    Karamiso
    Matt C.

We spent the day on Pearl Street and always love popping into Avanti. On a chilly winter day, a comforting bowl of ramen was what I needed to soothe the soul. After one visit, I'm recommending Peko Peko! This stall focuses on ramen, temaki, and donburi. Say less. Like I said, I was fixated on ramen and ramen only. My wife had temaki that she enjoyed. The broth varietals sounded interesting, but spicy miso was calling my name loud and clear. Karamiso (Spicy Miso) // chashu pork belly, seasonal vegetable, scallions, red pickled ginger, and sesame seeds. This was a 5-star bowl of ramen. The broth had depth and a slight warming heat. The noodles were cooked perfectly and had the texture I like in my ramen. But holy hell, the chashu pork belly was DYNAMITE. This was seriously one big bowl of deliciousness. Originally when I was writing this review I was planning to give 4 stars. But I'm upping it to 5 because I have no notes from my food. It was truly excellent. Check them out at Avanti next time you're in Boulder!

They were out of ramen, so I tried the braised chicken rice bowl. It was a lovely surprise that it was so good! It was plated wonderfully, had deep flavor, and I loved the egg on top. Some friends also enjoyed the braised pork rice bowl and thought it was great. Yum!

Having only tried one dish so far, I will say very good, but need more dishes to take to 5. But from the volume of ramen bowls going out to customers at a nearby table, and others in line for food to take out asI was doing, I suspect my next order will get us there. It is a new kitchen at Avanti, replacing one of the originals that had slowed down. Avanti has brought us so many good options and a few of the originals still going strong. Peko Peko has a nice short menu compared to some but seems like they are maximizing quality over too big a variety that often loses quality with these tiny kitchen spaces. Though there are 2 Italian based menus at Avanti, the one on the rooftop locations stresses pizza and the one next to Peko Peko does sandwiches, salads and plates. The sesame noodles were fresh, tasty and an ample portion. It was actually pretty with all the shredded veggies on top. The sauce very tasty and the sesame comes through. I happen to love sesame so it was a clear choice for me. Also, with no broth in this dish, carrying it home in my tote on the bus was easy. I ate it about an hour later and was still very fresh. I saw other items to try later with my husband and will have the time to eat in at that time.

Good food prepared fresh in a food court setting on Pearl Street Mall. Note that it's inside Avanti and there's no real sign outside. But that means you can order a variety of foods and drinks including a full bar. Lots of seating and friendly service too.

This restaurant is located in Avanti food court on Pearl Street. Craving Donburi and salmon, I decided to try this establishment. The salmon was fresh and had a good flavor. The Donburi sauce was extremely salty and took over any other flavor the dish had. Hopefully, someone mistakenly used salt instead of sugar for the sauce. If this is the case, I would definitely try it again.

Not pictured, we also ordered the duck soba noodles and the scallops. Everything tasted delicious. I do wish that I had saved some of the soba for when the hamachi came out but I did order those later. I would have preferred the hamachi to come with a bit of rice on the side but my boyfriend didn't mind the salad. It's a great date spot and if we were to sit inside there's options for Japanese style floor seating. When you go inside they ask you to take off your shoes and provide slippers for the restroom. It feels very relaxing and home-y.

Izakaya's are Japanese bars that have quick bites and snacks to choose from. I was excited to see we were heading in. Once arrived on Sunday night we were greeted and welcomed. Asked if we would like to take our shoes off and walk in as in Japanese culture this is very common. It really felt like I was in a Japanese izakaya in Japan We ordered - Tofu Steak - Baked Salmon w/ ikura & rice - Duck Skewers - Salmon Carpaccio Everything was delicious and cooked well. I could have ate 2 bowls of the salmon. Everything is nicely sized but a good size to not get too full to order more. This location is combined with another sushi restaurant and it's cool to see the sushi being made in front of you. Will be back!!

Their original kitchen, Zoe Ma Ma is now a half block further west on Pearl. They cover much in the way of Asian specialties for West Pearl. At Dragonfly, they make their own noodles and they are very good. I had some last night in my pho and am looking forward to getting the Yuki Udon next time. My husband wanted a selection of Bao so chose the roasted duck, the pork belly and the Dragonfly. He really liked them all. I love duck Bao so I had one too. Because it was chilly out I got the smoked brisket Pho too and had to bring some home since it was a lot to eat on top of the Bao. I lived the fresh basil leaves and the crunchy crisp bean sprouts. I opted out of the spicy peppers an onion as I find them harsh everywhere. I totally forgot to add a few other options as I live bok choy too. You can get a full menu of options online to order at your table by phone but we prefer and they offer a full sized menu at the counter. Note, that a nominal tip is included which is thoughtful and fair to customers and workers alike. They share duties but noted the owner who makes the noodles in the adjacent space was leaving as we were eating. You can see some of the equipment through the glass partition. They were out of oolong tea and I was hoping for some on a chilly day so I hope it is there next time as a long winter ahead of us. My husband had the iced Thai tea with his Bao. That tea is too sweet for me with condensed milk in it. We will definitely be back later. If I have pho again or my husband has it with rare steak as he plans , I hope the broth will be hotter to cook it some. If we could rate with half stars I'd go 4.5 though it was not quite perfect enough for a 5. But we will be back and pretty soon.

The miso soup was heavily watered down - needed either more dashi and / or miso paste to bring it to an acceptable level. I rarely have a good experience with ramen offerings at a sushi place and this was no exception. The "tonkotsu" ramen broth was anything but; it didn't taste anything remotely that would be considered tonkotsu and the noodles looked like it came out of some western version of packaged ramen noodles. The beef "teriyaki" lunch bento was awful. The "teriyaki" sauce tasted watered down and they would have been better off with the 99c bachan's teriyaki sauce from Costco because this sauce was the worst I've ever consumed. I was struggling to taste the components of teriyaki in it. It didn't even have the viscosity of teriyaki either and was this watery mess. The dipping sauce for the potstickers was also some strange spiced anomaly; the sauce that we all know and love isn't hard to make either - it's 1:1 soy sauce and vinegar, and they should have just went with that. The california roll included was ok. It's just overall I feel sad for the folks that live around here as this may be their only exposure to Japanese food and none of it represents anything that could be remotely considered decent. They need to remove the dim sum and ramen options and focus on what they are - a sushi joint.

As we started to eat our pork gyoza and Ebi shumai we saw a lit candle in some food being carried across the room. Having eaten here baby times over the year, we were surprised as we had never seen this here. The entire restaurant broke in singing happy birthday to someone too far for us to see. As a server was passing our table, I mentioned we were celebrating my husband's birthday too. He said meh!d let someone know. As we were waiting for our dessert later, the owner who we've met before , with one of the servers who was carrying an ice cream mochi with a flaming birthday candle arrived and placed it in front of my husband and all the patrons broke out in sing again! Who knew this was a tradition here? The owner, who is almost always on the floor had an instant camera and too a picture of our table with the candle celebration.
