Have heard many good things about this restaurant and finally got to try it! Most of their ingredients were local produce, so the flavors were richer. I have never had an artichoke appetizer like this before - the artichoke was lightly fried with chips, chimichurri sauce and buttermilk - the texture was meaty and the flavor was creamy with a refreshing kick. The cioppino was good too. Again, love the texture - even though it was a soup, the fried leek really added flavors and crunchiness to the dish. And the seafood was really fresh. We dined here as a party of four on a Sunday evening (the first guests seated at 5:00 p.m.). Given the glowing reviews, beautiful Instagram presence, and higher price point, we walked in with high expectations. Three of the four of us cook regularly and host dinners, so we all pay attention to food, service, and the overall dining experience--though we each have very different tastes. Interestingly, we all left with about the same impression. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The décor is warm, inviting, and immediately makes you feel like you're in for something special. Our server was attentive throughout the meal, although there were a few service hiccups that affected the experience. We started with cocktails. All of them were good, but each seemed just slightly out of balance. I ordered the OG Margarita on our server's recommendation, and while I'm admittedly picky about margaritas, this one was noticeably too sweet. The seasonal menu sounded exciting, especially since they emphasize using fresh, in-season ingredients. Our server insisted on us trying the Tomato Board. At $40, which was the most expensive appetizer on the menu, we expected something very memorable. It featured several varieties of tomatoes (including a surprisingly delicious pickled green tomato), a light and airy whipped mozzarella, and a single long piece of focaccia. Everything tasted fresh, and the whipped mozzarella was the standout--we'd never had anything quite like it. Unfortunately, with only one piece of bread, we had to order another just so everyone could enjoy it. Good? Absolutely. Worth $40? None of us thought so. We also ordered the escargot, which was delicious, though it's hard to describe five pieces as "family style." For our entrees, we ordered the burger, the sausage with potato latke, and what we thought was the lamb and mussels special. At first we were going to order the pork belly noodles instead of the sausage, but our server thought it would be too many noodle dishes, so we happily took his recommendation to get the sausage. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication, and the pork belly noodles were brought instead of the special we were most excited to try. When we pointed it out, he acknowledged the mistake but he wasn't quick to offer a resolution, which left us in an awkward spot where we just decided to keep it. Ironically, the pork belly noodles ended up being our least favorite dish. The pork belly was overly chewy and quite salty, while the noodles were bland and seemed just slightly undercooked. The fresh mint was a nice touch, but it wasn't enough to save the dish. The sausage with potato latke, yogurt sauce, and pickled red cabbage was surprisingly excellent. The flavors were balanced, the portion size was generous, and it ended up being one of our favorites. The true star of the evening, though, was the burger. We split it four ways, and every single one of us commented on how good it was. Perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, topped with melty Gorgonzola and a vanilla bean jam that married beautifully together. We used every last bite of the warm bun to soak up what was left. Overall, we'd give the food about a 7/10. Here's what took an otherwise 4/5 star experience down to a 3. The air conditioning wasn't working on a 115-degree day. But I'm not lowering my rating because mechanical issues happen. At first it wasn't noticeable because it was still cooler than outside, but as dinner went on we were all visibly uncomfortable, passing around my hand fan. Only then did our server mention that the A/C had been out. You come here for an experience and if you know upfront a patrons experience will be affected you are under obligation to tell them but no one mentioned it when we arrived or made any effort to acknowledge the inconvenience or tried to make up for our discomfort in any way. Persephen clearly has talent in the kitchen and a beautiful space, but when you position yourself as a premium dining experience, every detail matters. We enjoyed parts of the meal, especially the burger, but overall the experience didn't quite live up to the hype. For us, 3 out of 5 stars feels like a fair rating. read more

This is my new favorite restaurant. The food is AMAZING. They cultivate such a wide variety of flavors that all work wonderfully together. Their food is all organic, local, and sustainable and everything is house made. I got to sit at the bar and watch Chef Jason in action. The menu changes every week and features ingredients that change with the seasons. For drinks, we tried their NA house made old fashioned vanilla cola and the green fairy cocktail. I was absolutely blown away by the cola and had never tasted anything like it. The green fairy truly tasted like a garden. We ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and the salmon and firecracker chicken entrees. I was blown away by every single thing I tried. The most unique and flavorful dishes i've ever had. There aren't enough words to describe the array of flavors you'll experience at this place, you've got to try it for yourself. What an amazing place! My kind of restaurant. A real farm to table vibe. Everything is fresh and vibrant. Had a Spanish flare incorporated into some of their dishes. I ordered the melon salad to start. So colorful, variety of bursting flavors that compliment each other. For the mains: I got the cochinita Pibil and the Scallop Paella. WOW!! Again.. flavors and seasonings were amazing. So so delicious. The Paella was phenomenal and nailed it with their crispy rice that cooks at the bottom. In my culture we call it cucayo or cucayito and it was perfect. We also got the Peaches and Cream dessert. Heaven!!! As a person who eats out a LOT, I can tell you Persepshen is in a very rare air. The food is inventive way beyond good, it is freaking awesome. Take the Fried Zuchinni. Trust me, this is not some deep fried chain restaurant stuff, if is truly amazing. The beet salad was literally the best I ever ate, insane variety of beets, and orgasmic. The ossobucco over risotto, (and lots of other fine tuned amazing ingredients) is so good, I did not want to share. The seasonal tomotoe board was a sight for your eyes, Stunning. I've been here twice now and it is definitely one of my favorite if not my number one restaurant in the city. Which is saying something because there are a lot of amazing places here! Really love that everything is locally and organically sourced, that they butcher everything in house. And the menu changes every week based on what's the highest quality stuff they're able to get in that week. Not only that but it's unique flavor pairings and incredibly well executed I didn't get many photos the first time I went, but I ran a retreat nearby and wanted a curated health conscious meal for the final night. The owner graciously worked with my budget to create a menu just for us and literally everyone was raving about it. Just went again last night with my partner and it was again absolutely amazing. We each got a cocktail, which change I believe daily, that had really unique but delicious flavor pairing. Mine was reposado with grapefruit, tamarind, and chili powder. His was vodka with absinthe, Lemongrass, and cherry I believe or something like that but it was really good. I know the menu changes regularly so these won't necessarily be on when others go, but we got the escargot, the salad with chicken skin, the scallops were perfectly cooked and over a pork fat potato cake with sauerkraut, and the Conchinita Pibil. I don't even know if I have the words to describe how flavorful everything was! They also do a really great job of spacing out the food perfectly and bringing things in an order that makes sense. Like for example last night the waiter made sure to ask us if we were OK with the scallops coming out before the pork dish we ordered going late to heavy would be better pallet wise. The ambience in that space, both inside and on the patio, is also absolutely amazing. This is one of my happy places - you can just unwind here and enjoy delicious food and live music on Sunday evenings. It's beautifully decorated and they serve good food. I like their live music on Sunday nights. They have a Sunday dinner option where you can share a meal with someone for an affordable price ($25 each, $6 cocktails). It's a nice way to start the week. I get the impression that all are welcome here, whether you show up in a jeans and a tshirt or if you decide to dress up a bit more. All that matters is the food and that you're coming to have a good time. The second time we came by, it turns out one of our guests' dishes was very salty but she didn't tell us till after. We think it was a mistake because the other dishes were great. I think if we had mentioned it they would have fixed it. It did seem like it was over salted by accident since I ordered the identical dish and mine was way less salty. Their menu is seasonal so it changes frequently. If you're curious, I guess you can call day of to get their Sunday dinner menu, or just show up because you know it will be good. Their crispy fingerling potatoes are delicious and heavy. You'll probably end up taking some home with you. Their polenta fries are crispy and won some Phoenix award, if that matters to you. Also enjoyed the beet salad. If you appreciate local and organic quality ingredients I highly recommend you check out this chef/owner. We sat at the open concept bar and even noticed his large cutting board was AZ mesquite wood. Our server was incredibly attentive. We were there on Sunday and they had live music. For starters we shared the Sunchokes and loved that are prepared two ways (roasted and crispy chip like). There was a special Sunday menu with great prices on wines and cocktails ($7) and featured a Buffalo Shrimp Sandwich ($25). You could order a couple of different margarita's, gin and tonic and I had the Azul y Garanza Tempranillo (organic, nothing special, food friendly). I also ordered the Sunday special and the tempura shrimp paired perfectly with the fermented habanero buffalo sauce and was not spicy but all flavor (light and crispy). My partner ordered the Frenchie which was 90 day dry aged pasture raised beef and he commented the garlic au jus was full of flavor. Reservations were not needed at 5 PM but by 6:30, it was pretty full. We like to sit at the bar and I request that when I email for the reservation. It's rustic, but with an elevated menu. Visiting from out of town and came here for dinner based on my internet "research". Surprisingly not busy on Friday night. I had reservations but probably didn't need them. We got seated at the counter facing the open kitchen which was cool. It also meant we were served by the owner/chef himself. The food here is outstanding. I didn't know what to expect but I was really amazed at the quality of everything. We had a sunchoke dish that was unique to me but the flavor and texture was awesome. Mussels in green coconut curry broth - that broth is magical. So flavorful and satisfying. If there's any left over when you're done then there's something wrong with you. The burger is probably one of, if not the best, burgers I've ever had. Super unique with the strawberry jam, but it plays super well with the blue cheese (kinda like a charcuterie/cheese board). Finally, the Iberico pork chop...my god. The flavor on that thing...just as good if not better than any steak you've ever had. The fat is out of this world. Just super clean and flavorful, not at all gamey or too porky. The chef ages and butchers all of his own meat himself. In fact, when we ordered the pork, one of the servers said "can you hear that? that's the chef cutting your pork to order." Our group sat at the "big table" in the middle of the main dining room looking out of what is a very beautiful window, and the view is onto a large church across the street. There's a simple and understated decor going on. I love the natural features of the wood tables, benches, etc. The place itself is relatively small, or intimate, is a better word. With its tall ceiling and big picture window, it never felt "small" or cramped to me. There are 2 dining areas, 2 bar areas, and an outdoor patio. There was live music upon arrival. How lucky for us! Our group was 15 people and we had made reservations prior to coming. Chef Jason spoke to us about the kitchen's philosophy and how everything is made in house. He is currently working with over 20 different local, organic farms and meat producers to create phenomenal food. The menus rotate weekly to reflect the various cuts of meat and seasonal vegetables available. We were encouraged to order family style and share with the table. We all know one another fairly well so that worked for us. The meal was Chef's choice and so every course was a surprise. Such a fun way to have dinner. What a huge disappointment. Our son lives in midtown and we live in north Scottsdale. We always look forward to visiting him because of the amazing selection of restaurants in his area. We don't mind paying steep prices for good food and drinks. These prices were insane for what we were served. The wine pours were a joke. These were the smallest glasses and worst pours we've seen in a long time. We had the mushrooms ($22), peachy salad ($22) and the pork porterhouse ($68). My one tiny glass of Sauvignon Blanc was $14 and my husband had a very small glass of cab (not sure of the price) but we were laughing because the glass was tiny and it was only filled up a quarter of the way. Mushrooms (incredibly salty and flavorless). Peachy salad-no hint of peach (it was supposedly in the dressing). Just a bland bed of spinach with a sprinkle of cheese and a few radishes and pecans. Pork (mediocre). Bland and on the small side and way overpriced. The music was LOUD. We asked twice for it to be turned down. The servers were all in a rush to take our food and drinks away (We had to say no twice as I still had a very expensive sip of wine left and there was still food left on the platter that we were not done with). Shocked by the good reviews. We love farm to table restaurants and there was nothing special about this food. They use this as their excuse to price gouge you. We do not recommend. Made reservations for my loved one's 40th birthday -had been to Persepshen a few years ago and LOVED the details, the atmosphere and the food! I loved it then so much that I bought my siblings gift cards to try it out for Christmas. Couldn't wait to return! I'm not sure what has changed over the years, but the experience was so very poor this time in comparison. We arrived on time for our reservation and were told to wait 5-10 minutes "until the server was ready for us." This was unusual as there were 2 individuals expediting food (chatting at the bar while watching food be made) while a hostess seated and bussed. Surprised to learn that one of these expediters couldn't take our orders or assist? After 5-6 min., we requested to sit down versus standing at the door to wait. We were given waters and could spend time with the menu. We also noticed that the other staff (non-servers?) were interacting with tables more frequently to assist at this point. We ordered some starters, drinks and the food came fairly quickly. We loved the sunchokes and pickles -such a fun play on sour cream and onion flavors. We ordered the scallops and mussels for mains. Unfortunately, both were lacking in flavor - the focaccia was dense and had no seasoning (no herbs, sea salt) as well as overcooked (black top layer). The mussels were swimming in a broth (supposed to be green curry) and it was flavorless except the chili crisp (good addition!). No punch of curry or garlic -just warm mussel water. The Japanese pancake with the scallops mostly tasted like cooking oil. The scallops came with a delicious umami aioli which we loved and helped cut through some of the oily vegetable flavor. I was so bummed that this was our experience -so much different than my previous visit! For the cost of the dishes and the desire to deliver good food, this fell super short, especially on what was supposed to be a special night! Also to note: this restaurant requires you to email them to make a reservation which feels antiquated? Would recommend opening up the opportunity for an Open Table or Resy option to modernize the process. I did receive a quick email response, but would have been ideal to schedule on my own. read more

This intimate space is home to a knockout menu. Just across from Brophy I think the building used to be home to a tiki themed restaurant but is now a quiet restaurant that focuses on sustainability. All organic ingredients really shine on this menu that focuses on minimizing food waste and seasonality while packing a whole lot of flavor. We started off with drinks. This place makes their own sodas and has a delightful mix of unique cocktails and wines (you won't find coke or Pepsi products). We had the spinach chicken dip which was hot and creamy served with house made sesame lavash. The escargot were so soft and the right amount of chewy drenched in delicious garlicy butter. We were sopping up as much as we could with their bread. My moms scallops were perfectly cooked (and I mean perfect). I had spicy shrimp served on a fried "pancake" of noodles and veggies. Despite being a little difficult to eat (little tough to cut into the pancake) all the flavors were well balanced with a carefully chosen selection of herbs to complement the rich flavors of veggies. And the shrimp were perfectly cooked. This place really nails their proteins! Hubby had a massive ribeye with crisp roasted potatoes and charred onion and green beans. Dessert was a sundae. They make their own gelato and the salt for the peanuts was the perfect amount. The peach cobbler was to die for. Sweet syrupy with crunches of brown sugar crumble and soft sweet in season peaches from a local farm! The only disadvantage is the focus on seasonality means you may not get the same menu from one week to the next. Oh well guess I'll have to keep coming back. My only note is that they seem a little short staffed. The chef himself waited on us (maybe that's his preference it certainly felt special) but service wasn't really around until later in the evening and even then not very much. Located in an eccentric hexagonal building across from Brophy Prep is Persepshen. They have made it their own with additions and boast a great patio to enjoy with a group. This once housed Heap Big Beef in the 1960s and there is a piece of artwork that hangs near the restrooms done in a mid-century modern style that will give you an idea of the vibe. We made reservations on a Saturday night with friends and I recommend making reservations. We still had to wait about 15mins to be seated due to lack of staff. Although the restaurant is not huge, there are 3 people in the kitchen and 3 serving tables and making drinks. I believe the wait for our table had more to do with the kitchen keeping up with the tables already seated. We were in no rush so we didn't mind. It just felt awkward since the host really didn't give us an explanation. As we waited, we looked over the menu and figured out our plan of what to eat. Here's what we ordered: Roasted sunchokes Polenta street fries Shrimp fra diablo Korean BBQ chicken wings Wood grilled lamb chop Pan seared wild scallop paella Meyer lemon meringue We did everything family style and ate it as it came out of the kitchen. There were maybe 3 other tables. Quiet. Just how we prefer it. We came for my husband's birthday dinner. We have been trying to come her for a few years but with babies it's been hard. So we were so excited for this night and had been dreaming and reviewing the menu for almost a week. And when we go out to celebrate, we CELEBRATE. I hadn't been into this building since it was Hulas. The flow is exactly the same but i love the decor and the community table. We sat at the kitchen bar. I always love having a view into the kitchen so this was a perk for me. My husband is 6'6' and likes high tops so he isn't all crunched. The music was just at a perfect level where I could hear my husband talk, speak to the waiter and also hear the chef behind the kitchen. Order in which food came out and my opinion great timing. Escargot - amazing. I'll admit the sauce was out of this world. Sooo good with the bread. But IMO the bread + sauce + snail was not a good combo together. Each were great separately. Desert Donkey - light. Refreshing. Sparkly. Please get it. I could've had several more of these if O wasn't eating. Polenta street fries - the sauce was great but this was a very heavy dish. I would not get it again. It def wasn't bad and I'm glad i tried it. Just not my cup of tea. Charcuterie board - shockingly i was kind of disappointed in this for the price. However i do understand the time and effort it takes to cure your own meats etc. my favorite part was the duck terrine. Out of this world. And I'd get it again just for that. The paté was good. The cauliflower a so good.l but everything else was pretty standard. Mussels- first off the mussels were so good and fresh but the sauce was FIRE. ONG so good and the chef hit the nail on the head with the flavor. A must. Sirloin steak - I think this was our least favorite meal. The quality of the meat was just fine. But i didn't like the sauce. It was very bland. Scallop paella - the paella was secondary to me. I'm a sucker for scallops. These were so juicy and sweet. So good. My husband loved the paella. Olive loaf - I'll admit we had to be sold on this. It was their last slice. I was worried that meant it was on the older side. I don't even know if that was true becusse it was so damn good. When they recommend it go for it. Cast iron cookie - this was my husband's choice. I grew ip eating these at home and similar ones oreganos. So o wasn't to invested. But man o man. The buttery goodness is beyond drool worthy. Next time this is a single dessert option. No need for any other dessert. And for the record it far surpasses Oreganos. Chocolate cream pie - this so so freaking good. It was not uber sweet at all. So deep in chocolate flavor. I do wish there was more whipped cream on it as I'm a sucker for it. If you've read this far congrats. I know this was long. It's def worth a visit especially knowing it's organic and local and all that jazz. Some may argue the prices is too steep but we get what you pay for and I'd gladly pay for it again. read more

Came in for dinner with my wife. Made reservations in advance. They have very limited table seating (about 4 tables that seat parties up to four, and one large family-style table in the middle of the dining room). The rest of the indoor seating is barstool or kitchen side/bar seating. Instead of waiting for one of the tables to open up, we opted for the bar in front of the kitchen. We ordered a lot of food -- plate of pickles, tempura oyster mushrooms, roasted squash, Thai green curry mussels, and scallops. On the whole the food was excellent. My favorite were the mushrooms. There were many vegetarian options and the service was fairly prompt. It was fun to see the dishes being made and a lot of the food we didn't order also looked delicious. Overall, we had a good meal. The food was unique, and there was some thought that went into each dish concept. I'd have never thought to serve scallops on top of a Japanese style cabbage pancake with nori and preserved orange peel. But it worked! Our server was nice, as was the host upon arrival. I don't know if I'll come back, but I'm glad we tried it out! read more

YUM YUM YUM is all I have to say. From the vibe, to the service, to the incredible food. My partner and I had a great first experience. Highly recommend sitting at the counter so you can see the food being made. Everything we ate was *chef's kiss* If I had to give a warning it would be to fully embrace the cave like behavior when eating the Korean fried chicken. Such a fun spot! The service was beyond friendly. All of our interactions felt like we were being welcomed into someone's home. You can tell every single plate and drink is carefully crafted. What stands out most was the quality of the ingredients with the preparation taking everything to the next level. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the yakitori chicken was definitely the surprise of the evening. The meat was so tender having the right balance of sweet and savory paired with a refreshing bright salad. Even something as basic as the beer was carefully curated by the chef. Most of the menu was gluten free or able to be modified as such which was such a treat. Even though we tried most of the menu, we really can't wait to get back and try the rest! read more

Persepshen was an incredible experience from start to finish. I loved their focus on local, organic, and sustainable food. Sitting by the kitchen was a treat -- watching the chefs work was like dinner and a show. Chef Jason was kind and helpful, and the service was top-notch (they refilled water the second it hit halfway!). I also really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, kind laid back yet delicately chic yet resourceful. I had the O.G. Burger with strawberry vanilla bean jam -- super unique and delicious. Finished with the Peaches n' Cream dessert, which was anything but basic: brown sugar, walnuts, and brown sugar bourbon gelato. 100/10 -- I'll definitely be back. read more

Better late than never to post a review, especially for a well deserved restaurant such as this. I called Saturday January 6th, in the morning, fairly certain that I wasn't going to get last minute reservation for Sunday the 7th. I had the pleasure of speaking with Jason. I explained we'd be visiting, and headed to this restaurant after the Seahawks game, and was hopeful to be there by 7:00. He offered a time of 6:45, and when I said "ish" he accommodated and said "see you 6:45 ish". I knew then it was going to be a great time off the customer service alone. Jason happened to be our server... and probably he's the owner too, but was elusive on his response when I asked- keeping the mystery, which I loved. He sat down with us and talked about the food, the sustainability, the process... a menu that changes and that is composted after meals, drinks that were $6 (that would normally be $18 elsewhere), and several different selections of goodies that could be made gluten free. Hubs ordered the pork, mom ordered the scallops, and I ordered steak. And the squash. And pickled vegetables. And a hot fudge sundae. And a chocolate cake... okay, so you can see, if you've made it this far, there are plenty of options. And in all fairness, I can't precisely remember what each dish was called (who cares, it was delicious). I did ask if I could tell Jason what temperature I wanted my steak- and I was told told no- I trusted the process and I am glad that I did! We had our regular date night with another couple here this past weekend. Husband was very pleased with their take on vietnamese coffee and my Mexican Candy was fabulous. The heirloom tomato board was also fantastic - the grilled bruschetta was crazy good. I got the shrimp and curried pan fried noodles. Shrimp was good quality and well prepared. Noodles are house made (as is everything) and the preparation was creative if on the greasy side. My friend's sirloin was on the chewy side and my other friend was very pleased with her melon salad and fairytale eggplant. Two at my table got the peach cobbler and I got a chocolate chip cookie. The cobbler was great and the cookie was too although it's quite small (which I expected for $3 but not as small as it was). The restaurant was very warm inside. I was assured the AC was working and every now and again we felt a wave of somewhat cool air but it was overall quite hot. I struggled to enjoy my dinner because I was so hot. The price point seems rather out of touch. All if not most of the entrees are north of $30. My cocktail was $20 and while it was fantastic, it's hard to justify that. Our bill for four diners was about $350 which felt pretty steep to us and we are used to paying "the Scottsdale premium." It's definitely a quality meal but be prepared to lay down some cash. read more

Well.... Not even sure where to start.... Except shame on us for not coming in sooner. I made a reservation. Friday night. Showed up... my name wasn't on the list.... But was seated immediately. Didn't realize it's all "bar" seating if you are only 2 people. Honestly... didn't matter. The bar stools are extremely comfortable. Greeted by Jason ( Chef). Needed a cocktail to start. I got a simple vodka/soda. Husband got Green Fairy. A vodka based drink with absinthe and many more ingredients. Decided on the bao buns as our appetizer. Then we had the mussels with green curry sauce and the best bread ever!! Scallops with Polenta. Bottle of wine. Oh... and did I mention dessert? The Peaches with Bourbon and Ice cream. Honestly..... I have lived in AZ over 20 years . I've eaten at some on the best in the Valley I travel Internationally for a living. I can say... without a doubt.... This is one of the best restaurants. Every single thing on the menu is made in house. There aren't too many establishments like this and I can't wait to return. Thank you for one of the best dining experiences. read more
