    Zanmai and Dragon roll

My bf and I stopped by for a quick bite and everything truly hit the spot. The sushi was fresh, flavorful and melt in your mouth delicious! We ordered the sushi combo 2, zanmai, dragon Z roll, and seared salmon belly with caviar. The seaweed salad and house salad were great apps to start. We also ordered the matcha crème brûlée for desert and it was really the cherry on top of a fantastic lunch. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Great sushi in Boulder and super authentic. They were running 1 sushi chef short so it took a while, but the food was amazing when it came. Definitely try the okonomiyaki - cooked pancake with corn, shrimp, scallops and a cool sauce (photo below).

Wow! Great sushi. The fish was very fresh. The service? Just amazing. We had a very sweet lady who always came to the table with a smile. We even met the manager and she was very nice. Definitely recommend.

No longer. Did back in the 90s. But they do have tempura items.

    Do they still have karaoke?

Not pictured, we also ordered the duck soba noodles and the scallops. Everything tasted delicious. I do wish that I had saved some of the soba for when the hamachi came out but I did order those later. I would have preferred the hamachi to come with a bit of rice on the side but my boyfriend didn't mind the salad. It's a great date spot and if we were to sit inside there's options for Japanese style floor seating. When you go inside they ask you to take off your shoes and provide slippers for the restroom. It feels very relaxing and home-y.

Izakaya's are Japanese bars that have quick bites and snacks to choose from. I was excited to see we were heading in. Once arrived on Sunday night we were greeted and welcomed. Asked if we would like to take our shoes off and walk in as in Japanese culture this is very common. It really felt like I was in a Japanese izakaya in Japan We ordered - Tofu Steak - Baked Salmon w/ ikura & rice - Duck Skewers - Salmon Carpaccio Everything was delicious and cooked well. I could have ate 2 bowls of the salmon. Everything is nicely sized but a good size to not get too full to order more. This location is combined with another sushi restaurant and it's cool to see the sushi being made in front of you. Will be back!!

You can gauge the overall quality of a Japanese restaurant based on its miso soup alone; miso soup…read moreis an extremely easy to make and high margin product for a restaurant that a low quality miso soup means that the restaurant most likely skimps on the quality of their other offerings. The miso soup was heavily watered down - needed either more dashi and / or miso paste to bring it to an acceptable level. I rarely have a good experience with ramen offerings at a sushi place and this was no exception. The "tonkotsu" ramen broth was anything but; it didn't taste anything remotely that would be considered tonkotsu and the noodles looked like it came out of some western version of packaged ramen noodles. The beef "teriyaki" lunch bento was awful. The "teriyaki" sauce tasted watered down and they would have been better off with the 99c bachan's teriyaki sauce from Costco because this sauce was the worst I've ever consumed. I was struggling to taste the components of teriyaki in it. It didn't even have the viscosity of teriyaki either and was this watery mess. The dipping sauce for the potstickers was also some strange spiced anomaly; the sauce that we all know and love isn't hard to make either - it's 1:1 soy sauce and vinegar, and they should have just went with that. The california roll included was ok. It's just overall I feel sad for the folks that live around here as this may be their only exposure to Japanese food and none of it represents anything that could be remotely considered decent. They need to remove the dim sum and ramen options and focus on what they are - a sushi joint.

Of course we always take the bonito flakes which arrive dancing on top of the food, to wave in the escaping heat of the fresh seafood omelet. They have a roasted barley tea I love that has no caffeine as made without a decaffeinating process and so different than herbals common in Boulder. It has real substance. As we started to eat our pork gyoza and Ebi shumai we saw a lit candle in some food being carried across the room. Having eaten here baby times over the year, we were surprised as we had never seen this here. The entire restaurant broke in singing happy birthday to someone too far for us to see. As a server was passing our table, I mentioned we were celebrating my husband's birthday too. He said meh!d let someone know. As we were waiting for our dessert later, the owner who we've met before , with one of the servers who was carrying an ice cream mochi with a flaming birthday candle arrived and placed it in front of my husband and all the patrons broke out in sing again! Who knew this was a tradition here? The owner, who is almost always on the floor had an instant camera and too a picture of our table with the candle celebration. He made a copy for us to take home and one for nh husband to sign which will go up on some wall I had never noticed. We'll be sure to check in the walk the next time we are in. It's such a fun place with really good food. Do make a reservation these days. It's always busy, the now are only open Wed- Sat for dinner. As we were leaving on a very cold night, there weee people packed into the little entry way waiting for seats. One woman was shivering as she had just flown in from FL she said, unprepared for the recent shift back to winter today. Shocked me this morning too.

Their…read moreokonomiyaki, ramen, and sushi selections go head-to-head with some of my favorite Japanese places in the mid-Atlantic. I regularly order the Chirashi and Ramen, as well as their negitoro handroll which is genuinely as good as any I've been handed at $200/person omakase experiences. Their ramen broth is super rich, flavorful, and some of the best around, I've tried Uncle, Odd Rabbit, and most of the other spots people recommend and I still find Osaka's to be the best. The price is also relatively reasonable for what you get in Boulder and adding some extra noodles to an order really gives a large satisfying portion. The service is streamlined and efficient with the "call waiter" buttons on the table making for one of the most straightforward dining experiences in Boulder. My only critique is that the timing of sushi bar items and kitchen items can be unharmonious when the sushi bar gets inundated with orders, so just be aware of that when ordering. The desserts and drink options are solid and also make for a very well-rounded dining experience. I love the mont blanc and a draft sapporo. All in all, I recommend Osaka's as the best value Japanese spot in Boulder!
