Hipsters. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling hipsters. I guess it is to be expected in Williamsburg, though. So why did I, an aged non-hipster, go there one time, the end of last summer? Because one of my best friends got tickets to see Wilco at the McCarran pool (which was an awesome venue - I don't care much for Wilco, but the pool was neat, too bad no more concerts there; it too was hipster-infested, though) so Pete's was a close bar he knew of that was close to the pool. Since we're both coming in from a ways away, it was a convenient place to meet. I got there first so I checked out the place.
From the outside, it has a sign like those you'd see on bodega-type candy stores, which I'm guessing it once was, and the oh-so-hip owners probably decided to keep the name, because it's just oh-so-IRONIC!!! ha ha, a "candy store" that looks like a "candy store" from outside but you go in and it's a BAR!!! Wait till the transplant hipsters tell their friends back in Wisconsin and Missouri just how hip and cool and IRONIC this place is! Guffaw, chortle, snort!
The place itself is small but not tiny. The yard in back is very nice and relaxing but it's also very small so getting a seat is not easy, especially because hipsters use half the seats as ottomans and messenger bag holders. They will gladly remove their feet or bag from a seat for their friends or certain other hipsters. Inside the bar, the bar itself is somewhat roomy, but hipsters like to stand wherever they can best block people from going around them, so it feels smaller unless you park yourself in your own space. There is a narrow little corridor leading to the backyard which hipsters find to be a great place to congregate and set up camp, so it gets cramped there, too.
If you are not a hipster, and don't look like one or play one on TV, then you are invisible here. Bartenders and patrons ignore you equally. My experience at the bar was as follows...
First, when I walked in, at about a little before 5:00 PM, the bar was 3 or 4 deep with hipsters, so I went to just check out the somewhat smoky yard in back. The bar cleared up in about 10 minutes, so when I went back there were only a couple people waiting for drinks at the bar, but I had to push and shove through the crowd of hipsters to get to the bar. If you say "excuse me" the hipsters can't hear you since you're invisible AND inaudible to them. When you push through they look astounded, as though a ghostly force just brushed against them.
When I got to the bar, I waited patiently as the bartenders (3 of them) waited on the other 2 who were waiting. I stood there with money in hand, but when they served the other two, one bartender (the female) walked out, another one stood there looking bored and then started to move cases of beer bottle to the refrigerator behind the bar, and the other one started washing glasses. One of them made eye contact with me and then turned back to his busy work. Then someone walked up to the one bartender and got prompt service. After that, a gaggle of 5 hipster guys (who were previously blocking me from the bar) got an idea to "dude lets do shots...get Maker's...no, that's so 2005, get some Jack...no dude get some red devils that would be hiLARRRious!!" As they did this, the female bartender came back and walked up to me, and looked right through me and at the leader of the gaggle, and took their order for 5 shots of tequila (!!!) but at least THEN noticed me, because I said "excuse me" just before she took their order. She then got me two beers and even apologized for my having to wait.
Total wait time - 14 minutes! If you add the fighting through the crowd time it was another 3 minutes on top of that! At least I got to see a lot of bar glasses get washed, whoop-dee-doo.
I will not be returning here anytime soon, for sure.
So why 3 stars? Because the place itself is a less than one-star to me, due to the hipsters. However, the place on its own (ignoring all the hipster customers and workers) is average, about 3 stars; the bar itself, devoid of people, is A-OK. For hipsters this place is 4 or 5 stars, it is like a hive where worker bee hipsters constantly fly in and out, clustering like honey bees on a comb when they're inside the place. So I gave the most objective rating. If it were filled with normal people it would be a 3 star bar, maybe even 4 because of the courtyard in back.
So if you decide to go here, grow out that beard (but don't trim it!) throw on your skinniest jeans, your funkiest pink sneakers, your most ironic T-shirt covered with a plaid button down, your thickest Elvis Costello glasses, and your finest Fedora or porkpie hat, and you should have a great time! If you're a normal person, though, don't even bother going to Williamsburg, let alone Pete's; opt for someplace where those of your (our) ilk are welcome, e.g. everywhere else. read more
