The dishes felt creative and a little unexpected in a good way. A lot of the menu leaned seafood, which I loved. The squid tempura (literally hanging on a line!) was such a cute and memorable moment -- super crispy and paired with two sauces that made it even better. Also have to mention the strawberry sangria... sooo good. Light, refreshing, and actually tasted like real strawberries (not overly sweet or artificial). And the birthday cake sooo cute!! What an enjoyable experience with impeccable tastes, ambiance and service! I wasn't really sure what to expect driving up to this location as it's placement in the east side of San Jose was interesting. However after walking in we were transported into a more serene ambiance, with simple decor and a low volume. I should have snapped a photo of the menu because I do not remember anything we ate (and this was a couple weeks ago) but I can tell you it was all delicious! We did each start with a craft cocktail which was made non alcoholic at our request. I have been wanting to have a non alcoholic old fashioned since I stopped drinking three years ago and it was such an unexpected delight, even being topped with a thick slice of prosciutto. Our meal began with an array of amuse bouches, presented in such a cool display, I don't think any of them came on an actual plate. We went due to seeing recommendations for top restaurants in San Jose. Really disappointing. Food was meh at best. Went big and chose Reserve wine pairings and 7 course meal. Bill came to $900. Service and waitresses gave great descriptions but all courses were not flavorful and very small. Wagyu was not good and rabbit also was not good. More people should experienced this. I know at one point they had a Michelin star and then when they closed down that went away. I hope they get it back. It is definitely worthy. The neighborhood has a lot of character, but this restaurant is the Crown Jewel. Parking in the back of the restaurant was not difficult because we had an early reservation. Long overdue review. My husband took me to this restaurant in Dec 2024 to celebrate Christmas. It was one of the most memorable and amazing meals I've had last year. Do not hesitate if you are on the fence of deciding to dine at this spot. Parking: small lot in the back of the restaurant. Very limited spots so if you have one or the later reservations, look for street parking Ambiance: restaurant is filled with Portuguese features and decor. The blue tile walls, the 3D artwork. The space is open and airy and tables are spaced apart well. This is definitely an impress your date spot. Service: excellent. Wait staff was attentive and each course came out at evenly spaced intervals. There were explanations each time. After every course, the table was quickly cleared in preparation for the next one. It's Michelin star service but without the price tag. Food: 5/5 amazing delicious meal. Everyone got the prefixed menu and all the ingredients were fresh. They do change the menu seasonally I believe. We had the winter menu and every course was memorable. We had caviar, crab salad, pumpkin rice, swordfish, beef, pear sorbet and the coffee panna cotta with soy sauce ice cream. Complimentary bread was served with different types of cultured butter. We had multiple amuse bouche, a palate cleanser and multi-dessert stand, all complimentary from the chef. Every course was beautifully plated and portion size was just right. I left that night with an overstuffed stomach. Cost: $$$ very reasonable given the amount and quality of the food. 5% living wages mandate included in the bill. Wowza. What a meal and in San Jose no less. Had a birthday reservation for the fiancee. ADEGA is located right off 101. It can easily be missed, but they have their own parking lot right next the the restaurant down the small alley. Otherwise, there is plenty of street parking. The restaurant itself is a lot bigger than I expected. Decor reminds me of a fishery with lots of wine. They update their menu quarterly and use a ton of fresh ingredients. Their focus is mainly on seafood and as such, most of our tasting menu was primarily seafood. The entire meal was very well thought out. We really enjoyed the finger food starters as they were so fun. The pork was also a highlight as well! Overall, I can see why ADEGA deserves their Michelin star. What an experience! People say that the darker the restaurant gets, the fancier it gets. It's a tasting menu, so we didn't have to worry about ordering. I learned that Portuguese food is inspired by other cuisines. They even had chopsticks for some dishes. We definitely loved everything we ordered. People also came over to talk about the dishes. I love stories behind the food and design. The place is also elegant and spacious. Unlike the French restaurants, this place has more room between tables, which is important for conversations. Having been to their Portuguese bakery, I found out about Adega. I booked reservations to celebrate Valentine's Day early the weekend before. Great service from the moment we walked in, checking us in, taking our coats. We had the restaurant for about 45 mins by ourselves before people started showing up so we had a nice, intimate, quiet time. The set menu is 6 courses. My husband does not eat seafood and they were able to accommodate by offering vegetarian dishes. Some highlights were the pumpkin rice, crab salad and the steak. Was really excited to try this place with a friend. First off, this place is located on alum rock and is really inconspicuous & easy to miss. There is a tiny parking lot in a small alley behind the restaurant, but most likely, you will need to find street parking. Once you walk in, it's a very different story. Excellent service, beautiful decor, and just a really cool vibe inside. They have an extensive wine list and a great cocktail offering. The tasting menu was exceptional! Flavors, variety, and presentation were all unique. Our tasting menu had a good mix of seafood and meat - a little bit of something for everyone. Come here for a quaint fancy date! Dress code is not strict. People seem to come here dressed winter business casual like long coats, polos, skirts, etc. Ambiance is romantic, dark, intimate. Seems like we reserved a head of time because this place intentionally spreads out the parties for comfort ability as the restaurant is on the smaller end. I liked the set menu per person and the wine pairing options suggested for each dish. The set menu was essentially a 6 course meal but chef offered more commentaries for our party of five. Overall, this was a very filling meal, so hold back in all the complimentary bread. Specific foods: The tea and timer was a neat gimmick. Didn't hate it. Caviar for the side was a doom bc it was given at the beginning of the course on an ice cream cone looking thing. Very interesting. Dont recommend ordering this. I do recommend requesting half and half wagyu and carne/New York steak so you get both bites. Any sangria option is a good choice. Portuguese Michelin Baby! We disnt know what to expect coming here. And wow what a pleasant and happy surprise it was. We took our sister here for her first Michelin experience. And we all loved it. She totally loved it. The perfect amount of plates came out. We were very content and happy. Not stuffed but our bellies were perfect. On top of the fantastic food. We had the sangria sampler and although all was good. The red sangria was our favorite. We opted to upgrade to the caviar and A5 Wagyu here so that the sister can try top notch quality. An elevated taste of Portugal! I don't think I've been to a more accessible and approachable Michelin restaurant. This recent time, I ordered the fall tasting menu. The food and service are very nice (read: unpretentious; if you want to come as a party if one, call them and they can tell you more availabilities than the booking app shows) and since the last time I was here, the plating has become much more creative and honestly, adorable! I wish I had taken a picture of the opening amuse display but maybe that'll just be a nice surprise instead! I don't know what it is about Adega, but I always LOVE their bread and they serve it alongside butter from the Azores and Portuguese olive oil as well which is just divine. Their portions are generous and you won't leave still hungry-just very satisfied. For cocktail, I always like the Açoriana cocktail with its thin coconut sprinkled on the top to start and the little treat of passionfruit puree at the bottom to finish. Pro-tip: they have a parking lot in this little alley just beyond/behind the restaurant on the same block so turn in there to find a spot. The restaurant has a clean, sleek, modern decor with tribute to Portugal and the lovely coastline that surrounds it. This portion of the review is where my 2 stars go. Food (Fall 2025 tasting) - I was hesitant about posting this review only because after reading other reviews, I wondered if maybe it was just a "me" thing, but my boyfriend also agrees with this... Every single dish, except for the complimentary items in the beginning, were over salted. Our first dish was a prawn dish that was supposed to be "cooked" in a house-made dashi. The prawns were still raw after they poured the dashi over it, and the dashi was extremely salty. We each had one prawn and could not finish the rest. They were very accommodating and brought out another dish because they noticed my boyfriend and I didn't finish the prawns. What they brought out was almost the same but made with tofu and a mushroom dashi. I took a bite of the tofu and it was like a salt bomb exploded in my mouth. I did not finish that dish either. Every other dish after that continued to be hiding under a ridiculous amount of salt, which made it difficult for me to distinguish any other flavor profiles. The only dish that was not overly salty was the butternut squash pasta, which in my opinion could have been brightened up a bit with some fall citrus. The incorporation of other seasonal vegetables was lacking, there was not much "color" in the food. The desserts were creative - I liked the bread ice cream because it was different. The sourdough flavor really came out in it. The coffee crème brûlée was also good - not overly sweet and the perfect hint of coffee. The tower of sweets that accompanied our bill was presented nicely and they were quite simple. All in all, service and ambiance were great and it was an experience to be in a Michelin Star restaurant. We had a reservation and were than called later and told that their spring menu is $150/plate even for kids. I've been to Azores and Lisbon and NEVER seen such an outrageous price. Needless to say sadly we won't be attending for my mom's bday and have to make other plans. I understand it's a Michelin restaurant but $150 alone, especially for kids is outrageous. We booked during the last week of the spring tasting menu and truly enjoyed the 8-course lineup. At $150 per person, the food itself was creative, well-presented, and memorable. The problem? The upsells and pricing were absurd. We substituted Wagyu beef for pork and were hit with a $80 surcharge for a portion that did not justify the cost. We ordered a bottle of wine from their list, $150? for a bottle that retails for about $20 at TotalWine.com. That's a 650% markup, total rip off. You're better on taking your own vintage wines and paying the corkage fee. Add a corkage fee and tip, on top of everything else, and our bill for two was nearly $800. For a restaurant with Michelin credentials, I expect impeccable service, transparent pricing, and thoughtful hospitality not lukewarm water, surprise surcharges, and predatory markups. An experience to remember with memorable dishes Adega has been on our list for about two years. Wanted to visit before its close in December and made reservations for a birthday celebration. The interior is warmly lit and reminds me of a romantic restaurant in Porto. Wooden accents with the famous blue tile accents. Service staff was busy, but kind and attentive throughout. We had a 7-course Tasting Menu with Pata Negra Jamon and a Pasteis de Nata box of 6 egg tarts. Our reservation was at 5:30 PM, we were seated relatively quickly, and left just before 9 PM. It really is an experience that the host staff guides you through. We averaged $300 each and one of us had one glass of wine. As with most tasting menus I've had, there are things you find exquisite and others that don't land well. Different palates. For us, the soup, duck, fish tartar, and ovo hit the spots. The codfish cake, sea bass, and meat with smoked cream didn't match our tastes. All perfectly executed and beautifully plated-- worth tasting even when it's not your fave combination of flavors. The Portuguese breads are good and the egg tarts were as wonderful as we remember from fine restaurants in Portugal. Definitely worth a visit and the memories! Wow. Sure it's in a rough strip mall in a hmmm part of San Jose, but literally everything we tasted rivals the best of what SF has to offer. Service is a little shaky (lovely servers who are probably just less familiar with this level of dining), but each course was tremendous. We loved the dish ware, yummy wine pairing, starry eyed first course, completely stuffed by the end and had to take some of the dessert items home. Let's give it the last hooray. I decided to come here on my birthday after learning that this place will close in December. I took my sister and parents here, and was so grateful that they had us sitting near the bar because I didn't know how to reserve early enough. Thank you so much ADEGA!! By near the bar, it was actually a nice wooden bench table in the foyer/waiting area. Also, our hostess Michelle was able to speak Vietnamese. This was the +++ I didn't know I need because my parents only know Vietnamese. We got there around 630PM and didn't finish until after 9PM. So a 7 course meal was a lot, but I would like to thank the staff for their patience and love that they showed. The sitting area wasn't bad. There's still music in the background, lovely lighting that means you might need some flash on your camera, and there's a huge couch to relax if you need. My mother ended up relaxing on the couch as she was getting more tired. Called in to cancel but the lady we spoke to didn't do it in her end. So I was charged $100. Called and spoke to the owner and basically was told "to bad" but then she offered me $50 credit. How about the full credit since your people didn't cancel it like they were supposed to. I wasn't asking for money back- just a credit on our next visit. This is a nice, upscale restaurant. The wine and tasting menu were acceptable for a nice night out. Service was good, maybe a shade less refined than what you would expect from a fine dining experience. But the cost of this place is astronomical for what you get. We paid $630 after tip for the pre fixe menu (which is the only option). We did not get the drink pairings but instead got a bottle of wine for ~$95. We both left still hungry because the pre fixe menu is like 7 courses at 2-3 bites each. We pay less than half that price for a two-person dinner at Nobu, which is worth every penny. AFTER MICHELIN I heard the news in June that Adega would be closing after this year. At that time Adega lost its Michelin Star, but this restaurant was the first in San Jose to win a Michelin Star. I've never been to this restaurant. Also I never had Portuguese food. Since the owners of this restaurant also own Petiscos I wanted to eat over there first before I decide to come to eat at Adega. Since I thoroughly enjoyed my two weekend brunches at Pesticos I knew I had to come to Adega before it closes forever. When I made my reservation the two choices tasting menu were 5-course or 7-course. I decided the 7-course tasting menu. I'm glad I did because when I had dinner I overhead a server informing a customer who ordered the 5-course meal that she could only get one of the two items available for a certain dish. I came here two Thursday nights ago. Olives and bread were served as compliments to start the meal. I'm a sucker for bread, but not so much for olives as I find them to be too salty and tart. The olives at Adega were marinated in olive oil. I'm not sure if it's the olive oil, but the olives I ate at Adega weren't salty at all. I was so addicted to olives I kept on eating. Three types of bread were served. My favorite was the cheese bread with the soft, gooey texture inside. Before stating the tasting menu the first item was a compliment dish consisted of three types of sardines. The first paid item was polvo, which was roasted octopus served as a carpaccio. The octopus was delicate yet meaty in texture. The second item was lagosta. I've had bad experiences with lobster bisque with its dirty taste. The lobster bisque on the lagosta tasted clean. The texture was simlar to a pumpkin soup. The third dish was pombo, which was smoked squab. I liked the taste of this squab at Adega as it wasn't gamey but had a medium rare steak texture that melted like butter. The fourth dish was tomboril, which consisted of monkfish and monkfish liver. I've never ate monkfish liver before. I don't like liver because of the iron taste. The monkfish liver at Adega was creamy like foie gros. The fifth dish was cozido. This was for me the best dish of the night. The broth tasted like beef nilaga, which is a Filipino beef soup. With the mint wrapped around the beef terrine this dish had a refreshing taste. The heartiest dish of the night was the boi, which is oxtail with quail egg. As quail eggs are small a sign of a great chef is to not overcook them. With the quail egg served sunny side up you can see the talent of the chef. Eating the runny egg yolk with the oxtail made the dish enjoyable. There were two compliment dishes one of them was a pre-dessert that consisted of coconut rice with sorbet. The fried dough complimented well with the coconut rice. The last paid item was the dessert ovo. It was clever to have lemon mousse inside an egg structure. Prior to this dish I already had a filling meal, so it was nice to have a light dessert. Granted there were three compliment dishes for my dinner, but the seven paid dishes were filling and satisfying. I enjoyed my only dinner at Adega. Even though this restaurant will be closed forever I'm glad I dined here before the doors will close. read more

The service is friendly, attentive and non pretenious (sometimes the upscale restaurants can feel overly formal) We haven't had Portuguese food before so there were many new tastes and flavor combinations. Everything was enjoyable and delicious. It also seemed like we received a lot more than what the menu stated and as I did the wine pairing, they were extremely generous with the pours (at least I thought so) and I think I got 1-2 extras too (they gave some champagne for the dessert course, which the menu didn't state). The service was great and I loved the NYE decorations, plus the hats, headbands and noisemakers they provided the customers to celebrate the new year. Came here for a date night! I was sooo excited about this place--I love tasting menus, and the restaurant has a Michelin star! Sadly, the meal was underwhelming, and I left quite disappointed. Maybe I am just not a fan of Portuguese food? Firstly, the pacing of the meal was much slower than what I would expect/desire. For some reason it took soo long for each dish to come out, even though we were clearly done with the prior dish long before each new course came out. I thought that maybe they were busier than normal and that was why it was taking so long for each dish to come out, throwing off the pacing of our meal... but then realized that that doesn't really make sense. As a restaurant with such accolades, I'm sure they're fully booked often, so this must just be the timing always. My husband was getting soo antsy when two hours into our meal, we had only been served four courses. We arrived at 6:20 and didn't leave the restaurant until 9:30 (this is without ordering any drinks or post dessert coffee, etc.). Honestly, I didn't love any of the courses. I was really excited about lobster salad, the wagyu, the caramelized green apple--but everything fell below expectations. I really tried to like each dish, but it was difficult--some were okay, but nothing blew my mind. My favorites were the cauliflower soup and the oxtail stuffed morels, but even those weren't anything to write home about. I would usually say that maybe my expectations are too high, but here, a Michelin star restaurant with $199 tasting menu--I don't think my expectations were unreasonable. None of the dishes really seemed that finely created: usually with tasting menus at this price, I would anticipate each course being exquisitely prepared--both aesthetically pleasing and powerful and pleasurable in terms of taste. At this pricing, I would expect that each component of each course serves to elevate it. That to me is what would make the restaurant deserving of such high culinary distinction. However, at ADEGA, the flavors of the dishes just seemed...off, and I felt that some of the courses were a very strange mixture of flavors that didn't seem like they should go together. Birthday dinner at ADEGA was fantastic! Their 9 course menu was more like 12 with all the complimentary extra bites. The portions were also pretty generous, I started getting pretty full after the 5th course and ended up just having a bite or two from the rest and packing it to go. Service was superb, everyone was super attentive and friendly. Food was delicious, my favorite were the sardines 3 way, pork belly, lobster salad and wagyu, but honestly everything was great! The restaurant is in a really sketchy place with tinted windows, but once inside, the ambiance is pretty nice. read more
