Even the traditionally affordable items (Ebi/Shrimp, Tamago/Egg) were $14 for two nigiri - and they weren't even good. I left still hungry, and feeling taken advantage of. Our waitress was nice, but seemed to be distracted: they missed an item, then brought the wrong item. The location and decor were nice, and the roll up door in front made for a nice indoor/outdoor experience. Overall: Terrible value, poor quality fish - next time I'd opt for grocery store sushi over this place. If you're looking for sushi in Boulder, stick to Japango or Sushi Zanmai. read more

This niche Japanese place has the feel of the real thing. Most good restaurants in Japan are small. Blofish carries that standard. There are indoor high tables and a diner-style outdoor seating area. this is a very expensive, subpar sushi experience in boulder. They have an omakase that is very aggressively priced at $135 or something of that nature, but that omakase will leave you very hungry. My dining companion and i spent $400 on a lunch for 2 that was just OK. Wow. I revisited Blofish to celebrate my partner's birthday, who lived in California for a while and is a huge fan of high-craft sushi. We love Boulder because of our hobbies way more than Cali, but were missing that level of sushi. We checked out Blofish a while ago, enjoyed it, but then COVID discouraged us from going out much. Well, happy to be reminded that it's is officially one of my favorite restaurants in town. Some folks might think they are too expensive, comparing them to other spots, and I thought this too initially, but it's a whole other league of sushi without being pretentious. They know what they are doing, are super knowledgeable about their suppliers, and as a designer, I really appreciated how casual yet elevated their brand and space is. They even serve tea in some really high-end Japanese porcelain from a brand called Hasami that designers like me really respect the craftsmanship of. I will say that loose leaf tea would be even better next time. Our waitress was super knowledgeable and also just gave us space to enjoy our special-occasion sushi, without ever feeling rushed. We ordered: Sashimi medium plate, Unagi freshwater, Eel-Japan, salmon skin roll, miso soup, rice. Sushi chef Craig who made our dinner was engaging and interesting. We strike up a conversation about how he became a sushi chef - through his interest in the Japanese culture and art. We enjoyed his sharing and the beautiful meal he made for us. I've given this restaurant two shots in a few years, and both times have been let down. The menu is enticing, having so many delicious types of fish. The takeout and presentation is gorgeous, but the food is subpar. The first time I ordered, I got stabbed in the mouth with a huge sharp bone, and picked around my order to find safe pieces to eat. The ones that didn't have giant sharp bones, were really chewy and lacking in flavor. A year later, I decided to give them another shot. New restaurants usually have to work out the kinks. This time I got 2 salmon rolls, thankfully there were no bones, but the fish was really chewy and a bit dry. It looked stunning, but was so disappointing. We had dinner there on Friday, and I have to say it was the best quality sushi we have had in Colorado (better than Sushi Den). My wife said the only better sashimi she has had is Mama's Fish House on Maui. Be aware, it is a very small location. I have never been to sushi in Tokyo (their comp), but from what I have seen on shows, it is similar. a bar at the window, a common table in the middle, and the sushi bar, with three (I think) two-tops along the other wall. If you have a reservation, talk with them. We got a text to say 'here' and they would let us know by text, but never got a text. I checked with them and they were able to seat us. We sat at the bar and the entire staff was so knowledgeable and friendly (as good as the fish). My wife is gluten-free due to celiac, and they were so good dealing with that. They gave her her own jar of tamari (GF soy sauce) and made sure everything was safe. If we lived in Boulder, this would be our go-to take-out sushi place. We will be back, many times. read more

I could eat sushi every day. It's my favorite food. And I live in LA where I have some of the best sushi at my fingertips. Whoa. It is my mission in life to get Blofish to LA!! But until then, if you're in the Boulder area, you MUST stop by and eat here. I had pretty much a little of everything cause I was curious and nothing wasn't amazing. If you go here, I HIGHLY recommend the Wagyu Negi with Tempura Aspargus Roll. (See pictured) Life changing. Truly. ALSO the Tempura Kabocha Roll. WOW!! It has Japanese pumpkin in it. Be prepared to spend $100+ per person which is obnoxious and unaffordable for what is not a great dining experience. No wonder the place was empty on a Sunday night. A5 wagyu roll - thin and minimal wagyu over the driest crab I've ever had. No seasoning on the rice, so the entire roll was just extremely salty tempura. I had been wanting to check out Blofish pretty much since it opened, and finally had the chance to do so this last weekend. Unfortunately, the experience was underwhelming. I'll start with the good - the sushi I ordered was very fresh and overall really tasty. The service, although limited (you order and pay online with your phone), was prompt and polite. However, digging into the details, this place just didn't do it for me. The construction of the rolls was erratic - one of my rolls was 70% rice, the other was 70% filling. I ordered nigiri that was overpowered by a bit too much wasabi holding it together. And the prices are definitely on the high side, especially when you consider this and the fact that the level of service is more like fast casual. I'm glad to have tried it, the food is definitely fresh and fairly good, but there are many better options for sushi available in the general area and even on Pearl Street. read more

Blofish blows. Any other sushi restaurant in the area will be better and more affordable. Got it delivered and for over $100 it wasn't enough food for two people. The rolls are literally half size and double price! Side of rice comes in a tiny little cup for $5. Salmon Nigiri which is usually my favorite had a weird chemical/petroleum smell and taste and didn't eat it. Bento-ria on campus is way better and a fraction of the price. Go to Zanmai if you want the experience. I felt cheated. They spent all the money on the adorable and tiny to-go packaging.
