Birria

A longtime favorite in the Berryessa area, Los Garcias moved to this new (jinxed) location due to issues at their original location on Old Oakland Road. Well, the food continues to be some of the best Mexican food you'll find anywhere in the South Bay. My only issue here is value. Portions are rather small for a $25-30 per entree with rice and beans. The Birria and Pescado Al Mojo de Ajo were absolutely delicious -- flavorful, very tender, and cooked to perfection. The tortillas were served hot and fresh, too. Complimentary chips and three different types of salsa were a plus. Service was attentive, yet not too intrusive. They have several TVs showing various sporting events. (This location has had four or five different sports bars over the past 10 years. They all failed.) The vibe is nice, but still doesn't justify the price, but all in all, still doesn't justify the cost. Plenty of parking in this old business complex next to ECHO Church. I sincerely hope that Los Garcias finally breaks the jinx. If anyone can do it, Los Garcias will.

We drove by Los Garcias after service at Echo Church and figured we'd give it a shot. Heads up: it's tucked inside a commercial, office-park-style building, so it's easy to drive right past. There's plenty of parking outside, though I could see it getting tight on a big Sunday when the church has a good turnout. Walking in, it didn't feel very homey -- more like an office space dressed up with some Mexican decor, plus a stage where it looks like they host performances or shows. We weren't greeted right away and had to wait a bit to be seated, which set a slow tone from the start. For the food, we did our usual test: one carne taco and one al pastor. Those are the two we always order to gauge a Mexican spot, and the verdict here was just okay. The meat didn't seem well seasoned to me and came across a little dry. We also tried the chile verde -- the meat was nice and tender, but the green sauce fell flat and needed more flavor. The chips came with a couple of salsas, including a semi-green one I got excited about, hoping for a spicy cilantro situation. Instead it read as very mayo-heavy and tasted heavy overall -- not what I was hoping for. It wasn't a bad experience, but nothing gave me a reason to make the trip back, especially with so many strong Mexican options around. Maybe the shows are the real draw here more than the food.

IMHO Los Garcias has moved to a new location, which is much bigger and has much better parking. The vibe is the same, great food, friendly service, colorful decor, and happy customers. When we arrived around 5:30ish, the restaurant was packed, but we managed to get a table for four, close to the bar and in view of the many big screen TVs showing the current sport games. Drink orders were taken, a basket of yummy chips and 3 bowls of really HOT salsa brought to the table. The menfolk each ordered the Fajitas Mixta (shrimp, carne asada, and chicken), and we women ordered the 3-item combo plates served with rice & beans. I treated myself to Chile relleno, beef enchilada, and crunchy taco, $24.95. In the former location, when the plates arrived, you were warned not to touch the VERY HOT plates. This visit, my plate was just warm to the touch and the food was warm, not hot. Usually, I had to wait a few minutes before I could safely bite into my food. Service as always was genuine and friendly. You can tell, they are happy to see you and serve you. However, the service was a little slow due to the packed restaurant. It took us awhile to flag people down to bring us utensils, to-go boxes and our checks. I'm sure this will improve as they get used to larger crowds in their new environment. Overall, we will definitely come back!!! Their menu is huge and I need to try something new next time!

Update: Los Garcias Restaurant's new location! The Old Oakland location is closed. They still are in a soft opening phase. But the restaurant is open. The bar is nice with counter seating. Their agua fresca machine did not arrive yet, which is what I wanted to get. So, I ordered a regular taco with al pastor. But the kitchen forgot my order and the owner was nice enough to upgrade my order to a super taco: served with your choice of meat, whole beans, onions, cilantro, tomato, avocado, and cheese on a homemade corn/flour tortilla. I didn't see any avocado. Oh well, it was a upgrade from what I originally ordered, so I can't complain. Support your local business.

New Location!!!! What an upgrade on location, better parking and more space interior & exterior. Food: Nachos - carne asada which was loaded and chips are so fresh. Soft Taco - carne asada, fresh handmade tortilla, avocado was perfect, wish it had sour cream Enchilada plate - perfect good amount of carne asada Crispy chicken tacos - amazing Fish tacos - super fresh, great garlic flavor Drinks: Cadillac Margarita - amazing size and flavor, hands down the best bar tenders Pins Colada: perfect for a hot day Mexican Coke bottles Service: always great, they listen perfectly about our big order Because it was opening day for the new Location, they gave us cookies Hint: entrance can be deceiving, it looks like it's closed so just keep walking in main entrance off of parking. Not the patio entrance.

Carne asada wet burrito. Delish!!

It's been a while since I have had some delicious Mexican food in the bay area and this is a diamond in the rough. I didn't even know this place was here until I read about it in an article about them moving due to limited parking. This is the type of restaurant that I love to support. Just good ol home cookin!! I had the wet burrito con carne with a half red and half green sauce. Let me tell you, the carne asada was the best I ever had. It had that char flavor with amazing seasoning and it was juicy goodness. Everyone here is friendly and the service was great. I spoke about the new location that they will be moving to right next to California sourdough and the beautiful lady who rang me up was super excited about it. I am too because its closer to me now and I can eat there more often. They should be relocating in June!! Gastro Maestro Approoooooved!!!!!!!

Had an opportunity to enjoy Sunday lunch at new location food is good however disappointing for the lack of service it's still remains the same. We had to ask for refills asked for chips to enjoy with our food never made it to our table waited to ask about dessert no one came by. Not sure if they just don't want to hire someone to help with refills salsa chips drink checking on each table in a reasonable time frame. Was hoping to give an exceptional review.

Great Food! It's better than Taco Bell!

Fish Ceviche

I came here yesterday to check out their new location! I enjoyed the warm welcome when I entered the restaurant but its also a combination of a family friendly sports bar vibe. I ordered the fish Ceviche and the food was fresh and tasty. Chavelas are always on point!! They need some time to set up their new patio but i look forward to seeing how it turns out soon!

Garcias restaurant

Honestly I used to like the place. Don't get me wrong, i like this new place at Murphy ave. Great location. Unfortunately, my experience today 8/8 wasn't the best. Food took forever, soda tasted bad, my plate was missing what I asked for. And they didn't bother to say anything. Waitress made feel I wasn't supposed to be asking for anything. She had a bit of attitude. Not coming back.

Huevos nopales

Great food. They start you off with chips and three salsas. The breakfast platters are big and filling. Handmade tortillas. Lots of care and love. They moved from their original spot into this larger space. Nicely renovated, bright bar, and a stage. Would recommend for their food, big enough space for larger groups, also.

Customers BEWARE, there is a credit card surcharge of 3%. there is no option for 0$ tip visible, you have to click other and hit 0

First impressions: I walked into the restaurant it wasn't that busy and there was no one to greet me or take my order. I had to wait for a couple of minutes until someone came to take my order. Ordering my food: The lady (owner??) took my order and I ordered a carne asada burrito. She used a calculator and calculated my price manually and said the total came up to be $19.75. Huh interesting, on the menu it was $17.95 and I chalked it up to tax. As the total came up, I saw the tip options. I ordered takeout so normally I hit 0 tip but interestingly enough, there is no 0 option when you are first presented tipping options. I had to click Other and manually type in 0. When I did that, she gave me the stink eye and felt like I was being judged. I received my receipt and to my surprise the total cost came up to $20.34?? Excuse me? There was a credit card surcharge of 3% applied? I wasn't made aware of this surcharge when I ordered. Why are we expected to pay this cost? This should have been covered on the business side. If you are going to order from this place be sure to track the cost of what you are ordering. Waiting for my food: While I was waiting for my food, I looked around the restaurant. It seems to be some kind of sports bar restaurant. I waited almost 30 minutes for ONE burrito! I didn't feel welcome being there. Getting my food: In my head, I was thinking this better be one fine burrito... especially when this burrito costs over 20 bucks and overall time to get my food was 30-35 minutes. When I received my food, I looked at it and was extremely disappointed. What a sad burrito! It's so tiny! I could have walked into Chipotle across the street, ordered a burrito for half the cost, get skimped on that burrito, and still turn out to be a much bigger portion than this burrito. Food Review: I still gave them the benefit of the doubt, okay expensive burrito, tiny portions, but how does it taste? When I took my first bite, at this point I wasn't even surprised anymore. They put in the WRONG meat... This is definitely NOT carne asada. How hard is it to mess up one burrito order? Taste wise, it was an okay burrito. It has all of the ingredients of a burrito listed on their menu, but taste isn't that out of this world. You can get better service and food elsewhere. Overall: I'm normally supportive of locally owned restaurants, but this was just an awful experience. It was like they don't even want my business. I will not be coming back here again.

So good....makes you break out and dance to the jukebox.

Garcias has moved!! Better parking, same great food, great service served by the same great people!! Looking forward to the patio that's in process!! "Buena comida, buena vida!!"

Menu with new pricing, nearly a $20 burrito now yikes!

I have tried several items such as street tacos, quesabirria tacos, burritos, Barbacoa (soup) and menudo (soup). My favorites are the weekend red menudo which has no hominy, but wish it did and the burrito (in both sizes). Menudo is one of the best in the area (I shouldn't say that too loud, but it's true). It's not watered down like other restaurants, it's full bodied and meats (tripe and pata) are soft. I do wish we had an option of hominy that we can request. Burrito have been filling as I have tried several meats. It's heavy to the hand and filling to anyone's belly. Sometimes I enjoy for 2 mini meals in a day. Quesa birria tacos are the third favorite. Cheesy, crispy and greasy in the best way. Consume is flavorful too. The least favorites are the barbacoa (soup) as itwas mostly broth and minimal shreds of beef, if any. The tacos are enjoyed by family, but there is an abundance of a taste or flavor I don't prefer. I maybe wrong but I think it's oregano (but again not 100%). The third not so fav are the regular nachos with just cheese and jalepeno. Also, a negative is that 2 orders were missing items. So check your bags to make sure. So thats not a good feeling when that part of someone's order but recourse is to drive back or let third party know to get a few dollars off. We prefer to receive order and enjoy. Not to follow up with a drive back or a complaint of an item shortage to get refunded a few bucks. Otherwise the staff inside are very nice and understanding.
