I'll be back. The banh mi are good, and I want to try more of the options on the banh mi menu. I hope service speed improves because it needs to in order to meet the patronage I think it deserves! read more
