Our evening began before I even arrived! I was driving in from Sacramento and, true to form, running a little behind schedule. I called the restaurant and had the pleasure of speaking with a lovely woman named Cathy. I explained that the reservation was under my name, but that if a handsome young man arrived looking around for me, she was welcome to seat him so he could enjoy a drink while waiting for his mother. Cathy was an absolute sweetheart! What struck me most wasn't simply her willingness to accommodate my request. It was the genuine kindness in her voice. You know when someone is being pleasant because it's their job, versus when someone is simply a kind human being? Cathy is the latter. And wouldn't you know it? When my son arrived, she recognized him! He arrived promptly at 4:00 p.m. I made my grand entrance at 4:22 p.m. For context, my sons firmly believe that *early is on time, and on time is late.* Imagine their lifelong struggle having a mother who believes in arriving fashionably late! But I digress. **Let's talk about the atmosphere!** The ambiance was absolutely lovely. Upscale, elegant, and sophisticated without being pretentious or intimidating. The noise level was consistently comfortable, allowing us to enjoy meaningful conversation without competing with the room. And here's something I particularly appreciated: Although Fleming's is unquestionably an upscale establishment, they don't make guests feel uncomfortable for dressing casually. You can dress beautifully for a special occasion or arrive comfortably dressed and still feel completely welcome. Think of what you'd wear to that *other* popular restaurant whose name happens to involve cheesecake. You'll be just fine! **Now, on to the food and drinks. OH. MY. GOODNESS!** My son started with a nonalcoholic cocktail called the Golden State of Mind, while I enjoyed a Smoked Manhattan. Now, I happen to prefer mine a little sweeter than most, so I affectionately call my version a Sweet Smoked Manhattan. Either way, you really can't go wrong! We began with calamari and oysters on the half shell. Both were AMAZING! For our entrées, we selected the Prime Petite Bone-In Ribeye and the Australian Carrara Wagyu Filet Mignon. The evening started with us being made to wait 15-20 minutes, despite there being multiple empty tables. We were then seated at what appeared to be the farthest and most isolated corner of the restaurant. I specifically asked the manager, Kevin, if we could be seated somewhere else. His response was that the other tables were reserved for "regulars." Apparently, being a paying customer on a birthday isn't quite enough to qualify for a decent table. What made it worse was that many of those tables appeared to remain empty throughout our visit. When we asked again, Kevin didn't even bother coming over to speak with us. He simply sent someone else. That was a great way to start a birthday dinner. Then there is the restaurant's claim that it has a "business formal" dress code. That was probably the funniest part of the evening. I watched a man walk in wearing torn jeans and a hoodie. I also saw another guest wearing a hoodie. So apparently "business formal" means whatever the restaurant decides it means when someone walks through the door. But the seating and dress code would have been easy to overlook if the food had been worth it. It wasn't. I have been fortunate enough to eat at some of the best Italian and French restaurants around the world. This was easily one of the most disappointing dining experiences I have had. The restaurant has all the appearance of a place that expects to be taken very seriously. Unfortunately, the food did absolutely nothing to justify it. We decided to skip the appetizers and order only entrées. Looking back, thank goodness we didn't order more. My wife's entrée was so excessively salty that it was practically inedible. We had to send it back. The restaurant then brought out complimentary arancini as an apology. I couldn't even get through the first bite. We were then given something else that appeared to be some kind of cornbread. At that point, the entire dinner had become almost absurd. A restaurant charging the kind of prices associated with an upscale dining experience should not be serving an entrée that is excessively salty and then following it up with terrible aranchini. For a place that seems to put so much importance on its image, the actual experience was remarkably far from what you would expect. If you want to spend your money waiting to be seated, being treated as though you're less important because you're not a "regular," sitting in the corner, watching the restaurant selectively enforce its own dress code, and sending back food because it is either excessively salty or undercooked, then by all means, come here. Otherwise, save your money and go somewhere that actually cares about the food and the people paying for it. We came here to celebrate my wife's birthday. Instead, we spent the evening wondering why we chose this restaurant in the first place. Never again.
