First time trying Portuguese food! Never had Portuguese food before much less petiscos which is basically tapas. The food is very similar to Spanish tapas. The flavor profile is slightly different but I could barely notice since I'm not so familiar with the cuisine. Food: Lingicua- dope presentation. It arrives on fire to your table. Pretty cool and the taste is good but ultimately it's just a sausage. Class streamed in white wine/garlic- really tasty. I really enjoyed this dish. It has a very similar profile to other clam/mussels in white wine dishes so I dunno if you necessarily hafta try it here but it was good. Octopus- was also really good but I wouldn't say any better or worse at other places over had octopus Duck rice- this was just ok. Duck was a lil dry. At $45 I wouldn't recommend. The food didn't do it for me. And I wanted to like it. Ordered 4 items and they were all so-so. Here's the order in which they arrived. The octopus cold salad. Had a slightly mushy texture. Maybe I should have gotten the roasted octopus instead. Next up Filet Mignon. I can't recall where I used to get steak bites... but this place was way saltier and the filet smaller cut up pieces. (This was judged the best plate of the evening.) The clams were decent but o think the French make better seafood with wine shallots and tomatoes. Not sure what the Portuguese style was... but again taste was just average. The heaviest item was the Francesinha sandwich. Wish I looked up a picture. Two thick pieces of bread, with a piece or two of ham, and a strip of steak inside. Smothered with melted cheese and gravy. And an over fried egg on top. (Not runny.) Came with a side of fries. I've had Petisco's restaurant on my radar for a while and was excited to try it out. I've been to Adega which is their other restaurant and it was incredible. My friends and I ordered the shrimp appetizer, linguica sausage, fish of the day and the seafood rice. Let's just say that my party of three and I were still hungry after eating here. First off, the shrimp appetizer is ridiculously tiny. For $19, I thought the shrimp would be bigger but no, it was the tiniest shrimp I've ever seen. Even the shrimp at Boiling Crab is way much bigger. It might look big in pictures but the portion size and the actual shrimp is tiny tiny tiny. The sauce was good though. The linguica sausage was also $19 and there was nothing special about it. It tastes like the linguica sausage that you can get at Safeway. Both entrees were $49 and oh my god, ridiculously overpriced for what you get. The fish of the day was my favorite dish and the fish was cooked perfectly with a nice crispy outer layer and tender on the inside. The vegetables and the sauce were really good as well. The seafood rice, come on, for $49 I expected it to be loaded with seafood but there was probably only a thumbnail of lobster and maybe a few tiny scallops and the rest of the seafood was hardly there. I don't know if this was risotto or a porridge but it was fine. For a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, I expected much more but the service was just okay and the food was way overpriced. read more

After spending a week in Lisbon, we wanted more Portuguese cuisines and Petiscos delivered. We ordered the Iberico ham, cheese platter, beef tongue, octopus and duck rice. The ham was succulent and flavorful that combined well with the housemade bread. The tongue was cooked tender yet still had a great texture. The standout dish for the entree was the octopus. Served with side of potatoes and spinach, this dish delivered on flavor, execution and satisfaction. Tender enough to cut with a fork. We decided to try this spot on a busy Saturday night in San Jose and it didn't disappoint! We arrived half an hour early for our reservation and they were still able to seat us right away. We got the codfish cakes, croquettes, potato soup, cheese bread, and francesinha. The portions for the tapas were definitely small, but very flavorful. Our favorite was actually the cheese bread out of all the tapas. The sauce for the francesinha was also very plentiful and the steak in it really tender. I took my wife and kids to Petiscos to celebrate my wife's birthday. Honestly, I had previously visited Portugal but didn't care for the food all that much. But since my family had never eaten Portuguese cuisine before and Petiscos has a good reputation I thought it would make for an interesting date night. I was right. The food was great. Even my kids enjoyed it (ages 9 & 5). Of the mains, my favorite was the octopus. At most restaurants, octopus tends to be quite rubbery in texture but that was not the case here. In a blind taste test I would have assumed it was scallops. It was that tender. Of the starters, my favorite was the meat croquettes. They were accompanied by an aioli type of dip which I even used for vegetables. We ordered vegetables on the side and those were excellent as well. Cauliflower and green beans are two vegetables I normally refuse to eat but here, I couldn't get enough of it in addition to the other vegetables served. The service was excellent too. Between each course the staff would wipe the table clean and replace all of the plates and silverware. Overall one of the best meals I've had in awhile. read more

I think it's a Michelin star restaurant so maybe it's just me because it was ok but I wasn't overly impressed. The service was certainly stellar and the ambiance pleasing. Sort of Portuguese nouveau chic. The food wasn't the level I assumed it'd be. Here's what we had, perhaps you want to try the same or something different. Start with the Pão de Queijo. Delicious and puffy cheese bread. Based on the rest of the food, I had to eat a lot of these. The beef tongue in tomato sauce was the best dish IMO. Tender pieces of tongue in a tangy sauce. Nicky cooked to the right texture. Perhaps a little too lukewarm instead of hot. I can't find it in my menu picture for some reason but the next best dish I think was paella. With mussels and clams. Or maybe it was risotto. It was sort of watery, so maybe... We also had some kind of rice dish with a sausage and a pork belly on top. This one was pretty good. At least it fills you up. But it really needs more meat. Pata Negra fries with fried egg on top was another good one. Very tasty and surprisingly a little spicy. Quite pricey at $34 though. Octopus is always good and theirs was no exception. Cooked just right so good texture and not rubbery. We had the oven roasted version. They also have a cold version. Sautéed veggies were solid. Nothing explicit to describe. Grilled sardines were very bony and not really my thing. Especially what you get for $33. Pigs eat salad was the most, um, interesting. Taste was ok but the texture was odd. Basically cartilage. The last thing was some kind of fried cheese (I think) with an egg on top. I really don't have anything to say about that one. Overall, quite a price tag and overall not my thing. Most dishes are around $20 but climb to upper $30's. But you may love it! Delicious tapas that were all hits! We tried the duck rice (such great flavor and texture), the clams (perfect broth), shrimp and garlic (bright and not heavy handed on the garlic), and green beans tempura style (mmmmm). Recommend them all and wish we had room to try more. Petiscos is located in downtown San Jose. They serve a variety of Portuguese Tapas that are absolutely delicious. I ate at the restaurant with a colleague who is from Brazil and said that these were some of the most delicious tapas she's had in the US. She said that everything was down perfectly. We ordered a variety of bites including the cheese bread, fries, codfish cakes and green bean tempura. The standout was the codfish cakes. They were cooked to perfection- crisp on the inside, but soft and moist on the inside. My colleague loved them so much she almost wanted to order some to take back with us to San Diego! Although the service and ambiance was great here, I really did not enjoy the food at all. The three of us started with the cheese bread, but the center of it was a little cold, like it was refrigerated and then heated (but not all the way through). The flavor and texture of the outside were alright though. I ordered the lobster bisque and the waiter warned me that many people think it is very smoky, but I tried it anyway. The smokiness wasn't the issue for me though- it mainly just tasted of shrimp and wasn't creamy and rich like a bisque should be. The flavor wasn't lobster-y at all, and the only reason you'd know it had lobster in it was from the three rubbery pieces of lobster at the bottom of the bowl. Lastly, the steak sandwich. It came with fries which were actually very good. However, the sandwich was just a slab of steak on bread with I believe sliced garlic- the steak wasn't even sliced. Came in with positive expectations that this place will deliver food similar to Portugal. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience was so-so. We were seated quickly after entering since we had a reservation. On a Friday, on Valentine's Day, the dining if room was at 60% capacity when we were seated. It took a while before someone came to fill our waters and ask us if we had questions about our menu. When we finally ordered, the food was churned out very quickly... pretty much all at once with the exception of Bacalhau à Brás (which came out when the rest of our food was done). So pacing of the meal felt rushed. Food: in general, all the food came out room temperature. This tells me that the food was cooked and was sitting on the counter for a while before it was brought to the table. Not sure why because the restaurant wasn't at full capacity yet. Flavors of each item was good. Vegetables had a good char to them. Beef tongue was tender. Dislikes: The Chouriço was burnt. Since the sausage was already cooked, and the flame was for show, I was surprised to see that the ends of sausage end was blackened when it came out. The Bacalhau à Brás was way too salty. And it came out at the very end of the meal. The rest of our dishes had already cleared. The pastel de nata could be warmed up a touch. That would have made a huge difference. Service: not attentive. I felt like where we sat, it was difficult to get the attention of the server. We asked one server who took our order for dessert, for the check two times. Never brought us the check. Asked another server who cleared our dishes away...we also asked him several times for the check. Overall: a cute place for date night. It was difficult to flag down service to order more food. Multiple servers came by our table to ask the same things, so I think the restaurant needs to have a better system amongst staff. Loved the food! Had the mussels nicely tender garlicky and delicious. The blood sausage was so deliciously spiced and caramelized beautifully. The cured olives were wonderful. The mushroom rice was perfectly cooked. The mushrooms were very flavorful but needed to be caramelized as well as that sausage was. It was also under-seasoned and needed more wine in my opinion. My friends and I were hanging around nearby at another venue, but their kitchen was closed for the night. They did allow us to bring outside food, so we looked around and found this place nearby that was open. Ordering was simple from their website and pick up was easy as well. Codfish Cakes: My one friend and I split this between us and it was really delicious. The fish was flaky and the batter was fried perfectly for me. No sauce was needed to eat with this and I would get this again. Meat Croquettes: This was rather interesting for me. There was a fair amount of meat in the small croquette and the sauce did bring some tanginess to the starter. Yet, I couldn't quite put my finger on whether I truly like this or not. I came to Petisco's with my friend on Friday. We made a reservation for 5:45 PM and got there at 5:30 and they were able to seat us early! We ordered 3 pieces of pao de queijo (cheese bread) to split, along with the duck fried rice for me, grilled sardines for her, and 2 Portuguese egg tarts for the both of us. My biggest gripe here is the service, to be honest. There were many times where we tried to grab the waiters attention but were unable to. We had an appointment immediately after our dinner that we were late to, and we finished eating quite early on. Our table was basically empty. I understand that Friday dinners are very hectic, but the restaurant honestly didn't even start to fill up until very late into our meal. We tried to flag them down to refill our waters, to ask when the dessert would come out, and when to get the check. Each time took multiple tries. Pao de queijo: My friend is Portuguese and she informed me that they use Sao Jorge cheese in this, which is cheese from a specific island in the Azores with a very strong and tangy aftertaste. This was a lot denser than I thought it would be, but I've only had pao de queijo from Brazilian steakhouses. She agreed that this was a thicker bread bun than she was typically used to. Duck fried rice: Portion was perfect for me since I wasn't too hungry, they threw in a slice of sausage for me as well! This tasted really good fried with the duck lard. I'm a big fan. Portuguese egg tarts: My favorite part of the meal for sure. They come with sugar and cinnamon shakers to coat on the top of these. I've always wanted to learn how to make egg tarts at home by myself, but the crust is so difficult to get right! Petisco's does this incredibly well. The place looks great but that's about where it ends in terms of complements. It seems like they want to charge fancy restaurant prices and portions while giving you casual restaurant quality. The pork croquettes are fairly salty so you need to douse them in the sauce to abate it. This actually made them pretty good. The portion for the octopus was non-existent considering, at time of this review, they charged $45 for an octopus tail and 5 baby potatoes. Even without considering the price, it's just alright. The serving size of the Francesinha was good but it's honestly so one-note and reminiscent of malt that it became boring to eat. Additionally, the egg was fairly overcooked even though I cut it immediately. Also, it's so hard to cut it with the knife they gave to you. Wish it came pre-sliced. And for the service, boy that mess was rough. They tried but they were both understaffed and also incentivized. Instead of a server for your table, you kind of got three people just walking around and you have to constantly flagged people down to get service. That's fine for a place that's like $15 a dish. Been here twice recently. Scallops were soooo good the first time I came, that I had to come back but unfortunately, the second time, it seemed like the polenta had sat too long. TLDR: This place is decent and cute for a date night. It got my attention due to its association with now defunct Michelin starred Adega. I hope they consider reprinting their menu to include descriptions of what an item is vs relying on a waiter to remember to describe what entails or the customer to inquire. I participated in this year's annual Dine Downtown Restaurant Week and ordered from their menu which consisted of a 3 course meal for $45 which is a good value. I arrived at 7pm and found myself in a crowd of couples and small groups. There were no available seats at the table and I was lucky to snag a seat for 1 at the bar. Whew! With several options on the restaurant week prix fixe, I enjoyed their flamed chourico (appetizer), roasted octopus (main), and orange tart (dessert). I should have asked but I feel like it should've been indicated in the menu that bread was included as I ended up extra bread that I didn't need (albeit I ordered the cornbread/ bread combo). The bread (Portuguese wheat bread) and broa (Portuguese corn bread) that I unnecessarily ordered arrived with butter and olive oil. Both were thick and wheat-y if that's your thing. Personally, I'd skip this. Next the flamed chourico (chorizo like sausage) arrived and announced itself in literal flames. It was tasty and had a nice snap. Finally the roasted octopus arrived with potatoes. I was surprised to seee the potatoes on plate as nothing on the menu indicated it would be included. I welcomed this as I was actually looking to order some and would've also ended up ordering them as a side (it's not on the menu as a side) and find myself with a dilemma of over-ordering. Petiscos is a Michelin Bib restaurant in San Jose! If you're worried about downtown parking, you can park at the convention center parking and walk across the street to get to Petiscos. There is also an outdoor parking area lot across the street. The interior was so nice and the food was even better! We ordered cheese bread, meat pie, duck rice, asparagus rice, filet mignon, shrimp with garlic sauce, and flamed chouriço. There was 4 of us and the waiter suggested 2-3 plates per person. We ordered 7-8 and it was filling. Our personal favorites were the asparagus rice and filet mignon. This place was so cute and they even brought out a dessert for our friend's bday. Came around 2pm on a Monday and we pretty much have the place to ourselves. We sat ourselves down once waiter said ok to the table we chose. Parking: Street, paid. The decoration on the space is lovely and clean with plates on the wall, fish, and birds on wall and ceiling. Service was allrt. Now to the food! The codfish cakes tasted like crab but we all enjoyed it. Duck rice: which i liked but if you love duck like my mom does, it may not fully satisfied you depending on your pre-expectations. I enjoyed it but I don't know how fresh the meat was. Scallops curry crusted w/ Lentils was my favorite out of the 6 dishes we ordered. It was cooked just right and the curry wasn't overwhelming. Grilled Octupus: Soft, and the roasted potatoes and spinach combo was interesting. Fraccesinha: is HUGE! and comes with fries. It looked good in photos and I wanted to try since I haven't had it before. I would definitely skip this unless you know what you are getting yourself into and you like a saucy sandwich. It also came with ham, beef, sausage then ham again + eggs. It was too much meat for me in 1dish and definitely too salty. Beef tongue in tomato sauce: This was the last dish to arrive and I only had a bite of it and it was pretty underwhelming especially after eating having 1/4 of the salty francesinha. All the dishes are pretty small with the exception of francesinha. I would give the place 3.75/5 because I enjoyed 3dishes out of the + how much it cost ~175$. I love the high ceiling and modern European decor. Servers are attentive and food comes out relatively fast except for the seafood paella. Here's my quick breakdown: Highlights + Seafood paella - although you wait 20+ minutes, everything is delicious and we cleaned the pan. It's creamy and has a deep flavor with its chunks of seafood/mussels. I'm just disappointed in the heavy price tag of $39 and a rather smaller portion. (5/5) + Octopus oven roasted - tender tentacles are naturally flavorful with just the right amount of saltiness. (5/5) + Sautéed vegetables - has a hint of sweetness on what you'd expect as bitter (ie. brussel sprouts) with a little crunch in the kale and string beans. It's surprisingly good for just veggies. (5/5) + Duck rice - is good but not as great as I expected based on other reviews. I don't really taste much duck but the rice has a "Indo fried rice" flavor which I can certainly relate. (4/5) Could be better - Beef tongue - isn't as tender as I like and the tomato based sauce didn't mask the typical beefiness of tongue meat. I'm usually a tongue fan and portion is good but just didn't do it for me. (3/5) - Cream of mushroom soup - is fine but my wife says it's too creamy and not enough mushrooms. I like the taste and the bits of mushrooms are flavorful but just not enough of them. (3/5) - Tapas style but entree prices (2/5) All in all it's a good meal but just not enough of it. Our meal for 3 adults (no drinks) and 2 kids that eat like hummingbirds (just the rice and potatoes from the octopus dish) was $200 after tip, normal tax, and 5% living wage tax. This place is excellent. Cool vibe, great service, and amazing drinks. Tapas style food, so come with a few people and order different things. Our favorites were the rice and the octopus. Everything had good flavor and was perfectly prepared. read more
