I saw that Blowfish was a new sushi restaurant in Boulder so I had to try it! I ordered the spicy tuna roll and my boyfriend got the nigiri and hamachi. The togo ponzu sauce was not good. That goes on the hamachi. The fish tasted smoky or cured. It just wasn't what we really expected it to taste like. The tuna nigiri was really tasty. We loved that. The spicy tuna roll was very overpowered by the large chunks of cucumber. I could hardly taste the fish even when the cucumbers as taken out. They mention on the menu that it is marinated in spicy truff sauce, but even the truffle was hard to taste. There was a lot of rice and very little fish. I would say that the quality is decent but it would be much better if there was more bang (fish) for your buck. We will have to try it again to see if it is better, but I would try another place before coming back here for sure! read more

Certainly a contender for the best sushi in Boulder! We got a few different rolls, some simple, some more complex, and each one was delicious. John is a young sushi chef aspiring to be great! He's open minded to try new things with customers and gave us some excellent recommendations as well. This was the first time I've ever had barracuda and it was torched bringing out this slight smokiness that was so inviting. They had fresh ika, cuttlefish. I was in luck since they also had natto available. So John combined the two making me one of my all time favorites, ika natto with some sliced green onions negi on top. Coming from the Bay Area in California, it was such a pleasant surprise to find a killer sushi place in Boulder!! Then chef Curtis dropped in and made this amazing torched hokkai tako dish....so good. He then followed up with Seki Aji and blue fin toro and wild unmarinated saba. Boulder has a hot new sushi spot, and we lucked out and got to sit on the patio on a perfect Colorado evening. We tried various menu items, but the wagyu negi with tempura asparagus roll was an easy favorite. The wagyu had just arrived from Japan the day before, the tempura asparagus added the perfect crunch, and a pinch of sea salt on top really emphasized the flavors. The Tasmanian salmon nigiri and bluefin tuna sashimi were incredibly fresh, and the crab handroll was packed full of delicious flakey crab. Alcohol is coming soon, but in the meantime, they have kombucha on tap and a variety of Japanese beverages to choose from. To justify the prices, this place would need to be the best sushi joint in Boulder. Simply put, it isn't (nor is it second or third best). We decided to do the chef's choice of sushi. The menu said this was a mix of rolls and sashimi. 4 combinations of rolls AND sashimi. This option, we were told, was enough for 2 people to eat. The waitress brought out the dish. The dish was only 8 pieces of sashimi. Not even enough for one person. We were still excited because it was something new to try. While eating the sashimi I ALMOST CHOKED ON A BONE. I thought the point of sushi was so not have bones in it. The sharp fish bone scraped my throat. It hurt so bad.
