You can gauge the overall quality of a Japanese restaurant based on its miso soup alone; miso soup is an extremely easy to make and high margin product for a restaurant that a low quality miso soup means that the restaurant most likely skimps on the quality of their other offerings. The miso soup was heavily watered down - needed either more dashi and / or miso paste to bring it to an acceptable level. I rarely have a good experience with ramen offerings at a sushi place and this was no exception. The "tonkotsu" ramen broth was anything but; it didn't taste anything remotely that would be considered tonkotsu and the noodles looked like it came out of some western version of packaged ramen noodles. The beef "teriyaki" lunch bento was awful. The "teriyaki" sauce tasted watered down and they would have been better off with the 99c bachan's teriyaki sauce from Costco because this sauce was the worst I've ever consumed. I was struggling to taste the components of teriyaki in it. It didn't even have the viscosity of teriyaki either and was this watery mess. The dipping sauce for the potstickers was also some strange spiced anomaly; the sauce that we all know and love isn't hard to make either - it's 1:1 soy sauce and vinegar, and they should have just went with that. The california roll included was ok. It's just overall I feel sad for the folks that live around here as this may be their only exposure to Japanese food and none of it represents anything that could be remotely considered decent. They need to remove the dim sum and ramen options and focus on what they are - a sushi joint. read more

I just recently graduated from CU and after my 4 years being here, I will miss sushi hana more then anything. I feel so lucky to have been able to live in walking distance of the restaurant. I am from the east coast so my standards for good food are extremely high, and sushi hana is one of the only restaurants in all of boulder to be able to reach that. Not only is their food up to east coast standards, but their service is too. Anytime I call in my order, I've never had to wait for more than 15 minutes for it to be ready, even on days when they're extremely busy. Additionally, going to school across the country is very tough as I am not able to see my family, but owners Ivy and Larry felt like my school parents always giving me constant love and support. The food here is spectacular, and the service is even better, I would recommend the Godzilla roll and the half shell oysters. The oysters have a garlicky sauce with lots of flavor and the Godzilla is an explosion with sweet and spicy. My first taste of Sushi in Boulder! The service is quick but that may have been because we were the only ones in at the time. They are speedy to bus dishes and they used a system of marking the menu sheet to order. Because of the sheet, the food come out together and on the same plate. Not a bad concept if you're comfortable sharing things with other people. The spicy is not much to write about. But the wasabi was so on point it gave the heat i needed. The hanarita cocktail is refreshing and has the right amount of lime to orange. I would come again because the people were kind and it has somewhat reasonable prices. The menu also features some very very good appetizers that I usually try not to fill up on. Hana is a great place for a quick bite to eat while you're on the hill. I highly recommend going during happy hour when rolls are 2 for 7 and appetizers are fairly cheap. I ordered sushi Hana through grubhub tonight because no other place was delivering to my neighborhood. This is easily the worst sushi I have ever had. The rice is stale, the tuna in the tuna roll looked discolored and didn't taste fresh at all. I ordered a tuna makki roll, two pieces of salmon, two pieces of tuna, and whatever the other pieces of fish were that were included with the entree. I've attached the picture of what was left of my meal when I threw it away. Miso soup was decent but for $26.00...I feel sad and hungry. read more

Do not go here. The food you can get at any other sushi restaurant. More importantly they have many safety hazards specifically the chairs. The bottoms are completely rusted. My sister moved back in the chair so we could leave the restaurant and the chair broke on her. Our table was loud yes but beyond that no roudiness much less any that would warrant a broken chair sliding backward. They blatantly ignored any safety concerns and gave us an ultimatum of $50 or the cops. The servers and hosts were very concerned and kind about it but not management. Management even admitted it was the chair and not her but still demanded $50. We offered many many times after it broke to pay $20 or $25. Eventually he offered for us to buy the "$70" chair and bring it back and he'd give us $50. So we'd be walking back with a $20 loss which would be the same as us paying $20. We always liked Sushi Hana and would pay the higher prices. However the last couple visits were horrible. Our most recent and last visit we waited an hour and 45 minutes. Firming that time our order was taken ) after about 20 minutes) , our order was confirmed, the wait staff spilled our wine on my husband ( and then we were charged for a new glass) , we and we got soup and salad ( we ordered 2 soup and 1 salad, and received 3 soup and 2 salad and were charged for the additional) and got our dumplings after asking again where they were. After an hour my husband got his meal. After another 30 minutes they asked us we wanted the check. We told them we had not received 2 meals. I ordered the soba tempura and then was given Raman my sins sushi order was never submitted. So, after 2 hours we had meals at different times, much of what was something we did not order or more than we ordered and were charged an extraordinary amount. Even with what we ordered I am not certain how it possible Came to the amount we paid. We paid because it seemed easier than trying to dispute. We will not be going back ever. read more

The hamachi was delicious but the pieces are on the smaller side and the rolls seem to be too. The Good: We went on a rainy Tuesday night and it was very quiet at Sushi Hana on the Hill (I bet it gets busy when the students are in town, and they made lots of sushi for take-out the whole time we were there). We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed an absolutely delicious meal of sake, sushi and sashimi. The sushi chef, Larry (don't be fooled by the name, he's Japanese!) was fantastic and has been practicing sushi for fifteen years! He plated our meal with attention and care -- we ordered a lot of food and while we were waiting he sent out the (gluten-free) cucumber roll, which was beautifully rolled, crispy, fresh and a perfect and thoughtful appetizer. Our sushi & sashimi arrived thoughtfully plated as well, perfectly arranged for us to share, and he even placed the heavier fish rolls on my boyfriend's end of the plate, and the lighter vegetarian rolls on my side. Everything was tightly, perfectly rolled, the fish was fresh, and I don't know why but their ginger is the best I've ever had, we ate all of it!!! I also loved watching the sushi sensei (I think the owner) watch the sushi chef with a hawkeye--he clearly cares and wants everything to be perfect, and it makes a difference! Also, I loved the music (classic, old-school, upbeat hip-hop). The Bad: Our server seemed inexperienced and was pretty awkward but it didn't detract from our experience too much since we sat at the sushi bar. He brought our bill the second we were finished eating but we still had half a bottle of sake and wanted to relax and watch the chef. The Food: The best meal I've ever had on the hill! I don't really care about that, I get that not all places have good sushi. but I was charged two separate prices, both of which were not the price on my receipt. the amount that I was charged was almost twice the amount I should have been charged. Additionally, I was charged for an extra item that we asked to have removed repeatedly and even went to the computer with the server to fix it and he seemed clueless.
