This place is fantastic. My only regret is that I don't live closer otherwise I would be a regular. The service upon walking in was super-friendly and when I posed a question about my particular favorite coffee (a flat white) the owner/barista extraordinaire was happy to chat. Not only was he knowledgeable it was just a lovely exchange with someone who really cares about (and knows a lot about) coffee. All of this without the arrogance and attitude of a lot of local coffee shops I have tried. The Cortado was amazing and something I'll be having again. I also had a croissant from the case and it was fantastic. I came to Kennet Square for a dinner with friends at Talula's Table (AMAZING) and was thrilled to find Philter in the morning by chance - it's the reason I'll make the drive back to hang out for the day. Can't believe I've never tried this place before! One of my favorite coffee shops now. I had a cold brew coffee which was very strong and had great flavor. My boyfriend had a mocha iced coffee which he also loved. For breakfast I tried the egg and cheddar on a regular bagel which was better than I already expected it to be. A few of my favorite things about this place is that it didn't feel overly crowded inside, there were so many cacti and other plants around the shop, and there was tons of natural light compared to the usual dark and moody coffee shop. There were also plenty of outlets available to charge your devices. read more

Also, I don't usually get food other than a pastry or something at a coffee place, but they had mushroom soup- and I had to try it. It was fresh and yummy. I highly recommend that you try it. Let me start by saying... you can not rush perfection. And patience is a virtue. Remember that kids! In an age where people are less and less patient, it refreshing to see a place taking their time to DO IT RIGHT. So it takes a while for your coffee as it slowly drips and drips and drips. But what you have in end is something that transcends space and time. From the first sip to the last, its really something special. Our standard order when we go is threefold. Love the ice coffee and order that first, while that is dripping and dripping an so on, i usually enjoy an espresso. Lastly i buy bags of beans for the french press at home. read more

I had a delicious soy latte here recently, however it was not what I ordered. Upon walking in a asked specifically if they carried almond milk - they do. "Perfect I said, I'll have an almond surprise latte." Explaining that I don't have allergies and I like everything and to just make me something special. After waiting, I asked where is my latte? It was a regular soy latte. No flavor shots. Nothing surprising - only the fact that it was not almond milk. After explaining what I had wanted the barista had the gonads to tell me I should just try the regular if I didn't know what I wanted. I knew what I wanted, I still know what I wanted and it is not anything from this place. Hopefully they make it to the two year anniversary, hopefully they get their act together. read more

Absolute best cappuccino in the area! I've searched high and low for someone to get it right and Philter delivers. The drink was a perfect mixture of coffee and milk with a shimmering micro-foam on top. I also had a chocolate croissant which was flaky and not over powered by butter. The whole room is very neat, nicely decorated. Down to the labels of the trash and dish bins and the copper rings holding up labels everything is creatively presented. The coffee is freshly ground done the right way and presented beautifully. This spot is a must to pick up the morning coffee if you are visiting little ole Kennett Square. I must preface this review with a clear statement that I am an espresso fan. I love great, dark espresso. This coffee shop is a bit more than an hour from my house, and I drove here specifically to try out a new high-end coffee roaster in the area. It's definitely not bad! In fact, it's certainly better than average. If there were 'half stars,' I would very comfortably rate it a 3.5. But to me, a 4 star review would be something that I would drive an hour to visit again. I'm sorry to say it, but unless I learned of an advancement in their roasting, I would not drive that far. Stop by if I'm in the neighborhood?? ABSOLUTELY! Decor is great. Lots of coffee shop personality. My breakfast sandwich was ok. I had the egg, roasted pepper and Kennet mushroom sandwich. It was very sweet, and I don't care for sweet sandwiches - but that's probably my own fault for ordering the peppers. My espresso was incredibly light. That is not my expectation for espresso, and I don't think that's my fault at all. Most folks expect a very dark, robust drink when ordering espresso. To the credit of the counter staff, I asked to buy their two darkest roasts, one pound each. One of them said "everything we roast is very light." ...yup!! I sure do wish them luck, and I'm sure that tons of folks will adore the super-light roasts. But for this coffee but, I'm more than a little sad it wasn't on par with La Colombe or Ultimo. Hopefully they grow into that!!! Addition: I don't read other reviews before writing mine. After posting, I read a few others. Service issues were a common theme for a few. There are three young workers here on a Saturday morning. They are totally just 'hanging out.' Not a bad vibe if you are looking to attract college kids who don't really expect much in terms of quality service. For a more high end place, they need better training and supervision. A great manager or an owner looking over their shoulders would probably mean fewer dirty tables, a cleaner back counter area, and more of a "we want to WOW you" approach. Definitely another area for improvement. I think the problem is a disconnection from the look of the place and the running of it. So much potential, short on results. read more

Just enjoyed another perfect cup of coffee at Philter. Great atmosphere and super friendly service. Tried the Americano today thanks to a previous review that commented that it did not compare to the coffee across the street. Really? I was very skeptical of this reviewer because I have had ZERO experiences at Philter that were anything other than great. I come from San Francisco and am very much into my coffee. That said, Philter nails it! I usually get the Latte but I've found a new favorite in the Americano. Perfect balance of flavors. Period. I was so happy to get to talk with the owner/barista and talk about his taste preferences. My wife and I frequent this place and we have tried just about everything they serve. Awesome sandwiches, croissants, bagels, pastries etc.. Even the soda offerings are impressive. At $3.00 a generous cup or $4.00 for a large this place is also a great bargain for what they serve. This has become a favorite spot of mine! If I lived in the area, I would be a frequent here. The staff is one of the friendliest group of people I have encountered. From the bubble young lady that took my order to the knowledgeable barista that answered my questions. The owner really knows what he's doing with who he hires. They all seem passionate about the flavors of their coffees. I recommend the Columbia pour over they have ! It hit the spot with the smooth nature and fruity flavours. I recently moved back to the area from Boston, where great coffee joints are as plentiful as college students and accumulating snow in January. I have yet to find a place in Chester County that can hold a candle in comparison to my usual spot up there, however Philter has become my new favorite here at home. They have great coffee as well as a few different food options both savory and sweet. Their chicken salad is really good and changes in terms of preparation semi-regularly. I also adore the interior color/decor scheme. It has a very cozy, inviting vibe and it's much quieter than the places I've been to on the Main Line in terms of volume and foot traffic. It's the kind of place perfect for meeting a friend or reading the paper. I took one star off because their chairs aren't very comfortable - they are cute and bistro-style, but seemingly meant for an outdoor patio and are kind of stiff. They don't really jive with the otherwise comfortable vibe. Also, I've wished their cashier/baristas were a bit friendlier a few times (esp. after visiting Gryphon Cafe in Wayne - which has an exceptionally warm and welcoming staff). On my first visit to Philter, I wanted to try something other than the house coffee and asked the barista if she could describe or recommend any of the other offerings. I go out of my way to visit shops like this, and I'm lucky this one happens to be local. Chris, the owner, is so welcoming. He takes his craft seriously and it shows. The atmosphere he's created and the amazing coffee, tea, and food he offers are remarkable. You can always tell a professional by the cleanliness of their workspace and his is pristine. I come to this coffee shop at least once a week. I've gone to coffee shops all over and love to try new ones. This shop makes delicious coffee and lattes. Limited sweets available but they are pretty decent when there. They have a food menu with decent selections. The only problem I have is that they offer a small number of bagels each day and that's it. They are always out of certain bagels after 10 am. Why not just get more bagels? This is my absolute FAVORITE place to get coffee. Mum dragged me there, but after tasting their iced coffee, I fell in love. Unfortunately I forgot to ask for some room for cream, but surprisingly the taste of just the coffee itself (which is usually too much for me) was extremely pleasant. I actually drank most of it unsweetened until I remembered that I prefer it with milk and sugar. With those added, the drink was absolutely stupendous! I recommend this shop to everyone. My go-to coffee shop in the a.m. Very careful with mask-wearing and hand gels. Nice merchandise and great coffee! Now serving takeout sandwiches which are yummy. The tables outside are cool if you can snag one, and more tables outside outside across the street. Also have great half gallon drinks to drink cold or warm up at home, called 64s. A nice discovery in tiny Kennett Square, where most places were closed on a late Sunday afternoon. Had a really well made latte with an extra shot (so necessary after hours spent wandering around Longwood Gardens...), sitting outside and relaxing to the sound of the occasional car. The indoor ambiance was charmingly off-beat, with a menu written on an old beautifully framed window. Uhh....I really like the idea of this place, and the interior is really nice and hipster....which I like. However......I've been there twice now, and both time they have been out of A LOT of things! First time a seasonal iced tea was out, as was mushroom soup.....which is like a staple in Kennett Sq. The second time they were still out of these items, AND ran out of bagels and baguette to make breakfast sandwiches. It was a weekend, and we are in a tourist destination, yet they act like they have never seen a crowd before. It wasn't even that bad, but they were scrambling. It took close to 30min for us to get our sandwiches. They were all on regular sandwich bread, not the baguette they said they would be on since they'd already run out of bagel. The sandwiches themselves were ok, but not worth waiting 30min for. Also the chai latte tasted mostly like milk, with just a little spice. Not very frothy either, but I understand that's my personal preference. Having just moved here from Portland I really wanted to like this place, as finding eclectic coffee shops in this area is hard. My husband, our 2 year old, and I went here at someone's suggestion -- we live in South Philadelphia, but we were in Kennett Square for the afternoon. The atmosphere in Philter was so comfortable and airy -- it was such a nice place to be in. The iced coffee was just about the best I've ever had. No, it was the best. The fig/goat cheese muffins were awesome too. My husband actually suggested moving to Kennett Square just so we could be near Philter. Not sure that's going to happen, but I really wish I had more of that iced coffee right now. read more

Within 10 minutes from Longwood Gardens--what a great to visit after a long day of walking! Wonderful atmosphere with local art on the walls, friendly baristas and delicious coffee. As a resident of Va, not too awfully far from Annapolis- I was happy to see they serve Ceremony coffee! I'm familiar and see it a lot in the DC NOVA area-Never disappoints. I ordered a cafe au lait and they said they used the Ceremony brand "Thesis". My only regret is not having enough room to try another cup of something different..especially an espresso based drink. Went with a friend who ordered a macchiato and she said it was great! Good thing they sell the whole beans which I took home with me- I got the destroyer blend (espresso) which smells FANTASTIC! I love this place and I hope that it always remains in downtown Kennett. It has a wonderful, laid-back vibe with freshly roasted coffee and blends that I always enjoy. The food is also pretty good as well. About the only thing I don't love is the parking, but you cannot have everything! read more

At last, the doors have officially open to a warm and welcoming coffee shop in Kennett Square! The shop is very unique offering ample seating for 2 to 4 guests at beautifully hand crafted tables. Two window seats with barstools are also at the front of the store which overlook State Street as well as little tables on the sidewalk out front. The menu is impressive and offers breakfast, salads, soups, sandwiches and even a kids selection for warm drinks. Three coffee flavors plus a house blend is sure to treat any coffee lovers taste. A full selection of teas, 12 to be exact, from local tea Artisan, Mrs. Robinson's Tea Shop are available for those who indulge in specialty tea. Espresso available as well. All menu items are available Togo which is very convenient since I was able to take home some items for the family! Hours of operation allow for all to enjoy between 6am and 8pm Monday to Thursday and until 9pm Friday and Saturday.
