We stayed at Inn that houses Phatsy's which was convienant. We had a 5:30PM reservation at Phatsy Clines. There was hardly anyone at the restraunt and we when showed up at 5:15pm the hostess/busser looked annoyed that we were early. After 20 min our waitress took our order. "Oysters raw." That's what we ordered. The menu said, "fresh from Humbolt bay," so I figured there was a high potential for freshness, and it seemed like an opportune moment to introduce oysters to my wife. We received oysters topped with pickled ginger and lemon zest. Hmmm.... Once we tried them, it made sense. The ginger and lemon were used to disguise bad oysters with a terrible fishy aftertaste. The flatbread was soggy but flavorful. We added prosciutto, which was good choice. The phyllo/ beet mixture was very.....ok. The halibut would have been the best dish if it weren't smothered in an overpowering yet bland dried pepper aioli. If the Tapas were good, the price would be fair. Our waitress was friendly, but the busser/ hostess had the social skills of someone who should not be in the service industry. Super AWKWARD. I wasn't a huge fan of their beer selection. I tried their Italian Grape Ale..... don't make the same mistake. Ultimately, we paid our bill and went to our room. My poor wife had almost instant stomach cramps, and I was still hungry, considering the tapas mainly went uneaten. I ordered DoorDash immediately. Without question this is my favorite place in Humboldt County! Located in a lovely old hotel in Old Town Eureka, the decor is eclectic and quirky, but also elegant and reminiscent of times past (check out the penny floor in the bathroom). It's evident that they love cats which is always a bonus in my book. Really just a cool, relaxed vibe. Lots of fun cocktails to choose from - I've enjoyed several but the Cherry Poppins is out of this world! Staff is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the food. And oh the food..... Seriously some of the best meals of my life have been eaten here. Everything is fresh (and often local), thoughtfully put together and presented beautifully. Lots of small plate options if you just want snacks and drinks, or larger platters to share (try the board of the day or the mezze platter/ you won't regret it!). The entrees are incredible as well - I had a salmon special that was easily the best fish I've ever had. Not to be missed are there drunken truffled quail egg shooters. Tiny little quail eggs with a house made shoyu, and a sake shot on side. On our first visit the chef brought them out and said they are from the quail he raises at his home. Amazing! Desserts are decadent (crème brûlée of day has never disappointed.) I truly can't say enough about this place. It's where we take out of town guests (in fact we are going there tomorrow night!) and is always first choice for birthday and anniversary celebrations. Fantastic experience. Dined in the ballroom. The room itself already is one of the most beautiful rooms in Eureka I've seen. Comfortable velour couches. Nice stage that would be great for live music as well (none during our dinner though). All the cocktails we had were excellent (traditional cocktails with a creative twist). We dined here for dinner when visiting the Eureka area. The historic building made for a dramatic and outstanding atmosphere. The company I work for has hosted our Holiday parties here for the last 3 years. It is an absolutely stunning venue. Our staff old and new has appreciated the relaxing, yet eccentric atmosphere and amazing staff. Phatsy's was the first place I took my grandmother when she moved here from Arizona. She was awestruck by the gorgeous stained glass in the ballroom, the delicious food and "the best Bloody Mary she's ever had". I also took my boyfriend here for our 5 year anniversary. Called ahead to see if it was ok to have our dog on the patio and the woman on the phone said yes, so we made a reservation. When we arrived, the hostess (apparently) changed her mind and made us sit at a sidewalk table even though it was freezing outside. She said it gets too crazy on the patio when it's busy back there. Disappointed that I called ahead and they told me the wrong thing, but I figured Ok, fair enough, they don't want dogs inside. Then, as they were taking our order, a dog wanders out from the bar. They have a house dog! Ok so they allow dog, just not dogs. I went in to use the bathroom and peeked at the patio and there was one couple out there. Not too crazy from what I could see. The food was underwhelming too. Odd tastes put together and not a lot of great choices. Not sure my people love this place but my experience was subpar. read more

We were so happy to stumble upon this place on our recent trip to Eureka. This place has a unique artsy, sexy, funky vintage vibe that was so cool. Lots of eye candy in the form of all kinds of vintage objects and eclectic decor. Drinks are unique, finely crafted and delicious. Unfortunately we walked in late and the kitchen was already closed so we missed out on what looked like some amazing offerings on their menu. Booked reservations on Valentine's Day, was told that it would be a 20 minute wait after our reservation time, came back inside at that time and was then told our table was given to someone else and it would be another 20 minute wait. The hostess proceeded to try to argue with us about the reservation and then confirmed it and apologized..what a joke. We stayed at the inn at c and second for one night and happened to stop in this connected lounge the night we arrived. We had a great time here from start to finish! The atmosphere is quaint, spooky, unique, but also trendy. We enjoyed a drink on the house for staying at the inn and the bartender was more than willing to help us decide/taste among our choices. We also ordered a Mediterranean style small plate that had delicious grape leaves and hummus. Everything was perfect on our visit here. I don't see any reason for locals or visitors to miss an opportunity to check this place out. read more

This is my only negative review on yelp (out of 100+ reviews), and although the prospect of leaving a negative review initially made me feel sad, after writing this review and thinking more about it, I feel comfortable posting this review. Despite my personal negative experiences with Phatsy Kline, I likely would not have posted a review if it had not been brought to my attention that one or more of the owners of this business had apparently given this (their own) business five-star reviews on Yelp. I believe it should be pretty clear that giving five stars to one's own business on Yelp is at best morally and ethically questionable. It is also arguably equivalent to being dishonest and deceitful to potential customers before they have even walked in the door. I believe this behavior is also unfair to other local businesses that are earning their five star reviews the old-fashioned way (through hard work and exceptional customer service). There are so many awesome local businesses that we are so fortunate to have here in Humboldt County. Unfortunately my experiences with Phatsy Kline have been for the most part unpleasant and unprofessional. During my first visit to this establishment I found the bartender that evening, who I later learned was the business owner, to be somewhat unprofessional. Upon returning a second time with my friends, my friends and I were actually shocked at the unprofessionalism and unhelpful attitude we encountered from the owner. I believe very strongly in giving people (and businesses) the benefit of the doubt so initially shrugged these experiences off. But upon returning several weeks later with some colleagues, we found the owner to be unpleasant to deal with. We ultimately left and met up with some other colleagues at a nearby restaurant. During dinner the topic of Phatsy Kline came up and I was shocked to hear other anecdotes of difficult behavior by the management of Phatsy Kline. Still, despite all of the above, I would not have undertaken to leave a review had I not learned that the owner, or owners, were possibly giving five-star reviews to Phatsy Kline on their own account. In the end, I decided to give two stars to this review instead of one, partly because there was one young bartender (not an owner/manager) we dealt with there who was very polite and helpful, and partly in hopes that the ownership/management of Phatsy Kline will provide a professional and satisfactory response to this review and the issues I have written about. UPDATE: Because the owners of this establishment have not seen fit to remove their self reviews, I am changing this review from a two star to a one star. read more

We haven't gone out for Valentines dinner in years, but decided to try one more time because we love Phatsy's/Tavern for dinner. This dinner did not disappoint! Unlike most prix fixe dinners, the portions weren't child-sized and everything came out as if you had ordered a regular dinner - nothing tasted like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. Let me start by saying is that our bartender Jake was perhaps one of the most phenomenal bartenders we've ever had. His smile is infectious to say the least, and his cocktails.... better than that smile. We were immediately greeted by the warm and friendly Vibes of Sarah, at the front desk. As we made our way to the bar, the beautiful decor wooed us. Then we entered the gorgeous hotel lobby bar where we were greeted by Jake perhaps you nicest bartender in Humboldt County. We ran into jimmy, an off-duty employee whow showed us where we could sit and enjoy cocktails. When Jake greeted us, we've never felt like we've been more welcome anywhere. I discovered this place while walking down to the Edgewater where I was staying and found this amazing place, serving up eclectic small plates and delicious handcraft libations. I came to this place twice while my stay and Dan was the bartender. He was very professional, knowledgeable and a craft mixologist of his trade. I've never tried to return a cocktail before tonight. My cocktail was poorly made and I tried to ask the male bar tender to remake it and was flat out refused. The female serving staff was polite and attentive but the bartenders aggressive nature put a damper on the night. It was especially shocking considering we were literally the only customers in the bar at this time.
