Overall: 3.75 I came here for dinner on a weekend and boy was it a wait. It took almost an hour from getting a table to waiting for our food to arrive. Once we got our food, it was quickly devoured because it was quite good, I got the Bun Bo Hue (with mild spice) and I had no pho-remorse (the moment you kick yourself for ordering something that is not pho when everyone else did and is happily slurping their noodles). Just the right level of spice. I tried a little bit of the pho and it was okay; was very happy with my BBH. I wish I could say the food was worth the wait, but I will be forgiving since it was a Saturday night. I guess the moral of the review is don't come here if you're hangry. We ordered togo food via Uber Eats and frankly the food was not edible. There is no Vietnamese would make the spring roll like they did. The wrap is thick (think burrito size thick). It's full of big chunky thing like huge squid cut, huge cucumber ... someone was super lazy here. It's loosely wrapped and slapped together inside microwave plastic (two in one). I've been to a few Pho 14 restaurants and they're relatively the same in terms of their food and ambiance, but the service can vary depending on which one you go to. FOOD: I'm a huge fan with the authenticity and flavors of Pho 14's dishes. From their rice and vermicelli plates, to their pho, you will not be disappointed! Each entree is around $10-$14 and all are good portions. AMBIANCE: The decor has vintage Asian vibes, and the restaurant is very dim, so the establishment itself is pretty cool looking. Keep in mind that it can get very loud here, so probably not the best place for an intimate one on one conversation. It's a fairly small space too, so I don't recommend going with groups. When I went during the summer, their AC wasn't on/working? I'm not sure if it's always not functioning or if they voluntarily choose to leave it off... Something to keep in mind if you're trying to escape the summer heat. SERVICE: I can understand when customer service at an Asian restaurant is lacking, it adds to the authenticity. But the service here was almost non-existent. When we were sat down, we didn't get our water until our food got to our table (this obviously added to the frustration I had with the AC not on during a hot day). And if the servers didn't bother to give us water when we sat down, there was absolutely no way they were going to refill it throughout the night. If you're lucky enough to wave them down from the fan they're sitting in front of, you'll have to ask for more water. And on top of the lack of service, I had to bring my own check up to the register and wait until someone came out from behind the kitchen to ring us up. Although the food is great here, the service was so terrible that I will definitely not be coming back. I recommend hitting up their other Pho 14 locations (like the one on Columbia Rd) if you want a better experience. read more

Pho 14 is sort of like that random Chinese takeaway joint you go to for convenience, if not necessarily the gourmet food. The restaurant is quite nice and pleasant to dine in, so in that respect it certainly differs from your average takeaway joint. The food is good, but it doesn't compare to a Pho Viet (located nearby in Petworth), for example. My biggest gripe with the food is probably the vegetarian broth, which is made with apple and tastes incredibly sweet to me. They do have lots of happy hour specials (for dine-in) throughout the week, so if you're looking for just a nice spot to grab some Vietnamese food, this a fine place to do it - it's just not going to blow your mind or anything. read more

Three and a half stars, this is probably the closest to Virginia standards I've tasted in pho beef broth in DC. Pricing consistent for DC. Apparently they truck in the bread for their banh mi from VA.... not as crusty as expected, and the baguette sizes are on the conservative side. The banh mi are otherwise authentic, and made with fresh ingredients. Goi cuon are similarly smaller than expected, but I liked that they have an even ratio of shrimp and cha lua, and the peanut ratio is higher than average in the pre-mixed dipping sauce. This is the best pho I've ever had. They have one of the few if not only 100% vegetarian options for pho in DC. Many other places, while they have "vegetarian options" don't actually have vegetarian broth which defeats the purpose of a vegetarian dish. Their fresh vegetarian garden rolls are so delicious too. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great pho dish. I've so been to all three locations and all three are great. Good service. Delicious food. Never a let down. Just had an unsettling exchange with a Pho 14 staff. The staff refused to deliver 1.8 miles away (within their 2 mile radius) citing that they do not deliver to Northeast, and that it would take an hour and a half to deliver (11 minutes according to google maps). Curious why Northeast is a cutoff, curious why she felt the need to exaggerate about delivery time and lie about their delivery policy. Wow, I can't believe my first review of this place. I was such a pho n00b then. After many visits and trying out lots of different pho, Pho 14 is my favorite. They always get your pho right- the noodles are the perfect texture, flavorful broth. YUM. The pho chay (veggie pho) is my favorite- the fried tofu is excellent and the veggies are plentiful. Brocolli, carrots, mushrooms, lettuce. YUM. The pho ga (chicken pho) is my second favorite. The chicken is always white meat and delicious. The appetizers here also rock. The tofu veggie spring rolls are my favorite (the peanut sauce is delicious!) followed by the chicken skewers. They now serve alcohol and doubled in size. This means the wait is less redonkulous! Tough little mushrooms insecure with their masculinity. Why so tough?? What I do to you? Coconut juice- quite nice, refreshing, but overpriced for its size. Entrées weren't bad by any measure and they had attractive presentations, but none were memorable. How about some dessert to add some zing, yo?! I had my heart set on dau hu nuoc gung (tofu in sweet ginger sauce) or some Vietnamese yogurt (I make my own, so a little competition I invite). Know what they said when I voiced my excited request? I have been meaning to try Pho 14 food and when the stars aligned that one Saturday afternoon, I did just that! And, at the original location in Columbia Heights. This place is, surprisingly, a lot bigger than expected due to proper use of space. The decor is very zen-like, clean, and representative of Vietnamese culture. I am extremely disappointed in the dime-a-dozen Asian establishments that may serve delicious food on sticky tables in a cafeteria-like atmosphere with minimal service/interaction with patrons. Pho 14's mission is to prove that you can have an affordable and delicious meal in a completely cozy and clean environment. I was surprised to find a pretty comprehensive menu, but although I wanted to try the grilled fish vermicelli bowl, I had to choose pho as my introductory dish. I opted for a regular size with meatballs and as add-ons, the scallions in oil as well as thinly sliced white onions in vinegar. The add-ons are roughly $1 each and definitely take your pho-eating experience to a whole new level. The broth had sweet and salty notes, while delivering deep beef flavor, which a lot of pho establishments fail to produce. I was informed, after my meal, that the vegetarian pho broth is made with fuji apples and various vegetables, so that will definitely be something to try next time I visit Pho 14. I have no complaints about the service. The servers are easily spotted, so you don't feel the need to get up to flag one down. My server was a young female who seemed a bit nervous (perhaps new), but she tried her best to answer any questions I had. Their pho broth is good but the regular pho was so disappointing in the way it was served, and that's not something I'd normally care about! With the size of the bowl and the meager amount of broth (come on - I'm here for the broth!), I felt like I just had a bowl full of noodles that was hard to eat. We arrived around 5:15ish, so we were seated right away. The interior decor is pretty and serene. Service was good as well. I didn't love the seafood spring rolls as the veggies were too crunchy and overpowering. I could barely taste the seafood. However, the pho was excellent! I had beef broth with fake beef and tofu. As a pesca-vegetarian, I've had a good amount of fake meat products, but never fake beef. To my delight, it had the same texture and taste as real beef. Not that I miss meat, but some fake meat products (i.e. chicken) are disgusting. The noodles were thick, more like spaghetti, which has not been my experience at Vietnamese restaurants. The restaurant was packed even on a Monday night. It might be the chilly weather but it just might be that it's the only Vietnamese restaurant in the area. It's not a bad place for pho at all. It did a good job catering to the clientele in the area. The summer rolls were good with a milder dipping sauce. We liked the ice water with crushed ice alot! The broth was good but not as flavorful as the regular pho. The noodles were cooked nicely but the meat was well-done when served and limited in quantity even in a large bowl. Frankly, I never would've tried out Pho 14 on my own, because it looks so unremarkable from the outside - sort of dingy with a you-shall-not-pass feel to it. But a friend of mine insisted that it was the best, & so I gave it a shot. God, I wish I'd done it sooner. With that out of the way, the crux of this review & my feelings about Pho 14: I would eat their ban bo nuong every sing day, forever. No question. It's seriously one of the best meals I've ever had. The beef is grilled & seasoned to perfection - no weird pieces of fat or gristly cuts, just sweet, crispy, chewy strips of thin-cut meat.. I don't typically love fish sauce, but theirs is light &v sweet, the perfect topping to wet the salad & bring it all together. The vegetables are fresh, crisp, colorful. It's just such a CLEAN meal - pretty, easy to eat, balanced. Scarf-worthy. I am actually disappointed at the end of one of these bowls, like, "Are you sure there's not a little bit left somewhere?" I was searching for a new pho place-preferably on the yellow line since it was freezing cold that day-and Pho 14 totally hit the spot and took the chill out of my body! We arrived around 7pm on a Friday night and it was quite crowded already, which I view to be a good sign. Tables were a little too close for comfort. We were seated, greeted, and brought waters quickly. We never saw a drink menu leading me to believe they don't serve alcohol here, not an issue just a note. The menu is typical Vietnamese-pho, vermicelli, banh mi, spring rolls, etc. we began with the spring rolls. I preferred these far more than those I had at Saigon Saigon recently. The rice paper was not gummy as I took issue with it being at Saigon Saigon. They were nicely filled with pork and shrimp and the peanut hoisin sauce was tasty. These came out within 5 minutes of us ordering them. Unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about the pho. It took much,much longer than I would expect, but when it did make its appearance, the broth was hot,hearty, and filling. I found it less salty than some places, which I appreciate so I don't have to drink a gallon of water with dinner. I ordered a "create your own pho". You have the choice of regular for $8.99 or large for $9.99. The regular was the perfect size for satisfaction but not gluttony. I opted for chicken broth and then you can choose up to 4 base toppings for no additional charge. I went with mushrooms,carrots, chicken (I chose light meat), and tofu (steamed is what I opted for). I'm not usually one for tofu but hey, I could have four toppings, so why not? There was plenty of chicken and tofu mixed in, and I found the amount of noodles to be perfect given the meat/noodle/broth ratio. My boyfriend had the bun bo hue dong ba- lemongrass spicy beef broth with cured pork and sliced beef. While I did not try any, the empty large bowl in front of him was quite telling. 2 Stars = "Meh. I've experienced better" This is according to the criteria set forth by yelp, in in this case the description is spot on. Maybe it was because I had such high hopes for this place. First thing first though, trying to find street parking around this place is a total bitch, so save yourself the trouble and pay the three bucks to park in target's parking garage.... Now onto the food. Like I said I had such high hopes for this place that I decided to be a total fat ass and ordered a large bowl of pho, a banh mi, and a coffee. To start off with the "large" bowl of pho is in fact a regular sized bowl. So I'm guessing their regular size pho is really in fact a hobbit sized bowl of pho. To compound this misnomer the bowel is mostly broth, with very little noodles and meat. The broth was pretty tepid and lacked the wonderful aroma of anise and ginger. Next onto the banh mi which was equally disappointing. Banh mi should be crunchy and when you bite into one it should be so beautify toasted that the crumbs on your plate should look like a dandruff comercial. This was definitley not the case. The bread was soggy and chewy. All you have to do it toast it for god's sake. Next onto my favorite part of banh mi--the creamy custard like aoili. In Pho 14's case I think the aoili was Helman's mayonnaise..... Maybe they could do coffee right? Wrong. Not the cafe du monde chickory coffee that slowly steeps through the table side filter to be poured on sweetened condensed that you would expect at any other Vietnamese place. In this case it was cold coffee that came from a big ass vat and cut with heavy cream. Weird and truely not Vietnamese. We were visiting Columbia Heights and had the hankering for pho. Yelp pointed us in the direction of Pho 14. The restaurant has a nice casual atmosphere with comfortable seating. We were greeted upon entry and offered our choice of seats. The bulk of the menu offers their pho options, basically a formula where you pick broth, add-ins, and meats/tofu. The pho was great, full of flavor, perfectly cooked noodles, and tons of hot, "fire" level spice as requested. We also ordered the rice dish 53 with grilled shrimp, carrot, and cucumber salads. The shrimp was insanely good and seasoned nicely. The rice mixed with the veggie salads made a nice light plate that didn't lack flavor. We also ordered the Vietnamese coffee, which knocked our socks off. Sweet, milky, and chilled, so it was nice to take a break from the D.C humidity and get a great meal and coffee drink. Pho 14 brings incredible happiness to my life. That may sound a little exaggerated, but it's true. I thought I would have to give up restaurant pho when I became a vegan, since it is traditionally cooked in animal broth. Pho 14's vegetarian pho chay is soup for my soul. Their ingredients are incredibly fresh - ever order pho and get a lime slice that is dried out and nasty? Yeah, that won't happen here. Time for an update! I am happy to report that Pho 14 has solidly garnered an extra star in my books (although my husband gives it a solid 5 stars). The last review I wrote had complaints about slow service. Things have changed in the past two years since I've been here because the wait staff was on point last night, even with a full house. One example: my husband got a (free) refill of his iced tea while he still had a good third of his first drink remaining. The wait staff was extremely attentive and kind (even after hubs spilled most of drink #2....whoops!) and we were served quickly. Yet, we never felt rushed with our food. Great balance. The spring rolls are DIVINE. See my picture for a visual. Expertly wrapped, stuffed to the gills with sprouts, vermicelli, pork and shrimp, with a great mild dipping sauce on the side (also good with a little dab of Sriracha sauce). My husband's pho was beyond his expectations. The broth alone is just heavenly, and you feel better about yourself upon consuming it. He had two cuts of meat in his pho, and one was way too cartilage-y for his liking. My bun chay (vegetable and tofu vermicelli) was more than I could devour in one sitting. Great ratio of noodles to sprouts to toppings. I also loved the sweet chili sauce that accompanied. It must be noted, as well, that the iced tea is arguably the best either of us have ever had in the DC area. Seriously tasted like freshly brewed jasmine tea on ice. Really, really good. Rather it is like a comfortable pair of slippers that you continually slip into, knowing that it is time to get a new pair. I'll be honest, this is a pretty convenient location, which is why I've been here more than a few times. I've given up ordering any type of meat in the pho-- every time I have, it has been fatty and/or rubbery. The last time I was there, I thought 'maybe this time will be different' and ordered chicken... no change. I picked it all out of the soup. I came here with a friend because we had been to the same chain in Addams Morgan and really liked the place. When we got here it was empty and no one was really that busy. We were seated shortly and given water and menus. After a short wait I ordered the Pho noodle soup with the fuji apple broth. I have never been to a Pho place that offers a veggie broth like this one. I really appreciate it. The other places use water and it just doesn't taste good as a base for broth. I admit the other location in AdMn seems to have a tastier Pho than here but they were okay. The pho was filling and did the trick for me but I can't say it was anything special. It's really terrible how spoiled I am from having Pho in San Gabriel Valley and Westminster in southern california. Really i can't imagine Viet food is better anywhere else but Vietnam. (though i've heard it isn't cause they give you less meat and stuff) Anyways. Pho 14 would be 3 stars in Cali but since we're on the side of the coast that doesn't face Asia I'll give it an extra star. It's not bad. The broth is a little too salty and my "large" didn't quite have as much meat as I would assume their largest size would. It also wasn't that big in general. I think this is the best pho place inside DC without having to leave the city. It's near Columbia Heights metro (next to the target). I got the pho #1 (It has all the assorted meats and is a decent sized portion). I also get the banh mi (combination 1- viet sandwich) with spring rolls (not fried). Delicious!!! While on a weekend vacation in DC, I couldn't leave the city without trying out it's local Vietnamese food. I found Pho 14 thanks to Yelp and automatically said "here's where I'm going" when I saw the great reviews it had. First of all, it has a great location, just two blocks away from the Columbia Heights metro station. The decor of the restaurant is simple, which makes you feel cozy and right at home as soon as you walk in. The prices are very reasonable, and the pho was great! I also had the egg rolls, which were really good. What more can I possibly say? Oh, yeah, the fact that I was seriously wanting to move to the apartment building right across the street (all the way from Miami) just so I could cross on over every day for dinner!!! Worst banh mi, broth, and eggrolls I've ever had in my life. Banh mi was made with a hoagie roll of some sort. Seeing as how banh mi literally refers to the French baguette that is supposed to be part of the sandwich, I think it's safe to say that they don't even serve banh mi. The broth had some strange tangy sweet flavor to it; I couldn't handle more than a sip of that. Eggrolls were mushy inside like they'd been through a dozen freeze-thaw-fry cycles. Also, menu on the website says prices vary by location. This location is a little more expensive than the menu online. So they're batting 0.000 on price and quality. read more
